Among the sea of subcompact SUVs on the market, the Trax is Chevrolet's quirky and stylish entry into the segment. It's available with all the usual SUV traits like a tall driving position and a practical interior that can seat five passengers. With a turbocharged 1.4L engine as standard and optional all-wheel drive, the Trax covers all the basics. However, it has started to age among competitors, lacking a comprehensive feature list even when compared to the Chevrolet Trailblazer.

The popular subcompact SUV segment includes rivals like the Mazda CX-30, Hyundai Kona, and Volkswagen Taos. Compared to rivals, the 2022 Chevrolet Trax is relatively affordable with a starting price of just over $22,500 and going up to $24,400.

2022 Chevrolet Trax Interior Design, Dimensions, and Comfort

As with all subcompact SUVs, the Trax gets a tall and lean cabin with plenty of cargo room and seating for five passengers. While Chevrolet has tried to liven up the interiors with silver trims and chrome, it still looks and feels outdated. The quality of materials used is average at best and most areas get hard plastics. However, all the controls are placed ergonomically and are easy to get used to.

The tall stance and wide opening doors also make ingress and egress easy even for larger passengers. The infotainment system is also neatly placed in the middle with a layered dashboard design.

While the quality of materials used is average, the layered design with a splash of silver around the infotainment, center console, and climate vents look unique. The door cards also blend in with the design, resulting in a seamless curve from end to end. Both the infotainment and climate control system gets physical controls for easier access, placed conveniently in the middle. The color scheme used can make the dashboard look bland and dull with gray plastics covering most of the interiors.

The huge glass area at the front and tall seating combine to provide excellent visibility on all sides, making it easier to navigate tight city streets. For daily commutes, the seats offer plenty of support and cushioning. The LT trim also adds some leatherette upholstery over the standard cloth seats.

Although the situation at the rear is similar, the Trax falls short in legroom, making it a tight fit for taller passengers. The high window line and dark interiors also make it look a lot less spacious than it is. Only the outboard passengers get integrated headrests, while the middle passenger only gets a three-point seatbelt.

Both rows get a center armrest with integrated cupholders for added comfort. The manual air conditioning also works well thanks to the compact cabin.

While its boxy proportions make it look spacious from the outside, the Chevrolet Trax is rather cramped on the inside compared to competitors, especially for rear-seat passengers. The new Volkswagen Taos leads the pack with adequate space in both rows, followed by the Mazda CX-30 and Hyundai Kona.

2022 Chevrolet Trax Infotainment

Like most GM offerings, the infotainment system is simple and easy to use despite the smaller 7-inch display. It's also packed with all the latest features including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, connected car features, voice control, Wi-Fi hotspot, SiriusXM satellite radio, and more.

However, the basic 6-speaker audio system is average at best at delivering notes, with no options to upgrade it further.

  • 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system
  • OnStar and Chevrolet connected services
  • Bluetooth connectivity with two active devices
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration
  • Wi-Fi hotspot
  • SiriusXM satellite radio
  • 6-speaker audio system

2022 Chevrolet Trax Cargo Capacity

Trunk capacity is one of the reasons why customers opt for a subcompact SUV over a hatchback, and the Trax doesn’t disappoint with 18.7 cubic feet of storage behind the second row. Although it's nowhere close to class-leading, it should be adequate for the average family.

2022 Chevrolet Trax Cargo Space

Folding the rear seats will liberate up to 48.4 cubic feet of space, enough to ferry around a bicycle. The front passenger seat can also be folded to a certain extent to carry longer items. Like all subcompact SUVs, the trunk opens wide and the loading lip is just the right height to slide in heavy items.

Like its interior space, the Chevrolet Trax is also the least practical option here, coming in behind the Hyundai Kona. Both the Mazda CX-30 and Volkswagen Taos excel in this regard, offering a more practical and flexible cargo area.

Additional Interior Storage Spaces

The Chevrolet Trax gets all the usual storage areas like two cupholders at both rows, deep center console storage, and a sizable glovebox. The LT trim also gets an under-seat storage bin for the front passenger. Unfortunately, the limited space inside doesn’t leave enough room for larger door pockets at the rear, although you do get a driver seat-back pocket. To keep items secure an under-floor storage area is also provided inside the trunk.

2022 Chevrolet Trax Creature Comforts

Chevrolet offers a choice of just two trim levels with the Trax. Starting with the base LS model, the only notable standard feature is the 60/40 split-folding rear seats. Opting for the Tint and Cruise package also adds tinted rear windows.

Although upgrading to the LT model doesn’t add much in the way of features, it does unlock optional packages like the convenience package which includes keyless entry and ignition, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

The Premium Seat package swaps out the cloth seats with faux leather upholstery and adds heated front seats.

Verdict

While the Trax may not be on everyone’s mind when shopping for a subcompact SUV, it does make a solid case for itself with its quirky styling and affordable pricing. Its smaller dimensions and tall seating also make the 2022 Chevrolet Trax an excellent city runabout. However, there's a lot of room for improvement, and the basic interiors fall short of most rivals. Overall, unless you can find one with for hefty discount, there are plenty of better options on the market.
