The 2017 Chevrolet Malibu remains unchanged as compared to the redesigned 2016 model. With a starting price of $21,680, Chevrolet’s Malibu is the answer for buyers looking for a no-nonsense midsize sedan. For the 2017 model year, Chevrolet continues to offer the Hybrid trim for efficiency-conscious buyers. So, the Malibu is available in L, LS, LT, Hybrid and Premier trims. A new Sport Package is added for the mid-level LT trim, adding leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, rear spoiler and a set of 18-inch wheels. The 1.5-liter and 2.0-liter turbo engines offer 163 hp and 250 hp respectively, while the new Hybrid trim with 1.8-liter engine and dual electric motors offer 182 hp.

2017 Chevrolet Malibu For Sale

The 2017 Chevy Malibu ticks many right boxes when it comes to being a complete family sedan. The decent fuel economy, inside space and practicality. The newly added hybrid trim offers superior combined fuel economy of 46 mpg in combined driving conditions. If you are looking for a used 2017 Malibu then you can find one in the range of $10,000-$17,000. However, the final price will depend on multiple factors like the number of owners, condition, history, and odometer mileage. A used Malibu will save you a lot of money and could be a smart option in times of rising fuel costs.

2017 Chevrolet Malibu Buying Advice

The 2017 Chevrolet Malibu offers a hybrid trim as well for superior fuel economy. However, the pricing is higher than the LT trim but lower than the Premier trim. Some basic safety features like airbags, ABS, TPMS and Teen driver Technology are standard. Some of the advanced driver-assistance features are offered with optional packages only. The 2017 model year has been recalled four times and about 520 complaints have been registered with the NHTSA. So, we would suggest going for the 2019 and above model years for better reliability. The 2022 Malibu has not been recalled and only one complaint has been registered under its name.

2017 Chevy Malibu

The 2017 Chevy Malibu is the shining midsize sedan, competing besides its all-time rival, the Ford Fusion. The Japanese sedans including the likes of Honda Accord and Toyota Camry are also in the race to become the big shots in the segment. The Chevy Malibu offers three different powertrains, a 1.5 turbo, 2.0 turbo and 1.8 liter engines (with dual electric motors). The hybrid and non-hybrid trims are competitive enough with their features, while lacking multiple ADAS features as standard. The hybrid trim is covered separately. So, let’s focus on the standard Malibu in our review and see how it fares against the competition.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The 2017 Chevrolet Malibu is a solid mid-sizer in the segment, punctuated by good, efficient powertrains, and a quiet ride- The Car Connection

The 2017 Chevrolet Malibu is not a segment leader in any sense but it offers many desirable features at an affordable price. Plus, the reach of Chevrolet is across the United States, allowing for a better sales and service experience. The 2017 Malibu has scored an overall 79 out of 100 which can be termed as “Average”. The driving experience and dealership experience score 82 out of 100 and 83 out of 100 which can be termed as “Great”. However, owing to a lower quality and reliability score of 77 out of 100 and resale score of 76 out of 100, deteriorates the final score.

2017 Chevrolet Malibu Review

Considering the cost of ownership over a period of five years, the Malibu can be considered as slightly more expensive than its rivals to own. The “Cost-to-Own” can be broadly divided into depreciation, fuel costs, insurance cost, maintenance cost and repair cost. The estimated depreciation for the Malibu L 4d sedan is around $7,908. The fuel, maintenance and repair charges are estimated to be $10,009, $6,986, $6,229 and $2,813 respectively. Owing to few issues with the 2017 Malibu, the repair charges are on the higher side.

Buying Advice

The mid-level LT trim can be considered as the best bet in terms of pricing to features ratio. The LT trim offers all the features of the L and LS trims, adding 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, SiriusXM satellite radio, outside heated and body-colored mirrors, larger 17-inch aluminum wheels, LED daytime running lamps, ambient lighting and driver window with express up/down. With the LT trim, buyers can also opt for multiple packages like Convenience and Technology Package, Driver Confidence Packages, Leather Package, Sun and Wheel Package and the newly introduced Sport Package.

"A high predicted reliability rating, a roomy cabin, and one of the best infotainment systems in the class help make the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu one of the top players in our midsize car rankings." - Cars.USnews

The 2017 Chevrolet Malibu is offered in five trim configurations: L, LS, LT, Hybrid and Premier. The above-mentioned trims start at an msrp of $21,680, $23,225, $25,125, $27,875 and $30,975 respectively. A destination fee of $875 is levied over the base msrp of all the trims. The 2017 Malibu has received a five-star safety rating from the NHTSA. However, most of the ADAS features are not standard and optional from LT trim onwards, meaning that the L and LS trims miss out on them.

2017 Chevrolet Malibu Features

The L trim is pretty basic and mostly for buyers who are not concerned with creature comforts but want a commuter sedan. Some features like 16-inch steel wheels, outsider power-adjustable mirrors, keyless open and start, cruise control, 6-speaker sound system, Bluetooth connectivity and single-zone climate control as standard. The LS trim adds 16-inch aluminum wheels, rear vision camera, 7-inch touchscreen display with support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and built-in 4G WiFi. Even the compass and outside temperature display are standard on the Malibu LS

The Malibu LT trim offers 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, SiriusXM satellite radio, outside heated and body-colored mirrors, larger 17-inch aluminum wheels, LED daytime running lamps, and ambient lighting. The Hybrid trim offers similar features as the LT trim, adding hybrid-specific instrument console and dual-zone climate control system. The Premier trim adds LED tail lamps, dual exhaust outlets, 18-inch aluminum wheels, remote vehicle starter system, 9-speaker Bose premium sound system, 8-inch touchscreen, heated and ventilated seats and wireless charging as well.

Engine and Performance

"The current Chevrolet Malibu is a bold step forward for this previously disappointing family sedan. Its long-distance comfort and capable performance are what you expect for the segment, while its sharp handling and available advanced hybrid powertrain are standout elements." -Edmunds

The 2016 Chevrolet Malibu can be equipped with two different powertrain options, depending on the trim configuration. The 1.5-liter 4-cylinder turbo engine powers the L, LS and LT trims, while the Premier trim is equipped with a bigger 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbo engine. The output figures from the smaller engine is 163 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. The bigger engine offers an output of 250 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. The 1.5-litre engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The 2.0-liter engine is mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission instead of an 8-speed transmission.

2017 Chevrolet Malibu Engine

The Malibu L, LS and LT trims can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 8.2 seconds and a quarter-mile run is completed in 16.4 seconds. The Premier trim is more athletic at least in terms of outright acceleration, sprinting 0-60 mph in 5.9 seconds and completing a quarter-mile run in 14.4 seconds. The overall performance from the base engine might be underwhelming for enthusiasts. So, they can go for the Premier trim. The overall ride quality is good and passengers won’t feel most of the road undulations.

2017 Chevrolet Malibu 0 to 60

The Malibu shines in the handling department. Around city corners, highway ramps, and twisty corners, every driver would be amazed with maneuverability and control. At speed on a freeway, the Malibu feels solidly planted, inspiring confidence. Surely, Chevrolet has used a well-sorted electrical steering system in the Malibu. However, a bit more eagerness in the steering would be appreciated. The ride quality with the optional 19-inch wheels on the Premier trim is also quite acceptable.

The Toyota Camry offers the best 0-60 mph time, followed by Honda Accord, Chevrolet Malibu and Ford Fusion. The Ford Fusion accelerates slower, courtesy of its higher curb weight. The quarter-mile times of every sedan is pretty similar and FWD is standard. The Toyota Camry and Honda Accord offer simiar output figures and their performance is almost the same. The Malibu L 4d sedan offers a lower curb weight of just 3,086 pounds, allowing for stopping distance of just 113 feet as compared to its rivals. the Toyota Camry offers a stopping distance of 129 feet, Honda Accord stops within 135 feet and Ford Fusion stops within 122 feet.

Fuel Economy

"The standard 2017 Chevy Malibu gets some of the highest fuel economy ratings in the class: 27 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway." - Cars.USnews

With the base 1.5-liter turbo engine, the 2018 Malibu offers an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 27/36/30 mpg in city/highway/combined driving conditions. The Premier trim with its bigger 2.0-liter turbo engine is EPA-estimated to deliver 22/32/26 mpg in city/highway/combined driving conditions. The start-stop feature offered with the 1.5-liter engine helps in enhancing gas mileage. A combined range of 390 miles is delivered owing to its 13.0-gallon fuel tank while the Premier model with a 2.0-liter engine and 15.8-gallon tank offers a range of 411 miles only. Therefore, Malibu is one of the best choices for short trips on your weekend.

The Chevrolet Malibu and Honda Accord similar mpg ratings. However, owing to a larger gas tank size, the Honda Accord offers the best driving range. The Toyota Camry comes second in the comparison for its gas mileage. The Ford Fusion comes last, owing to higher fuel consumption and least driving range in every condition. The higher curb weight of Ford Fusion is one of the reasons behind its lower gas mileage. The lower weight of Chevrolet Malibu enables it to perform well with lower fuel consumption.

"The Malibu benefits from a pleasant, modern and uncluttered dashboard design and a simple layout of controls. Its space is on par with most in the segment, which means there's an abundance of it." -Edmunds

The 2017 Chevrolet Malibu was redesigned last year and it’s based on a new platform. Just like its previous platform, the Malibu still accommodates five passengers with relative ease. The quality of materials in the lower trims is not very decent. However, that should not pose a problem for most cost conscious buyers in the long run. The front seats are comfortable and nicely cushioned. The driver's seat is positioned properly with good outward visibility. The rear seats are supportive as well.

2017 Chevrolet Malibu Interior

The rear seat legroom is not the best in the segment but quite decent to be honest. The cloth upholstery is offered in Medium Ash Gray and Jet Black colors. The leather upholstery is offered in Medium Ash Gray, Jet Black and Loft Brown colors. The perforated leather upholstery in the Premier trim is offered in Medium Ash Gray, Jet Black and Loft Brown colors as well. The Medium Ash Gray and Loft Brown upholstery can be paired with Dark Atmosphere Accents as well for a contrasting appearance. The trunk space is limited to 15.8 cubic feet but can be extended by folding the rear seats.

2017 Chevrolet Malibu Seating

The base L and LS trims are quite dry when it comes to creature comforts. Some features like steering mounted controls, tilt and telescopic steering wheel, driver information center, and acoustic laminated windshield are standard. The LT trim adds interior lights in the form of ambient lighting on the instrument panel, front door pads and map pockets, power-adjustable driver’s seat with power lumbar control, and illuminated vanity mirrors. The Premier trim offers dual-zone climate control system, color driver information center, 6-way power-adjustable front passenger’ seat and leather upholstery.

Every sedan in the comparison can accomdate up to five passengers. The Toyota Camry offers the best second row legroom, followed by Ford Fusion, Honda Accord, and Chevrolet Malibu. However, the difference is not very significant. The best cargo space is offered by Ford Fusion, while Honda Accord and Chevy Malibu offers same trunk capacity. The Toyota Camry offers slighty less boot space. So, there is not really much difference with respect to interior dimensions amon these sedans.

2017 Chevy Malibu Infotainment System

From the LS trim onwards, a 7.0-inch touchscreen display with Chevrolet MyLink Radio, AM/FM stereo, Bluetooth connectivity, Apple Carplay and Android Auto. A larger 8-inch screen is optional in the LT trim and standard in the Premier trim. The Premier trim also supports navigation, while the same is optional on the LT trim. A standard 6-speaker sound system is good but the sound quality from the 9-speaker Bose premium audio system in the Premier trim is really great. The interface is simple to understand and incorporates minimalism without ruining the user experience.

Some of the standout interior and infotainment features of the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu are:

  • Heated and ventilated front seats
  • Power-adjustable driver and front passenger seats
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Dual-zone climate control system
  • 7.0-inch/8.0-inch touchscreen
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • Apple CarPlay
  • Android Auto

"Chevrolet has managed a difficult task with its family of sedans, somehow imparting a family resemblance on the Malibu that's immediately shared with the larger Impala and smaller Cruze, but without making small, medium and large versions of the same car" -Kelley Blue Book

The 2017 Chevy Malibu was refreshed last year and it features sleek design. The exterior dimensions of the Malibu are inspired from Impala. As compared to its previous generation the Malibu 2017 is longer, lower and lighter. Upfront, the headlights are halogen throughout the range but LED DRLs and taillights are standard from the LT trim onwards. The Malibu has the lowest ground clearance in this segment but that benefits in smooth and effective handling. A lower curb weight helps with enhanced maneuverability in urban conditions.

2017 Chevrolet Malibu Exterior

The exterior colors on offer are Summit White, Pearl Tricoat, Silver Ice Metallic, Pepperdust Metallic, Gray Metallic, Cajun Red, Blue Metallic, Velvet Metallic and Black Metallic. The Malibu runs on wheels with sizes ranging from 16-inch to 19-inch. The L and LS get 16-inch wheels, while the LT trim runs on 17-inch wheels. The top-end Premier trim runs on 18-inch wheels. The 19-inch wheels are optional with the Premier trim. With a wheelbase of 111.4 inches, the Malibu is almost on par with most of its rivals. Around the back, the sloping roofline adds a good taste to it.

2017 Chevrolet Malibu (Rear View)

The LT trim is offered with multiple packages for enhancing exterior appearance. The newly introduced Sport Package adds rear spoiler and 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels. The Sun and Wheel Package adds 18-inch aluminum wheels and power sunroof. Similarly, the Premier trim is also offered with the Premier Sun and Wheel Package, adding power sunroof and 19-inch aluminum alloy wheels.

The Honda Accord is slightly heavier than the Toyota Camry. The length of the Malibu deems it to be the longest, while also being the widest. Further, it has a fine longer wheelbase as well. However, the ground clearance could have been better

"The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu the highest rating of Good in five crash tests and the second-lowest rating of Marginal in the passenger-side crash test." - Cars.USnews

The 2017 Chevrolet Malibu goes under the scrutiny of safety rating agencies such as NHTSA and the IIHS. The NHTSA has given it an overall rating of 5 stars, even in the individual aspects other than the rollover test where it scores 4 out of 5 stars. With regard to the safety offering, the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu offers just about the basics like 10 airbags, ABS, teen driver technology and tire pressure monitoring system.

2017 Chevy Malibu Crash Test (IIHS)

The Driver Confidence Package and Driver Confidence Package II offers several driver-assistance features like low speed automatic braking, front pedestrian braking, high beam assist, side blindzone alert, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, semi-automatic parking assist and electronic parking brake. Though optional, the ADAS features are highly recommended for enhanced safety.

Some of the key safety features of the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu are:

  • Traction Control
  • Duralife brake rotors with corrosion-resistant technology
  • Teen Driver technology
  • LATCH system (Lower Anchors and Top tethers for Children), for child safety seats
  • Trunk latch, safety, manual release
  • StabiliTrak, stability control system with brake assist

2017 Chevrolet Malibu vs 2017 Ford Fusion

In competition against the Ford Fusion, we find that it is a little bit more powerful in terms of power output but the same is not reflected in its acceleration performance. Chevrolet Malibu offers better fuel economy and passenger room. On the other hand, the Ford Fusion offers better interior features and a cargo room that is larger by just 0.2 cubic feet.

2017 Ford Fusion

2017 Chevrolet Malibu vs 2017 Toyota Camry

Against the Toyota Camry, the Chevy Malibu proves to be an economical option. However, the 2.5-liter engine of the Camry delivers more power and this clearly translates in its acceleration performance. The interior and exterior offerings of both the cars in consideration are quite similar, this is with regard to the passenger room and cargo room. With unprecedented reliability, we would recommend the Camry over the 2017 Malibu.

2917 Toyota Camry

2017 Chevrolet Malibu vs 2017 Honda Accord

The Honda Accord offers better fuel economy and slighty better performance as well. The rear seat legroom is very similar as well. However, the Chevrolet Malibu offers better handling in spirited driving conditions. The lower curb weight and less ground clearance helps with better maneuverability. The Honda Accord offers better cargo space and has been recalled only once. About 296 complaints are registered in its name, making it a more reliable option than the Malibu.

2017 Honda Accord

Final Verdict

The 2017 Chevrolet Malibu is priced at an MSRP range of $21,680-$30,975 and is adequate for a family sedan. Its interior room for passengers and cargo perfectly suits its purpose. Further, it comes with the best fuel economy in class, just as anyone would want for a family hauler. However, the audience who considers the Chevrolet Malibu would also have vehicles such as the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Mazda 6, and the Ford Fusion in consideration as well. For its price, we would definitely recommend Malibu but the competition is tough and final choice will depend on the taste of buyers.
