The Chevrolet Traverse is an impeccable offering from the American manufacturer and has now entered a new generation. The SUV starts at $31,000 and goes against the Ford Explorer and the Honda Pilot. The newer-gen Traverse looks better and is a step up in every sense of the word. 2018 marks the debut of the newer generation and, hence, has a lot of complaints registered on the NHTSA. The crossover has been criticized for its transmission, electrical system, and brakes. It has also accumulated 2 recalls for the model year as well. Let’s see what the most common issues were and why it was recalled a couple of times.

2018 Chevrolet Traverse Problems

Electrical issues:

  • Melting electrical connections: The 2018 Chevrolet Traverse owners have reported several electrical connections melting. The issue crops up due to an excessive flow of current. These connections include headlight and tail lamp connections as well. Although there are no electrical fires, owners say the melted connections pose a threat to the occupants inside.
  • Auto start/stop issues: There have been many complaints about a malfunction in the auto start/stop switch that does not restart the SUV after coming to a halt. This is a major inconvenience and has raised concerns about the same happening at highway speeds. Such an issue can cause a collision.
  • Infotainment issues: People have reported the infotainment system to be nothing short of problematic. There are frequent disconnections in the Bluetooth system. The whole system freezes, for which the vehicle has to be restarted for it to work properly. The backup camera doesn’t show the objects behind the vehicle. The freezing infotainment system also distorts the speaker output and causes headaches.

Mechanical issues:

  • “Shift to Park” issue: The mentioned issue is the most rampant problem in the 2018 Traverse which has affected several owners across the States. When the warning message pops up in the instrument cluster, the SUV cannot be shut down and the doors do not unlock. The owners did find out a remedy by disconnecting the battery but that left the vehicle unlocked. The issue is reported to go away if the vehicle is left on for 15 minutes or so. The issue has been reported to the manufacturer and action is awaited.
  • Transmission shuddering: The 9-speed transmission in the Traverse shudders at low speeds and, in some cases, shuts down the vehicle. This shuddering is very violent and gives a hard jerk to move the vehicle forward.
  • Power steering issues: The steering in the Traverse is said to lose its power assistance. The loss of power assistance makes low-speed maneuverability very difficult. The mechanical steering was unaffected but without that, the steering weighs up significantly.
  • Parking brake issues: People have reported the parking brakes to be very inconsistent. People say that the parking brake engages on its own, causing the vehicle to slow down. In some cases, the parking brake doesn’t engage and causes the vehicle to move unintentionally.

Missing bolts in the start/stop accumulator could cause a transmission oil leak. The oil leakage increases the risk of a crash and, if present near an ignition source, can light the car on fire.

The recall began on December 15, 2020. The dealers will inspect the transmission accumulator and replace it if the bolts are missing.

Improperly attached side curtain airbags may not perform as they should, increasing the risk of injury in a crash.

The recall began on May 24, 2021. The dealers will replace the weld nuts.

Should you buy the 2018 Chevrolet Traverse?

The 2018 Chevrolet Traverse is a commendable vehicle but has seen a lot of issues in its debut model year. The electrical problems have a quick fix while the “Shift to Park” issue needs more attention from the manufacturer. If you want to go for a used Traverse, keep a close eye on the gearbox and the maintenance records.
