The 2022 Chevrolet Malibu starts at an MSRP of $23,400 comes practically unchanged this year again. Minor changes include the discontinuation of the last year's base trim and addition electronic parking brake and two new exterior color options. With this, its exterior design looks good but the interior has started to show off its age. Available with two turbocharged engine options, the performance from its base 1.5-liter turbo-four motor is underwhelming. Although it offers commendable fuel efficiency of 36 MPG on highways as per official EPA ratings.

2022 Chevrolet Malibu

The 2022 Chevrolet Malibu is available in four trims only unlike five as the previous year model. The four trims are LS, RS, LT, and Premier. The price for the topmost Premier trim goes up to $33,500 excluding additional charges and it is the one that gets a more powerful 250-hp 2.0-liter turbo-four motor. That being said, even though a dying breed there is still a lot of competition from Japanese and Korean carmakers in the segment. Speaking of which the 2022 Malibu rivals the likes of Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, and Hyundai Sonata

“The 2022 Chevrolet Malibu is an acceptable choice, but it’s a shame that this may be how Detroit closes its long chapter on mid-size sedans.”- The Car Connection

The 2022 Chevrolet Malibu is a carryforward model with no major changes as compared to the 2021 model. It is a mid-size sedan offering seating for five passengers but adequate comfort is limited for up to four passengers. The base engine is tuned for fuel efficiency and feels underpowered when compared with more established rivals. One should opt for the bigger engine for better performance and expect a slight drop in fuel efficiency.

2022 2022 Chevrolet Malibu Features

The L trim has been dropped for 2022 and the interior has started to look dated with simple controls and information/multimedia displays. All the trims are available in FWD configuration only and most of the driver-assistance features are a part of optional packages. The rivals offer most of these features as standard. We are being told that an EV might replace the outgoing Malibu, which will retire after the 2023 model year. Expect the 2022 model to arrive in fall 2021

2022 Chevrolet Malibu Buying Advice

8.0/10

We would recommend the Premier trim if you are planning to buy it for a long term. The Premier trim is the only trim with a more powerful engine and a more potent drivetrain as well. It also gives you access to modern features like LED headlamps, 17-inch alloy wheels, power-adjustable and climate-controlled front seats, acoustic limited windshield, heated steering wheel, memory settings, panoramic sunroof, etc. However, you’ll need to opt for the Enhanced Driver Confidence Package for adding advanced and active safety features.

2022 Chevrolet Malibu Features

8.0/10

The 2022 Chevy Malibu midsize sedan is available in four trim levels: LS, RS, LT, and Premier. Powering the Malibu trims is a turbocharged 160 hp four-cylinder that is paired to a continuously variable automatic transmission. The range-topping Premier trim comes with a larger turbocharged four-cylinder engine, churning out 250 horsepower. All trim levels come with a front-wheel-drive configuration and AWD is not available even as an option. The RS trim appears more sporty from the outside but mechanically remains the same.

In addition to the above-mentioned features, Chevrolet offers many optional packages for advanced safety features and exterior styling updates. Most of the exterior styling packages are available for the LT trim only, making it stand out in the crowd. Some of the packages like Midnight Edition, Redline Edition, and Sport Edition offer many common features like 19" Black-painted aluminum wheels, P245/40R19 all-season tires, Black Chevrolet bowtie emblems, Black Malibu badge, blacked-out grille in different finishing and color, etc.

2022 Chevrolet Malibu Engine and Performance

7.0/10

“The 2022 Chevy Malibu offers good acceleration and a composed ride.”- The Car Connection

The 2022 Chevrolet Malibu is powered by a turbocharged 1.5-liter inline-4 engine, that can pump out a power output of 160 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. This engine is mated to a continuously variable transmission, to provide you those constant gear shifts. A more powerful 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 variant is also available, that can chug out around 250 hp and 260 lb-ft. This engine is paired with a 9-speed automatic gearbox and is exclusive to the Premier trim. Power is only sent to the front wheels as standard.

2022 Chevrolet Malibu Engine Bay

With the base powertrain onboard, the Malibu can charge up to a speed of 60 MPH within 7.8 seconds. The Malibu also clocks in the quarter-mile run in 16 seconds, thanks to the adequate power distribution provided by its CVT. Still, the Malibu ranks lower in the speed charts compared to the kings of its segment like the Honda Accord and the Toyota Camry. The smooth CVT gearbox makes up for a smooth ride, helping you to quickly navigate through the tight city streets.

2022 Chevrolet Malibu Handling

The 2022 Chevrolet Malibu is based on the 2021 model. So, we believe that its handling characteristics will be the same. It will not be a corner carver for sure but offer a good and comfortable ride for its passengers. The steering might feel less communicative and surely you might not like spirited driving sessions on this one. The brake rotors are expected to offer good braking performance and stop the car within 113 feet from a speed of 60 MPH, all thanks to its lighter curb weight.

The 2022 Malibu clearly cannot stand up against its rivals when it comes to performance. The rivals like Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, and Hyundai Sonata offer better performance. The difference in the performance is not major but while driving it will definitely feel underpowered. However, it has the upper hand when it comes to braking efficiency, offering the least stopping distance as compared to rivals.

All the sedans are pretty neck-to-neck when you compare their EPA estimates. The Accord just emerges the winner thanks to its above-average city and combined MPG. However, the Malibu offers the best city mileage and combined mileage in its class, thanks to its larger fuel tank than the Accord. The Camry is the best bet for long-distance journeys with its class-leading highway mileage.

2022 Chevrolet Malibu Interior

8.0/10

“This is where the 2022 Malibu shows its 2016 roots. It’s nice enough, with a smattering of soft-touch plastics in perceptible places.”- KBB.com

The 2022 Chevrolet Malibu can accommodate up to five passengers and will carry forward the same sweeping interior design. The dashboard sports symmetric look, with the infotainment display separating both the dash and the glovebox. The infotainment touchscreen sits comfortably in the middle of the dash, integrated within the center console and flanked by two large air vents. The cabin is very driver-centric thanks to the easy-to-use large knobs and buttons for the HVAC and infotainment controls. The front seats are wide and supportive, although the narrow back cushions may be an issue for some passengers.

2022 Chevrolet Malibu Seating

The Premier trim gets leather upholstery and climate-controlled front seats. The back seats are also spacious enough for most adults, with enough legroom to stretch a leg out. The trunk is also a commodious haven, with 15.7 cubic feet of space to fit in all your luggage. Interior space is also very commodious, although it isn’t one of the best in its class. Only the Premier trim gets a panoramic sunroof with a power sunshade for better airiness inside the cabin.

The Chevy Malibu possesses one of the best interior dimensions in its segment thanks to its spacious headroom and legroom. However, it loses out to the Accord in terms of front and rear legroom. The Hyundai Sonata lacks adequate rear legroom. The Accord also has the most spacious trunk in its segment, making it the best choice for families. The Chevrolet Malibu isn’t far behind the Accord in the cargo department.

2020 Chevrolet Malibu Infotainment System

The 2022 Chevrolet Malibu’s infotainment system is powered by the Chevrolet Infotainment 3 interface while the Premier trim gets the Plus version of it. The Chevrolet Malibu went through an exterior update way back in 2019. The 2022 Malibu gets the same sleek headlamps and visually appealing front chrome grille with a horizontal bow-tie emblem on it. 2022 Chevrolet Malibu Safety

7.0/10

The 2022 Chevrolet Malibu is the same as the 2021 model. The 2021 Chevrolet Malibu managed a 4-star safety rating in the federal crash tests arranged by NHTSA. In the IIHS safety tests, the midsize sedan received a ‘Good’ rating for most of the safety tests.

Chevrolet Malibu Crash Test

However, the sedan missed out on the IIHS Top Safety Pick award because of its ‘Marginal’ ratings in the small overlap front passenger-side test and the LATCH tests. As standard safety tech, the 2021 Malibu only got a rearview camera as standard.

Safety Features:

  • Rear Vision Camera
  • Teen Driver technology
  • Forward-collision warning w/ Automatic emergency braking (Optional)
  • Lane departure warning (Optional)
  • Lane-keep assist w/ Pedestrian Detection (Optional)
  • Adaptive cruise control (Optional)

2022 Chevrolet Malibu vs 2021 Toyota Camry

The Toyota Camry is one of the best sedans on the market, built on Toyota’s solid reliability reputation and vast global customer network. The Camry is faster on the trot than the Malibu and has a more powerful base engine as well.

2021 Toyota Camry

The Malibu’s only saving grace is its interior dimensions and cargo space. The Malibu is also offered at a lower base price, but we would still prefer the reliability of a Toyota Camry any time of the day.

2022 Chevrolet Malibu vs 2021 Honda Accord

The Honda Accord is a better bet than the Chevy Malibu if you consider outright acceleration and performance. The Accord also has the edge over Malibu with its outstanding fuel economy and interior space.

2021 Honda Accord

However, Malibu offers almost similar fuel economy figures at a lower price than the Accord, making it the more affordable option. But if you are willing to splurge, the Accord is the more well-rounded option.

2022 Chevrolet Malibu vs 2021 Hyundai Sonata

The Hyundai Sonata is quite a dark horse in the mid-size sedan segment, with its array of 3 engine options and cutting-edge technology. Malibu’s roomy interior dimensions just edge out the Sonata.

2021 Hyundai Sonata

Both the sedans are neck-to-neck in terms of fuel economy. The Malibu and the Sonata both are gifted with an intuitive tech suite. Overall, we think the Malibu edges out the Sonata, thanks to its lower base price.

2022 Chevrolet Malibu Final Verdict

8.0/10

The new Honda Accord and Toyota Camry will see a multitude of changes with respect to features and design. The 2022 Malibu can’t keep up with the latest trends. Nevertheless, the 2022 Chevy Malibu expects to end things on a high note with its handsome styling and a handful of feel-good features. There are a lot of decent traits that you can look forward to, like its impressive engine efficiency, roomy interiors, and good cargo capacity.
