How does one define crazy? Well, the dictionary defines crazy as ‘mad, especially as manifested in wild or aggressive behavior.’ Now, when you think of a car that would match perfectly to the definition of crazy, there’s just one that comes to mind- the Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye. This is essentially a full-size four-door sedan but with a huge twist. Under its hood, there is a V8 unit that pumps out nearly 800 horses, and it boasts of being the world’s most powerful production sedan. And that might make you wonder if it comes with an atrociously hefty price tag, well no, this thing is priced at just $83,320.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

What’s interesting though is that it doesn’t have many rivals. The only car that comes close to the Charger Redeye in terms of power and price is the Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing. Apart from that, there hardly are any sedans that produce over or close to 700 horses. The only other sedans that come close to the Redeye are the BMW M5 and the Mercedes-AMG E 63 S. Continue with the article to know about how the sedan performs in front of other German and American rivals in the segment.

Release Date

No update is out till now, but looking at the trend of last year, the sedan will be out by the end of this year.

2022 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye Sedan Engine and Performance

The 2022 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye Widebody is equipped with a massive 6.2 liter Supercharged V8 HEMI unit. This engine pumps out about 797 horsepower and 707 lb-ft of torque, and that’s crazy. The Hellcat Redeye does not get a manual gearbox like the 717 hp Hellcat Widebody, which might be a bummer for a few, but Dodge thinks it’s a bit risky to allow human hands to control and transmit that kind of power. Hence, the Hellcat Redeye’s engine is mated to a ZF 8-speed automatic gearbox, and power is sent back to the rear wheels only.

This four-door sedan makes more torque than the McLaren Senna and costs less than 1/10th of the Senna’s price tag! The downside though is that it isn’t as quick as the Senna or even as quick as its direct rivals. The Charger Hellcat Redeye takes about 3.5 seconds to hit the 60 mph mark, while on the other hand, it cuts the quarter-mile distance in 11.9 seconds. Now, that’s a little too slow for a car that boasts nearly 800 horses, but they only really matter if you only really care about those few tenths of a second. This thing still can go crazy fast, and it maxes out at about 203 mph.

The Hellcat Redeye is an utterly scary car to drive. It has a very violent exhaust grunt accompanied by the whine of the supercharger, and both of those form a very exciting orchestra. Many mechanical components on the Charger Hellcat Redeye like the 2.7-liter supercharger and the gearbox are straight up from the limited-edition Dodge Challenger SRT Demon. There is so much power on offer, and even if takes some time to build, you can feel the hard push when you hit the gas pedal. The gearbox is quick-shifting but not the quickest and handles all the power and torque well.

The Charger Hellcat Redeye is the world’s most powerful sedan, and none of its rivals even come close to it in terms of power and torque numbers. However, its power and torque numbers do not quite translate into acceleration times, credit to its rather sedate gearbox and rear-wheel drive configuration. The Mercedes-AMG E 63 S has the quickest acceleration numbers, doing a 0-60 mph in just 2.8 seconds and cutting the quarter-mile distance in about 10.8 seconds.

2022 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye Sedan Fuel Economy

Well, as expected from a V8 producing close to 800 hp, the 2022 Dodge Charger Hellcat Redeye delivers awful fuel economy numbers. If you plan to drive this one in the city, you’ll be able to travel only 12 miles on a single gallon of gas. On the highway, you may haul up to about 21 miles. The car gets a rating of 15 MPG combined EPA, which is pretty apt for an 800 hp car. The sedan comes with a fuel tank capacity of 18.5 gallons, resulting in a combined range of 277.5 miles.

The Cadillac and the Dodge have similar kinds of fuel economy numbers, and those are the lowest in the competition. The Mercedes churns out the best fuel efficiency figures and delivers 18 MPG combined. On the other hand, the BMW delivers about 17 MPG combined, which is still better than the Cadillac and the Dodge. When comparing the overall range of these sedans, the 2021 Mercedes AMG E63 S offers the most at 400.9 miles combined.

2022 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye Sedan Interior

There’s nothing fancy about the 2022 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye’s interior. The design is just functional and practical and largely revolves around the driver. At the front, you have a nice stubby steering wheel with Alcantara and white stitching and pedal shifters mounted on it. Then there’s the instrument cluster behind the wheel that has dials in red to add to the sporty character of the car. Then you’d notice the carbon fiber trims around the air-con vents and on the doors which again add up to the car’s sporty flair. The infotainment system and the air-con controls below it are all slightly angled towards the driver so that the driver can have easy access to them.

The amount of space that the Charger Redeye has got on offer is pretty decent. Three adult passengers on the back seat will not be all that comfortable, but there’s enough room on the back to accommodate 2 adults and a child. At the front, there’s a good amount of head, shoulder, and legroom as well, and even tall passengers won’t have any troubles fitting in there. The bucket seats at the front are quite comfy and have very aggressive side bolsters to hold you tight in place. The seats at the back are scooped out as well to keep the passengers in place.

There are not many storage spaces on the inside though. At the front, there’s an average-sized glove box along with cup holders in the center console. Then there are cupholders at the back in the center armrest along with bottle holders on all four doors. The car’s got a pretty large trunk though, it can swallow up to about 16.5 cubic feet of luggage, and the rear seats split-fold 60/40, and that’s how you can open up to more cargo space.

The Charger Redeye’s interior is the most basic and rather dull when compared to other cars in the competition. The Mercedes and the BMW are priced higher than the Dodge, but those cars get very upscale material and have a rich cabin design. The Cadillac also has a very modern and upmarket cabin design and feels much more premium than the Dodge. Passenger space on all the cars is similar, although the Dodge offers the highest about of cargo space in the competition. Key interior features include:

  • 12-way power-adjustable heated and ventilated front bucket seats
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Leather-wrapped gear shift lever
  • Laguna leather upholstery

What’s there to keep you entertained?

The Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye gets Dodge’s UConnect 4C infotainment system. The system is accessible via an 8.4-inch touchscreen display that sits in the center of the dash. The system isn’t all that intuitive, and navigating through menus and settings at times can get a little too cumbersome. Right from audio settings to the drive mode settings, everything has to be accessed via the infotainment screen, and that’s why scrolling through the options is a little tedious.

On the flip side though, the sedan gets a 276 watt, 6-speaker Alpine sound system which delivers high-quality sound and enhances your overall in-ride experience. Surprisingly, basic features like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and HD radio get a miss. However, many other basic tech features are part of the sedan. Standout infotainment features available with the sedan include:

  • 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment display
  • 276-watt, 6-speaker Alpine audio system
  • Bluetooth smartphone integration
  • AM/FM radio
  • SiriusXM with added TravelLink

2022 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye Sedan Exterior

Is this the most rad-looking sedan on the market? Well, yes, at least in our opinion, it is. Again, no outrageous lines and curves are going across the car’s body, yet it manages to look cool and instantly turn heads around. The car has a large and long hood with a couple of vents and a large scoop to suck in air. There are a lot of vents down at the front as well, and all of them are real to help the car breathe in as much as it needs. There’s that sculpted bumper at the front that looks very aggressive, and the headlights blend with the car’s aggressive face well.

From the side, you’ll find the sloping roofline merging with the trunk, along with a boomerang-shaped element sculpted on the door panels. It sits on large 20-inch forged aluminum-alloy wheels, and that just helps the car have a very sporty stance. Not to forget, this is a ‘Widebody,’ and hence it has those flared fenders that protrude outside the car’s body and look awesome. At the back, you get a nice, sculpted bumper along with real dual exhaust tips. There’s a large LED light bar that runs across the car’s rear and looks cool. Plus, there’s a split LED taillight cluster that again adds up to the racy flair of the car. Long story short, the car’s looks are indeed enough to attract buyers.

The Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye is the largest car in the competition, while the BMW M5 is the smallest. Now, what car looks the best is ultimately a matter of taste, but no other car in the competition looks quite as badass as the Dodge does. When comparing the wheelbase, Dodge offers the longest at 120 inches, which further helps in creating better space for the passengers inside. On the flip side, the sedan is the heaviest at 4586 lbs, which might have a role in keeping it slow when acceleration is in concern. Key exterior features include:

  • 20-inch, carbon-black, lightweight, forged aluminum wheels
  • Heated, auto-dimming, outside rearview mirrors
  • Speed sensitive wipers with heated jets
  • Lip spoiler
  • LED brake lights
  • Auto on/off projector-beam LED headlights

2022 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye Sedan Safety

The 2022 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye is yet to be tested and rated by the NHTSA and the IIHS, but the 2021 model has been tested and rated, and safe to say, it does pretty well in those tests. The 2021 Charger Redeye gets a full 5-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA and a ‘Good’ to ‘Average’ rating in almost all the IIHS tests. The Redeye doesn’t get all that many safety features though, yet we’ve listed a few down below.

  • Blindspot assist
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Backup camera
  • Forward-collision warning
  • ABS with EBD
  • Side impact beams
  • Driveline traction control

2022 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye Sedan Competition

2022 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye vs. 2022 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing

The Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing is the Redeye’s closest rival in terms of price, power, and performance. The Blackwing also uses a 6.2-liter Supercharged V8 but is only capable of delivering 668 hp and 659 lb-ft of torque. However, the Blackwing is quicker than the Redeye by a couple of tenths of a second. Another area where the Blackwing outclasses the Redeye is in terms of interior design. The Cadillac is much more upscale than the Redeye on the inside and comes with many more features and equipment. If you can let go of the few extra horses, then you probably should go for the CT5-V Blackwing.

2022 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye vs. 2022 BMW M5

The BMW M5 is the OG of sports sedans, and it has improved quite a bit with its latest iteration. The M5 doesn’t have the power and torque figure as the Redeye, but it is quicker than the Redeye in a straight line. Moreover, the interior of the M5 is way better than the Dodge’s. Now, the M5 is costlier than the Dodge by $20,000, but then for that money, the Bimmer gets a lot many features and equipment. If you can spend those extra dollars, then the M5 is indeed a better proposition.

2022 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye vs. 2021 Mercedes-AMG E63 S

Just like the BMW M5, the Mercedes-AMG E 63 S is priced about $20,000 more than the Dodge. The Mercedes doesn’t have the crazy power numbers as the Dodge but it is also far quicker in the straight line. The Mercedes also boasts a plusher cabin and plenty of infotainment and safety features. The Dodge, on the other hand, doesn’t get any of those and is pretty much a bare-bones car when it comes to features and equipment. Again, if you have the money, putting it on a Mercedes would make more sense. However, if you crave something as crazy as this one, then you may perhaps go for it.

2022 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye Sedan Final Verdict

The mad power and performance figures and the insane driving experience of the 2022 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye might seem all fun and games until you realize it’s a bit of an overkill for the real-world condition. Yes, the Redeye is enticing, but then it just doesn’t make sense. For $85,000, you only get a car whose engine pumps out a huge amount of power, but that power doesn’t quite translate into performance, nor does it offer exquisite handling and neither does it come with a good number of features and equipment. So, if you’re fascinated by the numbers of the Dodge, and looking to buy one, wait for a moment, think twice, look at the other options that are there, and then proceed.
