Expert Review

CARHP Editorial October 26, 2018

The Chevrolet Express Passenger is the car that has been symbolizing the passenger van since its launch in 1996. The Chevrolet is second only to Ford in this market which is seeing an increased influx of competition with companies like Nissan and Mercedes entering. The 2018 Chevrolet Express Passenger is an attempt to hold the position in the market banking on trust and some new improvements.

The car is priced between $34,710 for the LS 2500 and $37,005 for the LT 3500 and comes in four trim models. The car has a 4.3L l6 engine powering it with 276 hp at 5200 rpm.

Features

The 2108 Chevrolet Express Passenger comes in four trim options starting with the stock LS 2500 and going to the loaded LT 3500. The LS 2500 and LS 3500 come without rear air conditioning and the plusher models the LT 2500 and 3500 include rear air conditioning.

We Recommend

The Express Passenger LT 2500 is the best pick amongst the trims. It brings in the plushness and added features of the LT class but still does not hurt the pocket. The rear air conditioning is the most value-added feature of the car and the additional power due to 3500 is not really required for a family car.

Engine

Spending time behind the wheel of a 2018 Chevrolet Express van conjures up a nostalgic feeling reminiscent of driving an older pickup truck. The ride can be bouncy at times, although it settles down when the road does the same - Kelly blue book

Engine and Transmission

The Express Passenger Van comes with a fresh upgrade to the engine with the V8, this makes the engine capable enough to attain full speed even at full load. The engine is a 4.3 L I6 and delivers a power of 276 hp at 5200 rpm and 298 lb-ft torque.

The car is undisputedly the leader in the segment when it comes to engine and power. It has the largest engine at 4.6 L which is considerably big when compared to the other cars in the segment. The Chevrolet tops the engine sector when it comes to capacity, power, and torque.

Acceleration

The focus of the Chevy van, along with other cars in its segment is not majorly on acceleration. The buyer is not very interested in how fast the car goes from 0-60 MPH rather the focus is more on utility and comfort.

As is the case with vans, performance is not the main priority. So much so that the figures are unavailable. The engine is either 4-liter or 4.3-liter in capacity, very generous for a people carrier.

Braking

The Chevrolet has not made leaps when it comes to their braking system which was sturdy and secure in the first place. The brakes are exactly how you want them to be in a family car that weighs a lot. The brakes are not what you would have in a sports car, they are meant to handle the road and provide precise braking.

Interior

The 2018 Chevy Express is a vehicle for serious work, and the interior reflects that - Kelly Blue Book

Seating and Comfort

Most vehicles in this class max out at 12 seats, but the Express (along with its GMC Savana twin and the Ford Transit) offers seating for up to 15 people. A high roof is not on the options list, so passengers will have to duck as they enter and exit. The interiors are comfortable for a long drive and the LT models come with rear air conditioning.

The Transit van has a lower seating capacity of only 8 people. Of course, "only" is a relative term. The rest of the cars here have a seating capacity of 12, and that too with plenty of space around.

Cargo Capacity

The Chevrolet includes a lot of cargo space and customizable seats because of foldable seat rows. The car offers 92.1 cubic feet with the fourth row folded and 216.2 cubic feet with the second row folded.

For hauling stuff around, it's best you buy the Cargo variant. As for the passenger variant, you'd have to fold the seats down in order to get usable space. This doesn't apply for the Ford though, as the lack of fourth-row seating helps it liberate boot space.

Exterior

Though it has undergone minor interior and exterior refreshes over the years, today's Express is essentially the same as the one that launched way back in 1996 - Edmunds

Weights and Dimensions

The car stands at the average of the segment and weighs 5983 lbs. The car is 224.1 inches long 79.2 inches wide and 83.9 inches high. The car has a best in class ground clearance of 11/7.1 inches and a wheelbase of 135.0 inches.
