There has been quite the competition in the affordable compact sedan category and as a daily driver, they offer great value and so does the Malibu, a Chevy mid-size sedan. Chevrolet has been quite consistent in offering the best value in the segment with quite a few cost-cutting measures. The 2019 Malibu remains unchanged visually with a few tweaks in the design, addition of new trims, a few interiors feature upgrades, etc. For the starting price of $22,090, the Malibu offers some decent specs which make it a true value for money.

The Malibu gets a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine as standard and a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine exclusively for the top-of-the-line trim, and also has a separate mild-hybrid option which outputs a peppy performance and a better fuel economy. Apart from that, the cabin is adequately spacious with decent cargo capacity, looks aggressive, and is built on a trusted platform. The 2019 Malibu competes with a few best-selling cars in the segment including the Honda Accord, Ford Fusion, and the Kia Optima.

2019 Chevrolet Malibu Features

The 2019 Chevrolet Malibu price starts at $22,090 and is offered in a total of 5 trims- L, LS, RS, LT, and Premier. As standard, the Malibu does not come with a handful of features and electronics and for that, you have to climb up the trim list. The RS trim is a new addition to the list and features 17-inch aluminum wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a lot more. All the trims get a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine except for the Premier trim which gets a bigger and more powerful 2.0-liter engine.

Which Trim should you buy?

As the base trims do not impress a lot of buyers, it is recommended to choose the new RS trim which is just a few grand more than the base trim but offers a bit more satisfying features to quench your techy thirst and offers a bit more opulence which is impressive for the price.

2019 Chevrolet Malibu Engine and Performance

6.9/10

The 2019 Chevrolet Malibu engine is a base 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-4 unit which puts out 160 horsepower and a maximum torque of 184 pound-feet kicking early in the rev band. There is another engine option specific for the Premier trim, a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 putting out a whopping 250 horses and 260 pound-feet of torque. Both the engines offer peppy performance and stay refined while putting the foot down on the throttle. Both the engines are front-wheel driven but the transmission system has been taken care of by a CVT with the standard engine and a 9-speed automatic for the bigger 2.0-liter engine.

All these power figures do transfer to a decent acceleration but not the class-leading ones. The Malibu does the 0-60 miles per hour acceleration in 8.5 seconds which is decent for the lower engine power in the competition. The standing quarter-mile timings are nearly similar to the competition with 16 seconds. The overall performance derived from the base engine is not bad and the punchy nature of the car does not make it feel laggy but the CVT does feel a bit lacking at times.

It is surprising to see the Honda Accord using a similar 1.5-liter engine which is also turbocharged like the Chevy and still manages to put out 192 horses and yields the best-in-class torque figures. The Ford Fusion and the Kia Optima share a similar engine capacity but the latter pumps out a bit more horsepower and torque. In terms of the acceleration, the Kia takes off first and that is quite unexpected since the engine is not a high performer and is followed by the Honda and the third place is shared by both the Chevy and Ford.

How well does the 2019 Chevrolet Malibu handle?

The Chevrolet Malibu handles like an ace for the segment it belongs to. The steering feels light but does not provide a proper feel and that is common for the segment. The suspensions offer good feedback while taking down corners but provide a lot of body rolls. Overall it absorbs quite the amount of bumps in the cities. Despite packing a turbocharged engine, the Malibu does take a few seconds to accelerate when getting on the gas and that is mainly because of the CVT.

Braking Performance

Chevrolet has equipped the 2019 Malibu with 11.8 inches of front disk rotors and 11.3 inches disk rotors for the rear. This ensures top-notch braking performance coupled with a lightweight body which ensures a braking distance of 113 feet in the 60-0 miles per hour test. The front is bigger and comes ventilated to dissipate heat contributing to better braking performance.

With a set of big rotors and the lowest curb weight, the Chevy does the shortest braking distance in the competition, followed by the Ford and Kia and the Honda which needs a little more tarmac to make a halt. The Kia Optima gets the biggest brakes but delivers a relatively poor braking performance.

2019 Chevrolet Malibu Fuel Economy

6.0/10

On par with a smaller 1.5-liter engine and a decent power output, the 2019 Malibu delivers a decent fuel economy and of course is better than most of the cars in the segment by returning 29 miles per gallon in the city, 36 miles per gallon on the highway and a combined fuel economy of 32 miles per gallon. The tank capacity on offer is 15.8 gallons and that contributes to a very good driving range. The bigger 2.0-liter engine offers a lot lesser fuel economy of 22 miles per gallon in the city and 32 miles per gallon on the highway and that is normal provided the beast of power output.

The Honda Accord offers a segment-leading fuel economy but packs a smaller fuel tank which overall affects the tank range. The Chevy offers the second-best fuel economy and also offers a good tank range leaving the Kia Optima and the Ford Fusion at the last with the latter being a gas guzzler and offers the least tank range and the prior offers a decent tank range with the segment-leading highway tank range.

2019 Chevrolet Malibu Interior

7.7/10

The 2019 Chevrolet Malibu interior is a lot more practical for your everyday drives and has a minimal design with a lot of features on offer if you choose the higher trims. As standard, the car gets plastic-filled interiors which are expected for the price point. The dashboard upfront has minimal designs with silver-painted rails across the infotainment screen and the air vents. The middle holds the infotainment screen and the left sports the instrument cluster and a leather-wrapped steering wheel exclusively for the higher trims.

The seats come cloth-wrapped but offer decent cushioning and leather is made available only on the higher trims which is acceptable for the segment. Both front and rear rows sports a good amount of head, shoulder, and leg space to accommodate up to 5 people that too with ease. The cabin offers extra storage spaces sprinkled throughout the cabin. In terms of practicality, the Malibu offers a boot space of 15.8 cubic feet which is decent given its compact form factor.

All four cars offer similarly-spaced, but Honda takes the crown again for providing a spacious and more practical cabin overall but the front row legroom is the least in the competition. It also packs a slightly bigger cabin space for added practicality. The Chevy, Ford, and Kia are not behind with the Optima offering the least rear row legroom and the Malibu offers slightly lower legroom for the front. The latter three cars provide almost similar boot space. Nevertheless, the Malibu packs some interesting interior features available with the higher trims.

Some of the optional and standard features are as follows:

  • Premium cloth seats in contrast to the cabin (Standard)
  • Keyless Ignition (Standard)
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel with heated functions
  • Leather seats with heated functions
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • 8-way adjustable driver seat with power lumbar support
  • Rearview camera (Standard)
  • Single-zone front air conditioning (Standard)

What’s there to keep you entertained?

The 2019 Chevrolet Malibu packs a decent infotainment system with loaded features that are definitely on par with the competition. An 8-inch touchscreen display sitting at the center comes as standard and is the only option throughout the trim list. The display offers decent visibility with crisp colors and coupled with Chevrolet Infotainment 3 Plus, the interaction becomes seamless. The user-friendly experience also gets Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity as standard. The base trim gets very limited features and misses out on WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity, Wireless Charging. Some of the key infotainment system features that come equipped throughout the trims are:

  • 8-inch touchscreen display
  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • WiFi connectivity
  • Chevrolet Infotainment 3 Plus
  • OnStar services
  • SiriusXM
  • 6-speaker audio system

2019 Chevrolet Malibu Exterior

6.0/10

The exterior of the 2019 Chevrolet Malibu sedan is a charmer in every angle and does attract a lot of attention with its front fascia supported by bright LED DRLs and halogen headlights which get replaced by all-LED treatments in the higher trims. The front sports a big intake grille giving the front a sportier appeal. The rear sports halogen taillights which come as standard and are replaced by LED lightings. The car sits on a set of 16-inch alloy wheels as standard and comes with all-weather tires.

In terms of vehicle dimensions, the Malibu has that “big car” feel at least on the outside with increased length, height, width, and wheelbase but surprisingly has the least curb weight of just 3,126 pounds. The ground clearance remains undisclosed but according to experts, the size is pretty decent and is ideal for city and highway drives.

All four cars share similar dimensions and are attractive in their ways and offer superb road presence. The Honda comes with more modern touches like LED treatments as standard. The Chevy is the longest car in the bunch with a bigger length and wheelbase and also the lightest. All three cars except the Kia shares the ground clearance dimension and 5.3 inches is not bad for city drives but can be a bit problematic for people living near countrysides.

A few exterior features of the 2019 Malibu are as follows:

  • Halogen headlights and taillights
  • 16-inch alloy wheels
  • Heated mirrors
  • Acoustic-laminated windshield (Optional)
  • Blacked-out intake grille (RS trim)

2019 Chevrolet Malibu Safety

6.0/10

The Malibu impresses big time with its safety features including the updated driver assistance suite. The build quality of the car is good and sitting on a sturdy chassis, the car elevates the overall safety. In terms of the safety ratings, the National Highway Traffic Safety has rated the 2019 Malibu with an overall 4-star rating, and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has scored ‘Good’ in almost every category. That being said the safety features that come standard includes:

  • 4-wheel ABS with traction control
  • 10-airbags including front and rear
  • StabiliTrak system
  • Tire pressure monitoring system
  • Emergency brake assist
  • Rear door child safety locks
  • Passenger airbag occupant sensing deactivation.
  • Post-collision safety system
  • Automatic headlamps

2019 Chevrolet Malibu Competition

8.5/10

2019 Chevrolet Malibu vs 2019 Honda Accord

Between the two cars, the Accord has always been successful in offering a segment-leading spec sheet and with the reliability coming from a renowned Japanese carmaker, the Accord is the best buy between the two. It better in performance, interior spaciousness, fuel economy and offers a more modern appeal than the Malibu, all packed with only a few hundred bucks more than the Chevy.

2019 Chevrolet Malibu vs 2019 Ford Fusion

Ford has made Fusion stand tall in the competition but it just fails to cope with the cars that offer great value. Starting with the performance, the older and bigger 2.4-liter engine has no charm and consumes a lot of fuel which the Chevy is ahead, with the overall looks, fit, and finish is better on the Chevy than the Ford. However, the Uconnect infotainment system is better than what Chevy offers.

2019 Chevrolet Malibu vs 2019 Kia Optima

Both the car has their specific ups and downs starting with the Optima, which packs a more powerful engine and offers best-in-class acceleration while the Malibu offers a far superior fuel economy. Both the cars offer a similar cabin experience with the former being slightly cramped at the rear because of lower legroom. At last, it comes to personal preference with these two.

2019 Chevrolet Malibu Final Verdict

The 2019 Chevrolet Malibu is a great car with an aggressive exterior design, punchy performance, good fuel economy, and a decent cabin spaciousness, all coming in for a base price that is lower than the competition. Although the base trim is sort of bare-bones, it offers an extreme value for money to those seeking a decent entry-level sedan. The higher trims with the 2.0-liter motor are recommended for those in need of a decent performance at an affordable price tag.
