Heavy-duty trucks like the Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD are not your typical full-size pickups. They are meant for those who want some serious hauling and towing capabilities from a vehicle. Not only does the Silverado deliver on these requirements, but is also one of the best in what it does. For 2022, the Silverado 3500HD is mostly unchanged and will be available to the masses in four trim levels. These include Work Truck, LT, LTZ, and High Country. The 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Regular Cab Diesel is only available in the bottom two trims. It will set you back at least $36,995.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

For 2022, the pickup comes with the same 6.6L Duramax Turbo-diesel V8 as the last year, which gives this pickup a powerful package of 445 hp and a mind-boggling 910 lb-ft of torque. With Rear-wheel drive as standard configuration, the pickup can also be availed in All-wheel drive too. The 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD will go against some of its usual giant rivals such as the RAM 3500, GMC Sierra 3500HD, and Ford F-350 SuperDuty. Continue with the article to know more.

Which trim should you buy?

The LT is the better-equipped trim out of the two, and hence it automatically becomes the most desirable trim too. If you’re willing to spend a little more, don’t miss out on the AWD drivetrain which costs an additional $3,800 to the base price. The only reason to go with the base Work Truck trim would be that if the only motto behind buying this heavy-duty machine is just to complete your work in the most durable way.

The 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD is available on the official website. You can go on the website and configure your truck as per your needs.

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD diesel Regular Cab Engine and Performance

The diesel engine, which is a 6.6L Duramax Turbo V8, is standard on the diesel variant of the pickup. It is a high-performance engine capable of putting out 445 horses and has a maximum torque output of a crazy 910 lb-ft. It is paired to a 10-speed automatic transmission instead of the standard 6-speed. You’ll have the option of choosing where the power is delivered. The standard drivetrain is an RWD, but an additional $3,800 will fetch you the AWD. Chevy also offers a dual-rear-wheels setup for the Regular Cab as well as other configurations. This increases the payload and towing capacity by a fair margin.

The towing and payload capacities of the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Regular Cab are simply exceptional. With the diesel engine, it gets even better. properly equipped, i.e., with a long bed, RWD drivetrain, and dual-rear-wheel setup, the 3500HD is capable of towing 20,000 pounds from the hitch and up to 36,000 pounds with a gooseneck setup. While acceleration figures are not known for its diesel variant, the 2022 Silverado with its gasoline V8 performs decently as it does 0-60 mph and quarter-mile in 7.4 and 15.0 seconds, respectively.

The Duramax powertrain is significantly better than the standard gas V8. It improves the driving experience by a fair margin, thanks to its seamless 10-speed automatic gearbox. There’s abundant power at the wheels, which results in effortless heavy-duty working capabilities. The steering, however, is a letdown. It is inaccurate and somewhat sloppy in its feedback even with the electric-assist system. Without the load, the ride is uncomfortable and stiff.

The Ford F-350 SuperDuty Diesel makes a mark in this competition by offering the best-in-class power output of 475 hp, whereas the RAM 3500 does the same with its 1075 lb-ft of torque. The Chevrolet Silverado enjoys the advantage of coming with a 10-speed automatic, whereas the rivals still work 6- and 8- speed automatic transmission. When comparing the price tag, the GMC Sierra comes out to be the most expensive option at $39,095.

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD diesel Regular Cab Fuel Economy

EPA doesn’t rate vehicles as heavy as the Chevy Silverado 3500HD, and naturally, all other pick-ups in this segment are also not tested. Hence we don’t have the data to tell you, however, the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD is equipped with a 36-gallon fuel tank just like it did in 2021. As far as the engines go, the Diesel variant will manage to provide slightly better mileage than the standard Gas engine.

Just like its counterpart, the Sierra 3500HD is also fitted with the same 36-gallon fuel tank. Both these pick-ups lead the way for the biggest fuel tank in the segment. The range, however, is not available, but it is supposedly decent compared to other trucks in this segment. Ford follows the GM twins with a fuel tank capacity of 34 gallons, leaving the RAM 3500 at the back with a tank of 32 gallons only.

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD diesel Regular Cab Interior

The one aspect where the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD fell short was its interior. Since it’s a carry forward design, so there are next to nothing changes in its interior, and sadly, it looks a bit dated. The dashboard is slightly higher than we would have liked, and it somewhat compromises the exterior visibility of the driver. It comprises of soft and hard plastic touches everywhere which are not of great quality. The center console is huge, and it contains the infotainment unit along with several buttons and knobs of decent size to manipulate the functions and climate control.

The Regular Cab configuration can seat up to three passengers. There’s plenty of space for the occupants in terms of headroom, shoulder room, and legroom. The seats are not as comfortable as the ones offered in the RAM 3500 or the Ford F-350 SuperDuty, but they are satisfactory. Both the driver and passenger seats are 4-way manual adjustable. The base trim Work Truck features vinyl upholstery, while the LT trim gets cloth upholstered seats.

The 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Regular Cab Diesel has identical cargo space to that of the GMC Sierra 3500HD. They both share the podium for the best in class cargo space as they can store up to 83.5 cubic feet of luggage. Both these pick-ups also offer the best interior space in the segment. The GM twins are followed by Ford and RAM, offering 78.5 and 74.7 cubic feet of space. Some of the highlights of the interior are:

  • Single-zone automatic climate control
  • Vinyl upholstery (WT) Cloth upholstery (LT)
  • 4-way manual-adjustable driver and passenger seats
  • 40/20/40 split-bench front seat with under storage
  • Carpeted floor covering (LT)
  • Power windows (LT)

What’s there to keep you entertained?

Both the trims that are available in the Regular Cab configuration offer two different setups. The base trim Work Truck comes with a 7.0-inch touchscreen display, while the LT upgrades this screen to an 8.0-inch touchscreen display. Both these units are powered by Chevrolet Infotainment 3 system. The base trim is also equipped with a 3.5-inch diagonal monochromatic Driver Information Center, while the LT upgrades this to a 4.2-inch diagonal multi-color Driver Information Center. Both these trims are fitted with a 2-speaker audio system, which to be honest, is not up to mark. As you go higher in the trim levels, you’ll find better options that are not available on these two. Some of the standard features offered by this unit are:

  • Voice-activated Bluetooth connectivity
  • AM/FM Stereo
  • Satellite radio (LT)
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration
  • Rearview camera
  • USB ports

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD diesel Regular Cab Exterior

As far as the exterior styling goes, Chevy is going to continue with the same menacing look as it did in 2021 for the Silverado 3500HD. Its front fascia comprises a massive grille with huge daytime running halogen headlamps. The base trim Work Truck gets black exterior trim, while the LT gets a more attractive chrome trim and bumpers. The front bumper is fitted with two tow hooks, while the humongous hood is characterized by a subtle hood scoop.

You understand the vast stretch of the Silverado 3500HD once you observe the pick-up truck from the sides. The base trim sits on 17-inch steel wheels, while the LT gets 18-inch alloy wheels. It has a high ground clearance of 10.2-inches which allows it to pull off tough off-road terrains with ease. Some more features seen from the sides include big heated power-adjustable side-view mirrors, side steps, etc. The rear end of the 3500HD might seem the way it was, but it is now equipped with a better six-function Multi-Flex tailgate. Along with that, it comes with big and upright LED taillamps, rear bumper corner steps, and a single exhaust outlet.

Both the products of GM have almost identical exterior dimensions. The GMC Sierra 3500HD and the Chevy Silverado 3500HD have the longest wheelbase in the segment of 141.6 inches. The Sierra has the highest ground clearance in the segment as it stands 11.2 inches off the ground. However, it also weighs the most at 6,339 lbs. It is over 400 pounds heavier than the Silverado. Some of the highlights of the exterior are:

  • Daytime running halogen headlamps
  • LED taillamps
  • Side steps, rear bumper corner steps
  • Heated, power-adjustable, manual-folding side-view mirrors
  • Chevy’s EZ lift tailgate (six-function Multi-Flex)

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD diesel Regular Cab Safety

The 2021 Chevy Silverado 3500HD hasn’t been crash-tested by either the NHSTA or the IIHS. Hence it is difficult to put its crashworthiness in terms of scores. Since the 2022 version of it is a carry-forward design, the results may not vary. It is, however, equipped with ample safety and driver-assist features to keep its passengers safe. When compared to its rivals, the list of standard features seems smaller, but a lot of optional features are available.

In its standard configuration, the pickup offers automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning with lane-keep assist, forward collision warning, rear cross-traffic alert, etc. The Regular Cab misses out on some high-tech features like Auxilliary trailer camera, following distance indicator, hill descent control, etc. which are only available on higher trim levels. Some of the standard safety equipment offered by the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Regular Cab includes:

  • 6 airbags
  • Cruise control
  • Front and rear Park assist (optional)
  • Hitch guidance
  • OnStar & Chevrolet Connected services
  • Electronic Stability control
  • Driveline traction control with ABS
  • Tire pressure monitoring system

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD diesel Regular Cab Competition

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Regular Cab Diesel vs 2022 RAM 3500 Regular Cab Diesel

Both these pick-up trucks are well-known in the heavy-duty segment as both perform outstandingly. The RAM has a more torquey diesel engine than the Chevy, and it also has better towing and payload capacities. It also has one of the best interior layouts in the segment, however, it lacks the space and cargo space that the Silverado offers. Both are quite equally matched, but the RAM’s exterior looks steal the show for us.

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Regular Cab Diesel vs 2022 Ford F-350 SuperDuty Regular Cab Diesel

One of the best pick-up trucks in the segment, the 2022 Ford F-350 SuperDuty is more powerful than the Silverado (diesel engine) but has a lower payload and towing capacities than the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Regular Cab. The Ford has a better-equipped interior, but just like the RAM, it lacks the space and storage space that the Silverado offers. Looks and exterior styling are argumentative and opinion-based, but we’d go for the Silverado.

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Regular Cab Diesel vs 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD Regular Cab Diesel

There is no real comparison here as both of these are the products of GM. They are almost identical in every aspect. Both have identical powertrain figures, interior space, cargo space, fuel economy, and safety scores. All that matters is your choice of exterior looks and design. The Silverado 3500HD with the base engine is also much cheaper than the GMC Sierra, which makes it a more value-for-money purchase.

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD diesel Regular Cab Final Verdict

The Chevrolet Silverado is the quintessential heavy-duty pick-up truck, and it is very good in what it does, i.e., provide great towing and payload capacities. Its diesel engine is potent and is best suited for those who want to haul big and heavy stuff. Although it falls short on interior features and overall design and layout, it offers unmatched space for both passengers and luggage. If you’re looking for a no-nonsense pick-up truck, then the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Regular Cab Diesel should suit your preferences.
