There are several options for you if you want to have a seven-passenger or even an eight-passenger van. However, if you have to carry 12 people around, your options are very much limited. The 2022 Chevrolet Express 3500 Passenger Van Diesel is a full-size van that is now a trusted workhorse for many businesses and personal users alike. Despite the minimal changes that have come to it during all these years, the reason that it has always sold in large numbers is that it has provided the very basics when it comes to transportation. The vans are far from being comfortable, but they are some of the only things that can get the work done.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The 2022 model is priced at an MSRP of $43,695 for the LS trim and is provided with a 2.8 L turbocharged Diesel engine. There are also two gasoline engines – a 4.3 L V-6 and a 6.6 L V-8 engine that was introduced last year offered but that is reviewed separately. It competes against the likes of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Passenger Van, Ford Transit Passenger Van as well as its corporate sibling - the GMC Savana 3500 Passenger Van. Few main features of the Chevrolet Express 3500 Passenger Van are described in detail in the sections to follow.

Features
7.5/10

The Chevrolet Express 3500 Passenger Van is offered in two trim levels - LS and LT, and unlike the cargo van, this is available only in one load rating. The lower load rating - available as 2500, is not provided in the passenger versions. The standard wheelbase length is 135 inches long, while an upgraded 155-inch wheelbase option is available. We get a 2.8 L turbocharged 4 cylinder diesel engine producing 181 hp and 369 lb-ft and having sufficient towing capacities. The LS trim comes with vinyl seats, manual air-conditioning, 16 steel wheels, power windows and locks, 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, rearview camera, two-speaker stereo system, and so on.

We Recommend

Between the LS and LT versions, since the price difference is only about $2000, we would recommend you buy the LT trim level. Going for the extended wheelbase will add an additional row of seats and increase the total passenger capacity to 15 passengers. Hence, this would depend on your use. We recommend buying the LT trim level of the Express 3500 as that is the option in which the van truly exercises its strength. If you’re looking for 12 to 15 passengers to travel in relative comfort, there are very few deals that come close to this particular van. It is a little better equipped than the cargo version.

2022 Chevrolet Express 3500 Passenger Van Diesel Release date

The release date of the 2022 Chevrolet Express 3500 Passenger Van Diesel has not yet been announced. However, we know that all cars from Chevrolet follow the GM rollover sequence. This would mean that the 2022 vehicle will launch in the third quarter of 2021 all over North America. Followed by this, the cars will be available in dealerships soon afterward and deliveries will start subsequently. We can expect that the 2022 models will be available by the start of next year although if you’re in a hurry, you can purchase the 2021 vehicle since it barely carries forward with any changes.

Engine and Performance
7.0/10

The 2022 Chevrolet Express 3500 Passenger Van is offered with a 2.8 L turbocharged diesel engine that produces 181 hp and 369 pound-feet of torque. The only transmission offered is an eight-speed automatic transmission while the drivetrain is rear-wheel drive. There are no all-wheel-drive versions and no other powerful engines available in diesel configurations. The gasoline engines are also available but that is reviewed separately.

Refinement is mediocre but one cannot really complain about the diesel as it has certain advantages. The van can have a maximum towing capacity of 6,300 pounds and a payload capacity between 3000 and 4145 pounds depending on the configuration. It gives a body on frame construction and hence we have such a high load rating. Either way, it should be enough for passengers. Although it is pointless to talk about acceleration, the van impresses nevertheless with a 0 to 60 mph time of 8.5 seconds even with the diesel engine.

From the results, we can see that the Transit is a very powerful vehicle in the class but it is only available in a petrol variant. It is hence the least expensive vehicle out of this lineup. The Mercedes is the most expensive and also the most luxurious van but it is the least powerful. The GMC is identical to the Chevrolet mechanically but is priced at a slight premium. The GMC’s strengths are its drivetrain itself and that is still very much perfect for business owners looking for a great transport solution. The Ford Transit has excellent performance and is faster in terms of acceleration.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

The Chevrolet does not plan to fool anyone by claiming large fuel efficiency figures. Although diesel is much better in terms of fuel efficiency compared to its petrol counterparts, it still does not provide a lot. It goes without saying that fuel efficiency will go for a toss with an engine that is big and can tow a lot of loads. But that is not the case with the Duramax diesel in the Chevrolet. It offers 18 MPG within city limits, 24 MPG on the highways, which results in combined fuel efficiency of 22 MPG. However, its biggest advantage is that the fuel tank is massive at 31 gallons in size. This makes for a great range of 744 miles on the highway which is unparalleled.

The Ford really impresses the most with its amazing fuel efficiency figures as it is also one of the more powerful cars of the bunch. However, its only let down is that the fuel tank is nearly half the size of the GMC and Chevrolet. The Mercedes also proves that it has excellent fuel efficiency but the trade-off for that was the huge drop it took in terms of performance.

In this regard, we feel that the vans from GM have struck a good balance by providing adequate performance as well as fuel efficiency. In terms of range, it is the GM twins that have the most because of their rather large fuel tanks. We find that Mercedes and Ford have their own unique strengths in this department but in terms of long-distance hauling, it would be the Chevrolet that will come out on top.

Interior
6.0/10

The interiors of the Chevrolet Express are its biggest let-down. It is one of the most basic and bare-bones interiors that you will find. It might very well be the most low-quality interior that is in the market in 2022. They were designed with only practicality in mind and have survived without an update for a very long time - about 19 years. It is one of the oldest cabins even among commercial vans and even though it was adequate for the cargo versions, we feel that the passenger versions should be a little better. Material quality is terrible and so are other features.

The lack of a higher roof option is also a slight disadvantage in terms of practicality as many passengers will have to walk around to get to the rear seats. Cargo capacity is nearly non-existent due to most of the space in the van being filled with seats. Like we have mentioned before, Chevrolet has not taken time to re-engineer this van in any way or introduce any changes that will make it more contemporary. We are expecting a new model of the van to come out in 2023 and this should be much better in terms of the interiors.

The Mercedes-Benz sets the benchmarks in terms of most aspects of the interior. It provides much more high-quality interiors as well as seating for about the same number of passengers. The only area where the GMC and the Chevrolet excel are in terms of interior space offered. The Mercedes and the Ford strike a good balance of offering a large number of convenience features.

However, the Ford has a big disadvantage because it offers only seating for 10 passengers. However, one main advantage of most of its competitors is that they offer higher roof versions for passenger vans. The main interior features of the 2022 Chevrolet Express 3500 Passenger Van include:

  • Vinyl bucket seats
  • 12 passenger seats
  • Air Conditioning
  • OnStar 4G LTE networking and WiFi hotspot
  • Rear camera
  • Carpeted flooring

How intuitive is the infotainment system in the 2022 Chevrolet Express 3500 Passenger Van Diesel?

The infotainment system is the most basic it can get and looks pretty much out of place in the year 2022. However, Chevrolet has given it certain updates over time to keep it bearable. With features like navigation being offered only as an option, one feels that this van is from a decade ago and one would be right about that. The sound system is also a very basic setup with only two speakers and most passengers will find it hard to even hear it. Again, this is fine for the cargo version but the passenger brand should definitely do better. The main infotainment features include-

  • 2-speaker system
  • AM/FM Radio
  • CD player
  • Touch Screen Interface
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • Wi-Fi capability
Exterior
7.0/10

On the exterior, the Chevrolet Express looks exactly like it had 19 years ago. One can rest assured that it will not attract anybody with its exteriors. It has been the face of business establishments all over the North American continent and that lends it a bit of iconic status. The design is the exact same as what it was for all the past model years and does not make use of anything new or fancy to enrich its appearance. We believe that it needs an update at least now to stay in the market. The van is also very heavy at 5345 pounds and quite large in terms of dimensions.

The Mercedes-Benz is the biggest car in this category. It is bigger than its rivals in all aspects except width, where the Ford is a bigger car. The Chevrolet and GMC are somewhat smaller in certain aspects but are quite heavy at 5345 pounds. The Mercedes seems to have the lowest ground clearance where the Chevrolet has an adequate amount of it at 8.6 inches. When equipped with the longer wheelbase version, Chevrolet Express is the longest van in this category. The main exterior features include:

  • Swing-out 60/40 passenger side doors
  • Sliding side doors
  • Optional Chrome bumpers
  • Optional Dual composite headlamps
  • Black bumpers
  • 16-inch wheels
Safety
7.0/10

The Chevrolet Express 3500 Passenger Van has not undergone any sort of crash test in all of the years it was produced. Commercial vehicles are usually exempted from these tests - be it NHTSA crash testing or IIHS crash tests. Hence we cannot assume anything about its safety in a conclusive manner. However, its safety features have been the most basic that one can find in cars today and does not leave one to be too optimistic. The engineering that has gone behind the van is also very archaic and hence won’t be anything special in terms of safety. We are not very hopeful that this will be a very safe vehicle. The main safety features include:

  • Anti-lock disc brakes
  • Stability control
  • Front-side airbags
  • Side-curtain airbags
  • Stabilitrak traction assistance
  • Backup camera and rear parking sensors
Competition

2022 Chevrolet Express 3500 Passenger Van Diesel Vs. 2022 GMC Savana 2500 Cargo Van Diesel

As we have observed, the Chevrolet Express and the GMC Savana are the exact same cars in terms of nearly every single aspect that one can think of. However, the GMC is offered at a slight premium and is also a little lighter. These do not however translate to more performance or any better interior quality. So it would depend on brand loyalty whether you would pick one van over the other but from a neutral standpoint, we would recommend the Chevrolet Express as it is cheaper.

2022 Chevrolet Express 3500 Passenger Van Diesel vs. 2022 Ford Transit Cargo Van

The Ford Transit is a van that has been constantly updated and re-engineered to stay relevant to the times. However, the lack of a diesel option does make it less competitive in the segment. One cannot however ignore how value for money the van is because it is offered at a much lower price and this would never be offset by fuel prices. It is also offered with a lot of features and a higher roof option so we would pick it over the Chevrolet.

2022 Chevrolet Express 3500 Passenger Van Diesel Vs. 2022 Mercedes Benz Sprinter Cargo Van Diesel

The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is the van you should have if you want to transport your passengers in comfort. It is much larger and also more expensive but not by much. It also offers the best fuel efficiency figures but this is pretty much down on performance. It has also a very big emphasis on safety and is much better engineered. The interiors are also far better and the van looks much more presentable, making it better suited for all applications.

Final Verdict

The new Chevrolet Express 3500 Passenger Van Diesel is an attractive prospect if you’re out for a very basic van with a lot of payloads and towing capacity. It provides very robust powertrains, excellent towing, and payload capacities while suffering in terms of features, interior quality, and everything else in between. One of the only other advantages is that it offers a very reliable diesel engine. However since we are expecting a newer version of the van to come out soon and since we feel that the current model is very much outdated, we would not recommend you to buy the Chevrolet Express for the 2022 model year.
