Expert Review

CARHP Editorial August 20, 2019

With the performance division of Fiat taking the reigns and offering a performance bump to the 500, the 500 Abarth manages to give us the cheap thrills of a track focused car without spending the big bucks. The 5-speed manual transmission is what we’d recommend if you want to juice even the last bit of power from the turbocharged I-4 engine.

The retro renegade gets stiff competition from modern designs that don’t play on nostalgia and cute looks but rather play on features and specs. The competition offers more power, better features, and better fuel economy and whilst purchasing a car these features matter the most. The 2019 Fiat 500 falls flat on these parameters and the Abarth variant is the only one that comes close to rivaling its competitors like the Ford Focus, Mini Cooper and the Honda Civic hatchback (LX).

2019 Fiat 500 Abarth Hatchback Engine

Under the hood, the 500 gets an equally tiny turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine. It provides a certain amount of personality that helps the 500 feel eager and spritely around town, but the reality is that the 500 is still one of the slowest cars in the segment. Fuel economy is disappointing as well." - Edmunds

Engine and Transmission

The 1.4 Litre turbocharged engine has been retuned for the Abarth by the performance division of Fiat coincidentally named the same. Equipped with 160 horses the Abarth division managed to churn out 184lb-ft of torque from the inline 4 engine.

Acceleration

The little engine does manage to outclass the others while being in line with the company's motto to make fun to drive car. With 7.1s on the clock and the fastest on the quarter-mile track, the gusto of the Fiat 500 Abarth is not so easy to subdue.

Ride and Handling

The quality of ride with 2019 Fiat 500 is impressive on smooth roads. However, it falls off sharply with the more unevenness your experience on the road. While the handling of the ride is impressive, steering isn't up to par even flaunting a well-weighted build.

In fact, quick engagement with the ride can give an impression of a sports car until roughness is encountered. 2019 Fiat 500 flaunts a front-wheel-drive system. An all-wheel-drive can further smoothen the ride quality of 500, provided if it was available. Yes, that's unfortunately correct that Fiat 500 has no options for an AWD. For that, you need to look elsewhere.

2019 Fiat 500 Abarth Hatchback Final Verdict

The Fiat 500 seems to be playing the nostalgia card more than it relying on its specs. The $16k starting point is a plus for anyone who is looking to buy a functional car at that price point but moving up the ladder we get options that are way better than the Abarth variant too. The U connect is aging and the lack of premium appointments even on the highest trim is a little discouraging.
