Detailed Review

Adding the Abarth name behind a Fiat car means 2 things- The Car will be fun and fast to drive. Fiat has given the Abarth treatment to one of its most popular and talked about cars in its arsenal, the 124 Spider. The 2019 Fiat 124 Spider Abarth is a direct carryover from the 2018 version and sees no changes made to it. The Rear Wheel Drive, sports tourer if we may say, comes powered by a 1.4L 4 cylinder Multi Air Turbo Motor that pushes out a decent 160hp and 184lbs.ft of Torque.

What adds to the fun of driving the 2019 Fiat 124 Spider Abarth is the fact that it comes with low profile tires and a curb weight of just over 2400 pounds. Prices for the Abarth have been quoted as $27,090 for the manual variant and $28,440 for the automatic variant. The Primary rivals to the 2019 Fiat 124 Spider Abarth includes the Toyota 86, Subaru BRZ and the ultra popular Mazda MX-5 Miata.

There isn’t a choice of trim, but there is a choice for the equipment. The 124, however, is supposed to be a lightweight fun car. .

Engine and transmission

The engine of the Fiat 124 Spider Abarth is a small and light unit, only 1.4 liters in size. It is a turbocharged 4-cylinder unit that churns out 160 horsepower, quite tame for today’s day and age. Then there is the turbo-lag, which further makes the car feel slow and out of pace. But sky-high power is not the point of the tiny Fiat.

The power is sent to the rear wheels via a 6-speed manual gearbox. It is a precise and slick unit, and also extremely fun to drive. The gears are closely placed to compensate for the lack of power and improving acceleration.

*2018 Figures Used

The competition to the Fiat 124 Spider Abarth consists of Toyota 86, Subaru BRZ Premium, Mazda MX-5 Miata RF Club which produces 205 horsepower, 205 horsepower, 155 horsepower respectively. All the cars here are more focused on handling rather than power, which is the primary reason for the mediocre figures.

Acceleration

The acceleration of the 124 Spider is quite moderately fine, and the presence of the Abarth badge is rather disappointing. Performance, as stated earlier, is not the focus of the car. It takes an unurgent 6.5 seconds to reach from standstill to 60 mph, and the quarter-mile run takes just under 15 seconds.

The competition offers better performance than the Fiat, especially the Miata on which it is based, which takes 5.6 seconds only to reach from 0 to 60 mph. The Toyota and the BRZ are barely quicker than the Fiat, at 6.2 seconds for the same.

Braking and Handling

The braking duties on the Fiat 124 Spider Abarth are handled by 11-inch disc brakes both in the front and rear. It has an extremely light body that weighs only a bit over 2400 pounds. The weight advantage, coupled with the discs, helps the car come to a halt from 60 mph in 113 feet.

The handling of the 124 Abarth is the highlight of the car. The lightweight chassis is extremely fun to throw around on the bends and/or race tracks. Body roll is minimal and the car changes direction with the urgency of a rabid dog. The short wheelbase and tiny dimensions also aid the agility. The only problem is that you always have to downshift before entering a corner, in order to keep the engine in the powerband and the turbocharger spooling.

All the cars in this segment are designed on a budget, and it shows. The brakes are barely enough for modern cars, and the only reason the car has decent braking performance is due to their light weight, which also helps with the handling. The Miata is the original lightweight sports car, and hold its own on the race track. The 86 and the BRZ also have excellent handling but are let down by the skinny tires.

2019 Fiat 124 Spider Abarth Fuel Economy

Being light is particularly helpful in the fuel economy department, and the 124 Abarth has got great efficiency figures to boot. It manages to run for 26 miles on a single gallon of gasoline in the city, and out on the highway that gallon would help it run for 35 miles, thus bringing the overall efficiency figure to a great 30 mpg.

All the other cars here are naturally aspirated, which sees them lose against the Fiat. The Toyota and the Subaru lose even further due to larger engine sizes and heavier body. The 86, RZ and Miata post 24, 24 and 29 mpg overall respectively, respectable figures on their own.

Seating and Comfort

Fiat engineers knew they had to build the 124 Spider as small as possible, and thus they decided to do away with the rear seat altogether. The total seating capacity is 2 people, just a driver, and a single passenger. It isn’t a drawback, as the 124 Spider was marketed as a fun light car and not a people ferrying workhorse. The 2 people that sit in the Fiat are quite comfortable though, with a generous amount of space around.

The Miata also only seats a maximum of two people, which is fine for a car like that. The Toyota and the Subaru are a little more practical, offering what looks like rear seats, but certainly don’t feel like them. Only kids who have seen the lesser part of a decade in their life can fit in the back comfortably.

Infotainment

The Fiat 124 Spider Abarth runs the same Mazda Connect infotainment software as the Miata, which has a 7.0-inch touchscreen and a host of shortcut buttons for various operations such as audio level, navigation, home menus, etc. Apart from that, it has:

  • 9-speaker Bose audio system
  • SiriusXM satellite radio
  • Navigation System
  • Bluetooth
  • AUX

Cargo volume

This is one category that could have benefited from not being based on the Miata. But as it is based on the Miata, there is no reason to even think that the trunk can hold substantial luggage. Keep only the bare minimum, the absolute essentials, and you will be fine. Any more than that would have to keep on the passenger seat.

Design and Dimensions

Fiat 124 Spider Abarth is a tiny car by any and all standards, barely 160 inches in length and just under 70 inches in width. The curb weight (weight of the car with engine oil and all the other fluids) is a little over 2 thousand and 3 hundred pounds, which is very light. The little Fiat wins in this category.

The Miata, on which the Fiat is based, has nearly the same tiny dimensions as the latter. The 86 and the BRZ are relatively heavier and larger cars and thus lose here.

Fiat 124 Spider Abarth vs. Toyota 86

The Toyota 86 is a fun to drive car from Toyota that doesn’t feel like modern toyotas.. Since the organization has chosen to return to its underlying foundations, we can dare to dream that the future will bring far better vehicles than these. It is not necessarily the case that the 86 is certifiably not a decent vehicle. It is little, coordinated, light, chipper, and so on and any individual who's driven it thinks about its sleep inducing driving background.

In any case, in a normal Toyota design, the 86 is a bit excessively protected, as in it doesn't go the whole distance insane in a similar way the Fiat does. It is somewhat increasingly useful as well, which additionally implies it's bigger and heavier than the 124 Abarth.

Fiat 124 Spider Abarth vs. Subaru BRZ Premium

The Subaru BRZ is a Toyota 86 with an alternate identification. The vehicles are precisely the same and have no direct contrast between them. You could without much of a stretch close your eyes and pick one without much fuss in your mind. This likewise implies, much the same as the Toyota, the Subaru s heavier and bulkier than the Fiat. On the off chance that you need a very light old school driving machine, the BRZ isn't the one for you.

Fiat 124 Spider Abarth vs. Mazda MX-5 Miata RF Club

The Miata shares its underpinnings with the 124 Spider, and it causes them both to be very dexterous and effectively be same. The chassis can deal with considerably more power, a fact that becomes evident when you push the same around the corners. While we aren’t complaining of the low profile tires on offer, we would certainly appreciate a bit more grippier set of tires. It’s difficult to decide one among the 2 as both are the same. We would leave the decision to the buyer, as to decide which one to buy depending on which one you like better in looks.

2019 Fiat 124 Spider Abarth Final Verdict

The 2019 Fiat 124 Spider Abarth is a very refined, two seat convertible that manages to pack a punch, despite its relatively small dimensions. Its agile taking care of and excited motor just add to its amusing to drive nature. It's somewhat short on traveler and payload space, yet that isn't generally a major ordeal. The biggest selling point of the Fiat however is its price. At just $27,000, you are getting a proper RWD sports car that can be as easy to commute to your office as your normal city car and a fun tool to drive enthusiastically around the corners. So if you want a Car that can give you the thrills of a 2 door sports roadster but be as economical as a city hatch, the 124 spider is a good bet to place right now.
