The Chevrolet lineup not only showcases shiny yet potent pickups but also has some sophisticated SUV options to choose from. Recently, General Motors announced the arrival of the delayed 2022 Chevrolet Traverse. The current generation of the full-size four-door crossover utility vehicle (CUV) has been in the American market since 2017, and the brand was coming up with the mid-cycle enhancement(MCE) in 2021 itself, but Coronavirus had different plans for everyone on this planet.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

Now the 2022 Chevrolet Traverse is soon to hit the dealership with many significant updates ranging from interiors to exteriors. The 2022 Chevrolet Traverse will remain a strong crossover pick in the segment with spacious and cargo-friendly interiors, a powerful powertrain, and bold appeal. Let’s look into what the 2022 Chevrolet Traverse has to offer, and how does it stand against its rivals - the Hyundai Palisade, Kia Telluride, andFord Explorer - after the facelift.

2022 Chevrolet Traverse Features

The Chevy Traverse receives a mild makeover for the model year 2022, and we can expect its release by October 2021. Other than the aforementioned revised styling, the Traverse incorporates a number of features from its Premier and High Country trims as standard for the 2022 model year, including the 8” infotainment system and LED headlamps with DRLs. The Traverse also receives a digital information cluster for the driver. Unfortunately, these changes leave a lot of the features in the much anticipated High Country trim to one's imagination as there have been no official announcements from GM or Chevy yet. Six trims are mentioned below, however, the seventh trim named RS gets reviewed separately.

We Recommend

The trim levels of the Traverse exhibit erratic pricing, especially as one goes up the ladder. Starting off as a very valuable proposition in its L trim, the Traverse becomes slightly overpriced in its High Country or Premier trims. Therefore, we recommend the LT Leather trim for the sole purpose of finding a good balance between value for money and comfort and convenience as the trim offers plenty in the name of features but doesn’t get too pricey either.

Price:

The 2022 Chevrolet Traverse has not been announced with a price tag, but we expect pricing to begin around the $30,000 mark, with higher trims getting quite expensive as we have seen before.

Release Date:

An official release date is yet to be announced by the American auto-giant but we can expect its release to be around October 2021.

2022 Chevrolet Traverse Engine and Performance

The 2022 Chevrolet Traverse has been announced with no changes to the powertrains. It will continue to be powered by a single-engine option, a naturally aspirated 3.6L V6 LFY engine that produces 310-hp and 266 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mashed to a seamless 9-speed automatic transmission powering the front wheels as standard, while all-wheel drive is available as optional.

The engine is refined and power delivery is smooth and silent, enough that it hardly penetrates the cabin. The 9-speed transmission is quick, but not the quickest, but the smooth shifts are applaudable. The 2022 Chevrolet Traverse is quite quick for its size, a 0-60 comes in just 6.9 seconds. The ride quality is versatile; it is perfectly balanced between swift and relaxed and manages to pull either easily. The steering is light, yet very responsive, and the driver will have no difficulty in longer routes, tight corners, or jam-packed roads.

The 2022 Chevrolet Traverse leads in terms of horsepower, refinement, and performance. But if turbo engines are what makes you smile at the end of the day, then the 2022 Ford Explorer has two engine offerings, one of which is a 2.3L Turbo Inline-4 with the best torque figures in the rivalry. Both 2022 Hyundai Palisade and 2022 Kia Telluride are identical under the hood and offer similar driving dynamics.

2022 Chevrolet Traverse Fuel Economy

The 2022 Chevrolet Traverse is refined and economical for its size and rides quality. The 3.6L V6 can pull off great deeds yet offer impressive 18/27/21 MPG in city/highway/combined runs. In real-world testing, even the all-wheel-drive has proven to be efficient as the Traverse delivered 27 MPG on the highway. These figures are the leading ones amongst its key competitors. To accompany the engine, a 19.4-gallon fuel tank is present, enough to last 407 combined miles on average.

The 2022 Chevrolet Traverse is impressively economical, but the rivals in the tables make it fall to the last spot. The small turbo block of theFord Explorer is what leads the other rivals in terms of efficiency. Ford offers 21 mpg in the city, 28 mpg on the highway, and 24 mpg combined. When comparing the overall range, again Ford wins the race by offering 446 miles combined.

2022 Chevrolet Traverse Interior

The 2022 Chevrolet Traverse has received some minor upgrades inside the cabin, which include new upholstery options. The interior stills remain ergonomically spacious and comfortable for 8-passengers. Buyers can also opt for the second-row captain chairs, which though reduces the count, but adds the most comfortable seating in the cabin. The overall interior has a very clean design with a subtle outlook, and it still looks modern and upright. The seating is very comfortable, supportive, and spacious, and even the third-row seats can fit adults easily. The cargo capacity is quite adequate to pack enough for the weekend-off trip. The cargo can fit 6 carry-on suitcases behind the third row to be exact.

The SUV also entertains the first-row occupants with most cubby storage. When it comes to quality and variety of materials, Chevrolet has prowess in offering opulent finish in the upper trims, and the same goes with the 2022 Chevrolet Traverse. Coming to infotainment, the 2022 Chevrolet Traverse adds an optional 8-inch display as gauge cluster and comes with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone connectivity. The standard touchscreen infotainment is intuitive and has an easy-to-use interface, and comes with various USB slots and 4G WiFi hotspot capabilities.

The Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride again offer almost identical cabin figures but are more upscale than the Traverse. The Ford Explorer is equally modern and upscale, along with an impressively roomy cabin. Major interior features include-

  • 8” digital information cluster
  • Second-row captains chair configuration
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • 8” infotainment display
  • 4G Wifi Hotspot connectivity

2022 Chevrolet Traverse Exterior

The 2022 Chevrolet Traverse has been announced with a makeover for the facelift. The tweaks include refreshed front fascia with the massive grille divided into two and the lower part completely blacked out. The narrow and sleek headlights and LED DRLs add aggression to the face. The rear supports multi-element rear LED tail lights, adding some flair to the looks. The facelift adds four new wheel designs to choose from. The SUV weighs 4,362 lbs and stands 7.2 inches above the ground.

The 2022 Chevrolet Traverse looks handsome and fresh with the facelift and is one of the most stylish crossovers to pick. The Kia Telluride’s bold front and dashing side stance look quite appealing as well. At last, it’s “beauty in the eyes of the beholder” and buyer’s choice among these leading SUVs in the segment. Major exterior highlights of the SUV are-

  • New LED headlights with DRLs
  • Multi-LED tail lights
  • Blacked out front bumper and lower grille
  • Painted alloy wheels
  • All-season tires

2022 Chevrolet Traverse Safety

The 2022 Chevrolet Traverse now adds more to its cart of safety aids. The base trim will now equip six new standard features that were optional in the previous model years. There’s an optional adaptive cruise control-advanced system for the LT, RS, and Premier trims, and it remains standard in the High Country model. The list also adds GM’s Safety Alert seat as standard on Premier and High Country models.

The 2022 Chevrolet Traverse will retain a robust structure crafted with high-strength steel along with 7 standard airbags with three-row head restraints, front occupancy sensor, and seatbelt pretensioners. The 2022 Chevrolet Traverse will have to wait to be tested on the ground by safety institutes, but the carried-over chassis will also carry the avouched safety ratings of the previous model year. The 2021 Chevrolet Traverse had received impressive 5-star ratings from the NHTSA while applauding overall “Good” safety ratings by the IIHS.

Notable safety features include:

  • Automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection,
  • Lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist
  • Automatic high-beam headlamps
  • Following-distance indicator
  • Forward collision alert

2022 Chevrolet Traverse Competition

2022 Chevrolet Traverse vs 2021 Hyundai Palisade

The 2022 Chevrolet Traverse is a more eye-catchy SUV between the two rivals as it offers a bold new design and rugged pick-up truck alike front fascia. Despite a bigger displacement engine, the 2021 Hyundai Palisade is quite underpowered to the Traverse, but in the real world, both SUVs offer great on-road manners. In terms of interior space, the Chevrolet Traverse is more spacious, but neither of the picks will feel cramped, even in the third-row seats. The cabin of the Palisade feels more sturdy and upscale in comparison to the Chevy Traverse.

2022 Chevrolet Traverse vs 2021 Kia Telluride

The 2022 Chevrolet Traverse is again more powerful and quicker than the Kia Telluride, but the latter boasts better economic figures than the Traverse. Being an identical sibling to the Palisade, the interiors of the Kia Telluride feel more modern and up-market than the Traverse. On paper, the Telluride seems to have a slight edge over the Traverse in terms of fuel efficiency, however, that may be negligible when it comes to real-world use.

2022 Chevrolet Traverse vs 2021 Ford Explorer

Both the American SUVs are competitively matched, but the smaller turbo engine under the hood of the 2021 Ford Explorer is more fun-to-drive and flaunts some leading efficiency figures too. The Explorer can equip just 7-passengers, giving the 2022 Chevrolet Traverse an edge as it can fit 8 in an arguably more spacious cabin. When it comes to driving manners, both the rival SUVs are quick, and very refined when cruising at highway speeds. The Chevrolet Traverse offers more on the top end, while the Ford Explorer has more torque to pull, but the Traverse remains a more sedate driver than the Ford, as the latter manufacturer does have a penchant for making cars drive more enthusiastically than they strictly should.

2022 Chevrolet Traverse Final Verdict

The 2022 Chevrolet Traverse offers great punch and refined driving dynamics for its size. The engine is quite powerful for the class, but it also costs it, it delivers not-so-fancy economical figures against its key competitors. The fresh new design and tweak interiors add some great features. The standard safety features list is extended, which competes for neck-to-neck to some of the 2022 Chevrolet Traverse rivals. The Traverse offers great value for money with an incredibly spacious and practical cabin. All things considered, it’s a great buy for families.
