The Chevy Silverado 1500 is a popular full-size pickup truck, but not as much as its competitors. The Silverado weighs almost 5000lbs and has massive towing capacities and a great choice of various powertrains. The truck is headlined by a 420-hp 6.2-liter V-8 that is really quick and efficient. The Silverado can also be bought with a long list of trailer-assist technologies and several helpful features, like the multi-function tailgate and a camera display in the rearview mirror.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

However, the Chevy's cheap and not too great quality interior as well as its harsh ride quality make it feel worse than the Ford F-150 and Ram 1500. While both of those rivals offer great value, the 2021 Silverado is still a highly customizable and impressive pickup. Chevrolet's Silverado is priced at $34,900 and goes all the way up to $45,300, and the rivals for this would be the Toyota Tacoma, RAM 1500, and Ford F-150. The Silverado is a powerful truck and that is no doubt but the disadvantage of rougher ride quality and the interior is a letdown.

Features

The Chevrolet Silverado starts from a very low price point at $27,100 and for that price, we get a model named Work Truck which is a pretty basic car, but the features are really good on offer. The price of the Silverado however goes upto $33,695 for the fully loaded off-road spec Z71 Trim. While there is one model in between the two trims priced at $29,700 and that would be the LT.

Which Trim should you buy?

The LT is a very capable vehicle in itself and if your purpose is just basic Hauling, towing, and movement there might not be a need to go beyond that but there is no stop to how much we can wish for and my personal favorite and pick would be the fully loaded custom trail and go all out for the truck I wish to own.

Engine and Performance
7.3/10

The Engine on the Chevrolet Silverado is a 2.5L inline 4. Yes, it might seem a small engine for a vehicle that size but the engine has quite enough grunt to haul this heavy car even when it is loaded. The small power unit produces 200 hp and 191 lb of torque and that is a decent number from an engine like that.

The RAM 1500 produces more power at 305 hp than the Rager and the Tacoma but the Silverado makes it better with 310 hp with an even smaller 2.7 Inline 4 engine and that makes things even better as a smaller engine means more efficiency and less weight which makes everything better. The F-150 however has the more fun and feisty V6 engine and the only one from this list to have a 10-speed automatic transmission, helping the truck put down the good 290 hp from the V6 on the road.

How well does the Silverado handle?

The 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 offers good ride comfort and is easy to drive around. The truck feels light. I also can hold up well in corners. While driving, the suspension might feel very stiff, but maybe that is in order to give the truck a 2200 pound payload capacity. The Silverado, thanks to the suspension, has a bouncy feel to it even if there were people in the cabin. The rival trucks have a better ride quality on offer and that is one of the reasons for the Silverado being sold a little less.

The Stiff suspension is this truck’s boon and bane. It helps the car tow more and become a very powerful workhorse and the stiff suspension also helps to improve the truck’s overall handling. However, this results in the lessening of the ride quality and comfort as every undulation on the road can be felt by those sitting in the cabin.

2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab Braking Performance

The Silverado comes with a good bunch of brakes with 12” brakes on both the front and rear it is equipped with a good amount of stopping power and that complimented by the lightweight of 3936lbs makes this a force to reckon with in the braking front. It has brakes bigger than the Ranger and the Tacoma and that is something.

The RAM is equipped with massive brakes at 14” in both the front and the rear, which is a need considering that the truck weighs the highest at 4971lbs and that stopping power is necessary, the Tacoma comes with the smallest brakes at just 10” while being heavier than the Silverado and the Ford F-150 share the dimensions at the 13” mark for the brake’s rotors.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

The Silverado returns the least mileage in the city at just 17 mpg. It is really really thirsty while driving through the city while the competition is doing much better. However, out on the highway, it returns 24mpg, which is not great but considering that the much smaller Toyota Tacoma returns only 23 mpg on the highway this seems a win.

RAM is just astonishing. It has the biggest engine out of the 4 trucks here, it produces the most power and is the most fuel-efficient by returning a 20mpg in the city and 25mpg on the highway, there is the combined figure of 26mpg. The Ranger sits at a sweet spot at 21mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway. The RAM has the biggest advantage considering the mileage figures and the huge 26-gallon fuel tank.

Interior
7.7/10

The interior of the Chevrolet Silverado is a decent place to be in, it has all the basic and better creature comforts that can be offered for the truck and space. The seats seem comfortable as well and are not a component to be complained about. The Silverado offers a lot of room in comparison to most of the rival’s segments, the quality on offer could be better. There is a lot of hard plastic on the dashboard. everything feels built to last and would go well with the abuse these trucks go through. The 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 has a cabin that is full of space, comfort, and feels convenience.

2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab

The Cab’s configuration can seat up to six people. The front row can seat up to 3 people. The seat material mostly chosen for the lower trims is cloth while the higher trims got or used leather upholstered seats. The seats are decently comforting to anyone who wishes to sit on them. The lower trims come with manually adjustable driver's seats while 10-way power-adjustable driver's seats are standard from the LT trim onwards. The wide measurements inside of the Crew Cab allow tall people to be comfortably rested inside the Silverado. The Silverado offers 40.1 inches of headroom and 43.4 inches of legroom, which is more than enough for tall adults to accommodate themselves comfortably.

The 2021 Silverado 1500 is a strong contention in terms of passenger space. The Ford F-150 is marginally bigger than the Silverado in terms of shoulder room, but the Chevy stands as a strong competition to Ford. The RAM 1500 offers less room in the rear row that can be a little frustrating to taller people. Some of the highlight interior features include:

  • Upgradable under-seat storage.
  • manually adjustable seats
  • multi-function steering wheel
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Cloth & leather upholstery
  • power-adjustable front seats
  • Auto-dimming rearview mirror
  • Wood trim on dash and door
  • Rubber Vinyl mats.

What’s there to keep you entertained?

Chevrolet has given the 2021 Silverado 1500 with a 7-inch touchscreen. The screen is not too crisp, it has a grainy display and a choppy interface. The color and the contrast are low but it manages to do the job quite well without feeling too out of date. Both wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported on an 8-inch touchscreen display from the LT trim onwards.

The 2021 Silverado 1500 comes equipped with a 6-speaker audio system. A 7-speaker Bose premium sound system is offered for the High Country trim but optional on the LTZ, RST, and LT Trail Boss trim. Some other infotainment features of the 2021 Silverado 1500 include:

  • Wireless charging
  • SiriusXM
  • HD radio
  • Voice recognition audio system
  • 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot
  • Navigation system
  • In-vehicle apps
  • USB ports
  • AM/FM stereo
Exterior
7.0/10

The 2021 Chevrolet Silverado design language makes sure it gets a great road presence, with its front design and the ready for any kind of job look. The front is distinguished with a massive grille with a black bar and the Chevrolet embossed in it. A pair of halogens in the headlamps gives an update to the exterior appearance from the front of the Crew Cab. The rear is also distinguished with LED lighting and large wheel arches for the big 17-inch wheels to fit in.

The RAM 1500's wheelbase is 3 inches less than the Silverado. This conveys that the RAM’s interior is less roomy. At 5,180 lbs, the Ford F-150 stands as the heaviest pickup truck on the list. On the other side, the GM cars sit very close to the ground at 7.9 inches. Some of the highlight exterior features are:

  • Chrome mirror caps
  • LED cargo area lighting
  • Power tailgate
  • HID headlamps
  • Dual-exhaust tips
  • Chrome running boards
  • Chrome grille
Safety
8.1/10

The Chevrolet Silverado comes with these features as standard and they would include Front and Rear Parking Assist, Proactive Rollover Avoidance System, Hill Start Assist, etc. The 2021 Silverado is sold with a list of safety features to provide safety and. Also, the six airbags provide the utmost protection during some kind of unfortunate incident. The highlights features offered in the Silverado include the following:

  • Proactive Rollover Avoidance System
  • Electronic Trailer Sway Control
  • Hill Start Assist
  • Hitch Guidance
  • Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert
  • Front and Rear Parking Assist
Competition
8.0/10

Chevrolet Silverado  vs Ford F-150

These two have always been rivals across different sizes, the Ford F-150 feels more refined and a bit more performance-oriented for a truck while driving and is actually utilitarian which helped in the truck getting really popular. These two are very closely matched in terms of performance, dimensions, etc. The Ford has always been more practical, comfortable and the favored car here but giving the Chevy a chance would not be a mistake and will not disappoint.

Ford F-150

Chevrolet Silverado  vs Toyota Tacoma

The Silverado is a far superior truck compared to the Tacoma and that is seen from the tables above. The Chevy truck is bigger, faster, more powerful, and more efficient than the Tacoma. The Toyota is very less practical than the Silverado. The Tacoma is a very affordable truck and the performance, comfort, dimensions figures keep up that price point. The Toyota seems like a truck for those people who are just moving into driving pickup trucks.

Toyota Tacoma

Chevrolet Silverado vs RAM 1500

These two cannot be seen as rivals since the RAM is a cousin of the Chevy and these two are closely related with each other in terms of power, performance, and the other factors except in terms of the dimensions. The RAM when against the Colorado and against the Silverado is completely different. When pitted against the Colorado the RAM dominates it and with a huge margin but, here it seems to have become more docile and very soft making the car less desirable.

RAM 1500

Final Verdict
8.2/10

The Chevrolet Silverado might be one of the underrated trucks in the segment and is a pretty good car. The Ford is not bad but is quite overrated and overshadows the very well-equipped, qualified, capable and great truck. Which is filled with features and has a great powertrain and engine options. This might be a great alternative in the pick-up truck segment.
