Detailed Review

Making a small car is tough. You need to compromise on style, the performance of the vehicle is middling to say the least, and these are usually cramped at the back. But the 2017 Chevrolet Sonic Hatchback is not just another small car. It scores on all these factors, to an extent and is here to compete with the likes of the Ford Fiesta S Hatchback, the Hyundai Accent (SE Manual) and the Kia Rio (LX Manual).

The Chevrolet Sonic, despite being an older variant compared to its rivals, does offer long distance comfort and decent room at the back, giving its rivals a run for their money in every parameter possible.

2017 Chevrolet Sonic Hatchback Features

6.0/10

The 2017 Chevrolet Sonic Hatchback comes in two trims. Both these trims are powered by a 1.8-liter Variable Valve DOHC 4-cylinder engine that generates about 138 hp at 6300 rpm and 135 lb.-ft. of torque at 3800 rpm. It is a five-passenger car and gives a combined fuel economy of 28 mpg. The base trim is priced $17,580 while the top-level trim comes at $19,720.

Along with this, the Sonic does get Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system and new, redesigned interiors as standard across variants.

While the Base version contains all the basic features that one requires in this price range, I would suggest going for the Premium variant as it gets Climate control and a few more features at not much a price difference.

The 2017 Chevrolet Sonic Hatchback is powered by a 1.8liter DOHC 4-cylinder engine with a 5-speed manual transmission as standard and produces about 138 hp of power at 6300 rpm and 125 lb.-ft. of Torque a 3800 rpm.

Here, all the rivals are pretty much similar, with each of them offering a 1.6-liter engine, The Horsepower and Torque values for all of them are quite similar, with the benchmark being set by the Sonic, quite expectedly, considering its bigger engine.

These entire cars offer manual transmission as standard with 5/6 speed gear boxes as standard.

Acceleration

The Sonic’s engine does fine in all parameter barring this where it is the slowest of the blocks at 9.7 seconds, about a second slower than the Rio at first place. The emission from the Sonic is the most as well.

The Rio is the fastest amongst all the parameters here with the Accent being a close second. The Sonic and the Fiesta take the other two positions here.

Handling and Steering

Much like the previous Sonic, this new one, with the same engine as being used in this car since 2012, is sturdy and compact when it hits the road. The electric power steering has just the right amount of balance and feel about it.

The dynamics are surely the best in class in this category. The Chevrolet engineers must be lauded here for making a car that feels so smooth that it can give a tough fight to any sedan, while on the road.

Braking

There is no surprise in here as the Sonic, placed last when comes to acceleration, doesn’t have the best brakes either, two things which are generally proportional. However, hard braking should be avoided on this car as it tends to nose dive.

2017 Chevrolet Sonic Hatchback Interior

6.6/10

“Most notable is the Sonic's revised styling; it now looks more like a small-scale version of the Malibu and SS sedans. Inside there's a mildly redesigned center stack, and the gauge cluster has a more traditional layout than before”-Edmunds

Seating and Comfort

The inside of the Chevrolet Sonic is the place to be. The upper dash and the door trim, along with the quality seat fabrics give the car an upscale feel. The new addition of the Chevrolet MyLink system is not something you see often in this bracket of cars.

This is something where the Chevrolet Engineers have done a great job. The front seats are so good and so comfortable that you would want to be in there forever.

However, the same cannot be said of the rear seats, which needs a lot of work.

The rear seats are better and much more comfortable. However passengers over 6 feet are going to have a hard time. The Head room is fine for a normal sized adult, while the knee room is more than adequate.

The interior features include:

  • Seat, rear bench 60/40 split-folding with outboard height-adjustable headrests
  • Power outlet, auxiliary, front center console
  • Floor mats, carpeted front and rear, deluxe
  • Steering column, tilt and telescoping

Infotainment

The Sonic does get a Chevrolet MyLink auto system, something seen mostly in high end cars.  The whole infotainment panel has been very well integrated with the dashboard.

Also, it does have the basic features like:

  • Audio system, Chevrolet MyLink Radio with 7" diagonal color touch-screen, AM/FM stereo includes Bluetooth streaming audio for music and select phones, featuring Android Auto and Apple CarPlay capability for compatible phone
  • Audio system feature, premium 6-speaker system

Cargo

The Chevrolet Sonic does have a massive trunk which can easily hold a few duffle bags among others. It has a wide opening with a flat surface, which is good for inserting and removing those heavy bags.

“We favor the design of the hatchback, which reminds us of classy-yet-practical European models, featuring hidden rear door handles in the black areas of the C-pillars that make the Sonic hatchback appear more like a 2-door.”- Kelley Blue Book

Dimension and Weight

The Sonic does live up to it name, with it having an expressive look inside-out. It is fair to say that the Sonic is the most solid looking car in this segment.

The Sonic has got decent sized dimensions, somewhere five passengers can fit in, although not very comfortably.

The one thing this Sonic cannot brag about has to be its Ground Clearance. At 5.0 inches above the ground, it is the worst in class, and leaves it competitors’ way ahead.

Some of the exterior features include:

  • Tire, T115/70R16, blackwall, compact spare
  • Headlamps, projector type
  • Headlamp control, automatic on and off
  • Fog lamps, front
  • Mirrors, outside heated power-adjustable, body-color, manual-folding

2017 Chevrolet Sonic Hatchback Safety

8.1/10

IIHS Rating has not been given for the 2017 Chevrolet Sonic hatchback whereas the NHTSA has given the car an overall crash test rating of 5-star which is very good in this segment. The car packs various high-end safety features as standard and Chevy ahs also updated some of its safety features.

  • Air bags, 10 total (Always use safety belts and child restraints. Children are safer when properly secured in a rear seat in the appropriate child restraint. See the Owner's Manual for more information.)
  • Air bags, dual-stage, frontal, driver and right-front passenger includes Passenger Sensing System (Always use safety belts and child restraints. Children are safer when properly secured in a rear seat in the appropriate child restraint. See the Owner's Manual for more information.)
  • StabiliTrak, stability control system
  • Electronic brake force distribution
  • OnStar Guidance Plan for 3 Months including Automatic Crash Response, Stolen Vehicle Assistance, Roadside Assistance, Turn-by-Turn Navigation, Vehicle Diagnostics and more (trial excludes Hands-Free Calling)

2017 Chevrolet Sonic Hatchback Competition

Ford Fiesta S Hatchback

The Chevrolet costs $2,000 more than the Ford Fiesta. And while it has 0.2-liter advantage on the engine, it is to be seen as it generates quite appreciable figures for that engine. Its pickup is the worst amongst the lot.

However, it does boast of the largest trunk and a considerable value of fuel economy. So, the Ford Fiesta is the car you should go for between the two.

Hyundai Accent

The fight between the Chevrolet Sonic and the Hyundai Accent goes right down to the wire. Both generate decent values of torque and power. Now, the Pickup and braking of the cars are similar as well. The fuel economy of the accent is better.

However, the bigger trunk and the more spacious cabin, which can easily accommodate 5 people and a much bigger engine tilts the Head to head in the Sonic’s favor, thus emerging as a clear winner.

Kia Rio

Again, like the Accent, the Sonic is priced $2,000 more than the Rio, which could be massive while selecting a car. The engine is bigger in the Sonic and is obviously bigger in power and torque generation. The pickup of the Rio is way better than the Sonic.

However, with a and a much spacious cabin, a sturdier body, the Sonic pips the Rio in this comparison.

2017 Chevrolet Sonic Hatchback Final Verdict

The 2017 Chevrolet Sonic Hatchback is sturdy, elegant and solid. The fuel economy, trunk size and the braking are top class. But the main attraction towards this car has to be its engine generation and a sturdy design. It also gets a Chevrolet MyLink system, something not seen in this category of cars before. All in all, the Fiesta looks beautiful and performs admirably.

However, the problem lies in the acceleration of the car along with its ground clearance, making the buyer think twice before buying this car, as bad roads could be a concern for this car.

So, if you want an all-round package, the Kia Rio would do the job with great specifications, while an outside pick would be the Hyundai Accent. Buy the Chevrolet Sonic if Solid built quality and convenience is the major factor for you buying a car.
