“The optional 6.2-liter V8 is certainly an impressive engine, and braking performance is good in this segment, but the Silverado’s responsiveness and handling leave something to be desired. Competitors do it better.” – Edmunds

In the engine department, Chevy Silverado has 3 choices, a 4.3 Liter naturally aspirated V6 which pumps 285 horsepower and a best in class 305-pound-feet of torque, 5.3 Liter V8 with 355 horses and 383-pound-feet of torque and 6.2 Liter V8 with 420 horses and 460-pound-feet of torque. Its mated to 6 speed automatic which seems a bit sluggish.

In comparison, Ram 1500 is the best. With a price tag of $33,295, it’s the cheapest of the lot. 3.6 Liter Naturally aspirated V6 puts an impressive 305 horsepower with 269-pound-feet of torque. In terms of transmission, an 8-speed automatic in the Ram is the best among the lot.  Sierra 1500 and Silverado are almost similar to each other in terms of price, engine and transmission section.

Acceleration

Chevy Silverado is a huge pick-up truck. It doesn’t have a race car acceleration timing but for its size, it does pretty good. With a 0-60 MPH of 7.4 seconds and a quarter mile time of 15.1 seconds, it does pretty damn well than most sedans.

With a 0-60MPH of 6.1 seconds and a 14.7 second quarter mile time, the Ford F150 is the fastest among the competition.  Silverado and Sierra have same 0-60 MPH and quarter mile time of 7.4 seconds and 15.1 seconds respectively. Ram 1500 comes in at 7.6 seconds and with quarter mile time of 15.6 seconds making it the slowest among the lot.

Handling and steering

2018 Chevrolet Silverado feels like the most carlike of the full-size pickups. Responsive handling with long wheelbase makes it enjoyable to drive this truck. It’s poised and stable in corners at any reasonable speed, it steers accurately and is calm and composed as a road train when you’re cruising the interstate highways.

Potholes, mismatched pavement and gravel do make the ride a little harsh but it’s not bone rattling. Other than this, Silverado handles like a king on the road.

Braking

Chevrolet Silverado is huge and heavy at 5036 pounds and to stop a behemoth of a vehicle that size you need meaty brakes. Silverado comes with big ventilated discs in the front and rear with rotor size of 13 inches and 13.6 inches respectively. It takes about 124 feet to bring Chevy Silverado to a complete halt.

Comparing the Chevy to other big trucks, Ford F150 has the best brakes. 13.8 inch in the front and 13.7 in the rear combine for a great stopping power. With a weight of 4529 pounds, it’s also the lightest among all the trucks which works in favor when it comes to a complete stop at 121 feet from 0-60MPH.

Towing Capacity

With a rated 5500 pounds towing capability for 2WD Chevrolet Silverado, it shows the immense pulling power the vehicle holds. If it’s a 4WD, the towing capacity increases to 7600 pounds for 4.3L V6, 11,100 pounds for 5.3L V8 and a best in class 12,500 pounds for 6.2L V8.

Comparing the towing capacity, Silverado, F150 and Sierra 1500 are identical at 5500 pounds. Identical payload rating of 1840 pounds on Sierra and Silverado is the best among the lot. Ford F150 with 1750 pounds of payload is the lowest among competitors because of small cargo box. Mind you, all the trucks competing here are 2 wheel drive.

Fuel Economy

6.5/10

“The Silverado sends a mixed message when it comes to its fuel economy: The EPA numbers are near the top of the class, and, in our testing, its real-world highway fuel economy proved to be excellent. However, its two V-8s score lower EPA fuel-economy ratings than the Ford F-150’s EcoBoost V-6.” – Car and Driver

Chevrolet Silverado has a big thirsty engine which affects the fuel economy figures. It gives 18 MPG in the city cycle, 24 MPG in the highway circle and 20 MPG in the combined driving cycle. In comparison, Ford F150 has an excellent fuel economy. 20 MPG in city, 25MPG on the highway and 22MPG in combined city and highway driving cycle.

Sierra 1500 is almost identical with Silverado in fuel economy ratings. Ram has the lowest mileage in the city run but on the highway is at par with F150’s 25 MPG. This is due to the fact that it has an 8-speed automatic transmission as compared to 6-speed automatic available in the rest of the competition.

Interior

6.2/10

“Base models of the 2018 Chevy Silverado benefit from the same sensible layout, ample storage, and nicely textured plastics as the rest of the lineup. That’s not to say there aren’t benefits for paying more; move up the trim ladder and you’ll get even higher-end materials, and the top-of-the-line High Country lays on the luxury nice and thick.” – Kelley Blue Book

Steering wheel houses buttons to navigate cruise control and buttons to interact with center display and the gauge cluster. Volume buttons are on the back of the steering wheel. Gauge cluster is well laid out with big dials for MPH and RPMS and 4 small gauges on the top for battery voltage, oil temperature, fuel gauge and oil level. Centre display between the 2 big dials shows distance traveled, fuel economy, immediate consumption, average speed etc.

The gear shifter has a stalk which is located on the right side of steering wheel. Pretty much rest is standard buttons for windows, door locks, mirror controls etc. Headlights and flywheel to shift the car from 2WD to 4WD are located on the left of the steering.

At the back, being a crew cab, a lot of interior space is provided. Passengers well over 6 feet would easily find the back seats comfortable, they don’t offer much thigh support but headroom, shoulder room, and knee room are huge. Three adults can easily accommodate in the back of the Silverado.

Seating and Comfort

Chevrolet Silverado offers immense amount interior comfort. The truck can take 6 passengers with no space issues. The front and rear head, shoulder and legroom are massive in crew cab model due to wide body and tall stance.

In comparison, all the trucks provide the same amount of space more or less because of their ginormous sizes but if you closely look at the Ram 1500, it does fall short of 1 to 3 inches. Front Leg of 41 and rear headroom of 39.9 is the least in comparison to the competition.

Infotainment

Entertainment on the Silverado is anchored by the

  • Chevrolet MyLink interface
  • 6- speaker audio
  • Voice-activation technology
  • Bluetooth for hands-free calling and audio streaming
  • USB data port to name a few.
  • 7-inch touchscreen feels a bit dated in comparison to others, but it does come with android auto and apple carplay which helps in scrolling through features of the phone on the car’s infotainment. Like Google and Apple are constantly updating their software to fix bugs and other issues, it will display on the screen. As for the Silverado infotainment well, it doesn’t get that much updates.

Exterior

6.9/10

Massive, macho and muscular, the Silverado looks all business even when it’s standing. The boxy shape with menacing look in the front and a big logo in the grille make it instantly identifiable as a Chevrolet. The Silverado has endless configurations list such as cab size, bed lengths, interior trims or any special equipment packages which make the potential to get the desired vehicle unlimited.

Dimensions and Weight

2018 Chevy Silverado 1500 is a long truck at 239.5 inches. It’s bigger than most 7-seater SUV’s available in the market. It is 80 inches wide and 74.17 inches in height with a ground clearance 8.73 inches, it would cross over many obstacles like they are nothing. Wheelbase is 143.5 inches which provide for ample space inside the big airy cabin.

Also, 79.9 inches of width and 75.6 inches in height makes the best among the lot.  Ram is the shortest in length at 237.9 inches, has the lowest ground clearance of 7.6 inches and shortest wheelbase of 140 inches.

Competition

Silverado Vs Ram 1500

Ram 1500 has come of age and with regular updates coming every year. With around 20 more horses, Ram is superior than Silverado and the cabin quality is also better. Ride quality is much better in Ram as it’s got air suspension as optional which makes the ride subtle even over harsh roads. Silverado doesn’t fare well in that department.

Silverado Vs F150

Ford F150 is the best-selling pick-up truck in America. With regular updates like tweaked EcoBoost engines, 10-speed transmission, intuitive Sync 3 infotainment, extensive list of options (Phew! there are a lot), it beats Silverado hands down in many departments. Considering the fact that Chevrolet has had reliability issues, Ford is the best bet among the 2.

Silverado Vs Sierra 1500

Sierra and Silverado are actually brothers. They are same under the skin which means even they lag in every department as compared to rivals. It’s absolutely based on person’s choice which exterior they find attractive.

Final Verdict

Chevrolet Silverado is an absolute steal at the price it is available. It rides well but not over big potholes and gravel roads, it has the best towing capabilities and renowned off-road pedigree. Chevrolet should do some updates to the infotainment and add more power outlets to the vehicle. It hasn’t got much change for 2018 but there is a new 2019 Silverado coming next year which might change the game in this segment.
