Chevrolet is a renounced automaker and it has been known for manufacturing heavy-duty vehicles that can be used in rough environments without any hiccups. One of these heavy-duty off-roaders is a Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab, it’s just more than the normal Silverado as this vehicle has a better hauling capacity and bold looks that can’t be found in the Chevrolet garage. The 2500HD tall stance and sturdy design language certainly provide the king of the road attitude.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

Chevrolet redesign the Silverado 2500HD lineup in the 2020 manufacturing year and granted it more sharp front headlights and convenience features like extended trailer mirrors, surround camera system, trailer steps, and some extra claddings. All these major upgrades improved the overall styling of the vehicle. The upcoming 2022 version follows the same ideology and shares the corresponding powertrain & transmission but there are some minor tweaks done on the vehicle as per the customer’s feedback.

Features

Chevrolet offers 2022 Silverado 2500HD in three different body styles namely: Crew Cab, Regular Cab, and Double Cab. All three body styles have five different trim levels that start with the base trim WT (Work Truck), Custom, LT, LTZ, and the High Country. Chevrolet has integrated the Silverado 2500HD with the same two different 2021 6.6-L, V8 turbo diesel, and the 6.6-L, V8 gas engines. The diesel powertrain is paired with the 10-speed automatic gearbox and is available with either RWD or 4WD drivetrain options and one more thing is that the Silverado 2500HD features two beds options, a standard bed, and a long bed. Other than that, all the features are listed below in the table.

We Recommend

Up to LTZ trim level, the Silverado 2500HD is available in every configuration, drivetrain, and engine option. Out of the trims mentioned in the table above LT variant seems the best option as it has all the basic features like fabric upholstery, single-zone air conditioning, rear a/c vents, rear-view camera, tire pressure monitoring control, and some pretty amazing safety tech. Not only that it also looks much better than its lower trim and completely justifies its price tag.

We Release

The 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD now can be booked through the official website of Chevrolet and customers can choose every particular detail of the vehicle of their choice. One can even select the packages available with the selected vehicle and the features he/she wants but one thing should be noted that High Country trim is available in the 4WD drive option only.

Engine and Performance

8.0/10

Every trim of Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab comes equipped with the standard 6.6-liter, V8 gas engine which churns out a total power of 401hp and 464 lb-ft of torque but tonight’s star is the more powerful 6.6-liter Duramax diesel engine which produces 44 more horsepower than the gasoline one and 910 lb-ft of torque, which is way more than the gasoline one. This much amount of torque grants the vehicle an impressive towing capacity.

Usually, Chevrolet Silverado gets a 6-speed automatic transmission with the 6.6-L, V8 gasoline but that gearbox would bottleneck the performance of the diesel powerhouse. So to make up for the 6.6-L, turbo V8 diesel Chevrolet integrated the diesel engine with the 10-speed Allison automatic gearbox. Chevrolet also provides the Crew Cab with RWD and the 4WD system, and with that engine and transmission combination, Silverado can accelerate from standstill to 60 mph within just 7.9 seconds and run a quarter-mile sprint in 17.5 seconds. Those are some quite good numbers for such a heavy truck.

All four trucks are RWD and have a 10-speed automatic transmission but Chevrolethere isn’t the most powerful one as that title goes to the Ford F-250 with the 475 hp and 1050 lb-ft of torque. With those power figures, Ford excels on the sheet in 0 to 60 acceleration and quarter-mile timing. After Ford Chevrolet and GMC share the same figures and engine but their performance somehow varies from each other, Chevrolet here performs slightly better than the GMC.

Fuel Economy

9.0/10

One big problem of owning a truck is that its low fuel economy due to the fuel-guzzling powerhouse and the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab will be no different. It surely runs on diesel and shares the same powertrain as the 2021 version that’s why it’ll claim the same fuel figures, like 14 mpg in the city driving, 19 mpg on the straight highways, and 17 mpg under the combined conditions. At least it has a decent fuel tank capacity of 36.2 gallons as per its size which grants it the range of 687.8 miles on the highways.

Out of all four trucks, Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab seems to claim more than the other three. GMC Sierra 2500HD has a powertrain which leads it to second place with slightly less fuel economy than Chevrolet but the most interesting thing about GMC is its biggest in the segment fuel tank with 38.1 gallons of capacity which boosts its range to 723.9 miles on the highways. The Ford F-250 holds itself together and manages to claim fuel economy closer to the Chevrolet but RAM 2500 holds terribly against the competition.

Interior

8.0/10

The 2022 Chevy Silverado 2500HD looks exactly the same as the 2021 version and it doesn’t matter with which engine and transmission combination you go with, the overall styling of the cabin would still be the same. So let’s explore the cabin of this vehicle, in the front row the lower trims get the fabric upholstery seats with 4-way manual adjustable features. One can change the driving modes with the controls provided on the left side of the steering wheel, some electronic controls for foglights, cargo lights, puddle lamps, and dimmer for the panel is also situated on the left side of the steering wheel.

On the LT trim, the vehicle gets the heated steering wheel with the cruise and audio-mounted controls. Most of the cabin is covered with soft-touch material but one can find some rough plastic here and there. On the right side of the cabin there are two gloves boxes big enough to carry small stuff and some papers but for better storage consider opting for the big console bin. The central storage space also acts as the armrest where the can also rest as well and when you open it, the massive space will surprise you.

Other than that, the front seats are comfy and super spacious even for the super tall passengers. On the rear row, there are three headrests and the floor hump is little to none which means that three passengers can fit easily on the rear row but the upright position makes them uncomfortable on long trips. Chevrolet also provides the rear A/c vents and USB-C/A power ports, if fabric seats are not your style then consider going with the High Country trim level.

As per the data mentioned in the table above, every vehicle has an occupancy of 5 people. Amongst all four vehicles, the Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab and GMC Sierra seem the most spacious in the front row whereas Ford F-250 lacks head and the RAM 2500 does poorly in this department. When it comes to the second-row seats Ford is a clear choice but Chevrolet isn’t much behind. Some highlights of the interior features are:

  • Fabric upholstery on lower trims
  • Leather upholstery on upper trims
  • Tilt-adjustable steering wheel
  • Single-zone air conditioning on lower trims
  • Dual-zone climate control on LTZ & High Country
  • Power adjustable and heated seats on upper trims
  • The heated steering wheel on upper trims
  • Keyless ignition

How intuitive is the infotainment system?

The lower trim of the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab is available in the market with some basic entertainment & information delivering technology like a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment display with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, 6-speaker audio system with Bluetooth audio streaming for 2 active devices, and the command. All these features are enough to make one’s ride enjoyable but if someone needs more than that, then the upper trim comes equipped with the 8-inch HD color touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, enhanced voice recognition, additional memory for in-vehicle apps, and much more. Some main highlights of the infotainment tech of 2022 Chevy Silverado 2500HD are;

  • 8” HD color touchscreen display
  • AM/FM stereo
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay & Android Auto smartphone integration
  • An enhanced voice recognition system
  • Additional memory for in-vehicle apps
  • Sirius XM radio
  •  HD radio
  • Bose 7-speaker system with woofer
  • Steering mounted audio controls
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • 4G LTE wi-fi hotspots capable

Exterior

8.5/10

Chevrolet gave the Silverado 2500HD a refreshed look back in 2020 and the exterior styling will be in trend for the 2022 version. The vehicle will still be sturdy and macho yet retain the modern front fascia. The exterior has overall boxy design language from front to rear, in the front, the grille is divided into two sections by the big Chevrolet badging in the middle. The upper part has a small grille opening with mean-looking DRLs with integrated turn indicators, the bigger grille with a trim badge covering the front-middle area. There are two hooks with square-shaped foglamps that are also mentioned at the front bottom. The lower trim gets the halogen DRLs, fog lamps, head & tail lights whereas the upper trim is decorated with the LED lights from inside-out.

The lower trims get the black front and rear bumpers whereas mid-level trim and upper trim get the chrome & body-colored bumpers respectively. The Crew Cab is available in two configurations namely: the standard bed and the Long bed, the difference between them is 16 inches besides that everything is similar. On the side profile, the base trim comes factory-fitted 17-inch steel painted silver wheels and the High Country trim gets the 20-inch 16-spoke polished aluminum wheels with the 6-inch chrome side assist steps. Everything is black with the Work Truck such as black outside vertical trailering mirrors & black door handles, every trim gets a trailer step as standard. From the rear side, it radiates like a typical pick-up truck manual & locking tailgate.

The curb weight of Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD and GMC Sierra 2500HD is almost the same, it may be due to the same Duramax engine and 10-speed automatic. Other than that, their dimensions are also similar to one another and the biggest in the segment too, but their wheelbase is 4-inch shorter than the Ford F-250 which allows them better maneuverability over Ford. Ford may be close to Chevy in terms of dimensions but it has 8.2 inches of ground clearance which is the lowest in the segment. Some highlights of exterior features are:

  • 20-inch polished 16-spoke aluminum-alloy wheels
  • Body-colored front & rear bumpers
  • LED headlights with LED DRLs

Safety

8.0/10

The details of the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD are still unknown as the vehicle hasn’t been crash-tested yet by the NHTSA nor by the IIHS, so nothing can be said about the 2022 safety ratings. But the 2019 Silverado 1500 earned the 4-star rating in the overall crash test by the NHTSA and Chevrolet used the same platform and componentry to build the 2021/2022 Silverado 2500HD, that statement might put those minds ease who are searching for some ratings. Besides the safety ratings, the base trim Work Truck is loaded with basic features such as DRLs with automatic exterior lamps, hill start assist, rearview camera, tire pressure monitoring system, and some more. All the features on the upper trim are mentioned below:

  • Antilock braking system
  • StabiliTrak stability control
  • Proactive roll avoidance
  • Traction control
  • Electronic trailer-sway control
  • Hill-start assist
  • Dual-stage frontal airbags
  • Seat-mounted side-impact airbags for driver
  • Front & rear ultrasonic parking sensors
  • HD surround vision with two trailer view camera
  • Bed view camera
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Hitch Guidance with hitch view
  • Lane change alert with side blind zone alert
  • Tire pressure monitoring system

Competition

8.0/10

Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab Vs Ford F-250 SuperDuty SuperCrew Diesel

The Ford F-250 is definitely more powerful than the Chevy Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab which gives it a certain advantage in towing capacity and grants it the ability to perform better on off-roading adventures. Chevy is also not much behind as its slightly shorter exterior dimensions make it easy to maneuver in tight conditions and plus it has a superior interior space than the Ford F-250. Ford has a sturdy and strong stance whereas chevy looks more modern & stylish.

Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab Vs RAM 2500 Crew Cab Diesel

The Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD is the clear winner here with the stronger and much powerful engine, maybe both vehicles come with the 10-speed automatic but Chevy has the Allison gearbox. The exterior dimensions of RAM are way shorter than that of Chevy which may give it better handling on curves and in tight traffic conditions but it also strips away a lot of cabin space. Even with the less performance engine, RAM seems to struggle a bit a claim a better fuel economy.

Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab Vs GMC Sierra 2500HD Crew Cab Diesel

Both GMC Sierra 2500HD and Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD shares a similar powertrain with even performance and one can notice just a slight difference in their performance figure but still, GMC claims a little fewer fuel numbers which might be a case of the heavy body and bigger fuel tank. Other than that, they have exactly the same interior and exterior dimensions, So in terms of space they are evenly matched, and when it comes to the exterior looks, GMC has bulky and macho front facia whereas Chevrolet gets a clean modern exterior styling.

Final Verdict

Chevrolet is a great and reliable brand and leading the market with its heavy-duty vehicles, Silverado is one of the best trucks manufactured by Chevrolet which offers modern technology, two different powertrains, and a 10-speed Allison automatic transmission with its diesel engine. As per the specs they made this vehicle to handle a lot of abuse and also for off-roading it gets a 10.1-inch of ground clearance so clearing some rough patches won’t be a problem for it. Chevy has also included so many trim levels in its Silverado 2500HD and loaded the truck with basic to modern tech for every type of customer. The 2022 Chevy Silverado 2500HD has little to no upgrades but chevy might provide it with some software updates and better fuel efficiency,
