After its success in markets like India, Australia, and Latin America, Ford decided to launch its compact SUV crossover EcoSport in the US market in 2018. As the name suggests, the car is an attempt to give economical and sporty ex[erience at the same time. Even though Ford gets a lot of things correct with the car, it is still shy when it comes to safety features. The base price of EcoSport is $19,995 which can go up to $27,610 for the higher trim.

There are two powertrain options available on the 2019 EcoSport, including the available all-wheel drive on all models. The 1.0L turbo engine is standard while you can get the more punchy 2.0L naturally aspirated engine as well. The competition is fierce, as the 2019 Ford EcoSport goes against opponents such as Honda HR-V, Chevrolet Trax, Mazda CX-3.

2019 Ford EcoSport Features

The Ford EcoSport is available in four trims, namely the S, SE, SES, and the Titanium trim. Ford provides two powertrain options and two drivetrain options available as well. The FWD comes standard on all trims. The SES is the only trim with AWD and 2.0L engine as standard. On all other trims, AWD is available as an option. The base S trims skimp on a lot of luxuries and cover your basic necessities like cloth upholstery, a 4.2-inch touchscreen, USB ports, and Bluetooth.

The SE trim adds a bit more functional features and additions to the car in the form of a bigger 6.5-inch touch screen, heated front row seats, a moonroof, and automatic climate control. Lastly, both the Titanium and SES trims share similar features such as blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, leather-trimmed seats, an 8-inch touch screen system, and a 10-speaker stereo system. Mykey feature for safe driving is standard on all trims.

Which Trim should you buy?

Our selection of the lot is the SE trim. It covers a lot more features and adds on heated front seats, a 6.5-inch touch screen system along with Ford’s SYNC-3 System, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a Power Moonroof, rear parking sensor, and automatic climate control. We recommend upgrading to the AWD variant for an extra $1500, which also upgrades the powertrain to a more powerful 2.0L engine. Finally, adding certain safety features such as blind-spot monitoring would be a good bargain.

2019 Ford EcoSport Engine and Performance

6.4/10

Ford offers two engine options with the 2019 EcoSport: a 1.0L turbocharged inline-3 engine that produces 123 hp and 125-lb feet of torque, and a 2.0L naturally aspirated inline-4 engine that produces 166 hp and 149-lb feet of torque. The 1.0L engine comes standard with FWD and if you opt for Ford’s intelligent 4WD system, the powertrain is swapped to the bigger engine. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard across trims and is decent but not particularly smooth.

Regardless, both engines are weak, and straight-line acceleration takes a while and doesn't seem particularly athletic. Its 2000-pound curb weight makes it neither nimble nor agile. It has a good towing capacity where the 4-cylinders can pull up to 1,400 lbs while 3-cylinder doing 1400 pounds without breaking any sweat. EcoSport can sprint from 0-60mph in 10.7 seconds.

The EcoSport is eaten up by the competition due to its underpowered powertrains; all of its competitors have higher power torque available at lower RPMs and rapid acceleration. Mazda, in particular, outperforms the competition thanks to its SKYACTIV tech engines and impressive driving dynamics. That said, Trax and HR-V take 1.1 and 1.4 seconds more to do the 0-60 mph as compared to the CX-3.

2019 Ford EcoSport Ride and handling

Make no mistake, the 2019 Ford EcoSport actually handles pretty well. It has a better suspension and a precise steering wheel that’ll help you maneuver through corners easily. The car has stable handling and a comfortable ride on calm roads, but the ride quality degrades dramatically when the pavement becomes rough.

The SES and the Titanium trims come with larger 17-inch wheels and along with the sport-tuned suspension, the ride feels much more isolated and comfortable. The ride is noisy. However, at lower speeds it drives well, driving through busy streets. But the overall ride is well-balanced and leaves little to complain about.

2019 Ford EcoSport Braking Performance

The 3000+ pound automobile comes to a stop at 125 feet from 60 MPH. On the other hand, Trax stops 4 feet before the EcoSport. The brake pedal does not have an impressive response but it is acceptable. You will experience a delay in braking and a high degree of body roll because of the high curb weight.

The Mazda CX-3 manages to top the braking charts thanks to its very low curb weight. The Trax is following the lead of CX-3 and stops from 60 to 0 mph 3 feet further as compared to the CX-3. That said, the HR-V and the EcoSport have approximately 100 lbs difference in weight. However, both SUVs have the same stopping distance of 125 feet.

2019 Ford EcoSport Fuel Economy

7.9/10

The 2019 EcoSport's economy is average, even with a low-powered engine. The vehicle returns 27 MPG in the city, 29 MPG on the highway, and 28 MPG combined. The fuel economy drops even further with AWD and the larger inline-4 engine, with EPA ratings of 23/29/25 MPG for city/highway/combined driving cycles respectively. A fuel tank of 13.8 gallons is given on the EcoSport.

The 2019 EcoSport plainly lags behind, with the Mazda taking first place in fuel economy. Honda HR-V comes a close second and offers remarkable overall fuel economy. The Trax, on the other hand, is midway between the Honda and the Ford in terms of fuel economy, but it has by far the largest fuel tank.

2019 Ford EcoSport Interior

7.2/10

The interior of the 2019 EcoSport has been created with adaptability in mind, with many nooks, storage bins, and hooks strewn over the cabin. Most of the plastic surfaces seemed harsh and hollow, including the leather-wrapped steering wheel. Exclusive leather and fabric seats, as well as copper-colored trim pieces, are included in the higher trims. On the base, trim seats are covered in cloth upholstery. Unfortunately, even on the top trim, the cabin quality is subpar. The little Ford's interior pales in comparison to the luxurious rivals. The 2019 EcoSport's dash is somewhat uneven but the numerous trim pieces, cut lines, and dash materials don't translate well here. It would all be ok if it had even a little hint of the Ford Fiesta's shoddy fit and finish, but it doesn't.

For a tiny SUV, the front seats are spacious and comfy. The back seats have enough headroom but limited legroom. While the driver sits in a high seat, the EcoSport's substantial window pillars limit the front view. There’s plenty of space in the cargo but if you need to store large objects, the second-row seats can fold into a 40/60 pattern. The standard features given on the base trims are a 4-way manual adjustment for the driver seat, manual tilt, and telescopic steering wheel, day and night rear-view mirror, cargo cover, driver side one-touch power window, Illuminated Entry System with the theater-dimming feature, two 12-volt power outlets, 8 cup holders, and Illuminated vanity mirrors. Heated seats and steering wheel are reserved for the higher trims.

The 2019 EcoSport compensated for the lack of headroom in the front row by providing ample legroom and comparable space in the second seat. However, in spite of having a shorter wheelbase than the CX-3, EcoSport has better interior space. The HR-V bags the title of being the roomiest SUV in the segment which also has the biggest cargo space of all. That said, EcoSport also has a good cargo capacity, placing second only to Honda's 24.3 cubic feet. The Mazda CX-3, on the other hand, has a small cargo area with only 12.4 cubic feet of space. Standout interior features are:

  • Manual tilt and telescopic steering wheel
  • Manual air conditioning
  • Cloth seats
  • Heated leather front seats (available)
  • Heated Front Seats
  • Remote start (optional)
  • 6-way power-adjustable driver’s seat (available)
  • Leather Wrapped heated Steering Wheel (available)
  • 60-40 Folding Split-Bench rear seats

Infotainment unit in the 2019 Ford EcoSPort

The SYNC3 infotainment system is better than the SYNC system offered on the base trim. The system is quite user-friendly and simple to operate. Navigating between menus is simple, albeit reaching for the control knobs can be difficult due to their location on the dash. The SYNC 3 Ford covers pretty much everything by including a bigger touchscreen display, Android Auto and Apple Carplay, SiriusXM, and hotspot.

On the base trim, you get a small standard SYNC 4.2-inch screen with Bluetooth connectivity. The base trim comes with a 6-speaker stereo system; upgrade to higher trims for a 7-speaker stereo system; and as an available, a 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen stereo system sounds great. Some of the standard infotainment features in the 2019 Ford EcoSPort are:

  • Android Auto and Apple Carplay (available)
  • SiriusXM Satellite Radio and Navigation (available)
  • 4-Speaker Audio System
  • SYNC3 8.0-inch touchscreen (available)
  • 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen premium audio system (available)
  • Voice recognition
  • FordPass Connect 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot

2019 Ford EcoSport Exterior

5.5/10

The 2019 Ford EcoSport has a bit of visual overhaul. The front black grille with Active Grille Shutters has been expanded and raised and the headlamp unit now has revised LED DRLs and projector beams. Ford's iconic big blue logo can be seen on the center now. The vehicle's aesthetic has evolved into a culmination of attempting to maintain the previous appearance while blending it with the new design to give it an affluent vibe.

The side profile provides a big bolder look and the roof rails can’t go unnoticed. There are some changes on the rear with no spare wheel mounted on the rear tailgate starting this year; this does take off its sporty SUV appeal. Other than that, the rear tail lamps look pretty much the same borrowing from its last year’s model. The outside power mirror has the integrated blind spot feature. EcoSport S runs on the 16-inch alloy wheels and 17-inch wheels are given on upper trims. The base trim also comes with an acoustic-laminated windscreen, Swing gate rear hatch, and front and rear tow hooks.

The segment has a very tight size but HR-V comes out as the longest SUV with the biggest ground clearance. CX-3 is the lightest SUV in the competition which will give a performance advantage and with the shortest wheelbase EcoSport will allow easier parking. That said, despite its distinctive look, the EcoSport manages to have a greater presence on the road than its opponent. Both the Honda and the Chevrolet may appear to be archaic in comparison to the EcoSport, but one could argue that the Mazda CX-3 is the most stylish of the bunch. Standout exterior features:

2019 Ford EcoSport Safety

8.0/10

The Ford EcoSport received an overall four-star rating from the NHTSA. The 2019 EcoSport has not been tested by the IIHS. Coming to the safety features, EcoSport holds no ground against the competitors. standard safety features on the car include ABS and traction control, 8 airbags, and an emergency brake assist system. On higher trims advanced features such as blind-spot monitoring and rear-cross traffic alert are available. Key standout Safety Features:

  • SecuriLock Passive Anti-Theft System
  • Blind-Spot Monitoring (available)
  • Rear-Cross Traffic Alert (available)
  • Brake Assist
  • Cruise control
  • Rearview camera
  • Mykey system

2019 Ford EcoSport Competition

6.0/10

2019 Ford EcoSport vs. 2019 Chevrolet Trax

The Chevrolet Trax becomes a superior choice to the customers, thanks to its better driving dynamics, performance, and combined fuel economy. The EcoSport might have a better infotainment system compared to the Trax, however, given the similarities between the car, the Trax has an edge, as it has been tested by the IIHS and received decent ratings.

2019 Ford EcoSport vs. 2019 Honda HR-V

The Honda HR-V is a better car if you want more interior room and to save money on gas. The 2019 HR-V has a class-leading fuel economy, making it a better choice for frequent travelers; but, the EcoSport is significantly superior in terms of accessible tech features. But when it comes to safety, HR-V has been awarded the ‘top safety pick’ title by the IIHS which along with more safety features, pulls odds in its favor.

2019 Ford EcoSport vs. 2019 Mazda CX-3

The Mazda CX-3 is thought to be the best in the segment, thanks to its smooth motor and great handling. It also gets better gas mileage and it is quick on the road. EcoSport tries its best to fight with a more spacious cabin, bigger cargo space, higher ground clearance but CX-3 tries to compensate for its crampy cabin disadvantage with impressive safety ratings and less braking distance.

2019 Ford EcoSport Final Verdict

The 2019 EcoSport's tiny dimensions make it simpler to live within cities, as does its excellent infotainment system and affordable pricing. However, if we consider safety features, performance, and fuel economy, rivals have the upper hand. If these are factors you can overlook, the Ford EcoSport appears to be a viable choice in a subcompact SUV but if you don’t have a brand preference then Honda HR-V or CX-3 will fit your needs better.
