Enzo Ferrari once said, “Aerodynamics is for those who can’t make powerful engines.” Seems like Dodge took that statement too seriously and decided never to let the Challenger forget its roots. The Challengers are the only ones keeping the culture of true blue muscle cars alive over the years. Still, with all the electrification of vehicles going on and concern around the environment, the huge V8s powering the Challenger may soon be a thing of the past. So why not get your hands on one while it still lasts.

The new Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat is a refresh of the 2021 model year of the muscle car’s dedicated performance version. There is also the Challenger SRT redeye and the track-only SRT Demon which are even more powerful versions, with the Demon being powered with a Hennessey engine! The 2022 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat retails at $59,995 and locks horns with the Ford Shelby GT 500, Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, and the Chevrolet Corvette 1LT.

2022 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Coupe Features

8.0/10

While the Dodge Challenger family does comprise several trims, most of them have a very unique character and are treated as separate specific models. The SRT Hellcat in that regard is no different. The SRT Hellcat sits between the R/T Scat Pack and the Challenger Hellcat Redeye and unlocks the super-performance DNA of the Challenger.

Available only in the RWD guise, the 2021 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat is priced at $59,995. Then there are a ton of packages that are specific to the enhancement of one component at a time. For example, there are different packages that focus on either the sound system, or it could be the engine, or a widebody package, and a lot more.

Which Trim should you buy?

Since the Challenger SRT Hellcat is considered as a standalone trim, there's not much to ponder around. However, as standard, the SRT Hellcat is not only a performance beast but also comes aptly loaded with tech and creature comforts.

2022 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Release Date

Since it's too early to make a call, manufacturers haven't given a tentative release date but looking at the usual pattern of Dodge, the release is expected to happen sometime in the fall of this year. However, the pandemic seems to be on the rise again, which is why they may push the date back a bit.

2022 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Coupe Engine and Performance

8.0/10

The SRT engine of the 2022 Dodge Challenger Hellcat is an exclusive masterpiece. Blasting out a massive 717 horsepower and 656 lb-ft of torque, all of which goes to the rear wheels, the Challenger SRT hellcat sprints from 0mph to 60mph within 3.8 seconds flat. Dodge has really kept the spirit of the American muscle car tradition alive by forever opting for the rear-wheel-drive setup and our heart really melts seeing Dodge not get rid of the manual gearbox at all costs. So to summarise, we have a 6.2L Supercharged V8 mated to a six-speed manual gearbox and all the power being delivered to the rear wheels. Now that sounds like the perfect recipe for a very fun-to-drive car!

2022 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Coupe Engine Bay

The whining tune of the supercharger in the Challenger SRT Hellcat revives the child in you and you sink into the seat buried with excitement while also being constantly worried about being able to tame this beast. Yes, the Challenger SRT Hellcat is basically an overpowered vehicle and since its design language is inspired by half a century old cars, the chassis is not really suited to withstand all that power. Therefore it constantly powerslides and wags its tail and it’s on you to be constantly hooked onto the wheel and get it back on track whenever it misbehaves.

The Dodge might pack in a punchy engine but still is the slowest accelerating machine amongst the competition and it compensates for it by being the one with the highest top speed. The Corvette once again manages to do what it does best, which is to make people wonder how it achieves these unreal performance figures year after year and generation after generation. The formula for the Corvettes blistering fast acceleration is a fresh mid-engine setup and a super-light build. The Camaro and Ford GT 500 are not way ahead of the Challenger but the GT500 has a very impressive quarter-mile time.

The Challenger SRT Hellcat gets huge six-piston Brembo brakes that provide good stopping power as well as enough confidence to unleash the car to its full potential on the drag strip. The Tyres are also very wide and supply amazing traction. The Challenger is already a heavy car and the traction from the tires makes it a very stable fast car on a straight line. Still, the engine packs in too much power so much so that wheelspins are a common sight.

2022 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Coupe Fuel Economy

8.0/10

For a car with 717 hp and 4428 lbs of curb weight, fuel economy is not an ideal credential that you look out for. However, for those interested in some arithmetic, the 2021 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat delivers a 16 MPG combined fuel economy which is acceptable enough for its size and bulk. With a fuel tank of 18.5 gallons, the fuel economy figures add up to a combined range of approximately 300 miles which is not that bad.

Once again with its not-so-powerful engine, the Corvette outshines its competition in the mileage department too. The Dodge Challenger and Camaro still offer a decent range but the Ford GT 500 is a complete scrap if fuel economy is an important criterion for you while buying some American muscle. The Corvette has a fuel tank way bigger than all the other ones and the range is super-practical for someone to believe that the Corvette is actually a sports car.

2022 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Coupe Interior

9.0/10

The Interiors of the 2022 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat is completely washed in jet black and all the light-emitting bits from the information cluster and the infotainment system give out a shiny blood-red glow, which provokes the bull in you to put on some rage. Just open the door and it feels like the cabin is inviting you as the entire dashboard is positioned in a tilted driver-facing setup. Sitting in the Challenger SRT Hellcat brings out a character in you, the kind of character of some Hollywood action hero getting into a scenic car chase maybe?

2022 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Coupe Interior Front Row

The seats on the SRT are done in a mix of good quality cloth upholstery and Mulan leather and have 8-way power adjustment for both the driver and the co-passenger. There are Carbon-fiber inserts all around the dash and the cabin overall feels rather SUV-ish. The seats are thick and provide good support during all the high-speed driving. The special touch is the leather-wrapped flat-bottom steering wheel. One really sore eye is the controls for the climate control and all other switches in the cabin in general. While the climate control console lacks any digital gizmo, it also has some knobs and buttons which look prehistoric. The area atop the dashboard surrounding the information cluster and the infotainment system gets nice leather treatment, but the rest of the cabin has a lot of hard plastics.

The Dodge Challenger is the roomiest as the chassis is extremely boxy and long as well. The Corvette has no rear row of seats, but the ones in the Camaro and the Ford GT 500 too are peanut-sized and can only really seat your gym bag. Only in the Challenger is it that you can convince 3 children to get in the back for short periods of time and they would oblige without being disappointed about it. The Challenger SRT Hellcat also has the best in class cargo capacity. Some of the key features of the interior include:

  • 12" diagonal color Gauge cluster, with driver information display
  • Remote vehicle starter system
  • push-button start
  • Air filtration system with pollen filter
  • Rear defogger
  • Visors on driver and passenger side with illuminated mirrors

How Intuitive is the infotainment system on the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat

The infotainment unit in the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat is a mere 8.4” unit and if you see it alongside the huge 12” information cluster, it looks very very tiny and unbalanced. The screen is tilted towards the driver and everything is within the finger’s reach. Still, the small size of the screen will require you to bend over to see what you’re doing. The System is a complete touchscreen unit and the absence of knobs will leave you struggling to lower the volume when you are in the middle of a high-speed sprint and would like to focus by slowing down the music.

2022 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Coupe Infotainment System

The system also comes along with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a premium six-speaker audio. You also get satellite radio, USB, and Bluetooth connectivity. The screen is quick to respond and has good brightness. There’s a ton of driver information display and car stats that can be checked on this screen and it is all displayed through a very nice interface with some perfectly curated graphics. Some of the key features of the infotainment system include:

  • 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Premium six-speaker Alpine audio system
  • Satellite radio
  • 5 USB ports
  • Available navigation system

2022 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Coupe Exterior

7.0/10

The Dodge Challenger is hands down the only car that still beautifully resembles its original design which is now around 50 years old. The boxy exterior trashcans the whole concept of aerodynamics. and hence has a long engine bay to accommodate the huge supercharged V8 which is needed to propel this car as fast as other exotics. The body is of supreme build quality so that it can handle all the torque.

2022 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Coupe Front Angle View

The signature Quad Headlamps are recognizable from miles away and one can tell it’s an SRT Hellcat from the unique badging on the front grille. The bumper area all around the car is well defined along with thick fenders around the wheel and a nicely protruding front splitter. There are Quad exhausts that let out a beautiful note. The hood gets functional hood scoops and even the two inner headlamps are hollow to let in air to cool the engine.

The rear tail lamps are too minimalistic and complement the headlamps as well as the entire rear space so well. The spoiler too complements the splitter and is a cosmetic aesthetic. The whole design language speaks of aggression. The Buffed up fenders provide a good indication of how wide the tires are and the lines running through the sides kind of resembles the way most muscle car drivers sit when driving with the seat adjusted way back, their spines nicely reclined and the left hand nicely stretched out onto the steering wheel.

The Challenger SRT Hellcat is no doubt the heaviest, whereas the Camaro and Mustang are way lighter and also employ some aerodynamics for enhanced performance. This makes them a bliss to drive around corners over the Challenger but still, all three of them are infamous for handling poorly. The agile Corvette is the lightest and being a two-seater is roomy as well for that dimensions. The Corvette is the most sporty of the lot and yet exceeds the ground clearance of the other three by a whole inch! The Challenger SRT Hellcat runs on 20-inch wheels with low-profile trims. The Rims are only a bit bigger than the already huge brake discs. Some of the key exterior features include:

  • Body-Colored Power Heated Side Mirrors w/Manual Folding
  • Auto On/Off Projector Beam Halogen Daytime Running Headlamps w/Delay-Off
  • LED Brakelights
  • 20’ inch all-season tires
  • Led DRLs
  • Black dual exhaust tips
  • Dual hood scoops
  • Black rear spoiler

2022 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Coupe Safety

7.0/10

The Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat has only the needed safety features on offer and for its competitive price point can not really afford the high-end features. As such, it’s quite a gamble as the car is super quick but still a nightmare to handle. There is ABS and ESP of course, but the traction control looks like something taken out from a hatchback as it really has no idea how to handle all that power. Due to this, the Hellcat actively powerslides and is a very hard beast to tame. As a relief, you get airbags on the front, curtain as well as mounted on the seat for both the passengers. Some of the key safety features include:

  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC) And Roll Stability Control (RSC)
  • ABS And Driveline Traction Control
  • Side Impact Beams
  • Aerial View Camera System
  • ParkSense Rear Parking Sensors
  • Emergency Sos
  • Tire Specific Low Tire Pressure Warning
  • Outboard Front Lap And Shoulder Safety Belts -inc Rear Center 3 Point and Pretensioners
  • ParkView Back-Up Camera

2022 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Coupe Competition

9.0/10

2022 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat vs. the 2022 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

Both of these are established rivals but neither of them has ever been able to surpass the other. The Challenger has more torque and power on offer but the Chevrolet Camaro is lighter and eventually performs better.

2022 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

Also, the design language of the Camaro has evolved to look modern and brutal at the same time. To put into words, the Camaro is the alcoholic that embraced sobriety while the Challenger still chose to remain drunk. It all boils down to what you have more fun driving for you to conclude your decision, not to forget the Camaro has a $5,000 premium over the Challenger SRT Hellcat

2022 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat vs. the 2022 Ford Shelby GT 500

The Ford Mustang Shelby GT 500 is an icon and is priced like one. At $72,000 the Ford is really no competition to the Challenger but is only there as there are only these three muscle cars that exist now.

2022 Ford Shelby GT 500

For that hefty price tag, you get the same performance figures albeit good looks and a very sporty and premium interior. Over the years, we have witnessed that Ford Shelby GT 500 buyers are the ones who have totally made up their minds to not buy any other car.

2022 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Coupe Final Verdict

The new Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat is indeed a powerhouse and is easy on the wallet. The car has a legend to back it and the character it exudes, gives a rush of testosterone to the person driving it. You surely will grab a lot of eyeballs with this one but there will also be people who can’t appreciate it as they know nothing about it. If that much power is not your cup of tea, you can always opt for the lower trims which too pack a whole lot of power and ride high on looks and standard features.
