2020 Chevrolet Equinox Price, Review, Ratings and Pictures

The Chevrolet Equinox comes mostly unchanged for 2020 and benefits from more standard technology and safety features. Starting from $24,995, the 2020 Equinox may be priced higher than many of its competitors but offers plenty of legroom and cargo space. It has numerous strengths, that simply make it a more pleasing package.

Though not many are fans of Equinox's standard turbocharged 1.5-liter engine, the larger 2.0-liter turbocharged is powerful than most in the class. The Chevy delivers a smooth, and comfortable ride. Among the four trim levels, the LT is a more popular option available with both FWD and AWD configurations. Here's a more detailed review of the 2020 Equinox below: The compact SUV segment offers other popular options including Honda CRV and Toyota RAV4.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The 2020 Chevrolet Equinox competes against some of the popular compact SUVs such as the Honda CR-V, and the Toyota RAV4]. The key strengths of Equinox include its larger dimensions than most of the competitors, but that does not make it any more spacious. For 2020, Chevrolet has dropped the diesel engine, however, the two available gas engines are some of the most powerful options in the class.

Adding more value, the 2020 Equinox has a long list of standard features including standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. New standard driver assistance techs like automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and lane-keep assist are standard. Here's a more detailed review of the 2020 Chevy Equinox:

Features
8.0/10

The 2020 Chevrolet Equinox comes in 4 trims and 2 different engine configurations to suit the needs of different customers. The base Equinox L carries a starting price of $24,995 while the top-of-the-line Equinox Premier costs up to $33,995 with AWD. The standard 1.5L motor is standard on all trims while a more powerful 2.0L turbocharged motor is up for grabs in the LT and the Premier trims. Customers have the option of choosing between Front Wheel Drive and AWD configurations in the available trims except for the base L which is only available in the 2WD option.

Chevrolet has also introduced a special edition of the 2020 Equinox on the 2.0L turbocharged engine called the Redline Edition. The changes are mostly cosmetic which adds a black grille, black mirror caps, black window trim, and black Bow-Tie emblems to the standard Equinox.

We Recommend

The base “L” trim will be a good choice for most customers, who are looking for a decently equipped SUV. For people who want AWD for all-weather capability, you will have to pay almost up to $1600. However, those looking for more power should invest in LT trim which is available with a larger 2.0l engine along with a good amount of technologically advanced features.

Engine and Performance
7.7/10

The standard 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder is more than satisfactory. With a 6-speed automatic driving either the front wheels or all four wheels, the little turbo handily gets the Equinox goingKBB.com

The 2020 Chevy Equinox comes standard with the base 1.5L turbocharged 4 cylinder engine that generates 170 horsepower and 203 pound-feet of torque. The Equinox Lt and Premier models are available with a more powerful 2.0L turbocharged engine delivering 252 hp and 260 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission is paired with the 1.5-liter motor while the larger 2.0-liter gets a nine-speed transmission unit.

The 1.5L unit does a decent performance but it is the larger and more powerful 2.0-liter engine you will want. The Equinox LT with a 2.0-liter turbo-four engine delivers brisk acceleration, rated at 6.8 seconds for its 0-60 mph lap. This Chevy delivers good performance on tarmac or on hilly road conditions. The engine also delivers good gas MPG of around 32 MPG on the Highway. The capable chassis and great handling of the package add to the overall fun factor in the driving experience of the Equinox.

2020 Chevrolet Equinox SUV engine bay

The 2020 Chevrolet Equinox’s acceleration ranks among the best in the class partly due to the powerful engines on offer and the nicely balanced weight distribution in the chassis. Sure, it doesn't have the athletic ability of the Mazda CX-5 or even the Honda CR-V, yet the Equinox feels plenty sporty. One of the downsides of the equinox is its big turning radius which ranks amongst the biggest in class, despite its compact proportions.

To match the superb driving dynamics of the 2020 equinox, the engineers at Chevrolet have provided potent braking units to Equinox. The brakes offer good bite and feel with the pedal effort required being adequate for reducing speeds. The brakes are confidence-inspiring and the ABS doesn't feel intrusive. With low curb weight and potent brakes, the 2020 Equinox needed 121 feet to stop from 60 mph. This performance is above average in the class. The Honda CR-V matches Equinox’s class-leading braking distances while the big heavy but sporty Mazda has the weakest times.

Fuel Economy
7.8/10

The 2020 Chevrolet Equinox returns one of the best gas mileage in the class, EPA estimated at 28 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway.  The larger turbocharged unit gets EPA ratings of 22/29 mpg. These figures are for the FWD variant while expecting a drop of around one MPG for the AWD variants. The 14.9L fuel tank capacity offers a decent driving range about 462 miles on the highway.

The Ford Escape has the worst fuel economy in this group. It returns 21 miles to the gallon in the city and 29 miles to the gallon on the highway. The 2020 Honda CR-V gets better MPG ratings among all the rivals.

Interior
7.5/10

This Chevrolet seats five. Both rows of seats have ample space, though the optional sunroof limits headroom for taller occupants. There's plenty of support for all-day driving, and overall comfort is on par with many rivals – Cars.USnews.com

The 2020 Chevrolet Equinox doesn’t disappoint when it comes to interior comfort. The Equinox gets bucket seats that have an adequate amount of cushioning and gives a comfortable seating position to riders of all shapes and sizes. We, however, don’t like the awkward positioning of the AC vents and the lack of adjustment options on the lumbar support.

2020 Chevrolet Equinox SUV cockpit area

The 2020 Equinox manages to offer a good level of headroom and legroom to the passengers in the front. Seating 3 people abreast at the back and none would be uncomfortable. The crossover offers a good amount of shoulder room and leg room for passengers to rest their legs. One of the very few areas where the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox disappoints, is in its cargo space. Despite being a 5 Seater, the Equinox offers 29.9 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats.

2020 Chevrolet Equinox SUV front seats

Chevrolet has updated the infotainment system of the 2020 Equinox to keep pace with the competition. The 2020 Chevrolet Equinox comes with standard 7-inch touch screen powered by Chevy's Infotainment 3 system. The standard features include a six-speaker audio system, two USB ports, Bluetooth, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and a Wi-Fi hot spot.

Looking the part of a younger and smaller sibling to the midsize Chevy Traverse, the new Equinox retains a fresh look all its own–KBB.com

The current generation of Chevrolet’s follow a similar design theme across the lineup and the 2020 Equinox is no different. At the front is a familiar-looking Chevy grille with a big Bow-Tie logo in the front which will remind you of the new Cruze and the Malibu. The character lines flow through the front wheel arch and split through the midway. The rear end doesn’t look the best as the tail lamps and the design might remind you of smaller hatchbacks from Chevrolet.

2020 Chevrolet Equinox SUV

The 2020 Chevrolet Equinox isn’t a compact SUV in literal terms. The dimensions of the Equinox are equivalent to bigger SUVs. The Equinox, however, isn’t the tallest in its class and the sloping roofline adds to that feeling. Despite its ‘not so small’ dimensions, the Equinox is one of the easiest cars to maneuver in the city.

The NHTSA gave the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox five out of five stars for its overall safety. The IIHS designated the 2020 Equinox its Top Safety Pick and gave it the highest rating of Good in six crash tests. For the crash-prevention system, the Chevy earned the highest rating of Superior.

The 2020 Chevy Equinox comes with ample standard driver assistance features including a rearview camera, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, forward collision warning, forward automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, a rear-seat reminder, and Chevy's Teen Driver system.

2020 Chevrolet Equinox vs 2020 Honda CR-V

There is no denying the fact that the Honda CR-V is one of the best SUVs in the segment. It flaunts an easy-to-understand infotainment system and best-in-class storage space. The CR-V additionally has a rich lodge that offers two lines of seating and has enough space to oblige grown-ups.

Honda CR-V

The Equinox, however, offers a better fuel economy in the cities and a higher level of passenger space at the rear. The Chevrolet’s infotainment feels more intuitive to use as compared to the Honda’s slightly “clumsy” feeling unit.

2020 Chevrolet Equinox vs 2020 Mazda CX-5

The Mazda CX-5 is one of the most Sportiest SUVs in the segment. The Mazda offers one of the best 2nd-row seating arrangements in the class as well. When it comes to the off-road ability, both the SUVs are nearly matched and have potent 4WD systems.

Mazda CX-5

The Chevy Equinox, however, offers similar performance at a lower price and also edges out the Mazda in terms of MPG in the city.

2020 Chevrolet Equinox vs 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan

The Volkswagen Tiguan has to be one of the best-built SUVs in the segment. The car has been solidly put together and exudes presence in flesh. It also has a potent AWD system in the form of the 4Motion technology on offer.

Volkswagen Tiguan

The Equinox, however, offers a more powerful motor and a far better driving experience on all terrains.

Final Verdict

The new 2020 Chevrolet Equinox is one of the more feature-rich SUVs of its class. The Chevy fares well in offering ride quality, passenger space, and interior sound isolation. The Equinox also gives you the option of a powerful 2.0L motor.

The Equinox, however, lacks in terms of cargo space offered and in terms of the number of standard safety features on offer. All in all, if you are in the mood to buy a big American SUV that offers the thrills of the Mazda CX-5 and the practicality of the Honda CR-V, the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox is the SUV to go for.

Affordable SUV with underwhelming power

Pros - Good passenger space, smooth ride and poised handling

Cons - Underwhelming engine, low quality cabin, high ownership cost, and subpar cargo space.

Impractical SUV with poor acceleration. My father helped me lease Equinox for 2 years to commute to my school every day for my master's program in Greenwood. During my summer holidays my friends and I went on a trip to Huntington Beach State Park on my Equinox because the spacious cabin can fit my entire gang, and also the ride quality is better than any other car. But during that holiday trip, ...
