The 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab comes with no changes this year as last year's update has lent it the most striking exterior in the pickup truck segment. Under the hood, you get a V6 motor as standard while a choice between 2WD and 4WD is available. The 2020 Silverado 1500 Regular Cab is priced competitively and starts at $28,500 for the 2WD version while the 4WD version starts at $33,100. Also, for the Regular Cab style, there is only one trim and bed length option available.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab

Although there are no changes this year being a work truck Silverado 1500's fundamentals are strong with the best-in-class payload pulling and carrying capacity. Moving inside there isn't much glamour like the Ram 1500 as the material quality and fit and finish level are just about average. Over that with a barebone cabin and a mediocre gas mileage will the Silverado 1500 be able to entice the workhorse buyer segment, let's find out in this review.

The 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab is a competent workhorse but comes with only one V6 engine on offer. With no major changes this year the Silverado 1500 Regular Cab is offered in only one trim which is generally the case with most Regular Cab pickup trucks in the segment.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab Front Three-Quarter View

There isn't much in terms of standard creature comfort features or safety features although a couple of optional packages are provided to make life easier. That said, for this review, we have compared the 2020 Silverado with Ford F-150, RAM 1500, and GMC Sierra 1500.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Features

7.9/10

The 2020 Chevrolet Silverado Regular Cab is available in only one trim choice i.e. the WT or Work Truck with the option of having it in either 2WD or 4WD. The Silverado 1500 Regular Cab comes standard with a long bed measuring 8 feet. Apart from the standard features list, there are a couple of optional packages offered to make life easy. The WT Safety package if added gets you rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, and blind-spot monitoring.

While the WT Convenience package adds cruise control and power outside mirror, windows, and door locks. While the most sought-after package on the Silverado 1500 Regular Cab is the Z71 Off-road package that adds an automatic locking rear differential, off-road suspension, skid plates, two-speed transfer case, Z71 exterior decals, etc. Thus giving it a more sporty and upmarket look compared to the mundane looks of the WT model.

Since the WT trim comes without any driver-assist features and is barebones, we recommend getting both the available optional packages added to your truck to not only make your life easier but also safer when driving in it.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Engine and Performance

8.0/10

"Smooth-riding, well-controlled, and powerful with either V-8, the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado is pleasant to drive while it gets work done." -Car Connection

The 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab is powered by a sole 4.3-liter V6 engine that churns out 285 hp and 305 lb-ft of torque and is mated to an old-school 6-speed automatic transmission. The power delivery for the most part feels adequate and is more than enough for everyday duty.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab Engine

The handling feels quite balanced and nimble due to the presence of a highly responsive steering mechanism. The body roll is significant but the smooth ride overshadows this con. But it is still not close to Ram 1500's ride quality which remains the gold standard in the segment.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab Wheel Design & Brake

The braking performance of this pickup is also decent and it stops from 60-0 mph is just 126 feet which is average for the segment. While when it comes to pulling power the Silverado 1500 Regular Cab can tow up to 10,100 lbs and carry 2,250 lbs in its cargo bed.

The Silverado comes packaged with a 4.3-liter V6 from the factory which produces 285 hp, yet when F-150 and Ram 1500 come into the picture, it is by all accounts a little underpowered as Ram's motor delivers a monstrous 305 hp, which makes it a pioneer among its opponents. But when it comes to outright acceleration the F-150 due to its lighter body is the quickest among all. While the Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 twin with their monstrous 305 lb-ft of torque can pull and carry the maximum amount of weight among all.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Fuel Economy

7.4/10

The 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 powered by the V6 has an EPA estimated gas mileage of 16 mpg in the city, 21 mpg on the highway, and 17 mpg under mixed driving conditions.

Gas mileage isn't the forte of the Silverado so Chevrolet has given it the biggest fuel tank capacity to match the range of more fuel-efficient rivals like the F-150 and the Ram 1500.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Interior

7.0/10

"A versatile bed and a smartly designed interior make the 2020 Chevy Silverado a workhorse." - The Car Connection

The interior of the 2020 Silverado 1500 Regular Cab offers a spacious cabin. The Regular Cab gets only front row seats which can accommodate two or max, three passengers, comfortably. The interior is basic and lacks even a hint of creature comfort and convenience. Although the seats offer decent support and are bolstered well to hold you snug.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab Dashboard

Chevrolet offers only a couple of standard features with the base trim with no power accessories or adjustment on the standard list. The infotainment system on the Regular Cab is a 7-inch touchscreen with features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, a six-speaker sound system, etc offered as standard.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab Infotainment

The amount of cargo space in the bed of the Silverado is generous at 89.1 cubic feet compared to its rivals taking the crown from the RAM 1500 at 57.5 cubic feet and F-150 at 62.3 cubic feet.

Compared to the rival pickups the Silverado 1500 and for that matter its corporate cousin the Sierra 1500 offers the best headroom and leg space while shoulder room is almost similar in all the trucks.

"A square-jawed grille dominates the 2020 Chevy Silverado's look on the outside, but inside it's all business with smartly placed controls." - The Car Connection

The 2020 Silverado Regular Cab was redesigned from the ground up just last year so there are no changes this year. With the redesign, it got lighter construction and looks refreshed than the  2018 Silverado 1500. In terms of curb weight, it lost somewhere around 450 lbs. which is a significant number for a work truck.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab Front Three-Quarter View

Dimension wise there are no major changes and the Silverado 1500 Regular Cab with an 8 feet bed measures 229.5-inches bumper to bumper while between the wheels you have a class-leading 139.6-inches of length.

Among the rivals, none can boast of having as big dimensions as the Silverado 1500. But when it comes to ground clearance the F-150 is the one that offers 0.6-inches more clearance than the Silverado 1500 which is significant for those who frequent off-beaten paths.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Safety

7.9/10

With regards to the safety of occupants, Chevrolet has been lousy to provide advanced safety or driver-assist features as standard. The Silverado 1500 Regular Cab WT trim hardly gets any safety feature except for a couple of driver-assist features which are again a part of an optional package. As for safety ratings, IIHS is yet to crash-test the 2020 Silverado 1500 Regular Cab while NHTSA has given it a safety rating of four out of a maximum of five stars, which is decent for this class.

Safety Features:

  • Rear vision camera
  • Teen driver
  • Available rear cross-traffic alert
  • Available blind-spot monitoring
  • Available Front and rear parking sensors

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Competition

8.0/10

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 vs 2020 Ford F150

The F-150, when set against the Silverado 1500. Be it value, rode and handling, or even mileage, the F-150 demonstrates to be an extraordinary choice. Although when load space, inside and outside dimensions are taken into view, the Silverado gets the spotlight. Both the trucks have their very own advantages and disadvantages.

2020 Ford F-150 Regular Cab

F-150 is for the individuals who need an increasingly down-to-earth truck with better day-to-day drivability. The Silverado then again, is for the individuals who need a truck with good pulling and carrying capacity alongside a roomy cabin to go with.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado vs 2020 Ram 1500

Ram 1500 is a genuine competition to Chevrolet Silverado 1500. Back to basics, reasonable price, power output, and towing abilities. It is an overall refined and more upmarket truck compared to the Silverado 1500.

2020 Ram 1500 Regular Cab

That being said, if you can compromise with cabin space and cargo area for those extra miles and good power then the Ram 1500 is the machine to go with.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Final Verdict

6.8/10

Regardless of whether utilized as an everyday driver or an off-roader, the all-new Silverado is an ideal work truck. The V6 under its hood packs in sufficient punch to pull and carry a segment-leading payload. Although the same takes a toll on its gas mileage which is the least in the class. Also, when it comes to cabin quality and features on offer the Silverado 1500 falls behind its much better equipped and modern rivals like the F-150 and the Ram 1500. That being said, even after these misses the Silverado 1500 remains a compelling choice in the segment.
