The 2014 Chevrolet Spark is a 4-seat compact hatchback made for the urban jungle. Offered at an affordable price tag, the Chevy Spark is a viable choice for many as it offers a spacious interior and excellent fuel economy. Maneuvering it through traffic or highways is as simple as it is. However, the ride quality is rough on highways and won’t suit longer drives, but the pliant ride and handling is a major advantage in this segment.

Overall Rating

With sub-par reliability ratings and unathletic acceleration, the 2014 Chevrolet Spark may sometimes seem a second choice when compared to some more sensible rivals. However, at this price, Chevy gives out a good number of high-tech features and earns solid safety ratings. At an MSRP beginning at $12,170, the 2014 Chevy Spark stands against the Toyota Yaris, Ford Fiesta and Mitsubishi Mirage.

We Recommend

We would recommend you to go for the 1LT trim, as it brings in a lot more features regarding safety and entertainment without shooting up the price. Going for CVT would be more sensible as the manual shifts may become cumbersome in city traffic, which is where it is expected to be used the most.

2014 Chevrolet Spark Engine and Performance

7.0/10

All the trims of the 2014 Chevy Spark are equipped with a small 1.2L 4-cylinder engine that churns out 84 hp and 83 lb-ft torque. The engine is paired with either a 5-speed manual or a CVT, both sending power to the front wheels. With precise steering and transmission character, the Spark is easy to drive in city traffic. The naturally aspirated inline-4 engine is doubtlessly capable but feels laggy on the highway.

The engine is less powerful but is sufficient for the city commutes. The acceleration figures aren’t as good as the rivals, but the price tag and purpose of making the Chevy Spark are much different than the rest. The 2014 Spark sprints to 60 mph from standstill in a rather slow 12.1 seconds and completes the quarter-mile in a lethargic 18.6 seconds.

The Chevy spark isn’t the most powerful or fastest in the segment. The pricier Fiesta gets the most powerful and most torquey engine among the rivals that produces 120 hp and 112lb.-ft. However, Toyota Yaris manages to have the fastest acceleration figures of 9.4 seconds followed by the Ford Fiesta. Spark comes third in these affairs followed by Mitsubishi Mirage. Mitsubishi has the most underpowered inline-3 engine of the lot, therefore its performance is also very poor and similar to the Chevrolet

2014 Chevrolet Spark Fuel Economy

6.0/10

A buyer in this segment would always be keen on the efficiency of the particular vehicle they intend to purchase. The 2014 Chevy Spark is nothing less than offering you the best fuel economy with promising range figures. The EPA rates the Spark for 31 MPG in the city, 39 MPG on highways, and 34 MPG combined. With a 9.2-gallon fuel tank, the small hatchback gets 285 miles of range in the city and 359 miles on highways.

Mitsubishi Mirage returning 37MPG combined is the most fuel-efficient pick in the segment followed by the Chevy Spark. The underpowered engine really is worthy when fuel economy is a concern for you. Though the EPA ratings are lower for the Toyota Yaris and Fiesta than the rest, they get larger fuel tanks of 11.1 and 12.4 gallons, respectively, promising greater range. Thus, Fiesta scores the best-in-class range followed by the Yaris.

2014 Chevrolet Spark Interior

8.0/10

The interiors of the 2014 Chevy Spark are well-laid and minimalistic. The simple yet modern design and engineering impress every buyer. The interiors do get colored accents making things more youthful and appealing. The dashboard material quality is appreciable, as Chevy has mixed the hard plastic with good quality textured materials, making it somewhat better than any usual hard plastic dashboard.

The seats offer decent room and comfort but lack support. The base trim gets normal seats while the 2LT trim gets heated bucket seats at the front. With fabric upholstery in the base and leatherette upholstery in the top trim, Chevy lets the buyers customize their interior. The rear seats offer a good amount of room but would only suit kids. The rear seats are foldable, but the process isn’t as easy as it should be. Spark offers you 31.2 cubic feet of cargo volume with the rear seats folded, which is practically good enough and sufficient for one’s requirement.

The figures clearly show that the Chevy Spark gets lesser shoulder room in the rear compartment, which makes it a 4-seater. However, Spark gets the best-in-class legroom both in the front and the rear. The cargo space is a bit poor 11.4 cu-ft against the 15.6 cu-ft from the Yaris and 17.2 cu.-ft from the Mirage. Toyota offers a balanced front and rear row along with ample cargo space in the competition.

Standout interior features:

  • Heated front bucket seats
  • Leatherette or cloth seats
  • Leather-wrapped 3-spoke steering wheel
  • Remote Keyless entry

How intuitive is the 2014 Chevrolet Spark’s infotainment unit?

The 2014 Chevrolet Spark comes equipped with the MyLink in-house infotainment system typical to the brand. The system is modern and practical. The smooth and intuitive interface compliments well with the crisp display, while the easy-to-interpret menus and controls make it sleek and usable. However, the system sometimes lags to respond to touches, which shall be a tougher task for the driver to handle.

The system gets a 7.0-inch screen with 4-speaker audio system on the base version, upgrading to a 6-speaker system on the higher trims. It gets a built-in navigation system. Smartphone connectivity is ensured via Bluetooth Streaming, while Siri Eyes Free Voice Recognition is also featured.

Standout infotainment features:

  • 7.0” Chevrolet MyLink Infotainment System
  • 6-speaker audio system
  • SiriusXM Satellite Radio with a 3-month access
  • Steering mounted audio and phone controls
  • Apple Siri voice recognition with iPhone compatibility
  • Built-in navigation
  • Bluetooth streaming

2014 Chevrolet Spark Exterior

6.0/10

The 2014 Chevy Spark won’t have many changes on the exterior side. The sharp and stylish urban-car design makes it stand out in the crowd. The small yet bold looks are complemented by the large-eye design of the headlights and the vertically split grille, with the Chevy badging at the split. The 15-inch machine-face painted alloy wheels add to the looks from the side. The roof rails add to the muscular looks making it a perfect pick for urban drives.

Spark is smaller in dimension than the rivals. However, it is tall enough and stands 6.7 inches above the ground. Moreover, the outside power-adjustable heated mirrors get integrated turn-signal indicators. Also, Chrome elements can be found even in the liftgate. And the Halogen headlamps are automatic. Moreover, Daytime Running Lights are well-placed, making them functional and aesthetic.

Fiesta is the heaviest, longest, and widest in the segment followed by Yaris. Mirage is the lightest by a huge margin and feels uncanny, while the Chevy Spark is the smallest in terms of dimensions. However, Spark is tall enough with the best ground clearance in the competition. The longer wheelbase in the rivals let them get more space in the interior. The Spark also offers the best ground clearance while the Toyota Yaris rides the closest to the ground.

Standout exterior features:

  • Automatic Halogen Headlamps
  • Daytime Running Lights
  • Chrome elements
  • Rear spoiler with integrated LED center high-mounted stop/brake lamp
  • Silver-painted roof rails

2014 Chevrolet Spark Safety

7.0/10

The Chevy Spark is one of the safest cars in the segment scoring an overall 4 out of 5 stars in the crash tests conducted by the NHTSA. It has also received “Good” ratings in most of the parameters in the IIHS crash tests. Apart from that, the 1LT trim comes with the post-Collision safety system, which is a great move from Chevy. It also gets the StabiliTrak stability control system with Brake Assist. Additional driver aids include Hill Start Assist and Cruise Control. And with the OnStar system comes the 6-month Directions and Connection plan for Automatic Crash Response, Stolen Vehicle Assistance, and Roadside Assistance.

Standout safety features:

  • StabiliTrak stability control system
  • Brake Assist
  • Hill Start Assist
  • Cruise control
  • OnStar with 6-month Directions and Connection plan for Automatic Crash Response, Stolen Vehicle Assistance, and Roadside Assistance

2014 Chevrolet Spark Final Verdict

The 2014 Chevy Spark would be the choice for your family if you have a small one and need a budget-friendly hatchback to carry you. The Spark is a stylish, modern, practical, and spacious car with pretty high fuel efficiency as well as decent safety ratings. However, it would not be suitable if you commute longer. In such cases, you have similar rivals at a higher price in front of you. Yaris and Fiesta, being more powerful, would target performance more than practicality.
