The Chevrolet Trax has been a worthy contender in the compact crossover segment for over a while now. It is known for its compact body and wheelbase that together cater to sharp and dynamic handling in the corners. The company recently announced the 2022 Chevrolet Trax with some minor modifications all pertaining to the powertrain. Additionally, the All-wheel-drivetrain is now available for the 2022 Trax.

The 2022 Chevrolet Trax is a compact crossover that’s extremely maneuverable and is well suitable for short rides in the busy city lanes that handle tight corners and parking spaces well. Although it is a dependable vehicle with loads of storage space, it’s pretty outdated in terms of safety and design parameters. It competes with other crossovers like the Hyundai Kona, Buick Encore, and Mazda CX-30.

2022 Chevrolet Trax Features

The 2022 Chevrolet Trax is available in the same two trim options as its predecessor, LS, and LT. Both of the trims have the same old generic features and nothing’s much evolved. They share the same powertrain while a new all-wheel drive is available for both trims. Both of these variants come with a host of standard features while the key safety features were reserved for the optional Driver Confidence Package that would cost you another 500 bucks.

On a whole, there isn’t much of a difference between the two trims as most of the essential features like the 7-inch infotainment screen, keyless entry. Power mirrors and a six-speaker audio system were standard across both. While the LT adds up features like the heated power mirrors, leatherette seat trim, climate control, and LED DRLs. Additionally, we have various optional packages like the Midnight Edition Package and Premium Seat Package with which you can pump up the feature set.

We recommend

As we mentioned, there isn’t much of a difference between the two trims in terms of convenience features. So we recommend opting for the base LS trim with the Driver Confidence Package which would be a great combination of comfort and safety features. If you still feel like you’re missing out on the seating comforts, there is a Premium Seat Package too.

Release date

There’s no information about the release date but we may expect the Chevy Trax to hit the stores by the end of fall 2021.

2022 Chevrolet Trax Engine and Performance

The 2022 Chevrolet Trax lineup would be driven by a 1.4-liter turbocharged Inline-4 engine, good for producing 155 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque, controlled by a 6-speed Automatic transmission. This year, the engine was tweaked and refined to produce 25 horses more than its previous generation to power all of its wheels.

2022 Chevrolet Trax SUV in acceleration mode

The Chevrolet Trax can be had with an all-wheel drivetrain too while the front-wheel-drive is standard. On the performance side, the 2021 Trax drew some fair amount of criticism for its slow shifting transmission and delay in routing the power to the wheels which for the 2022 MY would be finetuned and improvised. Since we don’t have the 0-60 figures for the 2022 iteration, we are considering the 2021 Trax’s figures and we may expect the crossover to hit 60 mph in under 9 seconds, considering the improvements in its engine for this year.

The 2022 Chevrolet Trax can’t keep up with competition as most of its rivals in the segment do a quick run of 0-60 mph in under 9 seconds easily, while the Mazda CX-30 could do the same in an impressive 7.8 seconds, leading the table. Going with the company’s claims, we may expect a more crispy and punchy performance from the 2022 Trax.

2022 Chevrolet Trax Fuel Economy

7.0/10

The 2022 Chevrolet Trax with a 4-cylinder engine underneath delivers a decent range of 26 mpg in the city, 31 mpg on the highway, and 27 mpg when combined. When compared to its predecessor, these figures seem depreciated as the new AWD unit could consume more fuel in exchange for performance. Despite that, the Trax puts returns a good amount of range in the class.

The Chevy Trax and Buick Encore feature a fuel tank of 14 gallons which is the highest among the competition. Also, the Hyundai Kona happens to be the most fuel-efficient of the lot, while the Encore offers the highest range due to its larger fuel tank capacity. The Mazda CX-30 on the other hand offers the best fuel efficiency on the highways and long roads which won’t demand frequent use of brakes.

2022 Chevrolet Trax Interior

8.0/10

As mentioned before, there are no changes with respect to the design, except for one aspect. Chevrolet discontinued the flat-folding front-rear passenger seat as there are many consumer complaints about its functionality. Apart from that, we do notice a similar approach from its predecessor. We have a 7-inch infotainment screen in the middle with a 3.5-inch multi-information driver display as standard across both the trims while the climate control is reserved for the LT trim only.

Talking about the seating, the base trim is offered with cloth upholstery seats and the owners of LT trim would enjoy the Simulated leather upholstery seats and a small storage drawer under the front passenger seat. Also standard is the 60/40 split-folding rear seats that account for a whopping 48.4 cubic feet of cargo space. The luggage compartment offers an adequate 18.7 cubic feet of cargo. The cabin is quite spacious and can easily accommodate 5 adults, although the rear legroom is cramped.

Of the competition, the Mazda CX-30 steals the show with a generous amount of room and well-sectionalized rear and front seating compartments to offer a comfortable seating space. Even though the Hyundai Kona has a spacious cabin, its rear seating room could be a concern. The Buick Encore also offers a decent seating room while its rear shoulder room might be a problem for large adults. Interior features of the 2022 Chevrolet Trax include:

  • 3.5-inch Driver information display
  • Automatic Climate control
  • Cloth upholstery seats in the base and Leatherette upholstery for LT
  • Heated steering wheel
  • 4-way manual driver seat
  • 60/40-split folding rear seats

How intuitive is the 2022 Chevrolet Trax’s Infotainment System?

The Chevrolet Trax has a lot to offer on the infotainment and connectivity front. It comes equipped with a 7-inch center-mounted infotainment system that supports all the connectivity options such as Bluetooth, AUX, and USB through which the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto could be enabled. Also available is the in-built Chevrolet interface which has pre-installed in-vehicle apps like Spotify,

The Weather Channel, Pandora, Marketplace, and the USA. An optional built-in Wi-Fi hotspot is available. Both the trims feature a 6-speaker audio system as standard. Highlights of the 2022 Chevrolet Trax infotainment include:

  • 7-inch infotainment touchscreen
  • 6-speaker audio system
  • Steering wheel mounted audio controls
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility
  • USB, Bluetooth, and AUX connectivity
  • AM/FM/HD radio and SiriusXM with 360L
  • MyChevrolet App
  • Available Built-in Wi-Fi Hotspot

2022 Chevrolet Trax Exterior

7.0/10

On the exterior, the 2022 Chevrolet Trax remains unchanged retaining all the cosmetic features like the 16-inch painted aluminum wheels that are stiffer but many customers stated that these contribute to additional road noise. Aesthetically, the Trax doesn't look pleasing and modern at all when compared to some of its contemporaries. The old-school design with flossy curves doesn’t really match the crossover framework.

2022 Chevrolet Trax SUV

The front matte grille combined with the hood that houses the classic Chevrolet logo makes the car look more brawny and again that’s served with 16-inch painted aluminum wheels which don’t suit the intended proportions. On the technical front, the base trim gets ample features like the Halogen reflector headlamps and body-colored power mirrors while the LT trims enjoy updated tech like the LED DRLs, LED taillights, and silver-painted skid plates on the front and rear.

Among the competitors, the Hyundai Kona is the lightest and the most compact crossover. And in fact, it's the most good-looking one too. It is followed by the Trax which is also the tallest of the lot and sports the most compact wheelbase which could help in taking sharp corners and lean direction changes. Features of 2022 Chevrolet Trax’s exterior include:

  • 16-inch painted aluminum wheels
  • LED daytime running lights
  • LED taillights
  • Rear-mounted Roof rails
  • Halogen reflector headlamps (Base) and Halogen projector-beam headlights (LT)
  • Front intermittent wipers

2022 Chevrolet Trax Safety

8.0/10

The 2022 Chevrolet Trax hasn’t been tested under the NHTSA and IIHS which would be done within a couple of months. While its predecessor, the 2021 Chevy Trax scored an excellent score of 5-star in the overall crash safety tests. Sadly, the Chevrolet Trax doesn't offer adequate driver-assistance tech and other safety features. Most of the advanced safety tech is bundled into the Driver-Confidence package as optional. Available features of Chevrolet Trax include::

  • Rear Vision camera
  • Rear child security door locks
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System
  • 10 Airbags
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (Optional)
  • Rear Park Assist (Optional)
  • Side impact beams
  • Traction control
  • Stability control

2022 Chevrolet Trax vs Mazda CX-30

Dimensionally, the Mazda CX-30 is larger than the Trax, so is the space offered by the CX-30. On the performance front, the Mazda CX-30 is superior in every attribute and it offers a balanced and joyful driving experience while the Chevrolet Trax seems underpowered and pale in comparison.

Mazda CX-30

2022 Chevrolet Trax vs Buick Encore

The Buick Encore and Chevrolet Trax are quite similar in engine, cargo, and fuel efficiency. But the Encore is more refined and performs well on the undulated roads. The Buick Encore even offers a nice cabin filled with some quality and soft-touch materials. The Chevrolet Trax boasts more horsepower and torque than the Encore but it doesn't make an active use of it.

Buick Encore

2022 Chevrolet Trax vs Hyundai Kona

On paper, the Hyundai Kona loses to the Chevrolet Trax in every aspect, but that's entirely different when it comes to the on-road performance. Despite its less powered Naturally Aspirated engine, the Kona offers a very composed ride and even its acceleration is punchy. Also, both the cars have to make nearly the same number of stops at the gas stations despite the higher MPG ratings of Trax. All in all, the Hyundai is a better value proposition than the Trax.

2022 Chevrolet Trax Final Verdict

At present, the compact crossover segment is literally a white-hot segment where we are getting to see a pool of new entrants with breakthrough innovations and features, while the 2022 Chevrolet Trax still lags way behind its contemporaries with its mediocre performance and practicality. In a time where we are getting a suite of advanced safety features as standard, the Chevy Trax isn’t bothered to offer at least half of them. Given that there is a wide range of crossover options available in the market, we can’t really recommend the 2022 Chevrolet Trax to be your next go-to option as you may get a crossover that's two folds better than the Trax in every aspect you're looking for.
