In 2014, Chevrolet improved the Malibu midsize sedan's suspension for better ride and reshaped the car. The Chevrolet Malibu remains the same car for 2015 with some minor changes to it. The engine options also remain the same as the previous year’s model where it gets the power from 2.5L naturally aspirated I-4 as standard. You also have an option for a more powerful 2-liter turbo engine for extra power.

The 2015 model year brings new wireless technologies like 4G OnStar along with new external shades which make Malibu a better-looking and better-connected car. However, Malibu faces stiff competition from the likes of Mazda 6, Toyota Camry, and Ford Fusion.

2015 Chevrolet Malibu Features

9.5/10

The 2015 Chevrolet Malibu is offered in LS, LT, and LTZ models. The base LS offers little beyond standard features. LT is interesting as it features most of the tech features Malibu has to offer. The LT is divided into three sub-trims: 1LT, 2LT, and 3LT. 1LT adds heated mirrors, cloth, and leatherette upholstery, MyLink infotainment system with 7-inch touchscreen, voice controls, and satellite radio. 2LT adds dual-zone automatic climate control, an 8-way power driver seat with power lumbar support, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

3LT adds a turbo 4-pot motor to the 2LT. The LTZ has two sub-trims- 1LZ and 2 LZ. It offers leather upholstery, sunroof, heated front seats, 8-way power passenger seat and is the only trim to offer active safety features such as forward collision alert and blind-spot monitoring. All trims come with OnStar 4G LTE, a 6 Speaker sound system, and remote keyless entry.

We Recommend

With 3 trims to choose from selecting the right trim comes down to personal choices. LS offers all the standard features, LT offers all technology features, LTZ comes with advanced safety features. We recommend buying the LT trim as it is better placed among the 3. The LT is more feature-rich than the LS and in comparison, LTZ has only a few advanced safety features, which is justified by the price difference of nearly $3000.

2015 Chevrolet Malibu Engine and Performance

9.0/10

The 2015 Chevrolet Malibu offers 2 engine choices to choose from. The LS and LT trim come with a 2.5L ECOTEC engine with intelligent start/stop technology while the LTZ trim features a 2.0L turbocharged inline-4 engine. The 2.5L I4 engine on the LS and LT models is one of the most appealing base options in the segment. This engine is capable of producing up to 196hp power and 186 lb.-ft. of torque.

The engine provides plenty of juice while accelerating from a standstill or casually cruising on the highway. Still, the 2.0L turbo on the LTZ variant is a desirable and significant upgrade. This engine churns out 259 hp and 295 lb.-ft. Torque. The revised engine calibration makes the 2.0L turbo Malibu’s torque the best in the segment even rivaling the six-cylinder competitors. This produces a stronger feeling of acceleration and a greater feeling of power on demand in almost all driving conditions.

Despite the engine config, all trims come equipped with a 6-speed automatic transmission and FWD drivetrain. The base engine covers a quarter-mile in 14.9 secs reaching a top speed of 133 mph. The 2.0L turbo 4-pot motor combined with 6-speed automatic transmission takes care of all the daily needs while satisfying the occasional urge for power.

Compared to the competition the 2.0L Malibu fares decently with the competition. All cars come equipped with a 6-speed automatic transmission and 2.5L I4 engine in their base avatar. However, the Malibu churns out the most powerful thanks to the ECOTEC technology. The Ford Fusion offers the least power and is the slowest of the lot covering 0-60 mph in 8.8 seconds.

2015 Chevrolet Malibu Fuel Economy

9.0/10

With the 2.5L i4 engine, the 2015 Malibu returns an estimated 36 mpg on the highways, while providing 25 mpg in city traffic. This figure stands high among the competition. Malibu has a 15.8-gallon fuel tank ensuring sufficient fuel reserves for long drives. The 2.0L Turbo 4-pot motor returns 24 mpg combined with 21 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. The vehicle is also equipped with intelligent Start/Stop technology which further increases fuel efficiency.

As we can see the Mazda 6 has the highest fuel efficiency among the competition closely followed by the Malibu with only 1 mpg and 2 mpg differences in city and highway respectively. The Ford Fusion is the least fuel-efficient car among the bunch. The Mazda 6 also offers an impressive driving range crossing over 600 miles on the highway on a full tank.

2015 Chevrolet Malibu Interior

8.0/10

Coming to the inside of the Malibu we are greeted with a stylish cabin made of premium materials. The half leather and half cloth interior on the base trim gives a pleasantly premium feel while a more luxurious full leather variant is available as optional. On the dashboard, we have a leather-wrapped tilting and telescopic steering wheel with a pretty good range of adjustments. There are multiple curves on the dashboard which light up at night to give a more premium feel to the Malibu.

Coming to the seats, 2015 Malibu can seat 5 people in two rows. The seats are not too hard or too soft, they are comfortable for all everyday needs. The top of the line LTZ trim adds leather seating, heated front seats, an 8-way power driver and passenger seat, a sunroof, and a cargo net for the trunk. Being one of the smallest cars in the segment comes with certain liabilities which are more visible at the rear. The rear seats are small and cramped, even though the height has improved they remain below average. The Malibu has a cargo capacity of 16.3 cubic ft.

With five seating capacities standard for mid-size sedans, Chevrolet Malibu stacks up pretty good in terms of internal dimensions being next only to Ford Fusion. Malibu has the largest cargo capacity among the competition at 16.3 cu ft closely followed by the Fusion at 16 cu ft. The Mazda 6 offers a balanced front and rear row with plenty of legroom but the headroom is limited. Standout interior features:

  • Steering wheel-mounted controls
  • Heated seats
  • 8-way power-adjustable driver seat with power lumbar support
  • Leather upholstery
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control

How intuitive is the 2015 Chevrolet Malibu’s infotainment unit?

The infotainment system in Malibu provides the customer with the best of both worlds. It provides easy operation of basic functions yet it is highly customizable and capable. This unit provides more ways for the user to stay connected. Malibu comes equipped with a 7 – inch color touch screen with Chevrolet MyLink. Complementing the MyLink to enhance Malibu’s connectivity is the new OnStar with 4G LTE with a built-in Wi-fi hotspot. This unit is supplemented by a 6-speaker sound system which works perfectly. Standout infotainment features:

  • Chevrolet MyLink Infotainment
  • 7-inch diagonal color touch-screen display
  • 6-speaker sound system
  • SiriusXM Satellite Radio All Access Package with a 3-month trial subscription
  • OnStar 4G LTE and built-in Wi-Fi hotspot

2015 Chevrolet Malibu Exterior

7.0/10

The 2015 Malibu carries over the updated styling introduced in the previous model with not many changes. The vehicle features a design trend based on the Camaro with square taillights and a wide dual-port grille with chrome and headlamps that sweep into the front fenders. The 2015 Malibu also introduces 4 new exterior colors. The wheel designs are conservative giving you the options to choose from 16-inch to 19-inch options with 5 spoke alloy except for the 17 inch which has 10 spokes.

The front fascia comes with a signature grille and holds a halogen projector headlight with halogen fog lamps. However, even as the build quality was stepped up in previous years it remains almost average in comparison to the competition. The Malibu has a wheelbase of 107.8 inches which is the smallest in comparison.

In comparison to the competition, the Malibu remains at par in external dimensions also having the highest ground clearance among the competition. It remains one of the heaviest cars in competition with 3393 pounds weight second only to the Ford Fusion 3431 lbs. Standout exterior features:

  • Xenon headlights
  • 18" alloy wheels
  • All-season tires
  • Sunroof
  • Rear spoiler

2015 Chevrolet Malibu Safety

7.0/10

The Chevrolet Malibu received the highest possible overall vehicle score of 5 stars from NHTSA. But this feat is undercutting all the safety features offered in the car. Available features like blind zone alert and rear cross-traffic alert complement the forward collision alert and the lane departure features to enhance Malibu's crash avoidance capabilities.

Additional contributions to Malibu's safety include 10 standard airbags, two optional airbags, and a rear vision camera. Malibu employs greater vehicle control through StabiliTrak electronic stability, all-speed traction control, and four-wheel disc brake with four-channel ABS. The standard OnStar feature uses GPS and cellular technology to automatically call for help in case of a crash. Standout safety features:

  • Tire Pressure monitor
  • Forward collision warning
  • Lane-departure warning
  • Blind-spot monitor
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Theft-deterrent system with content theft alarm

2015 Chevrolet Malibu Final Verdict

The Chevrolet Malibu offers a comfortable ride in its class. It is one of the better-looking sedans in the mid-size category both inside and out. Apart from the looks and drive the Malibu stands at the top among the mid-size sedans in terms of safety and reliability ratings. The additional safety features available in Malibu make it stand out among its counterparts. Also, the presence of a large and spacious trunk with a good infotainment system makes it a solid choice.
