Expert Review

CARHP Editorial August 26, 2019

Pickups have always been a favorite of American people. Whether it’s the masculine personality or practicality, Americans have always been in awe of these trucks. Like their attitude, these trucks can take on anything.

The latest offering by Chevy is a complete redesign from its predecessor and is built from the ground up on a new platform. This truck has served the Americans for over 2 decades and has been a favorite among many truckers and enthusiasts.

With the latest Silverado in the market, Chevy is offering a lot of flexibility in the configurations from cab layouts to bed size and engine & transmission.

Let’s dive into this truck to know more about it.

2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LD Features

The new Silverado comes with 8 variants, WT, CUSTOM, CUSTOM TRAIL BOSS, LT, RST, LTZ, LT TRAIL BOSS and HIGH COUNTRY, and starts at a base price of $33,695 and goes up to $54,495 for the topmost variant. It offers an option to choose from an array of engines ranging from 2.7L turbo to the most powerful 6.2 L V8 engine under the hood, with either 6-speed automatic or 8-speed automatic transmission.

The WT is the base trim and comes with all the standard features. The CUSTOM variant comes with some additional features like LED tail lamps and 20" silver painted alloy wheels. The CUSTOM TRAIL BOSS is a performance-oriented truck and comes with performance-oriented features like 2" factory suspension lift and Z71 off-road package. The base variant offers a powerful engine with standard features but lacks on styling and high-performance equipment that high-end variants offer.

We Recommend
To get a bang for your buck, we recommend the LT variant as it offers a powerful engine along with great infotainment system and some additional exterior features which make this car look striking and aggressive.

2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LD Engine

"The 5.3-liter V8 is certainly a strong motor, and braking performance is good in this segment, but the Silverado's responsiveness and handling leave something to be desired" - Edmunds

Engine and Transmission

The WT and CUSTOM variants come with 4.3L V6 mill producing 285 hp and 305 lb-ft of torque along with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The upper variants come with either, a 2.7L engine producing 310 hp and 348 lb-ft of torque along with 8-speed automatic transmission or a 5.3L V8 producing 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque along with the 8-speed automatic transmission. Chevrolet also offers an optional 6.2L V8 engine along with a 10-speed automatic transmission with higher variants.

The Silverado's 4.3L V6 feels quite lively, strong and powerful. It produces a good amount of power and gives out an extra burst of power when needed. The engine feels more powerful while going uphill and while in city, it feels balanced.

The Chevy offers a big 4.3L mill which produces 285 hp, but when compared to the F150 and Ram 1500, it seems to be a little underpowered as Ram's motor churns out 305 hp making it the leader in among its rivals. The Tacoma's optional 3.5L V6 motor produces the least amount of power placing it in the last place.

Acceleration

While these trucks are mainly used as a daily driver or for some utilitarian work, these trucks are not meant to be driven on tracks as a replacement for supercars.

Braking

The brake system feels quite responsive, all thanks to the well-tuned brake pedal. The brakes have a linear progression so the braking power depends on the amount of effort applied on the pedal.

Ride and Handling

All thanks to the big 4.3L mill, the ride feels powerful and gives strong vibes to the rider. The steering wheel is quite responsive but feels heavy when compared to the new Ford F-150. The quick return mechanism of the steering wheel makes the rider feel confident about the ride. At mid-corners, the body roll is quite significant which makes the Silverado unsettled, but the overall ride is smooth.

The brake pedal is well tuned, which makes the brake system very responsive. The linear progression of the brake pedal keeps the driver-focused. Kudos to Chevrolet for making this truck 450 pounds lighter than the previous generation, the ride doesn't feel laborious.

Towing Capacity

Typical towing capacity for the pickup trucks is taken somewhere around 9000 pounds. The Chevy bags the first place with the highest towing capacity of 9200 pounds and gives a tough competition to its rivals. Ram 1500 comes 2nd with 7730 pounds of towing capacity.

Seating and Comfort

The new Silverado offers a comfortable set of 2 rows which can accommodate up to 6 passengers. Chevrolet has provided cloth seats instead of leather seats but are comfortable due to minimal side bolstering. Both the front seats and the rear seats are quite roomy and comfortable. There is a generous amount of leg space in the rear seats along with the headroom. The rear also has AC vents and USB ports for charging.

To increase the comfort during long road trips, the upper trims get heated driver's seat. The cabin feels insulated and quiet compared to other trucks but slight engine noise does come inside. When at high speeds, the grunting sounds of the engine make their way inside the cabin. The ride is quite comfortable than the traditional trucks.

Infotainment

The base model comes with a standard instrument panel. The upper trims come bundled with an advanced instrument panel with either an 8" touchscreen or a crisp and vibrant 8" HD touchscreen. The dashboard is a big monolithic piece with numerous buttons on it.

The upper trims also come with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The dashboard feels quite intuitive yet familiar to use. The plastic used in the dashboard feels sturdy and not cheap.

Cargo space

The Chevy offers a generous amount of boot space (71.7 cu.ft.) which can easily fit 2 motocross bikes, therefore it takes the pole position, followed by the Ram 1500 with 61.5 cu.ft. The F-150 takes the third place with 52.8 cu.ft followed by the Tacoma finishing at the last with just 38 cu.ft. of cargo space.

Dimension and Weight

With the introduction of the new Silverado, Chevy has completely redesigned this truck from the bottom. It has beefed up the dimensions and also added a few features as standard. The WT features 17" steel wheels along with xenon headlamps, black front, and rear bumpers.

2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LD Competition

Chevrolet Silverado WT 4WD v/s Ford F150 XL SuperCrew 4x2

The Ford F-150 gave a tough competition to the new Silverado in almost all of the segments listed above. Performance wise and from a price point, the F-150 proves to be a great truck, but when Towing capacity, interior, and other aspects are considered, the Silverado takes the lead. Both the trucks are great but if you are more into camping and take a ton of stuff along with you, then the Silverado is for you and if you can let go of some extra towing capacity for great fuel efficiency, then the F-150 is a perfect choice.

Chevrolet Silverado WT 4WD v/s Ram 1500 Tradesman Quad Cab 4x4

The Ram 1500 is a truck for those who want a combination of performance and practicality. With some impressive figures in hand, the Ram takes the lead in terms of performance and fuel economy. The main reason why the Ram wins here is due to the presence of the extra horses and the extra miles with the same price tag as that of the Silverado.

Chevrolet Silverado WT 4WD v/s Toyota Tacoma SR 4WD

Chevrolet Silverado takes a clear victory when pitted against the Tacoma as in almost all of the segments, the Silverado came out to be a clear winner. The Tacoma feels quite underpowered, small and less spacious compared to its American rival. The Silverado here really gives a bang for the money spent on it, but if you are on a tight budget and can let go of all the extra figures, then the Tacoma is for you.

2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LD Final Verdict

With the latest iteration of this iconic truck, Chevrolet has introduced a redesigned trim list which gives a better insight into the truck and gives a powerful 4.3L V6 in its base variant. Chevy's latest offering is quite different from the previous generation which was miserably behind the times.

In this battle of bases, the new Silverado performed well though at some points its rivals gave it a tough competition, but overall it came out to be a perfect truck for a person who will go out on family trips or to the supermarket.

This brute comes with a ton of raw power and muscle and leaves most of its rivals in the dust. Despite its dimensions and power output, the truck has a flexible nature and can give a great performance irrespective of the situation. Overall this truck is perfect for a person who wants a perfect amalgamation of performance and practicality.
