The Chevrolet Malibu is another entrant on the growing list of sedans that are disappearing from General Motors’ lineup. With the Impala, Cruze, and the Volt already sent to the shadow realm, the mid-size sedan Malibu looks like an obvious candidate to cut down on GM’s manufacturing costs. We are being told that an EV might replace the outgoing Malibu, which will retire after the 2023 model year. Whether it reties or not, the 2022 iteration of the Chevrolet Malibu still has something left up its sleeves to compete against its segment’s best sedans.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The Malibu only went through a visual redesign back in 2019. With the midsize sedan almost going through seven years since a generational change, the 2022 Malibu will carry forward the same trend. With rivals like the Honda Accord and the Toyota Camry constantly changing and improving their traits, the Malibu is in for a tough time in the market. Nevertheless, we speculate all the features and packages that are available with the 2022 Malibu and how this midsize sedan can be a decent proposition for your family.

2022 Chevrolet Malibu Features

The 2022 Chevy Malibu midsize sedan is available in five trim levels: L, LS, RS, LT, and Premier. Powering the Malibu trims is a turbocharged 160-hp four-cylinder that is paired to a continuously variable automatic transmission. The range-topping Premier trim comes with a larger turbocharged four-cylinder engine, churning out 250 horsepower. The engine is connected to a 9-speed automatic transmission. All trim levels come with a front-wheel-drive configuration.

We Recommend

We liked the Premier trim, not because it is the most expensive trim, but it is the best available option to choose from. It is the only trim that comes with a powerful 2.0-liter engine and notable features that are not available on other trims.

2022 Chevrolet Malibu Price

Chevrolet has kept all customers in the dark regarding the new pricing of the 2022 Chevrolet Malibu. However, since no new changes are added this year, we expect the mid-size sedan to be available to families at the same price range of $23,065 to $34,790 as of last year’s model. There may be slight inflation in the price tag though, though we await the official confirmation from Chevrolet regarding the prices.

2022 Chevrolet Malibu Release Date

There has been no news regarding the launch of the 2022 Chevrolet Malibu. Although judging Chevrolet’s previous patterns and past launches, the 2022 Malibu may be arriving in the market by the fall of 2021.

2022 Chevrolet Malibu Engine and Performance

The 2022 Chevrolet Malibu is powered by a turbocharged 1.5-liter inline-4 engine, that can pump out a power output of 160 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. This engine is mated to a continuously variable transmission, to provide you those constant gear shifts. A more powerful 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 variant is also available, that can chug out around 250 hp and 260 lb-ft. This engine is paired with a 9-speed automatic gearbox and is exclusive to the Premier trim. Power is only sent to the front wheels as standard.

With the base powertrain onboard, the Malibu can charge up to a speed of 60 mph within 7.8 seconds. The Malibu also clocks in the quarter-mile run in 16 seconds, thanks to the adequate power distribution provided by its CVT. Still, the Malibu ranks lower in the speed charts compared to the kings of its segment like the Honda Accord and the Toyota Camry. The smooth CVT gearbox makes up for a smooth ride, helping you to quickly navigate through the tight city streets.

The Malibu’s underpowered base powertrain cannot compete against the likes of its segment stalwarts. However, with the more powerful 2.0-liter turbo 4-cylinder engine under its hood, the Malibu offers some level of resistance to its rivals. Still, the more powerful engines in its opponents' arsenal outclass the Malibu's engine in some performance aspects.

2022 Chevrolet Malibu Fuel Economy

Since the powertrains remain unchanged, the 2022 Chevrolet Malibu will retain EPA fuel economy estimates in the similar range of its 2021 model. The Malibu can spin around for a splendid MPG of 29 in the city and 36 on the highway. Thus, the Malibu gets a frugal combined MPG of 32.

With a 15.8-liter fuel tank, the Malibu can shell out 458/569/506 miles for city/highway/combined. The bigger 2.0-liter turbocharged variant returns an MPG of 22 in the city and 33 on the highway, equivalent to a combined MPG of 26. These figures are on par with some of the EPA estimates of the optional engines of Malibu’s esteemed rivals.

Range (City/Highway/Combined, in Miles)

All the sedans are pretty neck-to-neck when you compare their EPA estimates. The Accord just emerges the winner thanks to its above-average city and combined MPG. However, the Malibu offers the best city mileage and combined mileage in its class, thanks to its larger fuel tank than the Accord. The Camry is the best bet for long-distance journeys with its class-leading highway mileage.

2022 Chevrolet Malibu Interior

The 2022 Chevrolet Malibu will carry forward the same sweeping interior design from its 2021 predecessor. While this may not be one of the fanciest or most serene interiors, the cabin is ergonomically pleasing to look at. The dashboard sports an asymmetric look, with the infotainment display separating both the dash and the glovebox. The infotainment touchscreen sits comfortably in the middle of the dash, integrated within the center console and flanked by two large air vents. The cabin is very driver-centric thanks to the easy-to-use large knobs and buttons for the HVAC and infotainment controls.

Speaking of the seats, the interior dimensions are in the competitive range of most of its rivals. The front seats are wide and supportive, although the narrow back cushions may be an issue for some passengers. The back seats are also spacious enough for most adults, with enough legroom to stretch a leg out. The trunk is also a commodious haven, with 15.7 cubic feet of space to fit in all your luggage. Interior space is also very commodious, although it isn’t one of the best in its class.

The tech suite is also expected to remain the same within the 2022 Malibu. The 8-inch touchscreen remains the standard entertainment hub and is integrated with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and Bluetooth. A USB port aids connectivity while a 6-speaker sound system plays all your favorite tunes for you. Other optional gizmos that can be purchased separately include wireless charging, WiFi hotspot, push-button start, and an 8-inch digital driver’s display. A 9-speaker Bose audio system is also available as an option to play all your songs in high quality.

Rear Row (Headroom/Shoulder Room/Leg Room, in inches)

Trunk Capacity (cubic feet)

The Chevy Malibu possesses one of the best interior dimensions in its segment thanks to its spacious headroom and legroom. However, it loses out to the Accord in terms of front and rear legroom. The Accord also has the most spacious trunk in its segment, making it the best choice for families. The Chevrolet Malibu isn’t far behind the Accord in the cargo department.

2022 Chevrolet Malibu Exterior

The Chevrolet Malibu went through an exterior update way back in 2019. At that time, the sedan brought forth a refreshed design. The front fascia featured an eye-catching chrome trimming that connected the headlights. The headlights also became slimmer, while the Malibu also equipped a large front grille with horizontal lines and the Bowtie logo in the center.

The rear profile was updated too with a new pair of tail lights. Over the years, Chevy has retained the same design for its Malibu. Since the 2022 variant is also expected to be a crossover, we foresee no changes to its exterior design.

The Chevy Malibu maintains the harmonic proportions of a midsize sedan that are a treat to the eyes. These dimensions will be carried forward to 2022 as well. The Toyota Corolla is the heaviest of all followed by the Chevrolet and the Honda Accord.

2022 Chevrolet Malibu Safety

The 2022 Chevy Malibu is yet to be rated for safety. Since there are no major changes compared to the previous year’s model, we will check the safety ratings for the 2021 model year. The 2021 Chevrolet Malibu only got a 4-star rating in the federal crash tests arranged by NHTSA. In the IIHS safety tests, the midsize sedan received a ‘Good’ rating most of the safety tests. However, the sedan missed out on the IIHS Top Safety Pick award because of its ‘Marginal’ ratings in the small overlap front passenger-side test and the LATCH tests.

These results are a bit discouraging for Malibu, as other rivals managed to get much higher safety ratings. As standard safety tech, the 2021 Malibu only got a rearview camera as standard. Safety features of 2022 Chevrolet Malibu include:

  • Forward-collision warning
  • Lane departure warning
  • Lane change alert
  • Lane-keep assist with Pedestrian detection
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Park assist
  • Rear Vision camera
  • Rear child security door locks

2022 Chevrolet Malibu Competition

2022 Chevrolet Malibu vs Toyota Camry

The Toyota Camry is one of the best sedans on the market, built on Toyota’s solid reliability reputation and vast global customer network. The Camry is faster on the trot than the Malibu and has a more powerful base engine as well. The Malibu’s only saving grace is its interior dimensions and cargo space. The Malibu is also offered at a lower base price, but we would still prefer the reliability of a Toyota Camry any time of the day.

2022 Chevrolet Malibu vs Honda Accord

The Honda Accord is a better bet than the Chevy Malibu if you consider outright acceleration and performance. The Accord also has the edge over Malibu with its outstanding fuel economy and interior space. However, Malibu offers almost similar fuel economy figures at a lower price than the Accord, making it the more affordable option. But if you are willing to splurge in a few thousand bucks, the Accord is the more well-rounded option for you.

2022 Chevrolet Malibu vs Hyundai Sonata

The Hyundai Sonata is quite a dark horse in the midsize sedan segment, with its array of 3 engine options and cutting-edge technology. Malibu’s roomy interior dimensions just edge out the Sonata. Both the sedans are neck-to-neck in terms of fuel economy. The Malibu and the Sonata both are gifted with an intuitive tech suite. Overall, we think the Malibu edges out the Sonata, thanks to its lower base price.

2022 Chevrolet Malibu Final Verdict

Things don’t look so bright for the 2022 Chevrolet Malibu when you oversee the multitude of changes that are coming to the Honda Accord and the Toyota Camry. Both these stalwarts have kept the spirit of a midsize sedan alive in these times dominated by crossovers and SUVs, while the Malibu surrenders to the trend. Nevertheless, the 2022 Chevy Malibu expects to end things on a high note with its handsome styling and a plethora of cutting-edge features. There are a lot of decent traits that you can look forward to, like its impressive engine efficiency, roomy interiors, and frugal fuel economy.
