The new Chevy Silverado 1500 also gets better quality materials on the inside along with a mild redesign which enhances the overall appearance of the cabin while making it look fresh and more premium. The instrument cluster has also been upgraded to a 12.3-inch unit. The engine powering the 2022 Chevy Silverado Diesel Crew Cab is the same 3.0 L Inline-6 mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. The Silverado 1500 Diesel is offered in four different trim options and it competes with the leading competitors in the segment that are the RAM 1500 Crew Cab Diesel, Ford F-150 SuperCrew Diesel, and the GMC Sierra 1500 Crew Cab Diesel.

The base LT trim would be the ideal choice, as it comes with a great set of standard features. Since all the models feature the same diesel engine and offer the same amount of capabilities, the LT trim is sufficient in that regard. But you could opt for any of the available packages as even while being the base trim, the LT is offered with most of the available packages. It is possible to make this one more off-road friendly or more capable according to the options you choose.

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab Diesel Release Date

The 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 models are expected to debut in the spring of 2022.

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 diesel Crew Cab Engine and Performance

The engine powering the 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 diesel is a 3.0L Duramax Turbo-Diesel Inline-6 engine outputting 277 hp and 460 lb-ft of maximum power and torque. The powertrain comes paired with an electronically controlled 10-speed automatic transmission with overdrive, Driver Shift Control, and Tow/Haul mode that reduces shift cycling for better control and improved cooling when towing or hauling heavy loads. This engine’s prominent characteristic is not that it is the most powerful diesel power plant in the segment, but that it is extremely smooth, and mates to the advanced 10-speed automatic transmission, the powertrain of this Silverado 1500 diesel is supremely refined.

The 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 Diesel takes around 7.1 seconds to attain a speed of 60mph and tackles the quarter-mile in 15.4 seconds and those are admirable numbers. The truck handles pretty well and the ride quality although is on the rougher side, still is comfortable. It also comes with a maximum towing capacity of 9,500 lbs and a payload capacity of 1,870 lbs which even though is less than what the stronger V8 engine of the Silverado provides still are good figures showcasing the capability of that diesel engine. The Chevy Silverado is available with 4WD in all trims and to maximize the offroad capabilities, you could go for the Z71 Off-Road and Protection Package (4x4 models) that adds an off-road suspension, Hill Descent Control, a heavy-duty air filter, all-terrain tires for the LT, RST and LTZ trims while the top-end High Country trim doesn’t get this option.

The 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 Crew Cab Diesel is the most powerful option among all these diesel-powered trucks in the segment whereas the RAM 1500 provides a slightly higher amount of torque compared to the Chevy. The Chevy is also the fastest and while also being and highly refined machine with a buttery smooth engine under the hood makes the Chevy dominate in terms of performance. It strikes the perfect balance between power, torque, and refinement while also being slightly cheaper than the GMC Sierra with the same engine under the hood, thus emerging victorious.

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 diesel Crew Cab Fuel Economy

The fuel economy of the 2022 Chevy Silverado Diesel as expected is an efficient machine and the refinement and smoothness of the diesel engine do come into use and this Chevy does provide one of the best mpg figures in the segment. It delivers an impressive fuel economy of 23 mpg in the city, 33 on the highway, and a combined efficiency of 27 mpg. Combined with a 24.0-gallon fuel capacity the Silverado diesel could travel up to around 650 miles without refueling.

The Chevy provides a smidge more combined efficiency than the RAM but the RAM 1500 dominates in terms of range with a higher fuel capacity. The Ford is the least efficient machine here while the Sierra 1500 is in the third position below the RAM. Even with a larger fuel capacity, the F-150 diesel could not keep up with the Silverado in terms of range. The Chevy just topples all of the competitors, providing the absolute best fuel economy in the segment.

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 diesel Crew Cab Interior

The 2021 Chevy Silverado Diesel comes with a nice-looking interior that is not as luxurious as some of the competitors. But for 2022 Chevy has refreshed the whole look of the interior by adding two large high-resolution screens that change the whole appeal of the interior and the cabin now looks very much refreshed and updated. It does get high-quality materials inside the cabin and leather-appointed seating is also an option for all three trims. There is an ample amount of space inside the Silverado and the front row legroom provided inside this Chevy is class-leading while the second-row space is also adequate. There are two bed-length options available with the Silverado 1500 a short one with a 5.8 ft bed length and a longer 6.6-inch bed length.

From the LT trim and upwards, a convenience package is standard in the Silverado that adds dual-zone automatic climate control, 10-way power driver seat adjuster with power lumbar control, heated driver and front outboard passenger seats, lockable front center under-seat storage, heated leather-wrapped steering wheel and some other features and since the diesel powertrain is offered from the LT trim, this package is included in al the diesel modes. The seats are covered in cloth in the base trim while leather upholstery is optional and there are two color choices available which are Gideon and Jet Black. Going up to the LTZ trim, you get Perforated leather upholstery in the shades as standard while the top-end High Country adds Jet Black/Umber dual-tone color combo along with a new Real Wood trim and Ares leather seating surfaces.

The RAM 1500 comes with the most luxurious interior while the Ford F-150 also has a higher-quality interior compared to the Chevy. The 2021 GMC Sierra has a slightly more luxurious interior compared to the Chevy, but being the 2021 version, it is not at all as updated as the 2022 Silverado. The Silverado undoubtedly has the best-looking, most updated interior with the new large screens in place.

While comparing the space inside the cabins, the Chevy and GMC are more spacious in the front row while the RAM comes with more space in the second row. Overall, the RAM 1500 provides the best travel experience and the best ride quality making it the better choice in terms of interior quality and comfort. The following are the prominent interior features inside the 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500-

  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • 10-way power driver seat adjuster with power lumbar control
  • Heated leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • Front bucket seats with center floor console ventilated driver, and front passenger seats
  • 10-way power driver and front passenger seat
  • Heated driver, and front outboard passenger seats
  • Floor-mounted center console with cup holders, cell phone storage, power cord management, and hanging file folder capability

How intuitive is the car’s infotainment unit?

This is a segment where the 2022 Silverado got a major update. The whole look of the cabin has been redesigned with the addition of the new, larger, updated infotainment screen. The Silverado now comes with a 12.3-inch Driver Information Center and a 13.4-inch touchscreen infotainment screen. The touchscreen is very much responsive and easy to use while the audio system is a 7-speaker unit from Bose with a Richbass woofer that sounds good. There is also an option to equip a 15-inch multi-color Heads Up Display if you opt for the available Technology Package. The following are the standout infotainment features of the 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 Crew Cab Diesel-

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 diesel Crew Cab Exterior

The 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 comes with a redesigned front-end that looks very much updated while not looking too, thus striking a balance between futuristic looks and traditional aesthetics of a traditional Chevy pickup truck. The 2021 version of the Silverado looked sleeker while the redesign of the front end has made the 2022 iteration bolder and more serious. The stylish headlamps and the C-shaped DRLs integrated below it look impressive and accentuated the front portion.

The wheels in the Silverado 1500 are 17" bright silver-painted aluminum wheels in the base trim while the RST gets larger 18" bright silver-painted aluminum wheels, that are again upgraded to 20" polished-finish ones in the LTZ while the top-end High Country gets 20-inch painted-aluminum wheels with machined face and light argent pockets. The external appearance of the Silverado could be tweaked and altered by option for any of the available packages as there are many packages available for the same.

No doubt, the Chevy looks the best, followed by the F-150. The RAM looks a bit weird with its weird-looking design and the older-gen RAM 1500 looked much better compared to this one. The GMC looks flashy and higher variants are abundantly covered in chrome. The RAM is also the heaviest while the Ford is the lightest machine here and also offers the most ground clearance. The following are the prominent exterior features of the 2022 Silverado 1500 Crew Cab Diesel-

  • 20" Painted-Aluminum Wheels with Machined Face
  • Chrome assist steps
  • Chrome bars grille with high-gloss Black mesh and Chrome/bronze inserts
  • High-intensity LED reflector headlamps
  • Dual exhaust outlets with polished rectangular tips
  • LED daytime running lamps
  • Recovery hooks

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 diesel Crew Cab Safety

The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 features powertrain grade braking that automatically uses the engine and transmission to slow the truck to maintain desired speeds when driving downhill hence reducing brake wear and increasing vehicle control along with cruise grade braking that downshifts automatically to slow the truck as it drives downhill if it exceeds the cruise set speed by a certain amount. The 2022 Silverado has not been crash-tested by any of the agencies yet, but since the underpinning and chassis are the same as the 2021 version, the 4-star rating it got from NHTSA as well as the impressive ‘Good’ ratings from IIHS, could be taken into consideration. The following are some of the most important safety features in the 2022 Silverado Crew Cab Diesel-

  • Lane Change Alert
  • Side Blind Zone Alert
  • Front and Rear Park Assist
  • HD Rear Vision Camera
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert
  • Lane Keep Assist
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Theft-deterrent system: Unauthorized entry

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 diesel Crew Cab Competition

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab Diesel vs 2022 RAM 1500 Crew Cab Diesel

The 2022 RAM 1500 Crew Cab is the most luxurious option in this segment while also offering the best ride quality. But the RAM is not a looker from the outside while the interior is top-notch. The Silverado however, is faster, offers better efficiency, and is the more updated one inside out. But still, considering the impressive ride quality and superior-quality interior, the RAM is the better choice among these.

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab Diesel vs 2021 Ford F-150 Crew Cab Diesel

The 2021 Ford F-150 is a premium product offered with immense capabilities. It has been redesigned for 2021 and comes with a refreshed interior as well as an exterior. The powertrain is capable but the efficiency figures are not the best in the segment. The Chevy is faster and more efficient and the 2022 iteration comes very well updated on the inside. Also, the Chevy is the overall better-looking option making it the slightly better choice while both of them are impressive machines.

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab Diesel vs 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 Crew Cab Diesel

The Sierra 1500 is the fancier sibling of the Silverado but is it actually worth the extra price? The performance figures are very much similar while the Chevy offers a slightly better ride quality and a very marginal improvement in the fuel economy sector. The GMC doesn’t actually offer much for the added price, it’s not very much more luxurious than the Chevy. The refreshed Silverado also comes with a better infotainment unit while also being better-looking inside out.

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 diesel Crew Cab Final Verdict

The new Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab Diesel has gone through a mild redesign inside out. The front-end looks sleeker, bolder, and overall more beautiful while the interior looks extremely updated. The powertrain is very capable and the mpg figures, as well as range, are also superb. The interior quality and ride quality are not the best in the segment, but they are good. Overall the Chevy Silverado 1500 Crew Cab Diesel is an amazing option in the full-size pickup segment.
