One of the iconic and most bad-ass of muscle cars, the Dodge Challenger is probably one of the only few rare cars that can still get away with a design almost half a decade old. Aggressive, boxy, and looking like an angry beast ready to charge at you, the Challenger is still one of the best American muscle cars out there. It flexes its muscle with powerful engines and tons of options to choose from. The R/T Scat Pack sits towards the higher end of the hierarchy before it makes the jump to the outrageous SRT models

2022 Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack Coupe Features

If there was ever a doubt that Dodge uses the coolest names in the industry, the 2022 Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack just proves that as an example of that. It comes as a standalone trim and starts at $41,070. It packs a HEMI V8 engine and comes with a manual transmission as standard with the option to upgrade to an automatic transmission for $1,595. The car only comes as RWD as standard with no option for AWD, which would make the enthusiasts happy.

The Challenger also offers a ton of options to choose and customize from. Some of them can get quite expensive, but the options also add a lot of cool new features. You can include the 1320 package for $3,995 which includes drag mode suspension, Dodge Alcantara performance steering wheel, adaptive damping suspension, drag mode performance pages, etc. The Driver Convenience Group for $1,295 adds blind spot and cross path detection, power multi-function foldaway mirrors, and high-intensity discharge headlamps. The Harman/Kardon audio group for $1,795 adds a trunk-mounted subwoofer, an 18-speaker premium audio system, etc. You can find other expensive packages, most of which improve the exterior looks and aerodynamics.

Which Trim should you buy?

Well, the R/T Scat Pack is pretty well-positioned in the Dodge Challenger lineup. It adds a powerful engine, manual transmission, and RWD and is the perfect choice for any enthusiast. If you have the extra cash, we would recommend adding the 1320 package. However, you can skip it. But you must add the Driver Convenience Group for safety features. If you want to add more thumping bass to your car, consider adding the Harman/Kardon Audio Group too. However, be careful as all the options together can make the whole car too expensive.

Release date

Even though the brand has not disclosed the official launch date of the vehicle, as per every year’s schedule, the car will hit the showrooms by fall 2021.

2022 Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack Coupe Engine and Performance

8.0/10

The 2022 Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack comes with the huge 6.4L HEMI V8 that is capable of churning out 485 horsepower and 475 lb-ft of torque. The standard transmission is a 6-speed manual unit and the 8-speed automatic can be added for an extra $1,595. You only get the coupe as RWD and AWD config is not available. However, the issue is that the engine cannot offer linear power over its entire rev range. Rather, it waits to get until an RPM range before offering respectable power.

The engine does not rev quite high either. This problem will be most persistent if you go with the manual transmission. With the automatic, the transmission is decent enough to make quick shifts on its own. The American muscle car is capable of shooting off the line and reaching the 60 MPH mark in a mere 4.2 seconds, which is commendable for a beefy muscle car. It also reaches the quarter-mile in a very impressive 11.7 seconds. The numbers are enough to get your adrenaline pumping. The top speed is limited to 150 MPH.

The Challenger R/T Scat Pack is the one with the maximum power on paper, while the Ford Mustang GT comes second with its smaller 5.0-liter V8 motor. The Camaro and the Challenger go neck-to-neck in terms of performance, while the Mustang is just a fraction slower. All muscle cars are pretty close in terms of overall performance stats. However, it is the Camaro SS that hits 0-60MPH in 4.1 seconds.

2022 Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack Coupe Fuel Economy

8.0/10

The iconic American HEMIs was never a very sensible choice if you wanted something that would be termed as “efficient”. And the same is the case here as well. The HEMI-V8 on the 2022 Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack gets an EPA estimate of 14 MPG for the city, 23 MPG for the highway, and 17 MPG for combined driving. Yes, the Challenger does not exactly prove to be very efficient, but neither does any muscle car with big engines under its hood.

The R/T Scat Pack comes with a gas tank of 18.5 gallons. This allows it to have a driving range of 259/425/314 miles for city/highway/combined driving cycles respectively. This does not exactly inspire confidence for very long trips unless you spend a sizable amount of money on gas and be frequent to gas stations.

The Challenger R/T Scat Pack, as expected, comes off as the least fuel-efficient one here but marginally, owing to its large V8 engine and heavy curb weight. The Camaro is the lightest of the lot and that did save some MPGs for it. It also comes with a large gas tank which pushes its driving range well over 450 miles. The Challenger is decent in terms of driving range, but not very promising. The Mustang GT takes the bottom palace majorly owing to its small gas tank that can hold 16-gallons, hence some lackluster driving range numbers.

2022 Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack Coupe Interior

5.0/10

The 2022 Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack interior is not very bright but gets the job done. The design feels old and outdated. However, it still has its own retro theme and will appeal to old-school folks. Houndstooth cloth upholstery is standard. The gear shifter comes adorned in leather and you can find chrome or metal-look on the interior accents. In order to upgrade to Nappa leather, you need to pay extra. The driver’s seat is 10-way power-adjustable and also offers 4-way lumbar support. The passenger’s seat is 4-way adjustable.

The sport steering wheel comes with a heating function and is leather-wrapped. The seats are adorned in houndstooth cloth and also feature the Scat Pack logo. The front seats need to move out of the way to get access to the rear seats. The rear seats have thwarted headroom and legroom, but smaller adults can still find themselves seated at the back. The cargo space is around 16.2 cubic feet, which is quite pleasing for a coupe. You can easily expect to do your grocery run, go on a golfing trip, or a weekend trip with your small family. Also, the rear seats can be folded in order to increase the cargo capacity. On the flip side, In-cabin storage solutions are pretty limited and not very cavernous.

The Mustang GT comes with a retro-modern interior design as well but gets better quality materials than the Challenger but its headroom and legroom are on the shorter side, making it a bit snug fit for tall passengers and drivers. The Chevrolet Camaro SS has an overall better interior design with a modern approach to it. However, its rear seats are only really useful for keeping cargo items since the headroom and legroom are on the lower side as compared to the other two vehicles. Both the contemporary cars have a standard seating capacity of 4 passengers and also have lower cargo space on offer of around 10 cu.-ft.

Standout interior features:

  • 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with 4-way lumbar support
  • Houndstooth cloth upholstery
  • Sport steering wheel with heating function
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Scat Pack logo on the seats
  • Leather gear shifter material
  • Heated front seats

What’s there to keep you entertained?

Despite not being upgraded for more than a decade Dodge still has kept the infotainment system up-to-date. Thanks to their efforts, the 2022 Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack comes with an 8.4” touchscreen that runs on Uconnect 4C. The system is not the most intuitive or the most responsive, but it will get your job done. You also get a dedicated climate control display.

The features you are presented with are also impressive, such as voice recorder, mobile hotspot, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, USB ports, Bluetooth, SiriusXM, etc. The sound duties are handled by a 6-speaker Alpine sound system. However, if you wish, you can upgrade to the 18-speaker Harman Kardon sound system.

Standout infotainment features:

  • 8.4” Uconnect 4C
  • Bluetooth
  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
  • Mobile hotspot
  • SiriusXM radio
  • 6-speaker Alpine sound system

2022 Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack Coupe Exterior

4.0/10

The 2022 Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack’s exterior is one exciting bit since it is a blend of old and new at the same time. Yes, Dodge has not fully reconstructed or redesigned this car since 2008, but they have made subtle changes over the years to keep it relatively at par with the segment. It is only one of those rare cars, which looks pretty impressive, even though its design is more than a decade old. And yes, it appears as a rough and tough, pure American muscle car. The front fascia has a boxy rectangular shape, with the classic round headlights and grille integrated beside them; Very retro and very eye-candy. The iconic hood is massive and large and wide, with hood scoops installed.

From the side, the smooth flowing design and the low stance and long body make it look pretty handsome. The rear end is also old, and the taillights are enclosed within the same boxy rectangular housing as the front fascia. The taillights are two huge strips encircling the brake lights and covering almost the entire rear. Dual exhaust systems do justice to the design. Halogen headlamps are standard, while the brake lights are LED. The wide, long and purely American muscle car is probably the only one that still looks like the muscle cars of yesteryear. Everyone else has moved forward to sleeker and more innovative design, but the Challenger’s design still works and it still impresses. The R/T Scat Pack rides on 20” low gloss wheels.

No one comes close to the wheelbase of the 2022 Challenger R/T Scat Pack. That is why it is able to accommodate adults in the rear and also has a large cargo area. The hood itself is pretty long on the Dodge, while the others, as previously mentioned, have shifted to a more modern approach. They don’t offer boxiness anymore. The Ford Mustang GT wears an angry look on its front fascia and feels slightly more compact than the Challenger. The Chevrolet Camaro SS looks like the most modern muscle car among the rivals here owing to its sleek yet sly-looking and aggressive front fascia.

Standout exterior features:

  • Brembo performance brake system
  • High-performance suspension
  • Xenon headlights
  • Scat Pack-specific exterior styling details
  • Dual stainless-steel exhaust
  • 20” low gloss wheels
  • Front fog lamps
  • Rear spoiler

2022 Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack Coupe Safety

5.0/10

NHTSA crash-tested the base 2021 Challenger and gave it a 5-star overall safety rating; with a 4-star only in overall front star rating and rollover rating. However, IIHS had mixed feelings about it. It achieved “Good” only in two categories, while the rest were a mix of “Acceptable” and “Marginal”. We can expect a similar rating for the R/T Scat pack. Unfortunately, the Challenger does not include a lot of safety techs as standard. There are extra optional packages that add some driver-assistance features, but as far as you are concerned, safety features are not a strong point of this car.

Standout safety features:

  • An aerial view camera system
  • ParkSense rear parking sensors
  • Emergency SOS
  • Parkview back-up camera
  • Blind-spot monitoring (optional)
  • Rear cross-traffic alert (optional)
  • Forward collision avoidance (optional)

2022 Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack vs 2021 Ford Mustang GT

In the showdown of American muscle cars, the Mustang GT wins easily when it comes to popularity and fame. However, the Challenger R/T Scat pack is for those who want to feel like a muscle car and also want a practical one. The Challenger is way more practical than the Mustang GT, but the Ford handles better, performs nearly identical, and also offers more standard safety features. The Ford Mustang GT also has modern touches and finishes. So, we will let you decide.

2022 Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack vs 2022 Chevrolet Camaro 1SS

Alongside, the Camaro SS is another iconic muscle car, perhaps more well known around the car as compared to the Challenger. However, once again, the Challenger R/T Scat Pack is the obvious choice for practicality, as the Camaro fares even worse than the Mustang here. They perform nearly identical, but the Camaro handles way better overall. Once again, the Camaro SS has the modern touch, but if you like retro, go with the Dodge.

2022 Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack Coupe Final Verdict

The 2022 Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack is probably the only muscle car that has remained true to its roots to this day, and some aspects have worked for it, some against it. If you like the design, as we do, that is a big reason to own one. The Challenger also has all the modern amenities, so you are not being left out. Also, it can blast away in a straight line. Handling is not top-notch and neither is the safety, but some corners had to be cut and sacrifices had to be made. It is also a very practical coupe; so, if you want a muscle car with good practicality, this is the way to go.
