Coming in as one of the cheapest new cars that you can buy in the market, GM subsidiary Chevrolet has launched its subcompact hatchback, the 2022 Spark in the market. As a popular choice amongst first-time car buyers and college students, the 2022 Spark starts from $13,600 (exclusive of a $995 freight and destination charge) for the base LS trim with a 5-speed manual transmission. For 2022, GM has decided to not fiddle with the Spark apart from offering 3 new exterior paint options and bumping up the price by $200. The Spark comes with a 1.4-liter 4-cylinder 98-hp producing that claims to deliver 29 MPG in the city.

GM offers the 2022 Spark in a total of 4 trims- LS, 1LT, 2LT, and Activ, with an option of a CVT on all the trims and the 5-speed unit as standard. The 2022 Spark features quite a lot of features for its prices like heated seats, StabiliTrak stability control, keyless entry, 15" alloy wheels, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The 2022 Chevy Spark rivals other subcompacts like the Mitsubishi Mirage and the Kia Rio in the segment.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

"The Spark offers strong value for the money" - Edmunds

With two of the favorite cars among auto journos and publications alike, the Toyota Yaris Hatch and the Honda Fit hatch discontinued, customers have very few choices in the sub-compact segment. The 2022 Chevrolet Spark is one of the few standing sub-compact hatchbacks that isn't just high on features but comes out as the cheapest new car that you can buy in the market right now. Sadly, however, plenty of driving assistance features are optional even in the top trim.

GM offers the 2022 Spark with 3 packages- Interior Protection Package ($225), Driver Confidence Package ($295), and Winter/Summer Floor Mats Package ($295). Leasing options for the 2022 Spark start from around $249/month.

2022 Chevrolet Spark Features

"If you're considering a subcompact vehicle, chances are that the out-the-door price is a major consideration"- Edmunds

Being a carryover model, the Spark comes equipped with a standard 4-cylinder engine and is available with either of its two transmission options. Its extensive list of standard features is ample to keep you engaged on the go, even in the base variant, and hosts basic specifications like air conditioning, a rearview camera, and a 7-inch touchscreen system.

As one moves up the trim ladder, the feature list becomes all the more comprehensive with a number of driver-assistance features being made available with the subcompact hatchback. It falls in a price range that extends from $13,600 for the base variant to $18,100 for the top-tier trim.

We Recommend

We would recommend you opting for the 2022 Chevrolet Spark ACTIV to equip your vehicle with the best features. The mid-level ACTIV trim houses features of the LS and 1LT trims as standard and also adds additional optional features for higher comfort value and a slightly raised touring suspension. We also suggest opting for the manual transmission as it not only grants higher autonomy while driving but also saves the driver from the partially clunky nature of the CVT unit.

2022 Chevrolet Spark Engine and Performance

"Despite the standard hill start assist, getting things moving from a full stop is asking a lot from a little engine"- KBB

The 2022 Chevrolet Spark features a 1.4L four-cylinder engine that is rated at 98hp and 94lb.-ft of torque. While there is no engine upgrade available, we would have loved it if a more powerful unit was provided as optional. Evident from its outputs, the subcompact hatchback does feel a bit underpowered and is rather slow-moving.

2022 Chevrolet Spark hatchback handling

The base engine of the 2022 Chevrolet Spark comes mated to either a 5-speed manual transmission or a continuously variable transmission (CVT) unit. Either way, the engine transfers the power to the front wheels and while the manual transmission unit is standard, the CVT can be configured to the hatchback by paying an additional $1,100.

2022 Chevrolet Spark Hatchback In Acceleration Mode

Due to its smaller and manageable dimensions, the 2022 Chevrolet Spark is easily maneuverable and can fit into tight parking spots. The steering system feels precise and the subcompact hatchback handles with great aplomb throughout. The CVT unit lacks refinement and does feel a tad bit confusing. The suspension system is stable and helps power through all road imperfections without an iota of difficulty.

However, the segment that houses these three hatchbacks does not necessarily prioritize power and brute acceleration but rather holds decent drivability in the highest regard. When sprinting from 0 to 60 mph, the Kia and Mitsubishi clock 8.9 and 12.4 seconds, respectively. Made in South Korea, the 2022 Spark prioritizes city driving and MPG figures and hence, it seems to be off-pace when compared against the Korean Kia.

2022 Chevrolet Spark Fuel Economy

Despite its teensy size and teeny engine, the Spark doesn't earn fantastic EPA estimates. - Caranddriver

The 2022 Chevrolet Spark is impressively frugal and manages efficient fuel figures. However, it lies at the bottom of the table, despite recording a combined mileage of 33 MPG. The 2022 Spark can average 30 MPG in the city and 37 MPG on the highway. But its smaller fuel tank that has a holding capacity of 9-gallons feels underwhelmingly low. Consequently, it falls short on valuable range and can cover 270 and 333 miles in the city and on the highway, respectively, before stopping for a gas refill.

The 2021 Mitsubishi Mirage with its combined efficiency of 39 miles per gallon of fuel can dust any competitor in its way. However, it features one of the smaller fuel tanks in the segment that can hold only 9.2 gallons of fuel and as a result, its range does feel underwhelming.

Equate the 2021 Kia Rio’s efficiency of 36 MPG with its fuel tank of 11.9-gallons and you get the highest range in the segment as a reward. The 2021 Rio Hatchback can cover 393 and 488 miles in the city and on the highway, respectively, and averages a combined range of 448 miles.

2022 Chevrolet Spark Interior

"Despite the Spark’s lack of length, it has plenty of height, providing generous headroom for a subcompact hatchback"- KBB

The 2022 Chevrolet Spark’s cabin setup does not feel instantly appealing, but its practicality and usability are where its oneness lies. The interiors are not typically premium but they feel adequately upmarket for the price one pays. At $13,600, Spark is a viable proposition that adds an extensive list of standard features. Though the monochrome dash design does feel subtle and sophisticated, there are visible plastic components that run throughout the cabin.

2022 Chevrolet Spark Hatchback Interior Overview

However, with a clutter-free setup, the interior does look optimistic. There is a shiny surface that surrounds the centrally-placed infotainment system that looks pricey and the digital gauge cluster is one of the most quirky elements on offer on the inside. The seats feel adequately comfortable however, the rear passengers might feel some constraints due to the compromised legroom. The 2022 Spark can seat four passengers only, however, what we do like, in particular, is how supple the seats feel, even on imperfect road conditions.

The 2022 Chevrolet Spark offers two upholstery options, depending on the trim you opt for. Like its rear seats, the cargo capacity is also low. It manages 11.1 cubic feet of space with all seats in an upright position. However, Chevrolet does provide an option of folding rear seats that can increase the existing capacity to 27.2 cubic feet.

Trunk Capacity (cubic feet)

The 2021 Kia Rio and Mitsubishi Mirage gain ascendancy by seating an extra passenger. The space available to the front and rear seat occupants, however, differs by the slightest of margins. Both hatchbacks feature ultra-modern cabin setups like the Chevrolet Spark and it is difficult to declare a certain winner based on fit and quality.

In terms of cargo capacity, the 2022 Chevrolet Spark lurks at the bottom of the table. While Kia sports the highest trunk volume at 17.4 cubic feet, the Mitsubishi remains behind marginally having a total cargo capacity of 17.1 cubic feet. However, fold the rear seats down and the 2021 Mirage manages 47 cubic feet of space, which is the highest in the segment.

Some salient interior features of the 2022 Chevrolet Spark include:

  • Single-zone Front Air Conditioning
  • Front Door Pockets
  • Cloth/Leather Upholstery
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel (available on all except the base level trim)
  • Winter/Summer Floor Mat’s Package
  • Interior Air Filtration
  • Interior Protection Package

How intuitive is the infotainment system on the 2022 Chevrolet Spark?

The 2022 Spark makes use of the brand’s Infotainment 3 system that is a rather intuitive and user-friendly infotainment system that does not have an inherent and steep learning curve to it.

2022 Chevrolet Spark Hatchback Infotainment System

The controls are easy to understand and with the availability of basic functions as buttons and knobs, despite a 7-inch touchscreen add to the practicality of the setup. As standard, it comes equipped with features like an AM/FM Stereo and USB Connection. The central display unit also works in tandem with the rearview camera and the Chevrolet hatchback fits either a four or six-speaker sound system.

Some of the standout infotainment features on offer with the 2022 Chevrolet Spark include:

  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Satellite Radio
  • OnStar Navigation System
  • Steering-mounted audio controls
  • Voice Recognition System

2022 Chevrolet Spark Exterior

"The entire look is generally agreeable, while the large glass areas promote decent outward vision"- KBB

The 2022 Chevrolet Spark continues unchanged from the outgoing model and we do not have any complaints about it. The hatchback looks striking, appealing, and follows a distinct design strategy. The blacked-out grille up front, the LED daytime running lights, and front fog lights give it quite a premium fascia.

The design of the 2022 Spark is far from being complicated. Each body line and curve are gracefully tended to and the rather upright stance at the rear looks fitting and catchy for a car in its segment. However, apart from basic design elements, features like the rear spoiler, chrome lining, and rear door integrated handle elevate the design exponentially. Undoubtedly, Chevrolet has made the Spark keeping in mind modern design cues and has successfully managed to be both contemporary and upmarket.

The 2022 Chevrolet Spark is relatively lighter and weighs 2,246 lbs. It is, however, the smallest in overall dimensions. It is the shortest vehicle at 143.1 inches and has a wheelbase that measures 93.9 inches. While its ground clearance is not yet known, it stands at a total width and height of 62.8 and 58.4 inches, respectively.

The 2021 Kia Rio and 2021 Mitsubishi Mirage are larger hatchbacks. While the former is the heaviest at 2,765 lbs, the latter is the lightest weighing 2,095 lbs. The Kia is the longest hatchback in the segment at 160 inches and sports a wheelbase of 101.6 inches. The Mitsubishi on the other hand is the tallest and has a total ground clearance of 59.4 and 6.3 inches.

In terms of design, the 2021 Kia Rio is strikingly beautiful. However, the Mitsubishi Mirage misses out on the raw charm you will find on other cars. Some of the salient exterior features of the 2022 Chevrolet Spark include:

  • 15-inch all-season tires
  • Body-color painted side moldings
  • Rear Spoiler
  • Optional sunroof (available with the top-tier trim only)
  • Chrome embellishments
  • Large number of color options to choose from

2022 Chevrolet Spark Safety

"Safety features are less remarkable, except for the 10 airbags. But there’s the mandatory stability/traction control and rearview camera"- KBB

The 2022 Chevrolet Spark has not been rated by federal and non-federal agencies. However, with an abundant number of features that it packs, its ratings are suspected to be class-competing. As standard, the Chevrolet makes use of disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the rear. It comes equipped with specifications like 4-wheel ABS, tire pressure monitoring system, and daytime running lights. Some of its other standout safety specifications include:

  • Emergency Braking Assist
  • Traction and Stability Control
  • Passenger Airbag Occupant Sensing Deactivation
  • Post Collision Safety System
  • Dual front and rear side airbags
  • Dusk Sensing Headlamps
  • Anti-theft Alarm System (with the higher-level trims)
  • Fog Lamps (available on all trims except the base variant)

2022 Chevrolet Spark Competition

2022 Chevrolet Spark vs 2021 Kia Rio

Though the 2021 Kia Rio is priced diminutively higher than its competitors, it delivers performance that justifies its price tag. Its engine is the most powerful in the segment and is the quickest and fastest performing hatchback. Its impressive performance does not have a bearing on its efficiency and it rides smoothly. While the CVT does feel noisy at higher speeds, the drive quality is appreciable.

2021 Kia Rio

When compared to the 2022 Chevrolet Spark, both hatchbacks have similar front and rear row space, but the Kia can seat an extra passenger. It is also a better-looking vehicle and sports an upmarket cabin design. Amongst the two, we recommend opting for the 2021 Kia Rio for it provides better value for money and grants an enriching experience.

2022 Chevrolet Spark vs 2021 Mitsubishi Mirage

The 2021 Mitsubishi Mirage will etch its name in the segment by being the most efficient hatchback that is just shy of the 40 MPG mark. However, its frugality comes at the cost of its performance and with a rather underwhelming engine that produces the lowest outputs in the segment, the Mirage fails to impress the buyers.

2021 Mitsubishi Mirage

But when compared to the 2022 Chevrolet Spark, the 2021 Mirage can seat an extra passenger. It also sports a premium interior setup. However, its cargo capacity is the highest in the segment. Despite a refreshed design with the latest model, Mitsubishi lacks refinement and a premium aura to its design. While the decision between the two is a hard one to make, we would opt for Spark for its extensive list of standard features.

2022 Chevrolet Spark Final Verdict

The 2022 Chevrolet Spark is affordable, offers a multitude of trims, and is an exquisite performer that gives its competitors a run for their money. Despite falling in the sub $20000-category it feels premium and upmarket. While the exterior design is appreciable and features a number of plush elements, the interior setup does have some bland materials including plastic embellishments that run through the dash.

However, in the segment that it falls, the 2022 Chevrolet Spark is expected to be a nimble driver and it stands true to its claim by being highly agile and versatile. While the CVT transmission isn’t the best, the manual unit does its job with great aplomb. By providing high value for the money spent, the subcompact hatchback is one of the better options in the segment, well, until Mitsubishi and Kia announce the arrival of 2022 MYs of their hatchbacks.
