Chevrolet has finally released the 2022 Equinox in the market and is available for sale with prices starting at $25,800. It received a light exterior refresh, a few interior features, and a new trim called RS. The 2.0L turbo-4 engine is no longer offered in the Equinox. Powering the Equinox is just one engine now which is a 170-hp 1.5L turbo-4 that delivers good fuel economy but the engine power is mediocre.

2022 Chevy Equinox three-quarter view

The Equinox's cabin is a mixed bag as its roomy interior offers comfortable seating but the interior quality is not up to the mark. It also gets a lot more driver-assist features than its rivals, which is really assuring. As far as the competition is concerned, the Equinox competes in the popular compact SUV segment and takes on the likes of popular SUVs like the Honda CR-V, the Ford Escape, and the Subaru Forester.

The Equinox remains competitive with its comfortable manners, roomy interior and a starting price that slightly undercuts rivals- Autotrader

The refreshed Chevy Equinox brings some new changes in the exterior design and a few tweaks to the interior. One of the biggest highlights is the addition of the new RS trim this year. All these updates are a compelling move for the Equinox against its rivals in the popular compact SUV segment. Chevy intended to do all these changes for the 2021 model year but it was postponed due to the global pandemic.

The Equinox sure has an affordable initial price but buyers will have to compromise on its high ownership costs. Even its American-borne rival, the Escape has lower running costs compared to the Equinox. The true cost to own it is $7,000 per year. This includes repair, maintenance, fuel, depreciation, etc. Moreover, the Equinox has scored less than its rival in terms of reliability.

2022 Chevrolet Equinox Engine and Performance

7.0/10

The Equinox is surprisingly fun to drive- Edmunds

For 2022, the larger 2.0L four-cylinder turbocharged engine has been dropped from the Chevy Equinox lineup. Now, the lone 1.5L turbo four-cylinder engine will do the duty on the 2022 Equinox. This engine puts out 170 hp and 203 lb-ft. of torque. The six-speed automatic, which comes as standard, shifts seamlessly. FWD drivetrain is standard, however, you also get AWD as an option.

2022 Chevy Equinox engine

The ride and handling of the Equinox will not be anything special to write about. Being a jacked crossover, the ride and handling are compromised, and the Equinox isn’t suited for bumpy roads, courtesy of the big 19-inch rims. If you plan to go for this car, then get the 17 or 18-inch rims in place of the 19-inches. Also, the steering feels numb and doesn't inspire confidence in the driver.

2022 Chevy Equinox front driving view

In terms of performance, the lethargic turbo-four powered Equinox does the 0-60 MPH sprint in 8.4 seconds while the quarter-mile time comes in at 16.3 seconds. These are very weak performance stats compared to its rivals. On the flip side, its braking performance is quite good. The pedal travel is good and the brakes are sturdy. Thanks to its low curb weight, the Equinox records a braking distance of 121 feet.

The quick-shifting 8-speed automatic of the Ford Escape helps it to achieve snappy acceleration. The Subaru Forester is the only SUV here with a standard AWD system but its 2.5L engine delivers sluggish acceleration. Although the Honda CR-V uses a CVT, its performance stats are decent.

Gas mileage is one Equinox strength- The Car Connection

This is the area where the small engine of the Chevy Equinox shines. The EPA estimates that if you choose the FWD variant of the Equinox, then you should get 26 MPG in the city, 31 MPG on the highways, and 28 MPG combined. The AWD Equinox drop down the fuel economy by about 1 MPG.

2022 Chevy Equinox driving view

FWD versions get a 14.9-gallon fuel tank whereas AWD variants come fitted with a larger 15.6 gallons. You can expect 417 combined miles of range from a thankful whereas the AWD versions can travel up to 421 miles thanks to its large fuel tank. However, its rivals have a better driving range as they house a larger fuel tank.

The fuel estimates of the Ford Escape and the Honda CR-V are identical but the CR-V has the best efficiency in this competition. The Subaru Forester's highway ratings are better than the Equinox while its large fuel tank helps it to gain a top place in terms of driving range. Overall, the Equinox's fuel economy is reasonably good.

Made from durable materials and nicely styled, the Equinox's cabin should draw broad appeal- CarAndDriver

The cabin of the Chevrolet Equinox does not just inspire a broad range of customers, but it will probably keep its shape and shine for a long period as well. Yes, the materials inside are quite durable, and they are nicely styled but they are subpar. There's a lot of hard plastics. The standard upholstery material is fabric, while you can also get leather on the higher trim versions. The new RS trim boasts black upholstery with contrast red stitching.

2022 Chevrolet Equinox dashboard

The front seats are well-cushioned to provide you with good comfort and support for longer drives. The driver's seat offers a wide range of adjustments on higher trims with heated functionality. The rear seats are spacious and have a good recline angle. There's tons of space in both rows. However, if you opt for the panoramic sunroof, it may cut some headroom for taller peeps. All in all, the Equinox has comfortable seating but the interior quality is mixed.

2022 Chevrolet Equinox infotainment system

The 7 or 8-inch touchscreen display sits comfortably in the center of the dashboard. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard in the Equinox. The Chevrolet 3 infotainment system has a smooth interface and an easy-to-understand menu structure. A 6-speaker stereo is standard but a 7-speaker Bose audio system can be ordered for some extra bucks. The controls for audio and climate are placed in convenient and simple spaces too.

With regards to cargo space, the Equinox has a truck volume of 29.9 cu-ft. This increases to 64 cu-ft. when you fold the rear seats. The cabin is quite utilitarian too as you will find plenty of cupholders at convenient places. You get a capacious center console storage bin, but aside from these, the cabin storage is quite average. The highlights of the Equinox's cabin are:

  • Tilt & telescopic multi-function leather steering wheel
  • 8-way power driver's seat
  • Heated front seats
  • Panoramic sunroof
  • Auto-dimming rearview mirror
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control

The 2022 Equinox features updated styling that gives it a more mature look- MotorTrend

For the 2022 model year, the Chevy Equinox gets a new fascia, both at the front and the rear. Starting from the face, the grille is now wider and sports a more aggressive design. New slimmer LED headlights have been given to highlight the front fascia of the SUV. The new RS trim certainly looks the sportiest out of the bunch with the gloss black grille, blacked-out badging, and dark 19-inch wheels among other elements. The Premier trim also gets some changes to retain some supremacy.

2022 Chevrolet Equinox three-quarter view

You can now have LED headlights, gloss-black chrome, and logo protection on the power tailgate. All these updates should keep Equinox reasonably fresh for years to come. For 2022, you get some spicy visual options too, with the quad exhaust outlets, which certainly makes the aesthetic look quite sporty. The standard wheels in the Equinox are 17-inch alloys but you can upgrade to 18 and 19 inches. The wide wheelbase of the Equinox speaks for its roomy interior.

Comparatively, the Subaru Forester has the highest ground clearance in this competition, standing at 8.7 inches. This is great for off-road adventures. The Honda CR-V sports a short wheelbase but it doesn't hinder the rear legroom. In fact, it assists in a quicker burnout while accelerating. The Ford Escape's overall length turns out to be less than the Equinox, good for tight parking spaces. Highlights of the exterior include:

  • 17, 18 & 19-inch wheels
  • HID & LED headlights
  • LED taillights
  • LED DRLs

The Equinox comes with a wide range of standard and optional driver-assistance technology- CarAndDriver

Only NHTSA has crash-tested the 2022 Chevy Equinox. It received an overall five out of five stars rating. We are considering IIHS ratings of the 2021 model's ratings both of them belong to the same generation. The SUV was tested and got a ‘Top Safety Pick’ award by the IIHS. Therefore, the Equinox is indeed a safe vehicle.

2022 Chevy Equinox IIHS crash test

Chevrolet has equipped the Equinox with a wide range of driver-assistance tech, both as standard and optional. 2022 Chevrolet Equinox vs 2022 Honda CR-V

Many consider the Honda CR-V as the benchmark of the segment, and for good reasons too. It has a comfortable ride, a quality interior, and one of the largest cargo holds in the class to offer. Unlike Equinox, the CR-V also delivers a robust performance and capable handling complemented by impressive efficiency like typical Hondas. Overall, the CR-V is superior to Equinox in all respects.

2022 Honda CR-V

2022 Chevrolet Equinox vs 2022 Ford Escape

Both American-borne crossovers and still both are poles apart in what they offer. The Ford Escape is available with two engines and it also offers a quicker acceleration. Its fuel economy is also better than the Equinox. On the infotainment front, the Equinox offers a larger touchscreen with smartphone integration whereas it is optional in the Escape. More safety features keep the Equinox forefront.

2022 Ford Escape

2022 Chevrolet Equinox vs 2022 Subaru Forester

The Subaru Forester is quite easily one of the best crossovers in the segment when it comes to the driving experience thanks to its responsive handling but its engine power is mediocre. Both the SUVs have spacious interiors but the Forester's cabin is more refined. Also, its cargo hold is one of the best in the segment. Compared to that, the Equinox is just a mediocre offering here.

2022 Chevrolet Equinox Final Verdict

The 2022 Chevrolet Equinox may not be the most compelling, but it is surely among the most good-looking products in the segment. This redesign aims to work on the compelling factor that the SUV performs. The SUV has its flaws like an average interior quality, the weak four-cylinder engine, and average inferior cargo storage space. Then why should you buy this SUV? For the agile on-road behavior, the tons of passenger space, and the generous infotainment features. Those who are unfazed by mediocrity and are okay with spending more for a product from a bow-tie brand will only appreciate this rather unremarkable crossover.

Cons - Bland styling, small cargo area and despite the turbocharged engine it doesn't feel lively.

compact SUV with subpar acceleration and cargo volume. My Equinox is a five-seat crossover SUV that lies at the crossroads of affordability and utility. Pros - Best resale value--Adequate performance--4G LTE Hotspot with smartphone integration

Cons - Everything is perfect in my Equinox

Worth every single penny It is my third Chevy and, I've been a proud admirer of the carmaker for the past 10 years. Previously I owned a 2011 Malibu and traded it last year with a new Equinox as an upgrade from a sedan to SUV. I believe that Chevrolet cars have the best resale value and adequate performance and features. Its 1.5L turbo engine packs enough power and accelerates rapidly with good gas mileage of 25+mpg. I prefer buying it if you're looking for a fuel-economical and feature-packed compact SUV. The sales...

Pros - Maneuverability--Comfy rear cabin--Punchy turbo engine

Cons - Cheap-looking interiors--Limited rearward visibility

Comfortable yet cheap cabins The Chevy Equinox is easy to maneuver and has ample space to fit my family. The rear seats are comfortable for my dad, who recently undergone knee surgery. It has more legroom and headroom making it ideal for long durations. The turbocharged 1.5L engine delivers the required power to the front wheels and makes the rides punchy. But the plastic quality used in the dashboard looks cheap and doesn't deserve the price tag of $29K. There was no pressure with the transaction and the sales team...
