Detailed Review

It has been 50 years since its debut and the ZR1 has come a long way in terms of both performance and style. An iconic car which made its mark in the American motor industry as a pocket-friendly sports car, the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 makes a grand entry.

During its debut year, the ZR1 connected to the masses in such a way that many speed junkies, who were looking to feed their hunger for power got this car. Thought to be driven on a track, Chevy made it so that even daily drivers can enjoy the thrilling ride without getting a ticket.

A car which has treaded too far into the supercar territory and leaving some legendary cars in the dust, the ZR1 makes its comeback in 2019 with a motor so insanely powerful yet easy to control and available at a third of Ferrari 812 SF’s cost.

American automobile industry has always been looked at as the muscle producing industry. In the ’50s when many native car makers were experimenting with their cars, Chevrolet introduced an iconic sports car which marked the breakthrough of the US automobile industry from a muscle producing industry to a multi-faceted industry.

From the open roof design to the third generation’s timeless design inspired by the Mako shark to the latest angular and aggressive design, the Corvette has come a long way and has made a distinct mark in the automotive industry.

It was the love and support from its supporters that fueled the company’s idea to carry on with the ZR1. From the first gen Mako shark inspired design to the latest generation featuring angular and aggressive looks, the Vette ZR1 has always been popular among the people.

Let’s get behind the wheel to know more about this beast.

2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 Coupe Features

The 2019 ZR1 comes with 2 trims, 1ZR and 3ZR. The Vette ZR1 comes with a base price of $121,995 and goes up to $131,995 for the top trim. Chevrolet offers a 7-speed manual transmission with Active rev matching for both the trims.

This car is not just a sports car, it is a supercar slayer which comes with a powerful 6.2L supercharged V8 engine as standard for all the trims, which produces 755 hp and 715 lb-ft of torque. This time, Chevrolet is offering its iconic sports car in a new avatar, a convertible, for the first time in the history of ZR1.

The 1ZR variant is the base variant which comes pretty much loaded with everything except for some additional personalization options and some interior features which come as either standard or are optional for the 3ZR.

We recommend – Though both the trims are relatively same with some extra personalization options offered with the top trim. We recommend the 1ZR as both the trims offer similar performance. Though you will get some personalization options with the 3ZR, the 1ZR will be perfect for both daily drives and track madness. Also spending an additional $2995 will get you the ZTK track performance package that will add a crazy 9” rear spoiler along with some additional mechanical upgrades.

2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 Coupe Engine

”This $130,000 supercar slayer is even more potent than the already outrageous Corvette Z06. It's supercharged, just like the Z06, but it's even more powerful. Thanks to a reworked supercharged V8, it cranks out an astounding 755 horsepower” - Edmunds

Engine and Transmission-

Under the hood, Chevy has installed a monstrous 6.2L V8 engine which produces 755 hp and 715 lb-ft of torque, making it the craziest and the fastest Corvette to date. The mammoth like stats that this car has, are enough to put any sports car and even some supercars on the wall of shame.

As soon as the ignition is turned on, the sleeping beast gets ready to get unleashed. With a slight force on the gas, the engine gives out the earth-shattering sound of the V8. The burbling sound of the motor feels even better when compared to its younger sibling, the Z06. Definitely, this car is a head turner, but when taken to a track, this gas guzzler becomes a monster which spits power like anything.

When compared to its competitors, the ZR1 takes a clear victory interms of power and performance among its competitors. The jaguar f-type SVR takes the second position followed by the Acura NSX. The most expensive car, 911 GT3 RS finishes at the last position with the least power output of just 520 hp and 346 lb-ft of torque.

When it comes to transmission, the ZR1 comes equipped with a 7-speed manual transmission which feels smooth while shifting gears. The manual feels easy to use and the gear shifting feels predictable and friendly, but not instantaneous.

Acceleration-

The ZR1 packs a powerful V8 motor under the hood that makes this gas guzzling beast a track monster destroying many cars out there. As soon as the pedal hits the floor, the hidden beast gets unleashed spitting out a ton of power that torments the asphalt by its downforce generated by the optional big wing.

The ZR1 is a throttle friendly car with great throttle response. Even a slight force on the gas makes it spit more power and sound than any of its competitors.

The F-type trails behind at the last position with a time of 3.5 seconds.

Braking-

The brake pedal on the new ZR1 gives a natural feel while decelerating. Also, the Brembo carbon ceramic brakes give this a great stopping power and took 88ft to come to a dead standstill from 60 mph. the brakes are strong and the performance is quite impressive whether on streets or on a track.

Ride and Handling-

As soon as the rider gets behind the wheel, the car gives strong controlling vibes to the rider. The ride feels slightly harsh on the rough surface but when driven on asphalt, the ride feels as smooth as a cakewalk. Like its younger sibling, the Z06, the ZR1 comes equipped with 4 driving modes to give the rider a unique driving experience. Not like many other exotics which are preserved to rot, this car is meant to be driven without showing mercy on the tires and asphalt.

The steering wheel is precise and well weighted. The movements are well balanced and the rider feels confident as the car feels in full control of the person behind the wheel. The car lands just perfectly where the rider wants it to, without any slipping or overturning.

Taking its power into consideration, the car takes turns quite impressively and quickly with negligible body roll that the rider won’t notice too easily. If let loose on a track, the ZR1 will definitely torment the asphalt with such a great amount of power under it.

2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 Coupe Fuel Economy

A true performer, the ZR1 proves to be a real gas hungry car because of its gas-hungry engine present under the hood. The F-type takes the pole position with the highest MPG value among the cars listed here.

2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 Coupe Interior

“For a relatively small two-seater, the Corvette surprisingly doesn't feel cramped. The control layout is thoughtful, and the driving position is quite adjustable” - Edmunds

Seating and Comfort-

Whenever we come across a 2-seater car, the first thought that comes to our mind is about roominess and how spacious it is from the inside. Surprisingly, vette, being a two-seater, is quite spacious and roomy. Kudos to Chevrolet’s designers for making a 2-seater performance sports car spacious.

The car has comfortable seats which are sturdy as well. Due to the presence of an adjustable steering column, the rider can get the perfect driving position and feel comfortable while riding without getting tired. When behind the wheel, the supercharger is slightly visible, thereby blocking the visibility as it sticks an additional 4” above the hood. The Cabin materials have been improved from the previous generation vette, but a lot of plastic is visible.

Getting in and out of this car becomes slightly difficult as the rider needs to get low to enter and also because of the aggressively designed dashboard and steep windshield. While inside the cabin, there is a lot of engine sound coming inside and feels really loud, but makes the ride even more thrilling and fun with the raw sound of the engine getting in the ears.

Like its younger sibling, Z06, the ZR1 has very driver-centric controls which are slightly tilted towards the rider for better convenience. While the interior of the 1ZR looks quite simple, there is a lot of personalization options that come with the 3ZR as either standard or optional, to give the car personal touch. Chevy also offers an option to add an owner’s name plaque on the center console, which takes the personalization to a whole new level.

Infotainment-

The aggressively styled dashboard of the ZR1 sports an 8” touch screen, just like its younger sibling Z06. The display looks crisp and vibrant with menu and options beautifully displayed on it. There is also a small secret storage place behind the display screen which can be accessed by pressing a button placed near the screen. A ride recording cam is present inside the cabin which points towards the windshield and can record a ride for the rider to review it in future.

This car comes with a host of entertainment features to keep the rider entertained and make every ride full of fun. The car has an array of features like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a 9-speaker Bose sound system with the 1ZR or 10-speaker premium Bose sound system with the 3ZR variant.

Also present on the dashboard is a small transparent HUD which displays all the vital information and keeps the rider focused on the ride, but it competes for the visibility with the hood bump. The gauge cluster is very informative and displays many vital stats and information related to the ride and car.

Cargo space-

Many people think that coupes don’t offer enough cargo space. Chevy took this statement as a challenge and showed the world that coupes can offer a generous amount of cargo space. The vette offers the highest amount of cargo space among its rivals.

2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 Coupe Competition

Corvette ZR1 1ZR coupe v/s Porsche 911 GT3 RS

In this battle of the American supercar slayer and the Stuttgart champ, the 911 gives the ZR1 a tough competition in some segments like performance, fuel economy. The 911 beats the ZR1 in 0-60 test by just 0.1 second, the 911 proves to be quite expensive when its price tag is considered. Both the cars are great but if you are on a tight budget and want a car which has an insane amount of power, then the ZR1 is the car for you. On the other hand, if you want a hardcore track performer with no upper limit on your wallet, then the GT3 RS is a perfect choice.

Corvette ZR1 1ZR coupe v/s Acura NSX Coupe

There is something different about the relationship between Americans and Japanese. When these two are pitted against each other, the ZR1 clearly takes the crown and shuts its rival’s mouth in almost all of the segments. Though the NSX provides a great amount of luxury with performance into it, the ZR1 takes the performance quotient to an insane level but makes the interiors quite basic. The ZR1 is definitely for those who can live with simple interiors and play with the beast present under the hood. The NSX, on the other hand, is for those who want a car which maintains a perfect balance between luxury and performance.

Corvette ZR1 1ZR coupe v/s Jaguar F-type SVR Coupe

The SVR, when pitted against the ZR1, gives a tough competition to the vette in almost all of the segments. The SVR offers a great array of luxury, with some performance into its blood. As both of these cars have similar price tags, the svr is for those who want to spend their week in luxury with just a day on the track, while the ZR1 is for those who want to spend their entire week in a track oriented car.

2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 Coupe Final Verdict

With the latest iteration of Chevy’s gas guzzler, the 2019 ZR1brings even more fun and thrill to the rides with an insane amount of horsepower present under the hood.

The blue devil’s elder sibling comes with even more oomph to make people stare at it with their mouths open. The optional package adds more aggressive styling to this beast with a big 9” carbon fiber rear spoiler to the front carbon fiber splitter with side skirts making it look even more aggressive and stealthy.

The new ZR1 stands as a car which justifies its price tag so well that leaves the buyer with no excuse to look for any other car present out there. Just a glance of this car is enough to make anyone fall in love with this beauty.
