Detailed Review

Young and bold! Chevrolet has saved the Sonic sedan from aging after giving it few refreshments last year. The 2018 Chevy Sonic has successfully become competitive among its prominent rivals. The changes for 2018 is minimal and it is available in base LS, mid-level LT, and high-end Premier trim levels.

There is tough competition for the 2018 Sonic in the segment. The Ford Fiesta and Kia Rio are easy to recommend due to their upmarket interior and sporty drivability. If you are willing to shed more bucks, you can still get a well-equipped and spacious Chevrolet Sonic with better performance and fuel economy.

The Urban Sedan from Chevrolet, the Sonic Sedan has been one of the popular choices for buyers in the segment looking for a fun city sedan. The 2018 version of the Chevy Sonic starts at a very affordable $16,170 for the base LS variant and goes up to $21,395 for the fully loaded automatic.

Just last year, Chevy updated their front styling and interior dashboard, adding more active safety features as well. Powering the 2018 Sonic are two engine options that are tuned to offer great fuel economy. The Sonic remains quiet on the road, and the new interior design adds more style than the earlier version.

2018 Chevrolet Sonic Engine

6.9/10

“Although the 1.8-liter standard engine is a solid performer in this size category, the Sonic’s dark horse is the optional 138-hp 1.4-liter turbocharged engine. Available with manual or automatic transmissions, the 1.4-liter Ecotec engine … makes for some seriously fun driving.” — Autotrader

Braking and Handling

The Chevrolet Sonic 2018 is gifted with good steering and handling, with the RS package’s suspension. However, the manual gearbox might feel clunky at times, but the 1.4-liter turbo lacks responsiveness at low rpm. 2018 Sonic’s handling is best suited for city streets and smooth enough for highway trips. If you seek sporty feel, you must pick the Premier trim.

2018 Chevrolet Sonic Interior

6.2/10

“Whether sedan or hatchback, the Sonic’s 5-passenger interior is eye-pleasing, roomy for its size and has an air of sophistication thanks to the standard 7-inch touchscreen that dominates the center front of the cockpit. The rear seat is one of the roomiest in the segment, and the versatile and recommendable hatchback models offer 47.7 cubic feet of cargo room with rear seats folded.” – Kelley Blue Book

Seating and Comfort

Chevrolet Sonic offers plenty of headroom and legroom in front and rear, though the elbow room remains tight. The carmaker has used lots of cheap plastic and thick rood pillars that reduces the visibility. The door openings are big enough to let you get in and out easily. The infotainment system is well reviewed and placed in the center alongside intuitive rotary knobs for climate control.

Design and Styling

The 2018 Chevrolet Sonic design remains aged for the seventh year in the row. Last year, the automaker gave a refresh to the front end in order to match the recent launched Chevys. The updated front fascia includes a redesigned hood along with the projector-beam headlamps, a two-part grille, with an enlarged lower intake, LED daytime running lights, and optional fog lights. The update also includes new bright paint colors and new wheel designs with 15-, 16-, or 17-inch sizes depending on the trim level.

2018 Chevrolet Sonic Competition

Chevrolet Sonic 2018 VS Ford Fiesta

The Chevy Sonic’s 138 horsepower powertrain is overshadowed by the Ford Fiesta’s 1.6-liter turbocharged EcoBoost engine that delivers 197 hp and 202 lb-ft of torque. On a precise note, the Ford Fiesta’s engine maximizes fuel efficiency to surpass Chevy Sonic’s mileage figures.

Chevrolet Sonic 2018 VS Kia Rio

Kia Rio needs less maintenance than the Chevy Sonic. The sole reason is the camshafts present in Rio’s engine that are driven by steel chain. The Rio sedan has more front headroom, front legroom, front hip room, front shoulder room, rear hip room and more rear shoulder room than the 2018 sonic sedan. But, the Chevy Sonic offers more cargo space than the Kia Rio.

Chevrolet Sonic 2018 VS Nissan Versa

You will find more space inside the Chevy sonic as 2018 sonic is much wider than the Nissan Versa. Looking at the overall length, the sonic will take similar space in your garage as the Nissan Versa. Because of higher torque, Chevy Sonic’s engine does a better job of transmitting power than the Nissan Versa. Chevy Sonic offers smaller rear head- and legroom, which can make the rear passenger a bit uncomfortable. While the Nissan Versa turns out to be spacious and comfortable with little more front head- and legroom.

2018 Chevrolet Sonic Final Verdict

The 2018 Chevy Sonic gets an array of refreshing goodies, such as an available power driver’s seat, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility and a heated steering wheel. The sedan offers buyers a good value with a great fuel economy at a reasonable price. If you are looking for more fun and dynamic drive, you may consider Kia Rio or Ford Fiesta.

There is no scarcity of cars to choose from if you need something cost-effective and under budget. The 2018 Chevrolet Sonic competed promptly with the rivals and stands out for its upscale interior and other standard features. It is really fun to drive when you opt for the turbocharged engine fitted Chevy Sonic model.
