Okay, we feel sorry to break it to you here, but the interior of the Chevrolet Equinox has not aged all that well. The basic layout is something that we have been seeing from 2010, the year which saw the launch of the second generation of this midsize SUV. Though the space, comfort, and refinement levels are on par for the class, it feels “dated” and “last-gen” here. Pronouncing that effect, even more, is the 7-inch media screen that looks dull and pixelated.

2016 Chevrolet Equinox Dashboard

Though we like the design of the instrument console, the central digital display feels ancient and fails to exude the sort of sophistication that some of its competitors offer. Overall, the insides of this SUV are crying out loud for an update. So can this old $22,600 midsize SUV match rivals like the Subaru Forester, the Honda CR-V, and the Nissan Rogues in terms of tech, comfort, and appeal? Let’s find out.

How comfortable is the 2016 Chevrolet Equinox?

Let’s get one thing straight out of the way here, firstly. If you are someone expecting outright appeal when entering the cabin, the 2016 Chevrolet Equinox would not be the first choice we would recommend. In fact, we wouldn’t even have the Equinox in our recommendation lists honestly. You can, however, consider this SUV for its space and comfort. That is something that the Equinox has got right every time and though dated, is one thing that won’t change. There is a definite sense of space and does feel like a bigger SUV given its high-set seats. The seats are very accommodating and although not too fancy-looking, offer some real support at every point of contact.

2016 Chevrolet Equinox Front Seats

The base trims have to do with fabric seats that feel a bit firm, but they actually do you good on long trips. Spend more and you could opt for some nice perforated leather-appointed seats with power adjustability and heating function, the latter two offered in the front row. There is a decent amount of space to move around and the ergonomics do feel good for accessibility and comfort on long drives. The second row is also pretty comfortable and you do get a flat floor. Surprisingly, amenities like AC vents and USB ports are absent on this row even on well-equipped trims.

39.8/56.5/38.0

38.6/56.4/38.3

38.5/55.9/37.9

Even though the 2016 Chevrolet Equinox has the highest body width and wheelbase in the segment, it does not translate into actual cabin space, say apart from the rear legroom. In fact, it has the lowest shoulder room and also falls in the middle of the pack when it comes to the front legroom. The Subaru Forester and the Honda CR-V seem to offer the most expansive cabins here tanks to the most shoulder room on offer. The Nissan Rogue, though not as big as the other Japs here, does get bigger front seats than the Chevy whiles falls to the back of the pack when it comes to second-row space.

Some standout interior features of the 2016 Chevrolet Equinox include:

  • 8-Way Power- heated front seats
  • Driver seat and mirror memory functions
  • Leather wrapped steering with cruise control/tilt/telescopic adjustment
  • Polished metal/silver cabin inserts
  • Automatic climate control system
  • Available leather interior upholstery with dash/door panel inlays
  • Keyless entry system

How intuitive is the 2016 Chevrolet Equinox’s infotainment system?

Although Chevrolets MyLink system comes as a user-friendly system, it has started showing its age. The animations look vintage and the touch responses are not the quickest. The screen also has a weird tint to it that gets worse when light directly falls on the screen.

2016 Chevrolet Equinox Infotainment System

It does handle basic tasks pretty well but using the onboard navigation system feels very tacky and does take a lot of time. Features like 6-speaker audio system, Bluetooth audio streaming, voice activation, and 4G connectivity comes as standard, while navigation, satellite radio, Pandora services, and 8-speaker Pioneer Premium audio system require you to jump up trim levels.

Standout infotainment features available with the 2016 Chevrolet Equinox:

  • 7-Inch infotainment touch screen (7-inch MyLink system available)
  • Bluetooth hands-free/satellite radio
  • Optional Navigation
  • Voice activation
  • OnStar with 4G LTE and built-in Wifi hotspot.
  • 6-speaker performance audio system (8-speaker Pioneer system available)
  • Steering mounted audio controls

What are the creature comfort features inside the 2016 Chevrolet Equinox?

On that topic, the 2016 Chevrolet Equinox can be equipped with amenities like heated and powered front seats, keyless entry, an automatic climate control system, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with cruise control, a premium audio system, and a whole lot more. The trunk is decently sized and should hold your weekend getaway luggage easily. However, the further you go down the trim line, the more basic the SUV starts to feel more so than some of its closest rivals.

What is the cargo capacity on offer?

The boot space is surprisingly low in the 2016 Chevrolet Equinox although it visually suggests otherwise. The 31.5 cu.-ft. of space available, though is decent on its own, does fall to the back of the pack, and that too, by a mile.

2016 Chevrolet Equinox Cargo Space

However, the 60:40 folding rear seats do bump up that area to almost 63.5 cu.-ft. There is no under-tray storage as well with the space tire eating up most of the space, which inadvertently also raises the loading floor by quite a bit.

The Nissan Rogue just eats the competition here with its massive 39.3 cu.-ft. trunk, beating the Honda CR-V, which usually comes out on top in this department. The Subaru Forester comes in third with nearly 35 cu.-ft. on offer, but does find it hard to match the best in class. With the rear seats eating most of the wheelbase advantage it has, the Equinox falls to the bottom of the ladder with the smallest trunk on offer here.

What are the other storage spaces inside?

Talking about cabin practicality, there is not a lot here. You get a bunch of door pockets, cup holders, and a center console compartment with a USB. The lower dashboard has a couple of pockets in it, but a medium size phone from these days would find it hard to stay in place there. The trunk also has a couple of cut-outs over the wheel arches in which you could store small stuff that you don’t want moving around in the cabin.

So, is the interior of the 2016 Chevrolet Equinox luxurious and opulent enough?

Given the age and dated styling of the Chevrolet Equinox’s interior, luxury and opulence would be two words that we would refrain from using. Even though the higher trim levels do bring in a sense of ‘premiumness’, it is far from the best of what we have been seeing from this price class these days. Don’t get us wrong here, the overall comfort quotient is up there for what this segment has to offer, but the sense of satisfaction or worthiness of the place for what the SUV costs, is definitely missing. What was supposedly cool in the 2010s, is not in 2016, so it is high time that Chevrolet redid the Equinox.
