2019 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Coupe Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

Keshav Katyal's image

Keshav Katyal Content Writer Updated on: October 31, 2019

With over 65 years in existence, the Corvette has always been a customer favorite since its inception. With performance in its DNA, Chevy introduced the Z06 version of the Corvette in the C2. Over the years, Americans have loved the Vette for its well-balanced ride and practicality. Be it a weekend drive or just a daily driver, the Vette has always been an iconic American sports car.

It has improved drastically both on the lines of performance and overall aesthetics and has emerged as a desirable peoples’ sports car. With the latest iteration of this iconic American sports car, Chevy brings some subtle changes but retains the fundamental ideas on which this car was made. American cars have always been thought to be boxy-looking heavyweights with a thunder-sounding engine. Chevrolet made a distinct mark by introducing the Corvette to the American masses, which challenged the stereotype, was fun to drive, and had a powerful V8 engine under the hood to make it move.

Chevy offers a very narrow choice of variants with many interior and exterior customizations available with the top trim. We recommend the 3LZ variant as spending an extra $9000 offers the best performance, with many personalization options to choose from.

2019 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Coupe Engine and Performance

9.2/10

"Sold as either a sporty coupe or showy convertible, the most important feature is its supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 that makes 650 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque and blasts an earth-shattering exhaust note." –Car and Driver

Engine and Transmission

Under the hood of this outrageous car, Chevy is offering a powerful 6.2L motor produces 650 hp, which is an insane amount of raw power given into the hands of a rider. Also, it produces 650 lb-ft of torque, which is the highest among its rivals.

The burbling V8 motor is full of bass and sounds sonorous & rich. While revving the engine, the motor creates a great burbling sound that feels like honey to one's ears. The raw, brutal engine of the Z06 performs amazingly well on tracks and while in the city, it makes the car a crowd magnet.

When compared to its competitors, the Z06 occupies the pole position in terms of power output. You would have to struggle quite a bit to find a car as powerful as the Vette in this price range. The power remains unmatched even past its highest price tag. The GT-R comes the closest with its twin-turbo V6, followed by the Jaguar F-Type. The Vette's transmission is also a work of art, second only to the Porsche's outstanding PDK variant.

Acceleration

The hidden beast gets unleashed as soon as the pedal is pressed against the floor. Those 650 horses give the car an amazing amount of thrust. A well-tuned gas pedal is very responsive and even with a little push, it unleashes the true force of the massive motor under the hood.

When compared to its competitors, the car gets a tough completion from the Godzilla as it leaves the Vette behind by just 0.4 seconds in the 0-60 mph test. However, it is the Porsche that comes dangerously close to the Corvette Z06. It makes up for its lack of power with a lightweight chassis and an improved power delivery system.

Braking

The brake pedal on the new Vette feels natural and easy to use. All thanks to the big Brembo brakes, the car takes just 99.6 ft. to come to a complete standstill from 60 mph. The brakes are strong and their performance is quite impressive, both in a straight line and around corners. Still, the Corvette is not as quick to stop as the Porsche 911 Carrera S or the Nissan GT-R, both of whom benefit from bigger brakes and more traction.

Ride and Handling

Climbing behind the wheel of this car, the car feels well balanced and powerful. The ride quality of the new Z06 is impressive. The car provides the rider 4 modes of driving giving a unique driving experience in each mode. The car comes equipped with some advanced features to make the ride comfortable yet thrilling.

The steering wheel feels a little heavy, but still, the control is appreciable. The steering wheel is precise and the car follows where the rider wants it to go. While on a rough surface, the ride feels harsh though on the tarmac, it feels smooth. This car performs really well on tracks and changes the opinion for a ‘fast car’.

While on corners, the car feels capable and corners quite smoothly due to its width and has minimum body roll. The acceleration of this car is brutal and sends shivers down the spine. The car is well balanced and the driver feels confident behind the wheel.

2019 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Coupe Fuel Economy

6.2/10

The powerful engine gets thirsty, but still returns a decent fuel economy that puts it well ahead of most sports cars. Even so, it loses to the small-engined Porsche 911, a car which makes the most out of its 3.0L flat-six. With a stalwart 15.4 gallons of premium fuel, you may not show up at your local gas station very often. A highway cruising range of over 400 miles make the Corvette Z06 a perfect pick for a weekend excursion.

2019 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Coupe Interior

6.8/10

Despite its intimidating sheetmetal and track-ready tuning, the Vette has a passenger-friendly interior and contemporary infotainment system.” – Car and Driver

Seating and Comfort

Despite being a two-seater, the Z06 is surprisingly spacious with an ample amount of room to stretch. Though this car is not for relaxing, yet the roominess inside the cabin makes a person feel at home.

The car has well-bolstered seats that are comfortable and feel sturdy. Because of the adjustable steering wheel and seats, the driving position feels flexible and many drivers will find an ideal driving position. The interior looks great for the price and Chevy has improved the quality of the cabin materials from the previous generation.

While getting in, the door handles lie in a little cubby space in which the rider has to put the hand to open the door. Like most sports cars out there, the Z06 is low so the driver has to get low to get inside, though the big dashboard and steep windshield make getting in and out a little difficult.

The control panel is driver-centric and is slightly tilted towards the driver for easy access. The upper variants also offer a great array of personalization options to give the interior and exterior a unique appearance and feel. When compared to its rivals, the Vette can accommodate only 2 persons whereas its competitors can accommodate 4 people, making them quite ideal for a family of speed junkies.

Infotainment

The aggressive-looking dashboard of this new Vette has an 8” color touchscreen which looks big and vibrant. The graphics on it look quite crisp. There is also a hidden compartment behind the infotainment which can be used to store little things.

The car comes equipped with all the latest features to keep you entertained and make your ride more fun. The car has Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, 9-speaker Bose premium sound system or 10-speaker Bose premium sound system with 2LZ and 3LZ variants. There is also a small display in the gauge cluster which gives a better view of the stats of the car along with selecting different driving modes.

There is also a transparent HUD which shows the rider car speed and time and helps the rider to maintain the focus on the road. It is standard for all trim levels of the Corvette Z06.

Cargo space

It’s a common notion that coupes don’t have enough cargo space but the Z06 breaks this notion and surprisingly offers a great cargo space which is also the highest cargo space offered among its rivals. The trunk doesn't do much drama as well. So, you can load in much of cargo without any hassle. Even the small-item storage upfront is surprisingly generous. For a car that looks like a fighter jet from the inside, there are a lot of smart compartments and a usable glove box to cater to all your repertory needs.

The Vette offers the maximum cargo space of 15 cu.ft. and takes the crown for it, followed narrowly by Jag(14.4 cu.ft). Both the Nissan and Porsche are too much into the performance coupe aspect to offer any practicality. Thus, they make do with just enough for a couple of backpacks.

It has a real scoop addiction. At the same time, hallmark details like round taillights have been axed. It's an attention-getting machine, and it's drawn that way.” – The Car connection

Dimension and Weight

The engineers at Chevrolet did a great job by making the Vette faster and lighter. The Godzilla is the heaviest car but has an impressive acceleration time which helps it to give tough competition to the Vette. The Porsche 911 comes the smallest and lightest in this segment, which enables it to possess fantastic handling capabilities and getting the best of its tiny 3-liter engine.

2019 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Coupe Safety

7.0/10

The 2019 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 coupe has not been crash-tested by the NHTSA or the IIHS. Nevertheless, the aluminum frame is quite capable of absorbing most of the energy from an impact. You may not find a lot of advanced driver aids onboard, but Chevrolet offers the car with enough safety features to make it easier to careen the car out of danger. Even for amateur drivers, the car's handling doesn't exceed the point where you lose control of the car.

Safety Features

  • Active handling stability control and traction control
  • Performance traction management
  • OnStar and Chevrolet Connected Emergency SOS
  • Rear vision camera
  • Front and Side Dual-Stage Airbags
  • Curb view camera

2019 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Coupe Competition

8.5/10

Chevrolet Corvette Z06 v/s Jaguar F-Type

In this battle between two V8s belonging to the opposite sides of the pond, the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 is undoubtedly the more powerful. It packs in more power and offers a better thrill while driving. The F-Type exceeds in a more plush and comfortable interior, making it more fit for a relaxing cruise than an adrenaline-fuelled track day. The same attitude goes for the transmissions of both cars. While the Corvette has sharper shifts, the 8-speed ZF automatic offers more compliance and convenience. If you want more bang for your buck, the Vette is the one that features more for less.

Chevrolet Corvette Z06 v/s Nissan GT-R

American sports car v/s the Japanese Godzilla, the Vette gets tough competition from the iconic GT-R in many segments, from performance to the seating capacity, cargo, and even fuel economy. Despite being the heaviest, the GT-R has the fastest 0-60 time and leaves the Vette biting the dust, thanks to its robust AWD system. Both cars are iconic and have their own charm. The GT-R is for those who are into Japanese cars and have a bigger pocket. The Corvette, on the other hand, is a budget-friendly sports car that is a great performer with a pinch of practicality.

Chevrolet Corvette Z06 v/s Porsche 911 Carrera S

When comparing the Corvette Z06 with the Porsche 911 Carrera S, it becomes the story of David and Goliath. One relies on brute force and sheer power, while the other on finesse and subtlety. The German offers you much more premium interiors and an increased range for the same amount of fuel. Not to mention it can seat two more people even if those two were not larger in dimensions than Peter Dinklage. Yet, you have to wonder if that extra bit of space is worth an extra $20,000 for a slower and smaller car.

2019 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Coupe Final Verdict

8.0/10

Termed as the blue devil in its previous generation, the new Corvette Z06 is no joke when it comes to performance. With its powerful V8 motor under the hood and aggressive exterior looks, the car creates its own identity among many cars out there. With the new Z06, Chevy has entered into the supercar territory and puts the Z06 above the legendary Ferrari F-50 in-terms of performance. Though still this car can’t be treated as a daily driver because of its fuel economy, it is enough to make you forget this fact once you put the pedal to the metal.

2019 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Coupe Frequently Asked Questions(FAQs)

How fast is the Chevrolet Corvette Z06?

Packing in 650 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque, the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 can attain 60 mph from a standstill in 3.3 seconds and a quarter-mile run in 10.9 seconds. On a long enough straight, it can achieve a top speed of 195 mph.

What does 'Z06' mean on a Corvette?

In the early 1960s, the C2 Corvettes were prohibited from getting race-spec parts as standard. Zora Arkus-Duntov, chief engineer of GM at the time, slyly figured out a way to offer such performance with six upgrades as part of the Basic Factory Pack with C3 Corvettes. All such Corvettes were henceforth designated as Z06, with the Z from Duntov's first name and the number of upgrades being the rest of the designation.

Does the Corvette Z06 come with an automatic transmission?

Yes. There is an option for an 8-speed automatic transmission for the Z06 Corvette. Although, most performance enthusiasts go for the 7-speed manual with active rev-matching to get the most out of the behemoth V8 engine.

Is the Z06 Corvette expensive to maintain?

The average cost of maintenance of a Z06 Corvette, including repairs, comes out to be $674, which is nearly 40% less than the average of all the cars that offer similar performance. To put that in perspective, a 2018 Audi R8 has an annual maintenance cost of at least $2,400. For a Jaguar F-Type, that annual average comes out to be $1,441.
