The Silverado has been one of the most successful nameplates for Chevrolet, which incidentally has also made it one of the most beloved fullsize trucks in recent times managing to clock close to 600,000 units in sales consistently every year. The current fourth generation of Silverado trucks have been on sale since the 2019 model year and also did receive a midlife refresh just recently. On that, we see the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab continue over as a carryover for the 2023 model year with minor changes with a slight bump in price tag. However, the fancier trims like the ZR2 are set to be unveiled with new Bison packages for the new model year, but that version would be reviewed separately.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

As for the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab, you can only have it in the Work Truck (WT) package, which is available in a standard 8-feet cargo bed configuration. The base turbocharged 4-cylinder mill that is good for over 300hp is still on work under the hood and will send the drive through an 8-speed automatic transmission as standard. A 355hp V8 with a 10-speed auto is also on offer here, however, we still do not get the Duramax diesel engine even as an option for 1500-series WT trims, which is a bummer for what essentially is built to be a barebones and efficient work truck. The standard truck comes in rear-wheel-drive configuration while the AWD commands an additional $4,500 from the base price, which is expected to be around $33,590. The closest competition for the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab would be the Ford F-150 Regular Cab, the GMC Sierra 1500 Regular Cab, and the RAM 1500 Classic Regular Cab

Features

The 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab, as seen from the previous iterations of the fourth generation of trucks, will only be made available in the Work truck format. This means the single cab is stuck with the base equipment package and will only be made in the fullsize 8-feet long bed configuration. The only choices you would be making are with the two engine options, which are the 2.7L turbocharged inline-4 mill and the 5.3L V8, placed at a price gap of $1,500 between them. While the base gets an 8-speed automatic, the V8 gets a newer 10-speed unit. You could also opt for an All-wheel-drive configuration here, but the base prices, in this case, would be pushed up by almost $3500 to $4,500 depending on the powertrain chosen.

Talking about equipment, since the trim in discussion is the utilitarian one, you are pretty much limited to what you get from the factory and what you could equip over it. However, Chevrolet has not skimped on the basics as the truck does come with a sweet 7-inch infotainment system with Apple Carplay and Android Auto connectivity as standard, which definitely helps uplift the cabin’s vibe. A semi-automatic climate control system, vinyl upholstery, available cruise control, steering mounted Audio controls, 3.5-inch (4.2-inch optional) driver information screen and a couple of USB sockets are the most noticeable features inside. Apart from that, on the outside, you do get automatic exterior lighting control, a power locking tailgate, 17-inch high gloss silver painted wheels and even a power-operated trailer mirror when equipped right.

The 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab can also be equipped with a series of packages that can improve comfort, convenience, safety and performance of this fullsize truck. Some of the available options include a value package at $1,555, a convenience package at $1,660, a safety package at $1,090, a confidence package at $615, a snow-plow prep package at $400, a trailering package at $395, and a handful of other visual upgrade packages.

We Recommend

Since we are stuck here with a single trim here, there is limited configuration options for the Regular Cab trim. However, we do get two engine options here from which the 2.7L turbocharged motor is our pick over the V8 owing to its higher payload capacity, similar tower rating, and better real-world fuel economy. The $1,555 Value package is also something we suggest opting for as it brings in a lot of features like power windows, keyless entry, cruise control, power door lock, power mirrors, rear window defogger, a trailer hitch, and hitch guidance systems.

Release Date

Chevrolet has not officially unveiled the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab as of now, but based on what we know from the past, the truck should see a transition in the model year by the end of the third quarter of this year. Production would begin almost the same time while deliveries are expected by New Year.

Engine and Performance

2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab is a rather decent performer. The 2.7L 4-cylinder might sound puny on a 4,500-pound fullsize truck, but with a turbocharger slapped on, it pushes out around 310hp and 430lb-ft of torque, the latter of which is significantly more than what the V8 engines of this class produce. This engine can propel the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab past 60mph in a quick 7.1 seconds while the quarter mile comes up in around 15.4 seconds if someone’s interested. You also have a 5.3 EcoTec V8 on offer here which pushes around 335hp for slightly snazzier performance, but its lower torque figure does mean that the overall tow rating is not that different and you also are compromising on fuel economy and payload capacity. However, the usable performance on both engines are rather good and is up to most tasks you ever make it go through. While the V8 feels effortless from the word go thanks to its higher displacement, the smaller turbo unit shows its muscle with the meaty power band and strong hauling capabilities. The inline-4 also feels slightly better on the highways and drinks far less fuel if you are careful with the throttle.

The 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab, in base engine trim, performs the best in the competition here. The same goes for the GMC Sierra as it shares most of its mechanicals with the Silverado. The turbocharged motor is what favors the GM twins here as oodles of torque kicking in from engine speeds as low as low 1500rpm help it easily leaves the competition in its dust both in payload and trailering capabilities. The F-150 and the RAM 1500 Classic have similar tow ratings, however, the Ford does manage to offer better payload capabilities probably owing to the better gearbox. One thing to note here is that all these figures are applicable to the base engine configuration and the figures can vary drastically when a different engine is equipped.

2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab Ride and Handling

Although the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab does not have one of the smoothest rides when compared to other trucks in its class, it is noticeably one of the better handling ones. You definitely feel the size here, but the light electrically powered steering and slightly stiffer suspension setting do lend it a stable ride at high speeds and feel better to take around corners without that sloppiness that you expect from big bulky trucks. The steering lacks any sort of real communication owing to the electric setup, but it does feel responsive to small inputs and points the nose where you want it to at nominal speeds. Apart from the mediocre ride comfort, there is pretty much nothing that could stop you from having long drives in this truck.

2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab Braking Performance

Braking would probably be the most underwhelming part of any fullsize pickup truck, especially when hauling or towing stuff. However, the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab did surprise us with its solid stoppers that feel pretty strong and progressive in daily usage scenarios. Even though the 13.5-inch front and 13.6-inch rear rotor combination is nothing to boast about, the truck did manage to record the best stopping distance of 123 feet from 60mph, which is pretty commendable for something that weighs over 4,500 pounds. The pedal feels good and the increase in biting force feels linear to the brake travel. This combined with Chevy’s StabiliTrak systems, you wouldn’t be complaining about the braking performance on the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab.

The RAM 1500 Classic, despite sporting the biggest hardware, here takes the most distance to come to a halt, recording a 125-feet stop from 60mph. The 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab comes a close second with a recorded best distance of 123 feet when jamming the brakes from the same speed. The GMC Sierra, given that it shares most of its working hardware with the Silverado, should also manage identical stopping distances. The Ford F-150 on the other hand, weighing a neat 5000 pounds less than the nearest competition here, manages to stop the best by posting a class-leading braking distance of just 119 feet from 60 mph.

Fuel Economy

Even though the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab does come sporting a small 2.7L engine as standard, the fuel economy does not come out all that interesting. It manages a decent 20mpg on a combined driving cycle, but on highways, the best it has been rated for is 22mpg, which honestly is a bit low considering the size of the engine. The 24-gallon fuel tank is decently big, but not enough to impress with its range, which yet again is far from what we have seen from the best in class. Opting for the V8 further brings down the economy figures to just 17 mpg in the city and around 18mpg in the combined cycle.

The RAM 1500 Classic, despite sporting the biggest engine here and pushing out some commendable numbers from it, still manages to come out as the fuel economy champ here. Even though the city efficiency is slightly low, it gains background with the best highway economy number and its massive 26-gallon fuel tank. This enables the RAM 1500 to become the only truck here to offer over 600 miles of highway range and over 500 miles in the combined cycle. The F-150 is the second-best performer in individual economy numbers owing to its lower power rating and slick 10-speed automatic. The Silverado and the GMC Sierra do fall to the back of the pack here in both economy and tank ranges.

Interior

Built to be a utilitarian truck from scratch, the insides of the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab are something we would tag robust rather than premier. The only premium amenity that we see it getting is a 7-inch Chevrolet infotainment system, which probably has the worst backup camera we have ever seen in recent times, and a semi-automatic (or so they call it) climate control system. Features like power windows, power mirror controls, and keyless entry are an option on this truck. Even though we are okay with Chevy leaving out premium stuff, we are not sure if we could stand by them leaving out basic amenities, especially with the base prices increasing with each model year significantly.

Talking about seating and appointment, the seats themselves are really large and accommodating, but we are not sure if the vinyl surfacing and slightly firm cushioning offer the best seating comfort. Though the overall cabin space is one of the biggest we have seen in a single cab, the overall comfort is not the best it seems. There are not a whole lot of amenities to play with here but you do get a 3.5-icnh (or 4.2-inch) driver information display, a couple of USB ports, a 12V power outlet, a day-night rear view mirror and rubberized floor mats as standard. Also, when talking about usability, the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab will only be available in a long bed configuration and this does help it boost the cargo area to almost 89.10 cu-ft., which is rather large for this class.

The Silverado and the GMC Sierra, both sharing similar bodywork, comes in as the roomiest trucks here owing to their bigger overall exterior dimension including the wheelbases. However, the GM twins, with their 89.10 cu-ft. cargo, though appear as the most practical ones here initially, a closer inspection does reveal them to be in their long bed configuration, which the Ford F-150 and the RAM 1500 Classic isn’t. Equip these two with their bigger bed options and you are looking at close to 75 cu-ft. on the RAM and almost 77.4 cu-ft. on the Ford F-150.

Some standout interior features of the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab include:

  • 3.2-inch drive information screen (4.2-inch unit available)
  • Single zone manual/ semi-automatic climate control
  • 4-way manual front seat adjustments
  • Vinyl seating surfaces
  • Rubberized vinyl floor mats
  • Cruise control (available)

How intuitive is the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab’s infotainment system?

The2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab runs on a basic 7.0-inch Chevrolet system 3 that has been paired with a 2-speaker audio system. The screen does not match the standards (both in color and crispness) of something that’s seen on new compact cars that are priced similarly, but the UI does feel simple and swift enough. The system does come with Android Auto and Apple Carplay connectivity as standard which does increase its functionality. You do Bluetooth hand free and get two front USB ports for additional connectivity options. Steering-mounted controls are also standard. You also do get standard steering-mounted audio controls which should enhance the overall media experience made available.

Standout infotainment features available with the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado1500 Regular Cab:

  • 7-inch Chevrolet 3 color touchscreen system
  • Android Auto and Apple Carplay
  • Bluetooth hands-free
  • 2-speaker standard audio system
  • 2-front USB ports
  • Steering wheel mounted audio controls
Exterior

The 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab will adorn more or less the same silhouette as the previous model year, with the revised cues that came in last year with the facelift. Being a barebones work truck, the overall styling is more utilitarian-looking than its luxury/family-oriented counterparts. As for that, you have to adjust to the non-body colored bumpers, door handles, mirror caps, and the bright silver-colored 17-inch steel wheels. You do get packages that boost the exterior looks with body-colored mirror caps, polished exhaust tips, and chrome bumpers, but with the asking price of over $1050, we really doubt if you would need it on what essentially is going to be a workhorse meant to take all the beating.

The outside equipment on offer here is also a bit underwhelming at this high of a base asking price. The only standard amenity that we could point out as being useful was the automatic headlamps, power locking tailgate and the cab-mounted cargo lamps. Even features like keyless entry and power operated outside mirrors come in as an option, which in this day and age is unacceptable for a vehicle that commands a base price of 35 grand. Also, unlike its GMC counterpart, the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab is also not available in the standard bed model which might be a downer for those looking for a compact work truck.

The GM siblings are dimensionally the biggest trucks here with the longest wheelbase which inadvertently makes them the heftiest of the bunch as well. The RAM 1500 Classic on the other hand is the smallest truck here but weighs as much as the GM twins. The Ford strikes the right balance between size and space here, coming in as the lightest truck weighing in just over 4,000 pounds and also the one to offer a big 77.4 cu-ft. cargo bed when equipped with the long bed format. However, there is no beating the Silverado 1500 and the Sierra 1500 here in capacity as both offers nearly 90 cu-ft. the cargo area when equipped right.

Some of the standout exterior features on the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab include;

  • Halogen headlamps with daytime running lights
  • Manually operated exterior mirrors (heated units available)
  • Power locking rear tailgate
  • Power operated trailering mirrors (available)
  • 20-Inch bright silver painted alloy wheels
Safety

The 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab, essentially underpinning a ladder on frame chassis, does perform a bit underwhelming in crash safety tests. Though the big size might make it look safe, NHTSA only rates it 4-Stars in crash safety while the IIHS gives it an average ‘Good’ rating, with a ‘Marginal’ rating on driver side overlap and a ‘Poor’ rating for headlamps performance. Also, the active driver assistance features are also non-existent on the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular, Cab which requires you to opt for the $1090 Work Truck Safety Package and the $615 driver safety confidence package to bring in the entire suite of assistance tech.

Some of the standout safety features available with the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab include;

  • Rear vision camera
  • Tire pressure monitoring system
  • Automatic emergency braking (available)
  • Forward collision alert with pedestrian braking (available)
  • Rear cross-traffic alert (available)
  • Lane change alert with blind zone alert (available)
  • OnStar connected services (available)
Competition

2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab vs 2023 Ford F-150 Regular Cab

The Ford F-150 Regular Cab will be the most serious competitor to the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab here. Priced almost in the same neighborhood, the F-150 has always offered the best compromise of affordability, practicality, capability, and economy. However, the fourth generation Silverado 1500 Regular Cab does come out as the bigger, more powerful, and practical truck of the two in their standard guises, which gives it an upper hand here as far as work trucks go. That said, people do not always want the biggest of trucks to drive around in, which makes the F-150 the sensible option with its available standard bed configuration. So, opting for either of the trucks should boil down to the requirements and brand preferences of individuals, and picking a winner is a bit tough here.

2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab vs 2023 GMC Sierra Regular Cab

The GMC Sierra 1500 is the slightly posher version of the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab, essentially sharing most of the hardware underneath the skin including the exterior dimensions. Apart from the availability of the standard bed option we don’t think there is anything that is working in the GMC’s favor, which can presumably make it the better work truck here. Sure it does look a bit upmarket when compared to the basic Silverado, but is it worth the 3 grand premium it commands over the Chevy for essentially the same functionality? We think not!

2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab vs 2022 RAM 1500 Classic Regular Cab

The RAM 1500 Classic straightway gets an advantage here for being the cheaper truck here with its base prices starting a nice $3,000 less than the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab. However, this price advantage comes with its own perks as you are basically getting a decade-old truck here with dated tech and looks with the RAM 1500. The RAM, in its standard avatar, is significantly less capable than the Silverado 1500 Regular Cab with a lower tow rating and payload capability. The RAM is also the smaller truck in both cabin and bed size no matter what configuration you opt for, compromising the overall practicality levels. The only place where the RAM stands out is with its slightly better fuel economy ratings and bigger fuel tank.

Final Verdict

As we already did mention in the overview, there is no stopping people from getting the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 series of trucks. Available in a wide range of trims and engine options, this name is one that has earned its place in the hearts of the people for quite some time now. Even though we are talking about the single cab work truck here, the Silverado 1500 is still one of the most practical ones out there with the biggest cargo bed area and some of the most capable engine/ transmission options on offer for its class. Even though we did call it out for being a bit barebones in tech and safety, most trucks in this category fall to this similar fault. So, even if the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Regular Cab does come in at a slight premium over the competitors, we still think it’s worth the slight price bump.
