2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

Silverado has been the lone standing, trust-worthy pick-up truck from Chevrolet. It’s the bread and butter workhorse for anyone who needs towing, moving or hauling and can even be a decent family car with that quite spacious double cab.

Ford F-250 poses a good fight to Silverado and is in fact one of the one pick-up to beat. Nissan Titan and RAM 2500 Tradesman are other competitors.

2500HD is an elder brother to Silverado 2500 with almost same design cues but being able to carry and haul much more. It comes with a standard 6-litre V8 petrol producing 360 horses and 380 lb-ft of torque and an optional 6.6-litre V8 diesel that does 445 hp and produces an earth pulling 910 lb-ft of torque.

2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab Engine

7.4/10

Heavy duty pickups like the Chevy Silverado HD have power like a ballistic missile. Unfortunately, they tend to ride and handle like them too.-The Car Connection

Engine and Transmission

Silverado is offered with three engines and range being so extensive it can be used for various purposes as per the workload. A 6-litre petrol powered V8 producing 360 horses and 380 lb-ft. The same engine with the flex fuel CNG produces a little less power at 301 horses and 333 lb-ft of torque. For the heavier workload there's a turbo diesel Duramax 6.6L engine producing 445hp and 910 lb-ft of torque.

Standard Vortec petrol engine option is able to produce 14,500 pounds on the tow hook on the rear and is able to pull 14,800 pounds on its fifth wheel. The options further impresses with 20,000 pounds on the tow hitch and 23,000 pounds on its fifth wheel.

Ford F-250 is a better option with new engine altogether and its body shell is made from aluminum. The only drawback with Ford is it doesn't have such an engine option list the Silverado has. Titan and RAM 2500 here are just a tad bit more powerful than Silverodo here. But Chevrolet still gets into lead becasuse of the torque heavy-duramax engine churning out 910 lb ft.

Acceleration

Duramax 6.6-litre paired with Silverado 2500HD pulls out great off the start. The Duramax diesel engine can get the Silverado a sub-7 second time to 60mph and it later feels very slow after that. The standard Vortec 6-litre engine equipped truck hits 60mph at 7.4 seconds. It can cruise at rather good speeds on freeway.

Nissan being a lighter vehicle hit 60 mph at 6 second flat, all the other competitors follow it on a drag. Silverado takes one more second and RAM plus F-250 take around 8.5 seconds to reach 60 mph.

Braking

Braking feel is not that great, the feedback hence doesn't infuse much confidence. On heavy braking, the pedal gets depressed right down till the bottom and that might create some rather nervous moments. The braking distances gets long due to heavy weight and brakes are not so impressive in the city. In slow moving traffic and parking speeds they work just right.

The RAM 2500HD with the most weight is still able to stop in 135.5 feet is a very good number to come from a pickup truck. Nissan ha the best stopping capability and that's because of the its less weight. Silverado stops in 138 ft which is a decent stopping distance for heavy duty truck.

Ride & Handling

Truck is a little bouncy and unsure on hint of bumps and this is better in heavier version but in 2500 it tends to get irritating. As the truck is loaded up with heavy payload it feels much better in ride.

Silverado having such big size and such a great capability to steer is surprise. On slow speeds the truck is rather easy to maneuver but as it reaches higher speeds the body roll start to creep in. Steering with low ratio help in reducing the turning radius when in parking lots and tight spaces.

Maximum Towing capacity

Silverado steps ahead here and clearly tells us why it's still the one of the top selling pickup trucks. A towing capacity of 11390 lbs. and even more if it's a gooseneck wheel tow.

Ford can tow more or less the same as Chevrolet here for what it can tow. Titan is far less than American brutes here with RAM somewhere tows somewhere in between because of its less refined 5.7L engine.

Payload Capacity

The capacity of carrying load on the Silverado is rather great. A capability of loading 3435 pounds makes it the quintessential heavy duty. With a little less torque figure but how this Chevrolet makes use of the same torque but on a much lower rpm is impressive. The low down torque helps pull Silverado out of most situations even when loaded.

A spacious front seat, a straightforward interior layout, and a luxurious interior are big pluses for the Silverado HD.-Car and Driver

Seating and Comfort

The interiors are basic and feels just good for a workaholic. Most of the space is covered in black plastics and is very bland. The interiors are still unchanged for this year and it's getting long in tooth for Chevrolet. Even with such a drawback it still has rather good room inside that can seat 3.

Sliverado being being a little tighter in size and dimension wise than Ford, still feels the roomiest inside when compared to all others. The stiff suspension is rather too crashy on smallest of undulations unless the truck hauls some serious payload.

Infotainment System

Chevrolet MyLink infotainment comes with either 7-inch or 8-inch touchscreen both having some rather serious controls. Overall the system feels quite intuitive and has an attractive design layout.

Bed Dimensions

Pick-up is essentially called a pick-up with its long bed behind. Everyone now in the competition tries to stretch it to the limit the chassis can handle. Over years the bed options have increased and size is as expansive as it can get. Silverado with its Crew still is left with 97.7 inches of bed length.

The face of the truck is menacing and butch looking. The long kept, signature dual-step headlight still appears in its language and both ends are connected by centrally placed chrome surrounding the big Chevrolet bow-tie logo. The side profile of the truck is daunting and high.

2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab Competition

Chevrolet Silverado 2500 Vs. Nissan Titan

Nissan is the reliable Japanese counterpart to the American Heavy weights here. With its dimensions it's more suitable as a family car with moderate usage of it as a utility vehicle. What impresses us is the re-assuring reliability it induces in you. So, it can make for a very good pick-up if its duties are just basic utility and family getaways. What also goes in favor of it is lighter weight which makes it eased out on fuel consumption.

The only thing that goes against the Titan is when it is considered as a heavy-duty workhorse. Which it is not and you should be rather looking out for a Ford and Chevrolet in this case.

Chevrolet Silverado 2500 Vs. RAM 2500

RAM has been long loved by the people because of its trust worthiness and what it provides in options and the list is long. Playing such an important role in pick-up market RAM now struggles here with a little-long-in-tooth Cummins derived diesel engine. Where Chevrolet and Ford has got ahead with their new and much more refined engines, RAM still has to step up.

Silverado is the no-brainer choice with as far as 3 engine and overall being better equipped than RAM.

Chevrolet Silverado 2500 Vs. Ford F-250 Super Duty

Ford has been the leader when it comes to their F-range of pick-up trucks and with continuous improvements year-over-year. It still is able to be a deck above everyone in the pickup market. In some aspects it trumps Chevrolet like it's a simple card game and we can probably tell to step in F-250 and drive-off.

But, Chevrolet covers the serious side of Heavy-Duty pickups, offering three engine options, hence different power options so you choose the best hauler that suits you. It depends how you want to use it as.

2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab Final Verdict

Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab is the work mammoth when it comes to heavy duties and with such engine options it impresses even further. Being able to tow, haul heavy and still carry 6 in its Double Cab in comfort, it is only a pro. This brute is a no-brainer buy if utility is your first concern and its family by the evening. On the other hand if this priority list is opposite we would suggest you to also visit a Ford Dealership.
