Overall Rating

The 2022 Chevrolet Traverse is a spacious and comfortable mid-size SUV that is motivated by a powerful V6 motor. The 310 hp V6 motor ensures that this Chevy is quick to build pace and offers peppy acceleration. Being a family-focused SUV, the ride quality remains calm and comfortable with lots of insulation provided to filter out most of the exterior noise. That said, the Chevy Traverse is a strong contender in its segment with spacious cabin and cargo and a bold appeal and for this review, we have compared the 2022 Traverse with the likes of Kia Telluride, GMC Acadia, and Honda Pilot. While a couple of honorable mentions include Ford Explorer, Toyota Highlander, and Volkswagen Atlas.

2022 Chevrolet Traverse Engine and Performance

8.0/10

The 2022 Chevrolet Traverse carries forward the same powertrain seen last year. Thus under the hood, the 2022 Traverse gets a naturally aspirated 3.6-liter V6 engine that produces 310-hp and 266 lb-ft of torque. The engine is married to a 9-speed automatic transmission powering the front wheels as standard, while all-wheel drive is available as optional. The engine is refined and power delivery is smooth and silent, enough that it is hardly vocal while idling.

2022 Chevrolet Traverse Engine Bay

The 9-speed transmission is quick, but not the quickest, although the smooth shifts are applaudable. The 2022 Chevy Traverse is quite quick for its size doing 0-60 MPH in just 6.5 seconds and taking another 8.6 seconds to cover a quarter-mile. The ride and handling of the Chevy Traverse are perfectly balanced between athletic and comfortable. The steering is light, yet very responsive, and the driver will have no difficulty piloting this big SUV.

The 2022 Chevrolet Traverse leads the table in terms of power and torque figures. Among the lot, the GMC Acadia is the only SUV that offers a turbo-four as the base engine while the rest of the SUVs get a V6 as standard. When it comes to performance there is no denying the fact that the lighter Pilot is the quickest of the lot beating the Traverse in 0-60 MPH run by 0.3 seconds margin.

2022 Chevrolet Traverse Fuel Economy

9.0/10

The 2022 Chevrolet Traverse isn't frugal and the V6 is a gas-guzzler returning an EPA estimated gas mileage of 18/27/21 MPG in city/highway/combined respectively. While the Traverse with the AWD sees a drop of 1 MPG in the city and 2 MPG on the highway. To compensate for the lower gas mileage the bow-tie brand has given the Chevy Traverse a bigger 19.4-gallon fuel tank that is enough to last 407 miles from a full tank of gas under mixed driving conditions.

2022 Chevrolet Traverse Interior

7.0/10

The 2022 Chevrolet Traverse has received some minor upgrades inside the cabin, which include new upholstery options. Apart from that most of the things on the inside are unchanged. This means the interior stills remain ergonomically sorted and offers spacious and comfortable seating for seven or eight passengers depending upon the seating configuration you choose. Opting for the second-row captain chairs, which though reduces the seat count from eight to seven, adds the most comfortable seating in the cabin. The overall interior has a very clean design with a subtle outlook, and yet still manages to look modern and upright.

2022 Chevrolet Traverse Dashboard

The seating material varies from fabric to leather with the leather quality even better on the top-end High Country trim. The seats in general with or without leather are very comfortable and offer a good amount of support. What's even better is that even the third-row seats can fit adults easily. The cargo capacity is adequate to pack enough for the weekend-off trip. The 2022 Chevy Traverse with all the seats up has 23.0 cubic feet of cargo space while the third-row and middle row seats can be further folded for increased cargo space.

8.0/10

The 2022 Chevrolet Traverse this year comes with subtle yet noticeable changes to the front and rear fascia. The front grille has been revised while the headlights and taillights have been updated to a more aggressive design. Also, the lower part of the front bumper is blacked out to give it a more rugged look and reduce the front visual bulk.

2022 Chevrolet Traverse Safety

7.0/10

The 2022 Chevrolet Traverse now adds more to its list of standard safety aids. The base trim will now equip six new standard features that were optional in the previous model years. There’s an optional adaptive cruise control-advanced system for the LT, RS, and Premier trims, and it remains standard in the High Country model. The list also adds GM’s Safety Alert seat as standard on Premier and High Country models. The 2022 Chevrolet Traverse will retain a robust structure crafted with high-strength steel making it one of the safer SUVs in the segment. Although the 2022 Chevrolet Traverse is yet to be tested by the federal agencies.

2022 Chevrolet Traverse IIHS Crash-Test

But being mechanically similar to the 2021 model we can take last year's rating as a benchmark. The 2021 Chevrolet Traverse had received impressive 5-star ratings from the NHTSA while IIHS gave it the highest rating of “Good” in all its six parameters and named it the "Top Safety Pick".

Safety Features:

  • Automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection,

2022 Chevrolet Traverse Competition

9.0/10

2022 Chevrolet Traverse vs 2022 GMC Acadia

The 2022 GMC Acadia is the corporate cousin of the Chevrolet Traverse yet both are very different in terms of what they offer. The Acadia is priced lower due to its smaller base engine and powered by that it is also very fuel-efficient. Compared to that the Traverse is more powerful and quicker than the Acadia.

2022 GMC Acadia

Coming inside, the Traverse is the most spacious and practical SUV hands-down. So the Traverse for the bigger engine and practical cabin is a better pick between the two.

2022 Chevrolet Traverse vs 2022 Kia Telluride

The 2022 Chevrolet Traverse is a more eye-catchy SUV between the two rivals as it offers a bold new design and rugged pick-up truck alike front fascia. That said, despite a bigger displacement engine, the 2022 Telluride is underpowered on paper. But in real-world driving, both SUVs are very tractable and build speed without much of an issue.

2022 Kia Telluride

In terms of interior space, the Chevrolet Traverse is more spacious, but neither of the picks will feel cramped, even in the third-row seats. The cabin of the Telluride feels more upscale in comparison to the Chevy though. Thus if you want a features rich and spacious SUV then get the Telluride but if you can let go of some of the fancy features the Traverse isn't bad either.

2022 Chevrolet Traverse vs 2022 Honda Pilot

Both the SUVs are competitively matched, but the lighter Pilot is not only quicker but also more efficient than the Traverse. Both the SUVs are fun-to-drive within their limits and offer good driving dynamics.

2022 Honda Pilot

For space and practicality, there is no match to the Traverse. While the cabin quality is better on the Pilot making it more pleasant to be inside it. Depending upon the budget either of the SUVs remains a good buy in the midsize segment.

2022 Chevrolet Traverse Final Verdict

The 2022 Chevrolet Traverse offers a powerful and refined drivetrain with good driving dynamics for its size. The fresh new design and tweaks to the interior give the Traverse a new lease of life. The standard safety features list now gets more features added making it an even safer SUV. While the spacious cabin and cargo space on the Traverse remains its USP. Thus the 2022 Chevy Traverse remains a great value for money in the mid-size SUV segment.
