Just like everything else in the market, full-sized vans are also getting a touch of sophistication and modern tech. The Chevrolet Express, on the other hand, is one of the very few ones still sticking to its roots and favors utility and practicality over being attractive and full of features. With it, you get an old-school van that offers adequate room for occupants and cargo, solid build quality, and three engine configurations to choose from.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The Chevrolet Express has been quite a popular choice for fleets as well as for individual buyers, making it stand tall against rivals such as Ford Transit, GMC Savana, and Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. All the vans have been updated quite a bit and have a lot of modernity to them, making the challenge rather tough for the Express. Let’s see how the Chevy takes up the challenge.

2022 Chevrolet Express 3500 Passenger Van Features

As usual, the 2022 Chevrolet Express 3500 Passenger Van is available in two trim levels i.e. LS and LT ranging from $40,000 to $42,000. There are three engine configurations, both trims offer a decent list of features making them different from each other. The base LS 3500 trim comes with 16-inch steel wheels, a rearview camera, front and rear air conditioning, adaptive cruise control, OnStar services, Cloth trim seats, and a tilt steering wheel.

The LT upgrades over it by having leather seats for a better level of comfort, full-floor carpeting, front and rear chrome bumpers, and safety features such as a forward collision warning and lane departure warning system. Few features are offered under packages so the base trim buyers can have those by paying extra.

Which trim should you buy?

Although both trims come with a decent set of features, we would suggest going for the LS trim with an expected price tag of $40,000. It offers value for money as the list of features is decent plus you can always add more features if you desire from the list of optional extras.

2022 Chevrolet Express 3500 Passenger Van Release date

There is no official date available for the release of the 2022 Chevrolet Express 3500 Passenger Van yet, nor has the manufacturer made any statements regarding the same.

2022 Chevrolet Express 3500 Passenger Van Engine and Performance

The 2022 Chevrolet Express 3500 Passenger Van is available in three engine configurations. But as standard, you get a 4.3 Litre V6 gas engine which produces 276 horsepower and a torque of 298 lb-ft. The engine is mated with an eight-speed automatic transmission which works smoothly as intended. The power is sent to the rear wheels which seems like an appropriate choice for hauling the load.

As for the V6 engine, it sounds decent on paper but takes some time to pick up the pace, it can move the Express from 0-60 mph in 7.9 seconds and can finish a quarter-mile in 16.3 seconds. As we said, these timings are not impressive but once you get past that, Express offers an impressive cruising experience. Two additional engine configurations are available: a four-cylinder turbo diesel engine and a more powerful 6.6 Litre V8 which produces 401 horsepower.

The Express is a 12 seater passenger van that is heavy and cumbersome. So one will have to stay patient while passing through tight spots. The steering wheel feels responsive but lacks any feedback. There is quite a bit of body roll and you feel that during corners. Moreover, the suspension system Express comes with is very basic, you get independent suspension at the front and leaf springs at the rear. So do not expect it to eliminate medium to large bumps so easily. However, load it fully and you might get a smoother experience when driven mannerly.

Despite being slower on the road, the V6 engine of Express surpasses the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and shares the same stats with its sibling GMC Savana. However, Express does fall behind Ford Transit which is simply much faster on the road. In terms of acceleration, Ford’s Transit and Mercedes’ Sprinter take 6.8 and 11.2 seconds to the 60mph mark, assuming positions at the opposite ends of the table. Each passenger van comes channeled as an RWD variant mated to an automatic transmission unit with a V6 engine, except for the Sprinter that is equipped with a turbocharged straight-four engine.

2022 Chevrolet Express 3500 Passenger Van Fuel Economy

The V6 engine the Express comes with might be slower on the road, but it sure is efficient. As it offers a combined mileage of 14 MPG which might not be class-leading but sure is very good. But what makes everything better is the gigantic 31 gallons fuel tank. Combine these and you get a driving range of 434 miles which is impressive.

So that makes it one of the best vans in the market which can be used long hauling without worrying much about the fuel. The four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine offers even better mileage which should be around 20 MPG, but do not expect much from the powerful V8 engine as the numbers are going to be lower than the V6 engine.

From the above table, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter takes the lead by offering the best mileage of 22 MPG and driving range, followed by both Chevy Express and GMC Savana. The Ford Transit sure offers good mileage but a limited fuel tank capacity of 25-gallons, affects the driving range, limiting the city and highway range to 350 and 450 miles, respectively.

2022 Chevrolet Express 3500 Passenger Van Interior

Step inside the cabin and you will understand why the 2022 Chevrolet Express 3500 Passenger Van looks outdated. Chevy clearly focussed more on being practical than attractive. You get an interior design that is mostly bland and the material quality is average. The dashboard is just a simple slab with everything attached to it which makes you feel like Chevy didn’t even try to make it look nicer. Outward visibility is pretty good but the same cannot be said about the rear.

As for the occupants, manually adjustable front seats are available which can be replaced by power-adjustable ones. For the rest of the rows, 50/50 split-folding seats are available, and yes all seats come with decent quality cloth and offer ample room for maximum-sized occupants. However, leatherette seats are far superior. Unfortunately Express doesn't come with a high roof which might be problematic for some. Thinking about going on a long road trip with your family? Well, Express got you covered with its 218.5 cubic feet of cargo capacity which is good but not impressive for its class. The cabin however offers very limited storage areas for small items.

Compared to its rivals, Chevy Express offers a spacious cabin in its class which is shared by GMC Savana. Each passenger van gets a standard seating capacity of 12 passengers and while space feels adequate, the Ford Transit does take an obvious lead in the segment. As for the cargo capacity, both Transit and Sprinter offer bigger trunk volumes than Express of 256.4 and 261 cu.-ft, respectively. Below are some of the key interior features:

  • Power adjustable front bucket seats
  • Leatherette seats
  • Full floor carpeting
  • 8 point digital compass
  • Remote keyless entry

What’s there to keep you entertained in the 2022 Chevrolet Express 3500 Passenger Van?

Just like its cabin design, the infotainment system of Chevrolet Express is unimpressive as you get one 6.5-inch LCD screen at the front which can be controllable via physical buttons. The display is responsive but the interface feels ancient and probably going to annoy most buyers. Features such as auxiliary input jack, 4G LTE WiFi hotspot, OnStar services, and FM radio are available. Bluetooth connectivity and SiriusXM are also available but via a communication package.

The audio system with two speakers at the front used to be decent but somehow even that is gone now. As Chevrolet decided to scrap the audio system for 2022 Express. For now, there is no official news about which system will replace it but we expect it to have something far superior which will make the inside of the Express more interesting than ever before. Below are some of its key infotainment features:

  • 6.5 inch LCD touchscreen
  • SiriusXM
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • OnStar services
  • 4G LTE WiFi hotspot

2022 Chevrolet Express 3500 Passenger Van Exterior

Unlike other vans in the market, Chevrolet Express is still clinging to its past as the exterior design is still the same as when it first debuted in the 90s. So you get a very basic design that has nothing impressive about it. At the front, you get simple dual halogen composite headlights with turn indicators of the same size below. In the middle, you will find a big grille divided in two by a chrome bar with the chevy logo on it.

Go to the sides and you will again find a very simple design with manual-folding black side mirrors, 16-inch steel wheels, and solar ray deep-tinted glass. At the rear, the sharp vertical taillights are placed higher than usual which should be helpful to the traffic in the rear. The LS trim can be had with blacked-out specific parts but the LT trim is available with chrome instead.

When stacked against the others, Chevy Express is very similarly heavy to the GMC but the others have a far lower curb weight, making them better handlers as well as more maneuverable in the city. But the 9.7 inches of ground clearance it comes with is very good for rougher roads. Below are some of its key exterior features:

  • 16-inch steel wheels
  • Front and rear chrome bumpers
  • Dual halogen composite headlamps
  • Solar ray deep-tinted glass

2022 Chevrolet Express 3500 Passenger Van Safety

Despite being a heavy and old school on the road, Chevrolet loaded Express with a decent level of safety features and assists. Inside you will find StabiliTrak (traction assistance and stability system), Hill-start assist, daytime running lights, multiple airbags at key points for maximum survivability of the occupants, airbag deactivation switch, adaptive cruise control, OnStar services, and tire pressure monitoring system. A rearview camera is also available for easy parking.

These features are available as standard in LS trim. Going for LT gets you additional features such as a forward-collision warning system, blind-spot monitoring system, and lane departure warning system. The 2022 Chevrolet Express 3500 Passenger Van hasn’t been crash-tested by the NHTSA and IIHS yet but these features work properly as intended. So we think express should be safe enough if driven sanely. Below are some of its key safety features:

  • Blind-spot monitoring system
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Forward collision warning system
  • Lane departure warning system
  • Rearview camera

2022 Chevrolet Express 3500 Passenger Van Competition

2022 Chevrolet Express 3500 Passenger Van vs 2021 Ford Transit 350 Passenger Van

When compared to Ford Transit, Chevrolet Express feels like a disappointment as it only manages to offer a better driving range and a cheaper price tag. The Ford Transit on the other hand takes the lead here by exceeding in almost everything. It is much faster on the road, offers a spacious and attractive cabin, excellent cargo capacity, better fuel economy, and better braking performance.

2022 Chevrolet Express 3500 Passenger Van vs 2021 GMC Savana 3500 Passenger Van

Just put Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana side by side and anyone will understand that both are clones. As both share the same architecture, features, and everything. Even the overall design looks the same both from the inside and outside and yes they are mechanically the same. The only difference one can find between the two is the difference in price tag and different badges.

2022 Chevrolet Express 3500 Passenger Van vs 2021 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Passenger Van

When stacked against the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, the Chevrolet Express feels a lot more ancient than it already is. After all the design and technology it comes with is nothing in front of Merc Sprinter. The Express offers a spacious cabin, and an engine that is faster on the road and equally efficient. The Sprinter on the other hand exceeds everything else.

2022 Chevrolet Express 3500 Passenger Van Final Verdict

Despite being so old school, the Chevrolet Express comes with qualities that keep it in the game. Such as multiple engine configurations, a spacious cabin with a decent level of comfort, excellent driving range, and an affordable price tag. Not to forget the decent set of safety features. However, it looks boring both from the inside and outside and the infotainment system is mediocre. So if you are tight on a budget only then you should consider going for the 2022 Chevrolet Express 3500 Passenger Van.
