Detailed Review

Making a small car is tough. You need to compromise on style, the performance of the vehicle is middling to say the least, and these are usually cramped at the back. But the 2017 Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback is not just another small car.
It scores on all these factors, to an extent and is here to compete with the likes of the Hyundai Elantra GT, the Toyota Corolla iM and the Ford Focus SE Hatchback. The Cruze does offer long-distance comfort and a cabin larger than the rest. Along with that the practicality in the cabin also takes this car to a whole different level.

When the Chevrolet first launched the Cruze in 2010, it was a bold move, considering how the previous Chevrolet Sedans have fared in this price range. But the sales of the first two generations of the Cruze show that it was a correct decision. This car is a beast in real sense and competes with disdain here with the likes of the Ford Focus S Sedan and the Honda Civic LX. With a starting price of $16,975, the 2017 Chevrolet Cruze is priced significantly at par with all its rivals, but this price difference does make a difference in the performance of the car, which remains top notch when compared with others and offers a host of features which the rivals can just dream of. The Cruze offers long distance comfort to a whole different and houses a cabin larger than the rest. Along with that the practicality in the cabin also takes this car to a whole different level.

2017 Chevrolet Cruze Features

7.2/10

The 2017 Chevrolet Cruze Sedan comes in four trims. Both these trims are powered by a 1.4-liter Turbo DOHC 4-cylinder engine that generates about 153 hp at 5500 rpm and 177 lb-ft of torque at 5000 rpm. It is a five-passenger car and gives a combined fuel economy of 32 mpg. There is a turbodiesel 1.6-liter variant as well, but that is way too expensive than the rest.

All the trims are offered in Manual as well as automatic transmission, something which was unheard of previously.

While the Base version contains all the basic features that one requires in this price range, I would suggest going for the LS variant as it gets the Chevrolet MyLink system and remote keyless entry amongst other features at not much a price difference.

2017 Chevrolet Cruze Fuel Economy

The 2017 Chevrolet Cruze Sedan gives a fuel economy of 28 mpg in the city, and 39 mpg on the highway. These figures are amongst the best when it comes to this parameter.

2017 Chevrolet Cruze Interior

7.8/10

The inside of the Chevrolet Cruze Sedan is the place to be. The seats and the fabric used is top class, so is the designing of the dashboard, although, the space for the infotainment system could have been designed better.

The switches and the steering has a premium feel to it, something usually seen in high-level cars.

Seating and Comfort

The Chevrolet engineers must be applauded here as they have created a seat; somewhere you can sit for long and not get tired. The back and under thigh support has great, so is the knee room.

The seats are made up of premium leather and can be 6 way adjusted. They offer a foldable armrest too, and offers decent room for 5 people to fit in generously, with more than adequate knee and head room.

Interior Features

  • The interior features include;
  • Alarm
  • Back-Up Camera
  • Cruise Control
  • Vehicle Anti-Theft System
  • Fog Lamps (Optional)
  • Auto-Off Headlights
  • Keyless Start (Optional)
  • Rear Parking Aid (Optional)
  • Front Reading Lamps
  • Remote Engine Start (Optional)
  • Adjustable Steering Wheel
  • Steering Wheel Controls

Infotainment

The Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system might not be the best in business, but it does manage to do the work required of it.

The system is easy to use and although it could have been much better integrated with the dashboard, that is not too big an issue to look into.

Also, it does have the basic features like:

  • AM/FM Stereo
  • Auxiliary Audio Input
  • MP3 Player
  • Satellite Radio
  • Premium Sound System (Optional)
  • WiFi Hotspot
  • Smart Device Integration

Cargo

The Chevrolet Cruze Sedan does have a decent sized trunk which can easily hold a few duffle bags among others. It has a wide opening with a flat surface, which is good for inserting and removing those heavy bags.

However, the trunk could have been bigger considering the size and the price of the car.

Here, the Honda Civic leads the pack with a storage space of about 15.1 ft3, closely followed by the Chevrolet Cruze with figures around 14.8 ft3. The Focus, the best in many ways comes last with storage of 13.2 ft3

One thing worth mentioning here is the fact that all these cars, despite being decently sized doesn't boast of a real big trunk, something usually associated with a sedan.

2017 Chevrolet Cruze Exterior

8.5/10
"The aggressive front wing does hold true what the name Cruze suggests. The car looks sleek and stylish from the outset. And the bold roof rails along with the alloys give this car, a premium feel."

Dimension and Weight

The practical designing and weighing of this car definitely adds up to its features as this car ha loads of room on the inside, just because of the way it has been designed from the outside.

The Cruze definitely has the best dimensions in this segment, and that is the very reason for the loads of the space this car has to offer on the inside.

Another thing worth mentioning about this car is its ground clearance. At 6.4 inches above the ground, this Cruze definitely shows its off-road capabilities.

2017 Chevrolet Cruze Competition

Ford Focus Sedan vs Chevrolet Cruze

The fight between the Ford Focus and the Chevrolet Cruze goes right down to the wire. While the Focus score on the acceleration and braking part, the Cruze seems more practical and spacious from the outset. The fuel economy of these cars is same.

The trunk size is almost similar too. However, the comfort In the Cruze is much more than that of the focus, which doesn’t boast of the best seats either. So the Cruze definitely pips the Focus in this regard.

Honda Civic vs Chevrolet Cruze

As bluntly as it may sound, but the Civic is no match to the Cruze. The acceleration, braking, fuel economy, comfort, you name it and the Cruze wins it hands down!

The only thing going in the favor of the Honda Civic has to its cheaper price and a slightly bigger cabin. However, these things are too small considering the magnitude of the cars of this segment, this making the Cruze a clear winner here.

2017 Chevrolet Cruze Final Verdict

The 2017 Chevrolet Cruze definitely lives up to its name, offering a stylish design and a built quality that would envy a lot of car manufacturers. Its stance and suspension makes an absolute beast on the highway. The specifications in terms of the power and fuel economy are top notch too. The comfort is out of this world, considering this segment.

The only minor blip one could see has to be the accerelation of the car and the trunk volume, which like I said earlier is not too big an issue.

So, the all road package of the Chevrolet Cruze is definitely the one you should go for, considering the price and the feature on offer. While an outside pick would be the Ford Focus sedan, but only if you are okay to compromise on comfort and score on style.

Pros

Crisp Exteriors

Excellent steering

Increased Practicality

Cons

Acceleration

Less space in the trunk opening

What's New?

The new 2017 Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback has definitely upgraded on practicality, because of which the interiors too have been redesigned.

The previously fuel-thirsty engine now gives exceptional figures.
