Detailed Review

Making a small car is tough. You need to compromise on style, the performance of the vehicle is middling to say the least, and these are usually cramped at the back. But the 2017 Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback is not just another small car.
It scores on all these factors, to an extent and is here to compete with the likes of the Hyundai Elantra GT, the Toyota Corolla iM and the Ford Focus SE Hatchback. The Cruze does offer long-distance comfort and a cabin larger than the rest. Along with that the practicality in the cabin also takes this car to a whole different level.

2017 Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback Features

The new 2017 Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback has definitely upgraded on practicality, because of which the interiors too have been redesigned. The previously fuel-thirsty engine now gives exceptional figures.

The 2017 Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback comes in two trims. Both these trims are powered by a 1.4-liter Turbo DOHC 4-cylinder engine that generates about 153 hp at 5500 rpm and 177 lb-ft of torque at 5000 rpm. It is a five-passenger car and gives a combined fuel economy of 31 mpg. Both the trims are offered in Manual as well as an Automatic Transmission mode, something which was unheard of previously.

Features

LT steps up to 16-inch alloy wheels The Cruze Premier gets everything above plus 17-inch wheels, an upgraded rear suspension
Upgraded headlights with LED running lights, heated mirrors Chrome exterior accents
Cruise control Ambient interior lighting, and illuminated vanity mirrors
Steering-wheel-mounted phone and audio controls
A rear center armrest with cupholders, and a six-speaker audio system with satellite radio
Hatchback models also get a cargo cover and rear spoiler.
The USB port is added to models equipped with the automatic transmission, while manual-equipped models have a front armrest with a sliding feature

We Recommend

While the Base version contains all the basic features that one requires in this price range, I would suggest going for the Premier variant as it gets bigger tires and a better rear suspension at not much of a price difference. Buying the Automatic or the Manual variant is totally up to the buyer, depending on the type of use.

2017 Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback Engine

7.2/10

“The Cruze’s base engine is a 153-horsepower, turbocharged gasoline four-cylinder that is lively enough for most daily driving needs. A six-speed manual transmission comes standard, and a six-speed automatic is available. An available 137-horsepower four-cylinder turbodiesel engine comes with a smooth-shifting nine-speed automatic transmission. The turbodiesel’s extra torque gives it sprightlier acceleration and more oomph for highway passing.” Cars.usnews.com

The 2017 Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback is powered by a 1.4-liter Turbo DOHC 4-cylinder engine with a 6-speed manual transmission as standard and produces about 153 hp of power at 5500 rpm and 177 lb-ft of Torque at 5000 rpm. The Cruze is best to run on Gasoline and this is where the full capability of the car is on the display.

Here, all the rivals are different in their own ways. While the Hyundai Elantra and the Ford Focus offers a 2.0-liter engine, the Corolla too has a 1.8-liter engine. What comes as a surprise is that despite such big engines, their Power and Torque generation are nearly the same as that of the Cruze, while in the case of the Corolla, they are worse.

The Elantra and the Corolla, both offer a 6- speed manual transmission, and the Focus offers a 6 speed Automatic. The Cruze is the only one of its rivals to offer both.

Acceleration

The Cruze’s engine does fine in all parameter barring this where it is just a bit slow of the blocks at 8.4 seconds, about a second slower than the Ford Focus at first place. The emission from the Cruze is the least.

The Focus is the fastest amongst all the parameters here with the Elantra being a close second. The Cruze and the Corolla take the other two positions here.

Ride and Handling

Much like the previous Cruze Sedan, this one too makes you convince that it has far more credentials than it actually does. The steering and the fine suspension tuning do prove this. The steering has just the right amount of weight to it which makes the Cruze feel responsive and nimble, especially for those highway rides.

Though, the dynamics are surely in for some complaints. This car is short and hard braking makes it go nose-diving, well almost! The ride quality could have been better too with problems regarding the car hopping around while passing over a pothole being the most glaring.

 Braking

There is no surprise in here as the Cruze, placed in the middle when it comes to acceleration, has decent brakes, two things which are generally proportional. However, hard braking should be avoided on this car as it tends to nosedive.

The Corolla takes the longest to stop, again not coming as a surprise considering that its acceleration wasn’t the best in business either, while the Elantra and the Focus take the top two places with similar figures.

2017 Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback Fuel Economy

7.8/10

The 2017 Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback gives a fuel economy of 28 mpg in the city, and 37 mpg on the highway and 31 mpg combined. These figures are amongst the best when it comes to this parameter.

Seating and Comfort

This is something where the Chevrolet engineers have done an exceptional job. The seats are of top-notch quality. Made of premium leather, they provide perfect under thigh and back support. They boast in practicality as well as are inclined towards styling.

The rear seats are better and much more comfortable. However, passengers over 6 feet are going to have a hard time. The Headroom is fine for a normal sized adult, while the knee room is more than adequate.

Infotainment

The Chevrolet Cruze hatchback does not boast of the best infotainment present in this segment. Although, it does what is required of it. However, the whole infotainment panel could have been integrated better with the dashboard.

Also, it does have the basic features like:

  • 3 Months of provided satellite radio service
  • 6 total speakers
  • USB connection
  • Auxiliary audio input and USB with external media control
  • Satellite radio satellite radio
  • AM/FM stereo

Cargo

The Chevrolet Cruze hatchback does have a decent sized trunk which can easily hold a few duffle bags among others. It has a wide opening with a flat surface, which is good for inserting and removing those heavy bags. However, it could have been even bigger, considering the dimensions of this car.

Here, the Ford Focus leads the pack with a storage space of about 23.8 cubic feet, closely followed by the Hyundai Elantra GT and the Chevrolet Cruze with figures around 23.0 cubic feet. The Corolla, like many other parameters, comes last with storage of 20.8 cubic feet.

2017 Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback Exterior

7.2/10

“We just like the sleek and swoopy shape. The front-end elements are all spot-on, with no one thing dominant, and the same in the rear. It's not the most out-there styling for a compact sedan, but the slightly more conservative lines will wear nicely over time, we think.” Kelley Blue Book

Dimension and Weight

The Cruze does live up to its name, with it having quite an expressive look. It is fair to say that the Cruze has to be the sleekest and the most practical car in this segment. The Cruze boast of the best dimensions in this category, somewhere five passengers can fit in, very comfortably.

The one thing this Cruze can brag about has to be its Ground Clearance. At 5.6 inches above the ground, it is the best in class, and leaves it competitors’ behind, although not by much!

2017 Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback Competition

Hyundai Elantra GT VS Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback

The Chevrolet costs $3,000 more than the Hyundai Elantra. It does even have the smallest engine amongst the peers but still, generate appreciable figures. The designing and space inside the cabin is another bonus. The Fuel economy is too, top class and as is the ground clearance.

However, the Elantra has the best braking and acceleration. But the overall package which the Cruze offers is too good to ignore, making it the clear winner.

Toyota Corolla VS Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback

Again, like the Elantra, the Corolla is priced $2,000 less than the Cruze, which could be massive while selecting a car. But in this case, that is the only thing which goes the Corolla’s way. Acceleration, braking, fuel economy, cabin space, you name it and the Chevrolet Cruze wins it hands down.

The Toyota product might score on luxury, but considering all these aspects, it is fair to say, The Cruze wins this battle quite easily.

Ford Focus Hatchback VS Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback

The fight between the Ford Focus and the Chevrolet Cruze goes right down to the wire. Both generate decent values of torque and power. Now, the Pickup and braking of the cars are similar as well. What is difficult to digest is that both have the similar fuel economy as well. However, Ford takes the leads with a bigger trunk and the more spacious cabin that easily accommodate 5 people.

2017 Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback Final Verdict

The New 2017 Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback is stylish, elegant and sleek. The fuel economy, trunk size, and the braking are top class. But the main attraction towards this car has to be its sleek and its practicality, which has been mentioned a lot. All in all, this Cruz hatchback looks beautiful and performs admirably.

However, the problem lies in the acceleration and ride quality of the car. While the seats are great, they might not be that good for those long rides. The ride quality too gets a bit shaky when on a bad road.

However, if you want an all-round package, the Chevrolet Cruze would do the job with great specifications which work well in some cases while bad in others, an outside pick would be the Hyundai Elantra or the Ford Focus hatchback. Both these cars are cheaper than the Cruze and offer better ride quality, sans the feature which the Cruze has to offer.
