The 2017 Chevy Suburban is, beyond a doubt, one of the larger SUVs in the market today. The rugged ladder on frame chassis and all-terrain mobility with a 4 wheel drive powertrain further compliment the massive road presence of the SUV.

With a base price of just a shy below $50,000 and hordes of optional extras, the SUV is more utilitarian and luxurious than ever. The American icon aims to carry forward its legacy with a tried and tested approach in its latest iteration.

Features

5.0/10

There are a total of 3 trims namely the LS, LT, and Premier. A 5.3L V8 motor paired to a 6-speed auto transmission is standard on all trims while 4WD powertrain is on offer as well. The base LS trim carries a price tag of $49,915 and features such as LED tail lamps, 8-inch touch display, and manual folding side mirrors come as standard. Moving further up the ladder, there is the mid-table LT trim with a price tag of $55,045 with features like Bose premium audio system, programmable power liftgate as standard.

At the top of the table is the range-topping Premier trim which is almost $10,000 dearer than the lower LT trim. HID headlamps, heated steering wheel, and leather upholstery come as standard on the top trim.

"… the Suburban is an eager partner in all kinds of outdoor adventures, and few vehicles deliver so much capability at this price point."- Edmunds

Engine and Transmission

The engine that does duty on the 2017 Suburban is a 5.3L V8 EcoTec3 motor paired to a 6-speed automatic gearbox. The engine churns out 355 hp at 5600 rpm and 383 lb-ft of torque. The engine might not be the sprightliest of the lot but is certainly one of the most refined ones. It does its duties with elegance and grace.

Compared to other rivals, the Chevy Suburban is actually the least powered car with 355 hp. The most powerful and also the cheapest car is the Nissan Armada with 390 hp.

Acceleration

Being a gigantic SUV, acceleration is not the strongest suite of the Chevy Suburban. It does a 0-60mph sprint in a not too great 7.3 seconds while a quarter of a mile comes up in 15.6 seconds. The car picks up at a leisurely pace, takes its time to gather momentum but holds its speed in a calm and composed manner.

In comparison, the fastest car in the segment is the Nissan Armada at 6.5 seconds. The slowest car in the segment is the GMC Yukon at 7.5 seconds. The Chevy Suburban is not too far behind at 7.3 seconds.

Ride and Handling

The Chevy Suburban is one of the very few SUVs that can be cruise the highway like it was meant to do, tow heavy stuff without breaking a sweat and be your complete outdoor partner all in one giant package. The magnetic ride control suspension eats up big bumps with relative ease just as same as the interior which eats up all the outside noises.

But, moving through tight spaces and sharp turns requires one to tussle with the steering wheel for quite a while and it's certainly not as agile as its crossover counterparts.

Braking

The Chevy Suburban is a seriously long and hefty SUV and requires some serious stopping power. In order to install an efficient braking system, Chevy has loaded the Suburban with a set of 13-inch brake rotors at the front and 13.6-inch rotors at the rear. The brakes can be a little unpredictable at times but remain effective during most uses.

In comparison with rivals, the Chevy does a 60-0 mph halt in under 131 ft. All the rivals in the segment are in the same ballpark with a few ft above or below.

Fuel Economy

The big size of the Chevy Suburban SUV comes at a price of the fuel economy. The Chevy is able to return a paltry fuel economy of 19 mpg combined.

Interior

8.6/10
“As you'd expect from the full-size footprint, 2017 Chevrolet Suburban's interior is indeed oversized, yet it's really only spacious for the first two seating rows. Cabin materials are noticeably nicer than rivals, particularly for LT and Premier trims. From the driver seat, visibility is understandably limited by the sheer size of the vehicle, but it's better than you might expect.”- Edmunds

Seating and Comfort

The Chevy Suburban offers comfortable seating for up to 8 occupants. The seats are well appointed even in the last row and there is never a shortage of space inside the cabin. The front seats and the mid seats are both cooled and ventilated. The interior itself does complete justice to price tag with the use of expensive soft-touch materials all around.

In comparison, the Chevy Suburban is the most spacious vehicle in the segment. The Toyota Sequoia loses out to the Suburban only because of a lack of headspace throughout the cabin but still manages to take the 2nd spot.

Cargo volume

Storing luggage is never going to be the slightest of the issue on the Chevy Suburban with a boot space of 39.3 ft behind the 3rd Row. Both the 2nd row and the 3rd row can be brought down if the need arises to reveal a boot space of 76.7 ft.

In comparison, no vehicle in the segment comes even slightly close to the Chevy Suburban in terms of cargo volume.

Exterior

6.3/10
“The 2017 Chevy Suburban’s exterior shares nothing of design or components with its Silverado pickup-truck counterpart. Chevy’s exterior designers had a lot of space at their disposal and used it well; this big SUV has a presence that is decidedly commanding.”- Kelley Blue Book

Dimension and Weight

Bigger is better in the world of the Chevy Suburban. The SUV can easily crowd and intimidate all the smaller crossovers and hatchbacks when it gets side by side with them in traffic. The design itself, however, follows the same old boxy outlays with long and sharp lines all over the body. Notable, the SUV weighs in at 5587 lbs, which is hardly surprising, to say the least.

In comparison, the Chevy Suburban has the longest wheelbase and longest overall length at 130 inches and 224.4 inches respectively. The heaviest car in the segment is the Toyota Sequoia a 5730 lbs.

Exterior Features

Some key exterior features on the Chevy Suburban are

  • 20-inch wheels
  • Split headlamps
  • Fog lamps
  • Roof rails

Safety

Being one of the oldest vehicles in the world, the Chevy Suburban has a legacy to carry forward which is why no corners have been cut in the most important dept., safety. In crash tests carried out by major agencies, the car scored a minimum of 4 stars in all the sections. There is also a complete suite of active safety features to ensure the well being of all the occupants.

  • Frontal and side-impact air bags1 for driver and front passenger, driver inboard seat-mounted side-impact Front Center Air Bag (requires front bucket seats) and head-curtain side-impact air bags for all rows in outboard seating positions
  • Power-programmable door locks with lockout protection
  • Teen Driver technology
  • Daytime Running Lamps, with automatic exterior lamp control

  • Tire Pressure Monitor System air pressure sensors in each tire with pressure display in Driver Information Center, includes Tire Fill Alert

Competition

Chevy Suburban VS GMC Yukon

Both the GMC Yukon and the Chevy Suburban are fully sized SUVs that offer to seat for up to 8 passengers. They also sport the same engine with the same figures and almost equal towing capacity. In the looks department, both of them pretty toe to toe but in our opinion, the Chevy has a slight edge.

But, a few handy features such as hill descent control and a slightly better-equipped cabin allow the suburban to go ahead of the GMC Yukon.

Chevy Suburban VS Nissan Armada

Unlike the Chevy Suburban, the Nissan Armada is a fairly new offering that been developed from scratch. The Armada features a sleek and sexy design with a lot of sharp lines that accent the exterior. Even when it comes to engine power, the Nissan has almost 50 hp more than the Suburban.

But when it comes to sheer utility, the Suburban is hard to beat. There is more seating, more towing capacity, and more interior space.

Chevy Suburban VS Toyota Sequoia

Just like the Chevy Suburban, the Toyota Sequoia features a utilitarian design which offers more to those looking for workability rather than shows off features. The car can tow a substantial amount of weight and carry the same 8 passengers. Pair that with the reliability of Toyota and the car becomes fairly hard to triumph over.

But, the Chevy Suburban is a tad bit more flexible vehicle with its folding rows and it also features an upmarket interior which is more functional too.

Final Verdict

The Chevy Suburban has been around for almost 70 years and for good reason. The car aims to solve the issues of American audiences and fits their requirement like a glove. Bigger than life, utilitarian and comfortable are the most appropriate words to describe the Chevy Suburban. If one needs to haul heavy loads, travel with a big family and stay comfortable even during the longest of the drives, the Chevy Suburban is the real deal.
