2019 Chevrolet Cruze diesel Hatchback Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

CARHP Editorial Updated on: October 31, 2019

Chevrolet has given a massive upgrade to the Cruze lineup in 2019 in lieu of falling sales and rising expectations from the customers. What makes the Cruze Diesel Hatchback unique, is the fact that it is one of the very few survivors of the diesel-powered vehicles in the country. The 2019 Cruze Hatchback is a tiny pocket rocket that offers loads of torque and a stupendous MPG figure.

The 2019 Chevrolet Cruze is powered by a 1.4L turbocharged, 4-cylinder motor that generates 137 horsepower and 240 lb-ft of torque. Chevrolet claims an overall MPG figure of 35 and a range of 480 miles, which makes it one of the best hatches to consider in case of long-distance touring. Available in just one trim namely the LT, the Cruze Diesel Hatch is priced at $26,120.

Considering the increase in consciousness among the masses pertaining to the environment and reducing emissions, small diesel engines have seen a big downfall in the US automobile market. There are just a handful of cars that are being sold in the country that run on diesel powertrains. The Chevy Cruze is among them. The hefty starting price of over 26 grand takes it to some rather competitive territory. For the same price tag, you can have a Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, or Hyundai Elantra, all of whom come with the option of a manual transmission. The Mazda 3 Hatchback is another rival that packs in more power and numerous standard features.

The 2020 Chevrolet Cruze Diesel Hatchback comes in just a single trim which is based on the LT trim of the gas-powered model. Apart from taxes and destination charges, the hatch retails at an MSRP of $26,120. A few packages can be added on for more safety and convenience features such as LED headlamps and blind-spot monitoring, keeping the car well up to date with contemporary automobiles.

Since the Cruze hatch comes in just one trim, it is the only one to go for. You can also opt for the Driver Convenience and Driver Confidence packages for several additional features that make living with this hatchback a bit more comfortable.

2019 Chevrolet Cruze diesel Hatchback Engine and Performance

"The Cruze is slow to accelerate, but it’s plenty capable at highway speed. The Cruze's engine stop-start function is smoother than those found in competitors, but you can't disable it, which you might find annoying in stop-and-go traffic." –Cars, US News

Engine and Transmission

The 2020 Cruze Diesel hatchback comes powered by a turbocharged 4-cylinder motor that belts out a modest 137hp at 3750 rpm and a gargantuan 240 lb-ft of torque at 2000rpm. In the real world, the 1.4L motor’s response is just average, to say the least. Most office commuters or city travelers will feel the lack of punch and power when traveling alone. However, load the Cruze with 3-4 people on board and you will be surprised with how the Cruze maintains speed and picks up from standstill. On the whole, we would still prefer the Diesel as it feels punchier to drive than the gas-powered motor.

Transmission duties are performed by a 9 Speed Automatic specifically developed for this motor. The engine isn’t the dullest to respond and doesn’t go to the top gear. The engine is clever to not change gears while doing a hill climb and engages the lower gears during the same.

Compared to the gas-powered motor, the Diesel Cruze hatch rakes in better acceleration figures than the same courtesy of the mammoth torque on offer. On the move, the Cruze behaves well and provides good bursts of acceleration while performing overtaking maneuvers in the city or out in the highway.

We do however hate the rough nature of the Diesel Motor as it tends to get Noisy and produce a lot of Diesel Clatter at high RPMs, which might become uncomfortable for people inside the Hatch.

Ride and Handling

The ride and handling department of the Cruze has to be one of its strengths. The Cruze absorbs speed bumps and undulations well while not being too bouncy on normal conditions.

The Cruze also shines on the highway and on twisty roads. The suspension is well-tuned to take corners well and provides very little body roll, aiding driver confidence. The light sporty steering responds to the smallest of inputs on the highway and provides good feedback when tackling sharp bends or high speeds.

The Braking in the 2020 Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback is pretty good as compared to other cars in the segment. The brakes offer good feel and bite and respond well to the pressure applied by the driver. The brakes are not overly responsive or touchy but they do tend to provide good stopping power with gentle feedback.

The Standard 4 Wheel ABS and Traction Control with Electronic Stability Program and Electronic Brake Force Distribution ensures the brakes don’t lock up during panic braking situations and provide stability to the hatchback. This coupled with the relatively less weight enables the Cruze Hatch to notch up one of the best 60-0 timings in the segment.

2019 Chevrolet Cruze diesel Hatchback Fuel Economy

Most people going for the Cruze diesel will have the MPG figure as the top priority while buying the diesel hatch. The Cruze doesn’t disappoint here as the 2020 Cruze Hatch delivers a super impressive 35 MPG of combined mileage. Add in the 13.7-gallon fuel tank of the Cruze and you have on your hands a 480-mile range on a full tank of fuel.

2019 Chevrolet Cruze diesel Hatchback Interior

"The Cruze has an attractive, handsome cabin. Soft-touch materials abound, and even the hard plastics are smooth and well-built so they don’t feel jarring. The standard touch-screen display further contributes to the Cruze’s modern feel." –Cars, US News

Seating and Comfort

The interiors of the Cruze are mostly dominated by colors like brown, grey, and black. The dashboard has plenty of buttons for controlling audio, A/C, etc. The center of the dashboard houses a big 7” touchscreen that supports Chevrolet's MyLink infotainment system, which supports a lot of connectivity features.

The Cruze is a compact hatchback by dimensions. However, most people will find the interiors anything but compact. There is a generous amount of headroom for passengers in the front and rear while the legroom will be adequate for most passengers. Ingress and egress aren’t much of an issue as well courtesy of the high roof and the wide door openings.

5 passengers can be made to sit in the Cruze but making 3 adults sit at the back won’t be a good proposition for long drives. The rear seats are narrower as compared to segment leaders like the Honda Civic and the raised center tunnel furthermore reduces the practicality of the middle seat in the rear.

Cargo Capacity

Chevrolet has generously carved out cargo space inside the 2020 Cruze Hatchback. The loading floor is flat and coupled with the big cargo area allows the Cruze to gulp in plenty of luggage and cargo. There are numerous cubby compartments and small storage spaces in the cabin of the Cruze as well.

The trunk lid is big and opens to reveal a big cargo space. The spare tire in the LT and the Premier trim eats up some of the big cargo space but the 60/40 split rear seats pave way for some more useful storage space. The Honda Civic with a thoughtfully laid out cabin offers the most cargo space while the Elantra GT comes in a close second.

Infotainment System

Chevrolet has updated and upgraded the infotainment system of the 2020 Cruze Hatchback. The 7” Chevrolet Infotainment 3 System, offered as standard across all trims of the 2020 Cruze is Chevrolet’s take on Cadillac’s CUE infotainment system. It’s intuitive, easy to learn, simple to operate, understand and has all the functionalities one would ever need from a Modern Car infotainment System.

Infotainment Features

  • 4G LTE Wi-Fi Hotspot connectivity
  • Chevrolet OnStar services
  • Android Auto and Apple Car Play Compatibility
  • 3 USB Ports
  • Auxiliary Cable Input
  • Bluetooth Connectivity
  • SiriusXM Satellite Radio with 6 months of a free trial
  • Navigation System

2019 Chevrolet Cruze diesel Hatchback Exterior

"The Cruze was hardly looking old, but slight updates for 2020 help keep it fresh. Most notable is the new front fascia, which features a larger, more pronounced grille. In back, the Cruze is snazzier with a new, dual-element taillight design, with LED versions available on the Premier trim" –Kelley Blue Book

Design and Styling

Chevrolet has done slight changes to the exterior design of the Cruze. The front fascia is all-new for 2020 with a more pronounced and big grille, housing the legendary “Bowtie” logo. There are LED inserts in the headlamps and the tail lamps have been given the LED treatment as well in the LT and Premier trims.

New 18” alloy wheels have been added to the Premier trim that adds to the visual appeal of the hatchback and makes it look bigger than it is.

Dimensions and Weight

The Cruze is neither the tallest in its class, neither the longest nor the widest. It has compact exterior dimensions that give it a balanced stance in comparison to the rest. The Cruze has a considerably wide body as compared to most of the cars in this comparison and this gives the Cruze its generous interior space.

The compact dimensions also help the Cruze get an advantage while moving in narrow streets or confined areas. Moreover, it provides an edge while parking in crowded parking lots.

Ground clearance (in)

The Cruze also has one of the best ground clearances in the segment. This means the underbody of this compact Hatchback will stay protected from big speed humps or other obstructions that it may have to cross.

Exterior Features

The Chevy Cruze has always been one of the most handsome looking hatchbacks in the segment. Small tweaks have been made to the exteriors of the Cruze hatchback which we feel will be only visible to keen observers. The 2020 edition comes with features like

  • New Bigger Front Grille
  • Dual Element LED Tail Lamps
  • Redesigned Head Lamps with LED treatment on the Top Trims
  • New Design 18” Alloy Wheels
  • Rear Spoiler
  • Rear and Front Intermittent Wiper
  • Outside Powered Mirrors

We, however, do miss the front fog lamps which Chevrolet has omitted from all trims of the Cruze. These could have been added at least for the top trim for added safety during night time/ foggy conditions.

2019 Chevrolet Cruze diesel Hatchback Safety

Considering the rapid increase in the Fatalities from road accidents, manufacturers have been diverting their attention to making their cars safer than ever. The 2020 Cruze Hatchback doesn’t want to be at the bottom of the list and Chevrolet has added some good set of safety features in the 2020 Cruze Hatchback. Some standard safety features include:

  • 10 Airbags including Side Curtain, Knee, and Front
  • 4 Wheel ABS with Electronic Brake Force Distribution
  • Teen Driver Assist Feature
  • Theft Deterrent Unauthorized Entry System
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System with Display
  • Chevrolet Connected Access
  • Rear Vision Camera
  • StabiliTrak Electronic Stability Control with Traction Control

We do however feel that some modern safety features like Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Change Assist, and other similar features should have been given as standard as the competition already provides them so. You can, however, get that as a part of the optional Driver Confidence package.

2019 Chevrolet Cruze diesel Hatchback Competition

Chevrolet Cruze Sedan vs. Ford Focus

While there are no Diesel Hatchbacks in the country today, we are comparing the Focus sold in the UK as our reference. The Ford Focus sets the benchmark in the segment in terms of the handling and performance. The Cruze on the other hand deliver great Fuel efficiency and will give you far lesser trips to the Gas station. The Choice is clear though. If you want a mile muncher and you are OK with Decent handling and stability, the Cruze is the one to go for while if you want a complete driver’s car, there is still no beating the Ford.

2019 Chevrolet Cruze diesel Hatchback Final Verdict

With the diesel engines facing extinction in the US, it’s very rare that you can get a diesel city hatch on sale in the country today. However, GM is still persisting with its diesel powertrain and giving it probably one last Hurrah in the form of the Cruze Hatch. The 2020 Chevrolet Cruze gets everything done what the gas-powered Cruze does but delivers far superior MPG figures and a slightly better driving feel. Overall, if long-distance commuting is on your mind and you wouldn’t want to spend most time going to the gas station, the 2020 Chevrolet Cruze Diesel Hatch is definitely the vehicle that will suit your needs well.
