The 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD diesel Crew Cab is available in four trims namely the WT, LT, LTZ, and High Country. The price for the WT trim starts at $52,100 and goes up to $75,050 for the top-of-the-line High Country trim. The WT trim is mainly for commercial use and does not come with many comfort features. As you climb up the trim ladder, more car-like features become a prominent part of the cabin. The High Country trim is the top-of-the-line heavy-duty truck from Chevrolet and boasts of superior creature comforts. 

We Recommend 

We would recommend the LT trim considering its list of features and pricing. It offers many desirable features of the base WT trim and is only diminutively higher priced. Some features like steering wheel-mounted controls, cruise control, climate control, keyless entry, satellite radio, and an 8-inch infotainment screen are offered as standard. On top of it, we would like to add the Convenience Package which will further spec up the LT trim with features like power-adjustable seats, cargo LED lighting and a heated steering wheel. If you are more safety conscious then you can opt for the Safety Package as well which will add active safety features like front and rear park assist rear cross-traffic alert and blind-spot monitoring system.

The reservations for the 2022 model are open on the official website or you can walk into your nearest dealer. The deliveries are expected to begin in the third quarter of 2021.

The 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD diesel Crew Cab is equipped with a 6.6L Duramax diesel engine producing 445 hp and 910 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission from Allison. The transmission is electronically controlled with overdrive for smoother shifting. It also comes with a tow/haul mode for better control and reduced shifting when hauling heavy loads to improve the transmission cooling efficiency. All the trims except the High Country trim come with rear-wheel-drive configuration as standard and all-wheel drive is optional. One can also opt for dual rear-wheel-drive for higher payload capacity depending upon your usage scenario. 

The Duramax diesel engine is smooth and reliable as well. It performs just as intended and its ginormous torque is sufficient for your hauling needs. It can tow up to 36,000 pounds which is very commendable. The Silverado 3500HD Crew Cab can do a 0-60 mph sprint in about 7.4 seconds which is quite good for a truck of its size and ability. It also comes with an efficient braking system which is very much necessary when towing heavy loads. The steering lacks adequate feedback and accuracy and fails to inspire confidence over twisty roads despite having an electric-assist system. The suspension is tuned for comfort and it does not disappoint under most driving conditions. 

The GM twins are equipped with the smaller engines of the lot. However, they offer much better towing capacity as compared to others. The GM twins are expected to perform very similarly as they are based on the same platform. The RAM 3500 is equipped with a larger engine from Cummins and offers similar performance as the GM twins. As heavy-duty trucks are made for hauling, performance hardly matters. It is the torque output that matters the most for the seamless hauling of heavy loads. 

All trucks are equipped with big bore diesel engines and produce enormous torque. Obviously, none of them offer satisfactory fuel efficiency. However, fuel efficiency must not be a matter of concern for most in this segment. Also, EPA has not given any official ratings for these trucks. So, by taking cues from 2021 customer reports and past data we estimate that the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD diesel Crew Cab might offer about 13 mpg in the city, 18 mpg on the highway, and 15mpg in combined driving conditions. With a fuel tank capacity of 36 gallons, it can travel about 468 miles in the city, 648 miles on the highway, and 540 miles in mixed driving conditions.

The Ford F-350 is slightly more fuel-efficient than other trucks in the comparison averaging 17 MPG. It is also equipped with a 34-gallon fuel tank and offers a higher range than its competitors, followed by the GM twins and the RAM 3500 diesel Crew Cab. Both the GM twins share their platform and are expected to offer an identical range as well. The RAM 3500 is equipped with a smaller fuel tank of 32 gallons and might offer just 512 miles of range on a full tank of gas.

The 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD diesel Crew Cab will continue to offer desirable interior features. However, most of the creature comforts are reserved for higher trims only. The WT is designed mainly for commercial use only while High Country is the most luxurious crew cab from Chevrolet. It can accommodate up to six passengers in its cabin. The dashboard is laid out quite well in an ergonomic fashion and all the controls are within the reach of the front passengers. 

The crew cab version comes with a longer wheelbase and shorter cargo bed. As a result, passenger space is good. The seats are comfortable and offer decent thigh support as well. The quality of materials inside the cabin is good but can’t match the RAM 3500’s interior design and quality. While the lower trims do offer features like a 4-way adjustable driver and passenger seat, 4.2-inch color driver information center, 40/20/40 split front bench seat, assist handles, single-zone climate control a/c, etc. 

But we are more interested in features like dual-zone climate control system, power-adjustable front seats, larger driver information center screen, heated and ventilated front seats, heated steering wheel, heads-up display, and premium audio system, which are available with the higher trims or as a part of the optional package. The Silverado offers many cubby storage spaces inside the cabin and some trims offer a storage compartment under the back seat as well for better practicality.

All the trucks can accommodate up to six passengers and offer very similar interior dimensions. The GMC Sierra 3500HD Crew Cab is based on the same platform as the Chevrolet and hence both trucks share identical interior dimensions. The GM twins offer better headroom in the first row than their competitors. Some of the standout interior features of the Silverado 3500HD Crew Cab are:

The 2022 Silverado 3500HD diesel Crew Cab comes with a bold styling just like the 2021 model. The front fascia imbibes a rather large grille for our liking and a bold Chevrolet logo in chrome. The branding splits the headlamps into two distinct parts namely the DRL unit and LED reflector lights. We would consider the design as experimental rather than attractive. The front bumper holds the fog lamps. 

The hood scoop elevates the styling and lends the truck an SUV-like appeal. The side profile is like any other crew cab truck. The black cladding on the squarish wheel arches makes the truck look rugged. The rear profile comes with a cargo bed and two vertical tail lamps with Chevrolet branding on the tailgate of the cargo bed. Overall, the design is good and makes the truck look like it's built to last. 

The GMC Sierra 3500HD is the lightest truck in the comparison, followed by Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD, Ford F-350 SuperDuty, and RAM 3500. The GM twins are based on the same platform and come with identical exterior dimensions. The RAM 3500 Crew Cab sits on a shorter wheelbase of 150 inches which might help with better maneuverability in the city. However, the F-350 comes with a lower ground clearance which is almost 3 inches shorter than its competition. It is also slightly more fuel-efficient than the Silverado 3500 diesel Crew Cab. However, the Silverado 3500 diesel Crew Cab offers a staggering towing capacity of up to 36,000 pounds which is more than the F-350 SuperDuty’s towing capacity. The Silverado 3500 diesel Crew Cab offers higher ground clearance as well. So if you are looking for slightly better performance and interiors then go for the F-350 and if you are concerned about heavy duty hauling then go for the Silverado 3500 diesel Crew Cab

As both the models belong to the same parent company, there are not many considerable differences between the two of them. Both the trucks come with the same drivetrain and offer the same towing capacity as well. However, their exterior and interior design is different to differentiate between two sister brands. So, choosing any one of them boils down to your personal taste as they are essentially the same wine in different bottles.

The RAM 3500 Crew Cab offers better interior styling and quality than the Chevrolet Silverado 3500 diesel Crew Cab. The Chevrolet Silverado 3500 Crew Cab offers better range as it is equipped with a larger fuel tank. It also offers better legroom than the RAM 3500 as it sits on a longer wheelbase. The performance of both the trucks is on par with each other although the Chevrolet Silverado 3500 Crew Cab offers a higher towing capacity of 36,000 pounds.
