Chevrolet has always been a brand that has brought us reliable cars that are good on performance and capability but when we talk about the smallest car in its lineup, we imagine a boring family vehicle. Well, the 2015 model year Chevrolet Spark is in no sense boring. The compact hatch is a peppy city slicker that adjusts perfectly in an urban jungle.

The 2015 Spark comes with new bells and whistles that make it an interesting choice. It comes with a 1.2-liter powerhouse that generates 84 horsepower, enough to zip through the city streets and turns. Coming in right below Chevrolet Sonic, the 2015 Chevy Spark competes against the likes of Kia Rio Hatchback, Mitsubishi Mirage, and Nissan Versa Note.

2015 Chevrolet Spark Features

7.0/10

The 2015 Chevrolet Spark comes in three trim levels, mainly the LS, 1LT, and 2LT. There is also an EV version, but it is only for sale in California and Oregon and has a different review. It comes with a standard 1.2L inline 4 engine producing 84 horsepower and 83 lb.-ft of torque and comes mated to a 5-speed manual or a CVT unit in the automatic variants.

The base LS starts from $12,270, $14,040 for the 1LT and $15,440 for the top manual 2LT. All variants have air conditioning, a trip meter, a rear window wiper, and power windows. All variants also come equipped with aluminum wheels. The top two variants have a wider array of connectivity features while the top variant has cosmetic changes as well as changes in materials for the steering wheel, seats, etc.

Even though the trims have all the necessary standards, the jump from the LS to 1LT is huge. The difference in offerings between the trims easily makes the middle variant, the 1LT an easy pick. Meanwhile, the top variant focuses more on the smaller features just to justify the more premium tag.

Hence the best trim to go with is easily the 1LT with just $1500 above the base MSRP. It includes all the extra features that make the experience better and is a much better upgrade from the LS rather than spending the extra shilling over the 2LT as the difference between them is less.

2015 Chevrolet Spark Engine and Performance

9.0/10

The performance is right what you would expect from an economy car. The engine powering the Spark is a puny 1.2-liter 4-cylinder engine with just 84 HP. The interesting part is that the power feels efficient when driven in city conditions and can keep up even when pushed hard.

The 5-speed manual transmission is smooth and works well with the peppy engine. The Continuously Variable Transmission or the CVT is also an upgrade and miles ahead when compared to the old 4 speed automatic in the 2013 Spark. The gear shifts are much smoother and aids in improving the economy of the car even more.

Even though the Chevy Spark offers tough competition to its rivals but is yet outperformed by the Kia Rio and the Nissan Versa Note. Both the rivals have a clear advantage in specifications and performance. But the Spark clearly outshines the Mitsubishi Mirage. Even though the Spark lacks in power, it can easily make up for agility in the streets and similar specs at a lower cost.

2015 Chevrolet Spark Fuel Economy

7.0/10

The fuel economy of the Spark slots right in the middle of the competition and easily beats two of its competitors. It offers 34 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway. Because of its smaller size and rounded shape, the mileage on highways or higher speeds is nowhere near its closest competition, the Mirage as it offers 40 mpg on city roads and an amazing 44 mpg on highways. The Spark still gives out better gas mileage than the Rio and the Versa with its gas-guzzling engines that give out a measly 27 mpg in the city and 37 on highways, 27 mpg in the city, and 36 mpg on the highways for both cars respectively.

The Spark also comes with 9.1 gallons of fuel capacity, whereas the Mirage comes with 9.2 gallons and with a better fuel economy and outperforms the Spark in this segment. The Rio and the Versa on the other hand come with 11.4 gallons and 10.8 gallons of tank capacity respectively, which compensate for their poor fuel economy.

The Mitsubishi Mirage beats all the competitors with a very impressive margin in terms of fuel economy. The Chevy Spark is not far behind though and is noticeably better than the other two competitors in the segment. However, the Mirage and Spark lose out on large tank sizes, and Kia Rio manages a better highway range leveraging the bigger fuel tank.

2015 Chevrolet Spark Interior

8.0/10

The interior of the 2015 Chevrolet Spark is somewhat a boon as well as a bane. The good part is that its interior is quirky with a motorcycle-like speedometer and sleek center console design. The downside comes with the heavy use of hard plastics that do not forget to remind you that it is in fact an economy hatchback. The quality of materials along the entire dash may seem tacky and lackluster.

The good part is that even though it is a small car, it can easily seat four passengers. The cabin space does not feel too cramped and that sets it apart from the competition. This is thanks to its tall stance which creates a sense of a roomier cabin than it is. The Chevrolet Spark has a total head, shoulder, and legroom of 37.30/49.70/42 inches respectively.

The Spark has smaller dimensions compared to the rivals and has a seating capacity of one less than the rivals, but the cabin does not feel cramped because of its tall body structure. The category where the Spark really falls behind is the trunk space as it has just 11.4 cubic feet of trunk capacity while the Nissan Versa Note which is clearly a winner here has 18 cubic feet of space. Key interior features include:

  • Heated Front Seats (2LT)
  • Leather Wrapped Steering and Seats (2LT)
  • Steering-mounted controls
  • Electronic Power Steering
  • Interior Air Filtration

How intuitive is the 2015 Chevrolet Spark's infotainment unit?

The infotainment system in the 2015 Spark comes with a lot of bells and whistles. The inclusion of smart connectivity features like Bluetooth, Aux, and USB is a good step in making the car compatible with future devices. The upper variants also come with a 7-inch touch screen that is well designed and fits plushly inside the center console.

The touch infotainment system also gets connectivity to 4G LTE which enables an in-cabin Wi-Fi system with 3 Gb of initial data-free. The Wi-Fi system also enables the car to have the Chevrolet On-Star system and MyLink connectivity systems which adds a nice touch to the whole package. Some of the highlights of the infotainment system on the Spark are:

  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • Aux input
  • Chevrolet On-Star and MyLink Connectivity
  • In-Cabin Wi-Fi
  • 4/6-Speaker Audio System
  • AM/FM

2015 Chevrolet Spark Exterior

6.0/10

Chevrolet did not design this vehicle to be anything else than what it is. But it is the little touches that make this car interesting. First, the color options provided for each variant make sure that the funky theme is carried along with the design philosophy on which the car is made. The lime green color especially makes the car justifiable for its mini-city zipper looks.

The car also has a trump card up its sleeve and that is its tall stature. This makes the Spark compensate for its short wheelbase and makes it look a bit bigger than it actually is. The Small design add-ons like the sweeping wind deflector at the back carry along its roofline a little bit more giving it a sharper look. Even the headlights have a distinctive sharp design that suits the exterior of the car in a nice way.

It can clearly be seen that the Spark has a decent ground clearance and is taller than all its competitors at least by a few inches. This gives it an edge and compensates for its limited seating capacity. The Chevy Spark also has the shortest wheelbase in the competition. A few key features about its exteriors are listed below:

  • 15-inch Aluminum Wheels
  • 15-inch Alloy Wheels (2LT)
  • Automatic Headlights (2LT)
  • Powered Side Mirrors (2LT)
  • Fog Lamps
  • Roof Rails

2015 Chevrolet Spark Safety

8.0/10

This is one segment where Spark really shines and outperforms all its rivals. The Chevrolet Spark received a 4 out of 5-star rating from NHTSA, one of the highest given to any small hatch at the time. Each trim segment of the car comes with 10 airbags as standard which makes it one of the safest in the segments. The car’s tall design also means a taller seating position for the driver which results in better visibility. Other safety features include:

  • Electronic Stability Control
  • Anti-Lock Braking System
  • Anti-Theft Alarm System
  • Remote Keyless Entry
  • Child Seat Anchors
  • Post-Collision Safety System
  • Tire-Pressure Monitoring System

2015 Chevrolet Spark Final Verdict

The Chevrolet Spark is an excellent choice when it comes to zipping through city traffic or parking in tight spots where space is seemingly an issue. The motor is punchy enough to get you from point A to point B while having fun on the journey. Moreover, Chevrolet is a brand that is known for a lot of excellent cars and hence reliability and service should not be an issue. The competition is where the Spark may be left behind in a few aspects like power, torque, or features but still offers unbeatable value at a competitive price.
