The Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD is a familiar sight on the American streets, as you can always see it hauling heavy cargo or towing a trailer from one commercial place to another. This beast on the streets is a stern example of all hard work and no play. All its specs and equipment onboard are geared towards hauling heavy loads or towing massive trailers. With a powerful 6.6-liter gasoline engine onboard and an extra powerful diesel engine as an option, the Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD is a mean heavy-duty pickup truck that certainly means business with its long list of workload-focused equipment.

With a thorough makeover in 2020 for its fourth generation, the Silverado lineup further honed its skills. It now gained more powerful engines, better cabin and cargo space and essentially better towing and payload capacity. The overall evolution of the fourth-gen Silverado presented an even stronger proposition in the full-size pickup truck segment than its predecessor. With 1500 and 2500 models sitting below, the 3500HD sits at the top of the Silverado family.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

Also available as Double Cab and Crew Cab, it's the Regular Cab body style that offer̥s optimal utility. Though the Silverado 3500HD Regular Cab gets seating for two passengers, it opens a large loading area at the back. Don’t expect too much fanciness and the 3500HD Regular Cab gets a basic feature-set unlike its Crew and Double Cab counterparts. At a starting price of $36,500, the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Regular Cab is a tough work machine and goes all up against the likes of Ford F-350 SuperDuty, GMC Sierra 3500HD, and RAM 3500

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Regular Cab Features

Not much to expect from the base “Regular Cab'' model here and the 2022 Silverado 3500HD Regular Cab gets a basic set of features that you would need on a daily basis. However, in the Crew Cab and Double Cab body styles, the Silverado 3500HD does get a host of advanced tech and creature comforts.

Which Trim should you buy?

The Regular Cab configuration is only available for the lowest trim levels of the Silverado nomenclature. To get the most bang for your buck, we recommend opting for the LT trim. This trim gets an upgraded touchscreen, better quality of seats, as well as a driver information display. Select the 4x4 drivetrain and a bunch of driver assistance features for more capability. To add in more options, we will definitely add the Trailering package to get convenient trailering features like a trailer hitch and a platform.

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Regular Cab Release Date

With no major changes on the cards, the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Regular Cab makes a swift transition from its outgoing model and is already available in stores for grab.

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Regular Cab Engine and Performance

The 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD carries forward the same trusty 6.6-liter naturally aspirated V-8 engine as its standard powertrain. This engine powers the heavy pickup with its robust power output of 401 hp and 464 lb-ft of torque. Chevrolet pairs this engine to a 6-speed automatic transmission just like the previous year's Silverado with power being sent either to the rear or all four wheels. Buyers can also equip a dual-rear-wheel axle if they crave that extra traction. With the power of the gas engine and the 6-speed automatic gearbox, the Silverado 3500HD can tow up to 17,400 pounds.

The 6.6-liter V8 block feels punchy and smooth and eagerly responds to your inputs. Power delivery from the 6-speed automatic transmission is crisp and refined with no lags whatsoever and when floored harder, the Silverado 3500HD Regular Cab can clock from 0-60 MPH in 7.0 seconds. Such a sprinting figure is surely impressive for a truck of this size. Thankfully, the 4-wheel disc brakes are sufficient enough to curb the vehement motion of this nearly 7000 lbs monster. While the Silverado stands a hair behind the RAM 3500 in terms of power, it has the highest torque figure in the league here which does help it in straight-line drags. Surprisingly, the Silverado 3500HD Regular Cab is also a confident stopper. The brake pedal feels firm with a good bite and you really feel how they bring such heavy mass to a stop.

The colossal weight of the 2022 Chevy Silverado 3500HD is duly felt when you drive the pickup around. The lack of steering feedback instills doubt in the mind of the driver while scaling tough corners. Even when equipped with the optional electric steering assist, the difference felt is marginal. The Chevy encounters a lot of body roll while cruising around, but it still remains under control in most situations.

While the steering might feel artificial and uninspiring, Chevy surprisingly performs a better job in maintaining the composure of your pickup on rough terrains. The Chevy handles every bump and other road imperfections like a pro, thanks to the stiff suspension. The automatic locking rear differential increases the traction whenever it notices a difference in wheel speeds, which eliminates the risk of tipping over.

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Regular Cab Fuel Economy

Vehicles over 7500 pounds of gross weight aren’t obligated to report any of their fuel estimates to EPA or any other government agency. The manufacturers of these heavy-duty pickup trucks skimp the fuel economy measurements while testing the vehicle. Hence, most of these pickups including the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD don’t have any official fuel economy numbers available.

However, thanks to numerous consumer forums, we can get our hand on some unofficial fuel economy estimates. The Chevy Silverado 3500HD with the base powertrain is expected to shell out an MPG of 14 with a combination of mixed city and highway driving. With its fuel tank capacity of 36 gallons, this equates to a driving range of 504 miles.

Frugal fuel economy isn’t particularly known to be a virtue of any heavy-duty pickup truck. However, the Chevy Silverado 3500HD establishes its place among the more frugal heavy-duty pickups, alongside its sibling the GMC Sierra 3500HD, credits to their larger fuel tanks that can hold 36-gallons of fuel. Both these pickups reportedly offer better fuel economy and mileage than their Ford and RAM counterparts.

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Regular Cab Interior

The 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD emphasizes a simple yet workman-focused interior. The Regular Cab configuration is ideal for buyers who only want to haul heavy loads. This configuration only allows a maximum passenger capacity of 2 or 3. The dashboard looks commanding when you first catch a glimpse of the cabin. The dash is integrated with easy-to-use switchgear for various vehicular functions.

Moving on to the seats, the Regular Cab variant includes only the front seats, with generous interior dimensions and adjustability features to adjust the driver’s spine. However, don’t expect over-the-top interior luxury, as the seats are only meant to focus on functionality while performing heavy workloads. As standard, you get vinyl upholstery which can be upgraded to cloth upholstery. Other interior features include 40/20/40-split folding bench seats and Single-zone automatic climate control.

The Chevy Silverado 3500HD Regular Cab gets a roll-formed high-strength steel cargo bed attached to its back, which it terms as ‘Durabed’. The Durabed is the most versatile cargo bed option in the heavy-duty segment, as it offers more cargo space than any other competitor. Besides, the cargo bed is highly functional as well, thanks to the 12 standard tie-downs.

The driver can enhance the cargo bed’s functionality by equipping the available LED cargo area lighting and a built-in 120-volt power outlet. While all trucks can seat 3 passengers only, the duo of the GM sisters leads over the Ford F-350 SuperDuty and RAM 3500 with their higher cargo capacity of 83.5 cubic feet and better interior dimensions. Standout interior features in the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Regular Cab are:

  • Cloth upholstery
  • 40/20/40 split-bench front seat with covered armrest storage
  • Single-zone climate control
  • Power door locks
  • Remote keyless entry
  • Power windows with driver and front passenger express-up/down

What’s there to keep you entertained?

The 2022 Chevy Silverado 3500HD Regular Cab gets a 7-inch touchscreen powered by the latest iteration of the Chevy Infotainment 3 software and is supported by Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration. This system is linked to a 2-speaker music system and an AM/FM radio to keep the driver entertained.

The pickup also includes some useful physical buttons and a handy volume and tuning knob to control the touchscreen without relying on the touch controls. Voice commands can also be used to access the infotainment. The LT trim gets a bigger 8-inch touchscreen as standard, with a 3 -month SiriusXM trial as standard. The driver can also equip a WiFi hotspot for extra connectivity through the optional features list. Standout infotainment features in the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Regular Cab are:

  • 7-inch diagonal color touchscreen
  • Available 8-inch diagonal color touchscreen
  • Chevrolet Infotainment 3 System
  • AM/FM radio

  • 3 -month SiriusXM trial
  • Available WiFi hotspot

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Regular Cab Exterior

The 2022 Chevy Silverado 3500HD looks more rugged and functional than ever before, which is exactly what we expect from a heavy-duty pickup truck. LED headlights and LED DRLs are now standard on every trim level. The massive front grille with the ‘Silverado’ letters in bold indicates that this truck isn’t meant for the faint-hearted. The LED headlights and DRLs flanking the sides of the grille also complement the bold persona of the pickup. The Silverado 3500HD rolls on bold 18-inch wheels. Chevy also provides you big trailing mirrors on the sides of the pickup, allowing you to get a good view of your rear while you are towing something heavy.

Regular Cab configurations get the long cargo box variant as standard, to let the driver haul massive cargo items in the cargo bed with ease. Access to the cargo bed is a piece of cake even for short drivers, thanks to the CornerStep in the rear bumper and the integrated bed steps on the sides of the pickup. Besides, you can also install other accessories like deflectors, fender Flares, recovery hooks, a snowplow, and the smart 6-function Multi-Flex tailgate at your convenience.

The Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Regular Cab is easily one of the biggest pickup trucks in the market, owing to its massive exterior dimensions. Still, the Chevy manages to cut some pounds of its weight and is lighter than the likes of the Ford F-350 Super Duty and its sibling the GMC Sierra 3500HD. The Chevy also sports an exceptional 11.22 inches of ground clearance, which is a class-leading figure. Standout exterior features in the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Regular Cab are:

  • 18-inch steel painted Silver wheels
  • Black rear bumper with integrated CornerSteps
  • Side steps
  • Front grille bar with "CHEVROLET" molded in Black
  • Solar-absorbing glass
  • Available Multi-Flex tailgate

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Regular Cab Safety

As expected from heavy-duty pickup trucks, the 2022 Chevy Silverado 3500HD doesn’t have any driver assistance features as standard. It only includes the basic safety features like StabiliTrak electronic stability control system with traction control, tire pressure monitoring, and 6 airbags. However, Chevy offers a Teen Driver system to protect young drivers from getting into trouble and a Hitch Guidance system that helps you while attaching a trailer.

This system works in unison with the intuitive Rear Vision camera, which is a boon in disguise for heavy-duty pickups as they have rear visibility issues. Driver assistance techs like lane departure warning, front and rear park assist, forward collision alert, lane change alert, and rear cross-traffic alert are available as optional features. Standout safety features in the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Regular Cab are:

  • StabiliTrak electronic stability control system
  • Traction control
  • Hitch Guidance
  • Teen Driver
  • Rear Vision camera
  • Available OnStar & Chevrolet Connected Services
  • Available Front and Rear Park Assist
  • Available Forward Collision Alert

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Regular Cab Competition

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Regular Cab vs 2022 Ford F-350 Super Duty Regular Cab

The Chevy Silverado 3500 has always locked horns with the Ford F-350 SuperDuty at the top of the pyramid. Speaking of the Ford, the F-350 SuperDuty is an incredibly versatile pickup truck with a ton of configurations available at your selection. The Ford is also the more capable pickup, offering a maximum gas towing capacity of 21000 pounds, which is more than what the Chevy offers.

The Ford also has a more upmarket cabin, with plenty of tech features inside. The Chevy redeems itself with its bigger cargo box and also offers more convenience features than the Ford when it comes to loading cargo. Remember that the Ford does get pricier as you add in more options, so the Chevy is slightly the better option if you only want raw workload-focused performance with nothing too fancy.

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Regular Cab vs 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD Regular Cab

Since both the Chevy Silverado 3500HD and the GMC Sierra 3500HD are based on the same platform, both the sister pickups from GM sport an identical list of equipment and are almost similar in terms of interior and exterior dimensions. The GMC pickup is slightly more expensive than the Chevy, as it features a more upmarket cabin as you move higher up the trim levels.

However, since we are considering the Regular Cab configuration, both these pickups sport an identical cabin in terms of interior quality. The Chevy also offers you more driver assistance features in its safety suite and is also more affordable overall. In the end, it all comes down to which brand you are willing to extend your loyalty to.

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Regular Cab vs 2022 RAM 3500 Regular Cab

The RAM 3500 has made a name as the fanciest pickup in the heavy-duty pickup industry ever since its redesign. The RAM sports a powerful V-8 under its hood that makes more power than the Chevy, although the Chevy wins the duel in terms of torque. The RAM does boast of a lot of off-roading equipment, which makes it a better pick-up off the trail.

Furthermore, the RAM features a well-appointed cabin and plenty of cutting-edge technology, to help you with trailering and other heavy-duty stuff. Thankfully, the Chevy includes plenty of trailer assist technologies too. The RAM feels worth every penny spent and is clearly the more valuable option over the Chevy.

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Regular Cab Final Verdict

The new Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Regular Cab fulfills all the ideals of a raw heavy-duty pickup truck. The Silverado offers all the equipment and amenities that are necessary for towing or hauling heavy cargo. The powertrains feel very capable and lively, as they live up to the expectations in every hard-working situation.

Although the Chevy may be a bit bland in terms of handling, its exceptional cargo versatility is the one to beat. The interiors are also focused on extreme functionality and minimum driver distraction, although we do feel that the interior quality could have been more classy and upscale. In a nutshell, this is the ideal pickup if you want maximum performance without shelling out too much money or time.
