An experience of holding a prestigious place in the automobile industry for more than 80 years does speak in itself for this gigantic SUV by the name of Chevrolet Suburban. For the 2021 model year, the SUV entered the 12th generation which saw a lot of radical changes like the trade of live axle and leaf springs for a better independent rear multilink suspension along with coil springs. Since the Suburban went through quite a bit of makeup for 2021, the changes for 2022 won’t be extensive.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The SUV in standard configuration will continue to be sourced by a 5.3L V8, which is capable of producing 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque. The interior of the new Suburban is large and luxurious enough to seat 8 people comfortably. Which trim you should go for?

Chevrolet has offered a wide range of options for catering to every level of customers. But if we have to choose one trim, we will go with the Premier trim as it brings an ideal balance of performance, comfort, and value. Features like 20-inch aluminum wheels, memory power tilt and telescopic steering wheel, keyless entry with push-start button, and more make it the most value for money proposition. If you want to go all out with power, you can opt for the top-end High Country trim which comes with a more powerful V8 that is capable of putting out 420 hp.

Release Date

Till now, there is no information about the release date of the 2022 Suburban, but looking at the previous year’s trend, we can expect the SUV to be available by the end of this year.

2022 Chevrolet Suburban Engine and Performance

Raw and ruthless power is what is expected from an SUV of this size and class, and Chevrolet has offered two gasoline V8s along with a diesel six-cylinder for the model year 2022. The standard configured engine is a 5.3L V8 making 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque. The other V8 is a 420 hp 6.2L V8 which can produce a gigantic torque figure of 460 lb-ft of torque. Both the engines come mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission and transfer all the power to the rear wheels as standard. One can opt for the AWD option for an added premium.

2022 Chevrolet Suburban SUV Front Angle View

Apart from these gas-guzzling V8s for ultimate power under the hood, the SUV also has a practical option in the form of a 3.0L Duramax six-cylinder engine capable of putting out impressive figures of 277 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. The SUV, in its standard configuration, can cross the 60 mph mark in 7.2 seconds and completes a quarter-mile in around 15.5 seconds. The 2022 Model of the SUV will top out at a governor-limited 113 mph.

The rivals in the competition are at par with the GM twins, especially the Ford Explorer, which manages to overpower every SUV in the segment by offering class-leading torque and acceleration numbers. The 2022 Ford Expedition uses its popular EcoBoost 3.5L V6, which helps it in offering 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. The Nissan Armada puts out the best power figure of 400 hp. The only silver lining in favor of the Chevrolet Suburban is its cheap price tag, which although is not a big number to affect the decision making of any consumer in the market.

2022 Chevrolet Suburban Fuel Economy

The Chevrolet Suburban has two gasoline V8s to offer, thus one cannot expect some fuel economy numbers which will match a compact sedan. The most efficient configuration is the diesel engine, with ratings of 21 mpg city and 27 highway. The standard 5.3-liter V-8 is going to be slightly on the thriftier side than the optional 6.2-liter V-8, however, both engines halt at just 20 MPG on highways. The SUV comes with a fuel tank capacity of 28 gallons, resulting in a combined range of 504 miles.

The EcoBoost engine of the Ford Expedition Max once again helps it to take a leap against the rivals with class-leading fuel economy numbers, measuring17 MPG in the city, 23 MPG on the highway, and 19 MPG combined. The least practical of the lot comes out to be the Japanese SUV, offering 14 MPG in the city, 19 MPG on the highway, and 16 MPG combined. Nissan has also equipped the SUV with the smallest fuel tank in the competition, leading to an unimpressive range of 416 miles combined.

2022 Chevrolet Suburban Interior

Since the SUV stepped into the fifth generation for 2020, the cabin is not expected to undergo any major changes, however, the SUV has a decent set of features and materials to feel kind of opulent and definitely comfortable inside. A 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster behind the steering wheel helps the cabin to become more attractive, whereas the 10.2-inch infotainment system at the center of the dashboard gives the driver and passenger enough ease to control all the features inside.

2022 Chevrolet Suburban SUV Front Row Seats

As standard, the SUV comes with a seating capacity of 8, but that changes to 7 in the top two trims. Although, one gets the option for equipping their SUV with captain seats in the second row. The 2022 Suburban offers 10-way and 8-way power-adjustable seats for driver and passenger, respectively. Apart from this, the seats also have leather and perforated leather upholstery for higher trims. Behind the third row, the SUV has a cargo capacity of 41.5 cubic feet.

The GM twins manage to offer a best-in-class cargo capacity of 41.5 cubic feet, whereas the Armada looks tiny in comparison with only 16.5 cubic feet of space. Standout interior features include:

  • 10.2-inch touchscreen
  • Apple CarPlay
  • Android Auto
  • SiriusXM (all-access trial package)
  • USB ports including Type-C
  • 9-speaker Bose system

2022 Chevrolet Suburban Exterior

The new Chevrolet Suburban has gained a lot of appraisal for its exterior styling. The Suburban does not shy away from displaying its huge size instead of trying to slim it down. The boxy nature and a massive front grille up front make the SUV a looker for the segment.

2022 Chevrolet Suburban SUV

Chevrolet has heavily borrowed from the Silverado, which results in the SUV gaining high sides. The 2022 Suburban also offers large side windows, creating excellent sightlines for passengers in all three rows and letting more light into the cabin. The Off-road oriented Z71 trim comes out to be the most aggressive option as it wears a unique front fascia with a steeper approach angle.

Comparing the big SUVs in the segment will tell you that every other option is going to provide you decent space inside while offering a practical ground clearance to take your SUV anywhere on the go. The length of the Nissan Armada is smaller than the other three, and the same can be seen when putting it in front of the rivals in terms of wheelbase. Despite being the smallest, the 2022 Nissan Armada https://www.carhp.com/nissan/armada-2022 comes out to be the heaviest option at 5,672 lbs, followed by GMC, Chevrolet, and Ford at 5,633, 5,616, and 5,.534 lbs, respectively. 2022 Chevrolet Suburban Safety

The 2022 Chevrolet Suburban is yet to undergo the safety tests done by the safety testing agencies such as the NHTSA and IIHS. However, we do have the ratings for the 2021 model which will definitely give us a solid idea about the structural strength of the SUV, which further helps in keeping the passengers safe. The 2021 Suburban has received an overall rating of 4 stars from the NHTSA, which includes a 3-star rating for the rollover test.

Apart from the structural strength, Chevrolet has offered the SUV a variety of safety features. Also, few advanced measures like forward collision warning, lane departure warning, crash imminent braking, and dynamic brake support are part of the SUV. Standout safety features include:

  • Pre and post-collision safety system
  • Remote anti-theft alarm system
  • Emergency brake assist
  • Dusk sensing headlamps

2022 Chevrolet Suburban Competition

2022 Chevrolet Suburban vs. 2022 Ford Expedition MAX

The Ford Expedition and Chevrolet Suburban have been rivals for a good time now. The SUV from Ford gives good competition to the Chevrolet Suburban, rather manages to beat Chevrolet in most of the areas.

2022 Ford Expedition MAX Front Angle View

The 2022 Expedition offers good space inside, and the cargo space is also decent. The popular EcoBoost engine of the Expedition easily offers better power and torque figure, resulting in a better real-world performance. The only area where the Suburban enjoys an advantage is the space inside. If we have to choose between the two, the Expedition MAX will be our choice.

2022 Chevrolet Suburban vs. 2021 GMC Yukon XL

Since GMC and Chevrolet come under the same parent company, the GMC Yukon XL very happily shares most of the components with the 2022 Chevrolet Suburban. The one thing GMC does better than the Chevrolet is offering better interior design and quality, and we can prove that by juxtaposing the interior of two siblings.

2021 GMC Yukon XL Front Angle View

One can also see some other areas where things are tweaked to differentiate the two. However, the GMC Yukon XL comes out to be a little more expensive than the 2021 Chevrolet Suburban, which we think is not worth the extra price. All in all, the 2022 Chevy Suburban offers better value for money between the two siblings.

2022 Chevrolet Suburban vs. 2022 Nissan Armada

Comparing the Japanese offering with the American Chevrolet gives out interesting results. While the Nissan Armada comes out to be the more powerful and speedy option as it offers better power, torque, and acceleration numbers, but it falls flat when practicality is in question.

2022 Nissan Armada Front Angle View

The Nissan Armada offers the least fuel economy numbers along with the smallest fuel tank. Apart from this, the SUV also falls short of space for passengers as well as cargo in comparison to the Suburban. Thus, if practicality is what you crave, the 2022 Suburban is the better option, otherwise, the Nissan Armada can offer better engine performance for you to ride the SUV.

2022 Chevrolet Suburban Final Verdict

Standing strong in the market for almost 90 years is not an easy task, however, the Chevrolet Suburban has achieved this feat with ruggedness as well as style. The SUV provides you good space for the passengers and cargo, few powerful engine options, and various other things. The SUV also gives you all the practicality you want from your family hauler. When comparing the SUV with the rivals, few areas are there where it falls behind, nonetheless, the SIUV has all that is needed from an SUV of this segment. In all its entirety, we recommend this SUV as it stands as a perfect combination of class, comfort, power, and legacy in your garage.
