Expert Review

CARHP Editorial April 3, 2019

Starting at $28,945 the Hybrid sedan is a great choice for a value-for-money sedan. The Accord, however, comes at a lower price and better overall package. Alternatively, you could also opt for the Toyota Camry and the Honda Insight hybrid versions.

2019 Chevrolet Malibu hybrid Sedan Features

The Hybrid trim of the Chevrolet Malibu adds upon the LT trim of the gasoline variant. In addition to an electric propulsion system, you get a hybrid-specific gauge cluster and a larger infotainment screen.

Key Features

HD Rear Vision Camera

Enhanced Driver Information Center with 8-inch diagonal multi-color reconfigurable display

Chevrolet Infotainment 3 Plus System with 8-inch diagonal HD color touch-screen

We Recommend

Compared to the gasoline variant, we recommend you to choose the hybrid trim as it is not only more eco friendly, it also gets you better torque figures which makes the ride more responsive and fun. The upgraded infotainment is also a plus point in the hybrid.

2019 Chevrolet Malibu hybrid Sedan Engine

The Malibu Hybrid uses a non-turbo 1.8-liter inline-4 paired to a lithium-ion battery and an electric motor to sip fuel at a rate of just 46 mpg combined, according to the EPA. - Car Connection

Engine and Transmission

Along with a 1.8L inline-4 engine you also get something extra, a 50kW electric motor for the much needed extra oomph as well as fuel economy. The power and torque are bumped up to 182 hp and 277 lb-ft, channeled through a single-speed transmission to the front wheel. Not the ideal setup for good performance, but it’s functional, gets the job done.

Au contraire, the hybrid competitors like the Camry hybrid, the Accord hybrid and the Fusion Energi, make more horsepower with a combination of inline-4 engines and electric motors. Chevrolet’s own Volt makes mammoth torque of almost 300 lb-ft against the Malibu.

Acceleration

The extra torque from electric motor takes the Malibu hybrid to 60 mph in 7.4 seconds and onwards through to the quarter mile in 15.7 seconds. What follows the initial torque, is a droning engine which feels lackluster and uneventful. Compared to other hybrid sedans, the numbers you get from the Malibu are actually pretty good.

Ride and Handling

The Malibu is a comfortable A to B commuter, but athleticism is not a trait it can boast. The suspension is soft and compliant, absorbing most of the bumps before they reach the cabin, however a few sharp ones manage to sneak past the security. The steering is numb and lacks feedback, as is the case with most sedans in this segment.

With the hybrid powertrain in the arsenal, the throttle response is greatly improved in comparison to the gas powered variant. The handling on higher speed is not up to the mark, a the RS variant is the one to employ for this job.

Braking

The brakes on the Malibu are smooth and effortlessly reduce the speed without any jerks and jolts. However, in the state of emergency, suddenly applying brakes can leave the suspension flabbergasted. The 11.8-inch discs up front are larger than you find on most sedans and are ventilated for better heat dissipation.

When the brakes are put through their paces in the braking test, the Malibu is the first to come to a halt, while the Kia and Ford need extra tarmac to stop. In terms of pedal response, the Accord is the sedan to be in, with excellent brake modulation.

2019 Chevrolet Malibu hybrid Sedan Fuel Economy

As expected from a hybrid the mileage is unbelievably high. In the city the numbers reach 49 mpg, while highway economy peaks at 43 mpg. Such high economy is beyond imagination for gasoline cars, this realm is exclusive to hybrid vehicles only.

The Honda Insight is the one to keep an eye on, with the skyrocketing mpg in the city as well as the highways. The ones that lag behind are the Chevy Volt and especially the Fusion Energi, which can only manage about 42 miles to the gallon.

2019 Chevrolet Malibu hybrid Sedan Interior

Front-seat passengers have comfortable thrones that offer a good view out. Most 2019 Malibus on dealer lots have an 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, but a 6-way manual seat is standard. - car and driver

Seating and Comfort

The seats in the Chevy have great bolstering and support, creating a comfortable habitat for long rides. Even the back seats are accommodating, however the middle seat is best avoided for long journeys. The materials in the cabin are soft and premium to touch, while road and engine noise is effectively muted out

The eight way adjustable seats and the telescopic steering are easy to customize according to the driver’s needs, meanwhile providing excellent visibility all around. Comparatively the sedans in the segment have very similar interior character, with most manufacturers focussing their attention on providing optimal passenger comfort.

Infotainment System

The Malibu has good standard infotainment features, but it lacks standard driver aids and active safety features that are now common in the class. The standard 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and the range of OnStar services are excellent, and Wi-Fi is standard on all but the base trim.

Cargo Capacity

The sedans trunk suffers due to the battery the engineers have had to accommodate into the cabin. The loading and unloading height is low enough so you needn’t strain your back. Additionally, the interior storage is below average compared to the rest of the segment as well.

Up front, an extra-wide grille is flanked by narrow strips of headlights. Chrome detailing ties it all together nicely. We especially like the Malibu’s clean tail with its pert styling and Audi A7-like detailing. - Edmunds

Design and Dimensions

The updated Malibu comes with a large new front grille, which seems more appropriate for a futuristic hybrid vehicle. The long inclined roofline makes the back sporty and coupe-like, while the chrome styling complements the design dynamics flawlessly. The sharp geometrical LED daytime running lights give the vehicle a modern pizazz and panache.

The size is perfect to maneuver around city blocks and tight parking lots. Although the Chevy is a bit longer than most, it’s also a bit narrower and weight less than most of the cars in this segment. The motor and battery added to the chassis makes balancing the weight distribution an issue.

2019 Chevrolet Malibu hybrid Sedan Competition

Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid vs Honda Accord Hybrid

The Honda sedan is much more enjoyable to ride, not only in the city but also on highways. It has the perfect blend of performance, economy, utility and technology. Compared to the Malibu, the Honda not only has a brawnier engine you can also extract longer range from the battery.

The interiors focus on function rather than fancy in both of these sedans. From the outside, the design are equally impressive and completely subjective. Overall, the Honda sits a notch higher than the Chevy in the segment.

Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid vs Toyota Camry Hybrid

The Camry, just like the Accord another one of the heavy-weights in this mid-size sedan segments. Another on to have the right ingredients for performance, economy and technology. The Camry’s engine makes more power, but the torque output from the Malibu trumps the Toyota.

The interior is quite similar to each other in these sedans, instead of fancy materials, they are functional and get the job done. From the outside, the Malibu is much more pleasing to look at, the Toyota needs to really work on their front fascia and make it more appealing. In conclusion, the Malibu is a better choice over the Camry.

2019 Chevrolet Malibu hybrid Sedan Final Verdict

The Malibu is an excellent hybrid sedan and great value for money. Not only does it perform quite well, it has superb range from the battery and 50kW motor. Power delivery is seamless and you won’t notice when you’ve switched over from your motor to the engine. This sedan is a complete package, good styling on both interior and exterior, high on tech and practicality, and not too far behind in terms of cargo volume. If you’re unsure if you want the Chevy, the Honda Accord Hybrid is also the one you could consider.
