The 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD continues as a carryover model but adds a new versatile Multi-Flex tailgate and 20-inch machined-face aluminum wheels with high gloss black accents to its standard features list. Chevy had introduced the current generation Silverado as a redesigned model in 2020, and it has continued since with minimal aesthetic additions and upgrades. The Regular Cab configuration is available with the base Work Truck and LT trims with a standard 98.27-inch long bed and 83.5 cubic feet of cargo space.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The official MSRP of the 2022 Silverado 2500 HD WT model with the standard 6.6-liter V8 and RWD layout starts from $35,300, and the LT model with the same powertrain and drivetrain combination starts from $39,400. Needless to say, the Chevy 2500HD faces some stiff competition from other heavy-duty pickup trucks, which includes, the Ford F250 Superduty, the RAM 2500, and the GMC Sierra 2500HD.

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Features

The 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Regular Cab is available with Work Truck and LT trim models. It gets the benefit of both the standard 6.6-liter V8 and the optional 6.6-liter Duramax turbo-diesel. The standard V8 comes mated to an aging 6-speed automatic transmission, whereas the Duramax engine gets the durable Allison 10-speed automatic transmission as the standard offering. Both Rear-Wheel Drive and All-wheel drive options are available, but the former is the standard drivetrain. Besides, the 2022 Chevy Silverado 2500HD gets the same list of exterior and interior features as was available with the 2021 model. And since the Regular cab is available with lower WT and LT trims, the features list is kept to a bare minimum. Standard features available with the 2022 Chevy Silverado 2500HD Work Truck models are, cloth upholstery and four-way manually adjustable front seats, air conditioning, a rearview camera, and a 3.5-inch driver information display, rear-seat reminder, and teen driver system to name a few.

The LT model is a bit luxurious compared to the WT trims, with an upgraded 4.2-inch information display, keyless entry, Cruise control, alongside a side standard 7-inch infotainment touchscreen system that supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, alongside a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot.

Despite being lower-trim models, the 2022 Chevy Silverado 2500HD WT and LT models come with stability and traction control, ABS and six airbags, and a rearview camera with Hitch guidance and a teen driver system. However, none of the 2500 Heavy-duty pickup trucks have been checked for crash test safety by either the NHTSA and IIHS.

Which trim should you buy?

If you’re buying the Silverado 2500HD with the Regular cab, then the options are quite simple. Between the Work Truck and LT model, the choice entirely depends upon your purpose. The LT model is a bit luxury-oriented, unlike the rugged Work Truck model that looks a bit bare minimum. So, if you’re in the market looking to buy a Silverado 2500HD, know your purpose first and then commit.

Release date

The 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD is expected to hit the dealerships by the fourth quarter of 2021.

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Engine and Performance

Under the hood, the 2022 ChevroletSilverado 2500HD Regular Cab comes with a standard 6.6-liter V8 gasoline engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. This powertrain whips out a maximum of 401 hp and 464 lb-ft of torque that is good for an impressive towing capacity of 17,370 lbs and. Power is sent via the standard rear-wheel-drive layout, but there’s an optional all-wheel-drive layout available as well.

But the most impressive engine has to be the 6.6-liter DURAMAX diesel engine that churns out 445 hp and a mighty 910 lb-ft of torque. This engine drives through a 10-speed Allison automatic transmission that sends power to either a standard rear-wheel drive or an optional all-wheel drivetrain. With so much torque on tap and coupled with the structural changes of the latest generation, the Silverado 2500HD can tow up to 36,000 lbs. However, both engines lack quick acceleration figures, but getting around town is a quick and easy affair. The braking performance of the Silverado 2500HD is designed to tow heavy loads. At the front, there are 14-inch rotors while the rear gets 14.1-inch rotors that are on par with its competitors. With this combination, the 2022 Silverado 2500HD RC takes 134 ft to come to a standstill from a speed of 60 mph.

The 400 hp power output from the standard V8 is not a slouch, and with the DURAMAX diesel engine’s 910 lb-ft of torque also sounds quite commendable, but that still does not transcend into any kind of athletic performance. The 6-speed heavy-weight automatic transmission system available with the standard V8 is quite dated and the number of gears limits the performance. Compared to that, the 10-Speed Allison Transmission system is far more refined and smooth. The truck-based 2022 Chevy Silverado 2500HD is quite capable when it comes to heavy-duty activities and the remarkable light steering feels for such a heavy vehicle also makes maneuvering around town panic-free as well. The Ford F-250 SuperDuty gets the biggest brakes in this segment with 14.3-inch rotors both at the front and the rear, and yet it stops after the Chevy at 166 ft from 60 mph. The GMC Sierra 2500HD is the mechanical twin of the Chevy, so we can expect a similar stopping distance from both. The second heaviest pick-up, the RAM 2500HD has average-sized brakes and it stops a bit ahead of the Chevy at 140 feet, which places it the second-best in the braking department. The standard 6.6-liter V8 is the same on both the Silverado 2500HD and the Sierra 2500HD with the same power and torque. However, when it comes to towing capacity the RAM 2500HD tows 19,680 lbs and that makes it a class leader in this segment. As is the case, acceleration figures are not that impressive among all the competitors as well, because of priority.

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Fuel Economy

Heavy-duty vehicles are usually exempted from official EPA fuel ratings, and pick-up trucks like the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD don’t particularly boast impressive mileage figures either. However, the unofficial claim is around 12 MPG for the gasoline V8, whereas the Diesel V8 can achieve a combined figure of 15 MPG. However, the Chevy Silverado gets a massive fuel tank at 36 gallons, and if calculated rightly then the Silverado 2500HD would offer about 550+ miles of driving range. With the diesel motor, the combined mileage is expected to be somewhere around 33mpg which is decent for the sheer size and capabilities of the truck.

Just like the Chevy Silverado 2500, its mechanical twin the GMC Sierra 2500HD also gets the same unofficial fuel economy figures. However, it is estimated that the Ford F-250 SuperDuty can do more than 16 MPG combined and almost 20 MPG on the highway. The RAM 2500 is clearly lacking in this regard for it produces the most power here at 410 hp, and that makes it quite a gas guzzler as well. Moreover, it also has a smaller 32-gallon gas tank that might make it the least practical offering in terms of driving range among the rivals here.

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Interior

The interior of the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Regular Cab feels quite simplistic but the overall quality of materials might feel a bit inferior to the rivals. The minimalist styling focuses more on functionality and this is reflected in the physical buttons and knobs that make it extremely easy to operate features. The front row bench seats can accommodate three passengers, for added seats there’s the Crew Cab and Double Cab. The base model WT and LT models come standard with cloth upholstery, four-way adjustable front seats. Aside from that, both the 82.3-inch standard bed and 98.3-inch long bed are available.

With just one row of seats, the cargo capacity comes down to the payload capacity that this pick-up truck can carry. The Silverado can carry the maximum load at 3986 lbs, followed by the GMC Sierra which falls short by about 140 lbs though. The Ford F-250 SuperDuty is the widest pickup with 66.7-inches of shoulder-room space for front-seat occupants. The RAM 2500 has the least amount of space inside when compared to the spacious rivals here yet it’s adequate for tall adults.

Standout interior features:

  • Cloth upholstery
  • Power windows and locks
  • Remote keyless entry
  • Single-zone automatic climate control
  • Vinyl upholstery
  • Manual door locks and windows

What’s there to keep you entertained?

Despite the old-school layout, the 2022 Chevy Silverado 2500HD gets a moderately standard and up-to-date infotainment system. The standard 7-inch touchscreen can be operated via physical knobs. Adding to that, the 2022 Chevy Silverado 2500HD gets both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard coupled to a two-speaker sound system, and a 4G LTE WiFi hotspot available with the LT trim. For $100, both WT and LT models can get a 3-month trial subscription to SiriusXM.

Standout infotainment features:

  • 7-inch touchscreen display
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
  • Bluetooth
  • Satellite radio
  • MP3 player
  • Auxiliary Audio Input
  • Wi-Fi hotspot(optional)

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Exterior

The exterior design of the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Regular Cab will remain more or less the same. At a glance, the big and chunky design of the Chevy Silverado is very iconoclast and the particularly aggressive front fascia makes it look like an imposing pick-up truck. Both Silverado WT and LT models ride on 17” steel silver wheels, but for $ 350 it can be upgraded to 17” aluminum wheels, or for $ 300 to 18” steel silver painted wheels. The new Multi-Flex tailgate is now also available as standard on the LT and WT models. The six-function tailgating design will help improve loading and unloading and access to the cargo. In addition, there are many small tweaks available for a few extra dollars that upgrade the exterior look in the form of trim nameplated, Black bowtie emblem, extra skid plates, and polished exhaust tips.

Except for the RAM, all three- GMC Sierra 2500HD Regular Cab, Ford F-250, and the Chevy Silverado sit on the same 141.6-inch sized wheelbase. But the RAM 2500HD has the most ground clearance at 13.1-inches, and yet both the Silverado and Sierra are taller vehicles with 81.8-inches of height. All the rivals lack the bold and brawny appeal of the Silverado owing to its huge two-part front grille design and sizable headlamp units.

Standout exterior features:

  • Black bumpers and exterior trim
  • Locking tailgate
  • Trailering mirrors and equipment
  • Trailer brake controller
  • Chrome bumpers
  • Low-effort tailgate(optional)

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Safety

Given that this is a workhorse, the Silverado 2500HD is exempt from federal crash test results. However, the standard safety features available with the Silverado 2500HD are, stability and traction control, ABS, and six airbags. In addition, the Work Truck model gets a WT Safety Package that adds front and rear parking assist, lane-change alert, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Whereas, for $615, the LT model can be equipped with the Safety Confidence Package that includes Cruise Control, Forward Collision Alert, and Automatic Emergency braking.

Standout safety features:

  • Lane Departure Warning with Lane Keeping Assist
  • Forward Collision Warning with Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Pedestrian Detection System
  • High Tensile Steel Architecture

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Competition

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Regular Cab vs 2022 Ford F-250 Super Duty Regular Cab

Despite the Chevrolet Silverado 2500’s optional DURAMAX diesel engine that produces an impressive 910 lb-ft of torque, the F-250 SuperDuty Regular Cab is much more potent as its diesel engine produces 474 hp and a whopping 1,050 lb-ft of torque. That enables the Ford F-250 to boast a class-leading 22,800 lbs of towing capacity. But unlike the Chevy Silverado, the 2022 Ford F-250 carries over the same design that was introduced in 2017. And this is where the Chevy Silverado shines with a more modern and recent exterior styling.

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Regular Cab vs 2022 RAM 2500 Regular Cab

Both the RAM 2500 Regular Cab and Chevrolet Silverado have undergone an extensive redesign, but the RAM 2500 reigns over the Silverado with a superior towing capacity of 19,680 lbs, compared to Chevy’s 18,500 lbs. Besides, both have similar cabin space and cargo bed options, but the Silverado ends up being a bit more spacious.

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Regular Cab vs 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD Regular Cab

The 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD continues to share the same mechanical elements which include the engine and platform, as available with the Silverado 2500HD. Both exhibit similar flashy exteriors with bright chrome exhibits. But the Chevy Silverado slots in as the more advanced pick-up than the Sierra.

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Final Verdict

The 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD carries over from the outgoing model with very little change, and the newly standardized multi-flex tailgate just makes this pick-up all the more versatile. Since the Regular cab is available with the base Work Truck and LT trim model, it would be safe to say that in between $35,000 to $45,000, the 2022 Chevy Silverado can be a safe choice, for its focus is on functionality, unlike the Ford which is performance. So, if you’re in the market looking for a heavy-duty pick-up truck that will be a perfect daily commuter, then the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Regular Cab should be in your garage.
