7.4/10
"The 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD, a heavy-duty pickup truck that casts an enormous 21.5-foot-long shadow and takes up eight feet of lane width in its largest and widest configuration" -Caranddriver

In the engine department, Chevy Silverado has 2 Choices, A standard 6.0 L V8 gasoline engine producing 360-hp and 6.6-liter Duramax turbo-diesel with 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet of torque. The diesel has a massive 23,300 pounds towing capacity and a maximum payload of 7153 pounds. The gasoline engine comes mated to a six-speed automatic while the diesel comes exclusively with an Allison six-speed automatic. Both the automatics works well both handling city duties and heavy towing.

The engine feels powerful while towing heavyweights. However, consider the similarly priced competition and the towing capacity of the Silverado will feel inadequate. The Ford F-350 Super Duty and Ram 3500 trucks are able to tow up to 31,300 and 30,240 pounds.

Acceleration

The 2017 Chevy Silverado is surprisingly quick. The massive torque from the 6.0L V-8 helps the truck move quickly off-the-line. Negating its huge size, 0 to 60 mph takes only 6.7 seconds. Even when we compare Silverado to its competition it' s beaten by just 4 seconds for the first place.

Braking and Handling

One thing that set the 2017 Silverado apart from its rivals the way it handles. The refinement levels are great and so is the handling. Body roll is minimal and the truck handles corners very gracefully. Even for a dual-rear-wheel setup, the turning is predictable,

Stopping this mammoth sized truck is a breeze, all thanks to the progressive brakes. The strong brake pads inspire confidence in bringing the truck to a halt. 70-0mph can take up to 199ft.

Off-Roading Capabilities

These heavy-duty pickups are not meant for off-roading. Although, this 2017 Silverado can handle a lot. Its highly maneuverable thanks to the new digital steering assist. The all-wheel-drive system comes in handy when doing the off-roading duties. There is adequate grip from the all-terrain tires as well.

Towing Capacity

When we consider the 2017 Silverado' s towing capacity as a whole it is sufficient at 13000 lbs for the base engine. However, when we compare it to similarly priced competition, it feels quite underpowered with the ford F-350 leading the pack with 18000 lbs towing capacity.

2017 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Crew Cab Fuel Economy

6.3/10

Heavy-duty trucks are not rated for fuel economy. It' s obvious they are going to massively low because they are bought for the work they are meant to do not for the pleasure they provide. Said that the Chevy Silverado' s fuel economy has not been officially tested, but it returns a combined fuel economy of 13mpg.

2017 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Crew Cab Interior

Interior Seating and Comfort

Getting in and out from the Silverado is easy thanks to the side step assist. The front seats are huge and accommodating. The driving position is upright and comfortable with all the controls within reach. The rear seats in the extended cab are too tight and you would not love to spend too much time there. So, if you are someone who often goes out on family trips then opt for the Crew cab.

2017 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Crew Cab Competition

Chevrolet Silverado 3500-HD Vs GMC Sierra 3500-HD

The Chevy Silverado 3500-HD and the GMC Sierra 3500-HD are corporate cousins. They get the same engines, same transmission, and almost same equipment levels. Looks is a personal preference, so it is up to you which cars look more appealing.

Chevrolet Silverado 3500-HD Vs RAM 3500-HD

The 2017 RAM 3500 has a lower price than 2017 Silverado 3500-HD. Despite that, it offers 3 more horses and a better towing capacity. On the equipment levels the RAM 3500 score better with Uconnect infotainment system. So, overall RAM 3500 must be considered before buying the Silverado 3500-HD

Chevrolet Silverado 3500-HD Vs Ford F-350

Ford brought the concept of pickup trucks as daily drivers to masses. In the past ford has given us some benchmark pickups. The F-350 from Ford' s stable is no different. The ford 350 is cheaper and more powerful in the lower trims.

On the safety and reliability front ford F-350 scores better than the Chevy Silverado 3500, the top trims of the Ford F-350 have longer feature list than the Chevy Silverado 3500-HD. So,the Ford F-350 makes a strong case for itself and becomes hard to ignore.

2017 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Crew Cab Final Verdict

The 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 3500-HD is much more than just a pickup truck. Even the base variant is powerful enough to handle tough towing duties. And for those who want more, there' s an optional diesel with great levels of refinements and power. Even on the inside, the car feels upmarket and plush. The equipment levels are on-par with the rivals. Middle variants are value for money, especially with the optional packages. However, the Silverado lags behind on the safety front, and when you consider its rivals in terms of power and towing capacity, they give more by taking less. Basically, as a whole Ford F-350 and RAM 3500 are a better package.
