Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

In 2022, Equinox receives an update that has the potential to take it to the top of the segment and make it a more compelling pick. This makeover was originally intended for 2021, but it got delayed almost by a year because of the pandemic. The SUV receives a refreshed front fascia, and you get an all-new grille with new LED headlights. The interiors have been touched up a bit, but still, it remains budget-grade to say the least. With this, the 2022 Equinox rivals the likes of Honda CR-V, Ford Escape, and Subaru Forester.

2022 Chevrolet Equinox Features

The 2022 Chevrolet Equinox, other than the four trims L, LS, LT, and Premier, has added a sporty RS trim to its lineup. The base trim starts at $25,000, the LS trim starts at $27,500, the LT trim starts at $29,000, the Premier trim starts at $33,000, and the all-new RS trim, which is now the topmost trim, will have a starting price of $34,500. Except for the base L trim, all the trims can be had with AWD by paying extra.

We Recommend

We recommend the LT trim for the Equinox as it not only gets the necessities but also has better high-intensity discharge headlamps over the halogen units. To make it more clear, the models equipped with high-intensity discharge headlamps were given the ‘Top Safety Pick’ award by the IIHS.

The Chevrolet Equinox is expected to start from $25,000, and the prices could go up to $35,500 for the topmost RS trim.

Release Date:

There is no clear date as to when you can get yourself one of the 2022 models, but you can expect the new Equinox model to come out in the third quarter of 2021.

2022 Chevrolet Equinox Engine and Performance

For 2022, the larger 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine has been dropped from the Equinox line-up. Now, the lone 170 hp, 1.5-liter turbo four-cylinder putting out 203 lb-ft of torque will do the duty on the 2022 Equinox. Front-wheel drive is standard, however, you also get all-wheel-drive as an option. The six-speed automatic, which comes as standard, shifts seamlessly.

The lethargic turbo-four powered Equinox does 0-60 mph in 8.7 seconds and quarter-mile comes at 16.9 seconds. The rival Subaru Forester is quicker with 0-60 mph coming in 8.5 seconds and a quarter-mile in 16.7 seconds. Next is the Ford Escape with 0-60 mph time of 8.9 seconds and a quarter-mile time of 16.6 seconds.

The ride and handling of the Equinox will not be anything special to write about. Being a jacked crossover, the ride and handling are compromised, and the Equinox isn’t suited for bumpy roads, courtesy of the big 19-inch rims. If you plan to go for this car, then get the 17- or 18-inch rims in place of the 19-inches. None of the crossovers are as powerful as the Ford Escape, which also incidentally makes it among the most enjoyable SUVs to drive, thanks to 190 hp and 179 lb-ft of torque on tap, followed by the Honda CR-V with 182 hp and 176 lb-ft of torque.

2022 Chevrolet Equinox Fuel Economy

The EPA estimates that if you choose the front-wheel-drive variant of the Equinox, then you should get 31 mpg while on the highways, 26 mpg driving around in the city, and 28 mpg combined. If you choose the heavier all-wheel drive, the mpg ratings drop by about 1 mpg across all the terrains. With a 14.9-gallon fuel tank, you can expect 417 combined miles of range from a tankful.

The Ford Escape and Honda CR-V have almost similar fuel efficiency of 28/34/30 mpg in city/highway/combined, respectively. Next comes the Subaru Forester with 26/33/29 mpg of fuel efficiency. The Subaru Forester happens to have the biggest 16.6-gallon fuel tank among all. When comparing the overall range, Subaru has the most at 481 miles.

2022 Chevrolet Equinox Interior

The cabin of the Equinox will not just inspire a broad range of customers, it will probably keep its shape and shine for a long period as well. Yes, the materials inside are quite durable, and they are nicely styled too. In terms of features and how they are arranged, most of the luxuries that you can get are distributed among the higher trim levels as either standard or optional. This is the reason why it will be a good idea to skip the base trim altogether as it makes little sense to pay that money for very few features. The standard upholstery material is fabric, while you can also get leather on the higher trim versions.

The touchscreen display sits comfortably in the center of the dashboard. The controls for audio and climate are placed in convenient and simple spaces too. The cabin is quite utilitarian too as you will find plenty of cupholders at convenient places. You get a capacious center console storage bin, but aside from these, the cabin storage is quite average. Both the front and the rear seats are spacious enough and are equipped with enough luxuries to keep everyone contended for a long period. Apart from the cabin being useful and roomy, the seats are plenty comfortable and supportive too. The rear bench reclines and has good legroom.

The Honda CR-V and the Ford Escape are the most spacious of the bunch, followed by the Subaru Forester. Moving to the cargo space, the Honda CR-V has the biggest 39.2 cubic feet of cargo space, followed by the Ford Escape with 37.6 cubic feet of cargo space. The Forster gets 30.9 cubic feet of cargo space, while the Chevy Equinox has the smallest 29.9 cubic feet of cargo area.

The 2022 Equinox gets a 7.0-inch touchscreen as standard, while an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system is available. Standard features include USB, Android Auto & Apple CarPlay, and Bluetooth connectivity. Along with this, Equinox also gets a 7-speaker Bose premium sound system, a satellite radio, and a navigation system. Further, it provides wireless charging for the devices and a 4.2- inch digital driver display. The highlights of the infotainment system include:

  • 7” touchscreen upgradable to 8”
  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
  • Multiple USB ports
  • 4G LTE network onboard Wi-Fi hotspot capability
  • AUX Input
  • Bluetooth audio streaming

2022 Chevrolet Equinox Exterior

For the 2022 model year, you get new fascia, both at the front and the rear. Starting from the face, the grilles are now wider and sport a more aggressive design. New slimmer LED headlights have been given to highlight the front fascia of the SUV. The new RS trim certainly looks the sportiest out of the bunch with the gloss black grille, blacked-out badging, and dark 19-inch wheels among other elements.

The Premier trim, which used to be the top-tier trim before the RS trim came in, also gets some changes to retain some supremacy. You can now have LED headlights, gloss-black chrome, and logo protection on the power tailgate. For 2022, you get some spicy visual options too, with the quad exhaust outlets, which certainly makes the aesthetic look quite sporty. All these updates should keep Equinox reasonably fresh for years to come.

Thankfully when it comes to dimensions, the 2022 Chevrolet Equinox is the longest crossover at 183.1-inch and comes with the biggest wheelbase of 107.3-inches. Compared to that, Honda CR-V and Subaru Forester are 1-inch shorter, and both have an approximately 2-inch smaller wheelbase than the Equinox. The Subaru Forester has the biggest ground clearance of 8.7-inches, followed by the Ford Escape with 8.6-inches of ground clearance. Highlights of the exterior include:

2022 Chevrolet Equinox Safety

Chevrolet has equipped the Equinox with a wide range of driver-assistance tech, both as standard and optional. The SUV is yet to be crash-tested by either NHTSA or IIHS since it is a fairly new model. The 2020 Chevrolet Equinox was tested and got a ‘Top Safety Pick’ award by the IIHS and an overall five out of five star rating from NHTSA. That being said, the wide range of standard safety features that you get with Equinox will surely make the owners feel a lot better about the safety of this vehicle. The features are listed below:

  • Forward-collision warning
  • Automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Teen Driver system
  • IntelliBeam automatic headlights
  • Lane-keeping assist with lane-departure warning

2022 Chevrolet Equinox Competition

2022 Chevrolet Equinox Vs 2021 Honda CR-V

Many consider the Honda CR-V as the benchmark of the segment, and for good reasons too. The CR-V has a comfortable ride, a quality interior, and one of the largest cargo holds in the class to offer. Unlike Equinox, the CR-V also delivers a robust performance and capable handling complemented by impressive efficiency like typical Hondas. The cargo space is the biggest in the CR-V, and overall, the product is superior to Equinox in all respects.

2022 Chevrolet Equinox Vs 2021 Ford Escape

Both American-borne crossovers and still both are poles apart in what they offer. If one was to pitch the Escape against the Equinox, then the former would come out as a more refined and better product in all respects compared to the latter. That said, there is hardly any reason except for brand loyalty to ditch Escape for Equinox.

2022 Chevrolet Equinox Vs 2021 Subaru Forester

The 2021 Subaru Forester is quite easily one of the best crossovers in the segment when it comes to the driving experience. The Forester is a balanced offering with loads of torque, better interior space, and almost similar fuel economy. Compared to that, the Equinox is just a mediocre offering here and nothing much to write home about.

2022 Chevrolet Equinox Final Verdict

The 2022 Chevrolet Equinox may not be the most compelling, but it is surely among the most good-looking products in the segment. This redesign aims to work on the compelling factor that the SUV performs. There are still some chinks in the armor which the carmaker has failed to deal with. That would include the interior quality, the weak four-cylinder engine, the ride quality which is quite harsh, and inferior storage space. If you think that’s a lot of negatives, the SUV also is comparatively pricier than what it offers. Then why should you buy this SUV? For the agile on-road behavior, the tons of passenger space, and the generous infotainment features. Those who are unfazed by mediocrity and are okay with spending more for a product from a bow-tie brand will only appreciate this rather unremarkable crossover.
