The first-generation Ford Edge made its impact so good that it lasted for over 8 years, and the second-generation remained upbeat since 2015. And now the third generation Ford Edge is in development, and the revheads obviously can’t keep calm! The upcoming 2022 Ford Edge is coming out with some excellent alterations and upgrades. The 2022 Edge is the next-gen model, so you’ll be getting a lot more opulent features. Some significant changes that are worthy to be mentioned include complete interior redesign and exterior revamp.

The 2022 Ford Edge is getting redesigned for the new generation and gets a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The 2022 Ford Edge is expected to be priced between $33,000 and $44,000. If rumors are to be believed, you might see a three-row Ford Edge along with the two-row model. Plus, the Ford Edge will be available in 4 trim levels and the sportier Edge ST with a 335-hp turbocharged V6 engine. That said, the sturdy-looking SUV faces tough competition from its rivals likeJeep Grand Cherokee, theNissan Murano, and theMazda CX-9.

The all-new 2022 Ford Edge will start at a higher price of $33,000. The ST version of the same might start at as much as $45,000. Since these figures are speculations, you have to stick around to know more about the SUV and the correct prices.

The 2022 Ford Edge, just like the 2021 Ford Edge, will have various optional packages like Ford Co-Pilot 360 Assist package, Cold-Weather package, Convenience package, Cargo Accessory Package, Class II Trailer Tow Prep package, etc. Prices for any of these packages were not available as of writing this but will update this part as soon as Ford shares the price list with us.

We recommend

The Ford Edge is available in four trims, and one of them i.e. ST trim is performance-oriented trim. If you have the money, then go for the ST trim with eyes closed. Otherwise, we recommend going for the SEL trim, which for $3,000 premium over the base but adds features like 19-inch alloy wheels, premium audio setup, powered and heated front seats, etc. These features are a must and thus make the SEL trim perfect value proposition.

Release Date:

The 2022 Ford Edge will be available in your nearest Ford dealership by the first quarter of 2022.

2022 Ford Edge Engine and Performance

The next generation 2022 Ford Edge is rumored to come with a new powertrain option, which might include either a plug-in hybrid or a hybrid. The 2021 model offers two powertrains, one a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 that puts out 250 hp and 275 lb-ft of torque and the second is a 2.7-liter V6 that churns 335 hp which is available in the top ST trim. The Edge’s standard engine comes mated with an 8-speed automatic transmission system that sends out power to the front wheels. The base 2.0-liter engine is expected to continue while a 400-hp, 3.0-liter V6 engine could be plonked in the 2022 Ford Edge ST trim.

2022 Ford Edge SUV in action mode

The 2022 Ford Edge will be based on CD6 architecture that underpins the latest Ford Explorer. This means that the 2022 Edge will be RWD, thus we can safely presume that the new figures will vary from the 2021 0-60 mph time of 7.6 seconds and a quarter-mile time of 15.9 seconds. Still, the fastest SUV in the comparison is the Jeep Grand Cherokee with 0-60 mph in 6.7 seconds, followed by the Mazda CX-9 with 0-60 mph time of 7.1 seconds.

The Ford Edge will get a comfortable and softer suspension setup that will ensure better ride quality. But it is based on the CD6 architecture which has a lower center of gravity and is now much broader will result in easier handling and planted ride even at highway speeds. Thus you can expect to see a game-changing crossover in the form of Ford Edge that will have the best of both worlds. That said, the steering feedback and braking bite were not up to the mark in the 2021 Ford Edge, and we expect that the 2022 Ford Edge will have these two issues ironed out.

As for the competitors, the Jeep Grand Cherokee is the most powerful SUV with 293 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. Following closely in Nissan Murano with 260 horsepower and 240 lb-ft of torque. Next comes Ford Edge with 250 horses and 275 lb-ft of torque, which easily leaves behind the least powerful Mazda CX-9 that puts out only 227 horses but compensates that with a better 310 lb-ft of torque figure.

2022 Ford Edge Fuel Economy

8.0/10

The 2022 Ford Edge, as is known, will be featuring a new engine under the hood. And that simply means that the fuel economy will also be changed, but the base engine is expected to be carried over, so we can say the 2.0L EcoBoost motor in the 2022 Ford Edge will return a fuel economy figures of 22 mpg in the city, 29 mpg on the highway, and 25 mpg as combined. The 2022 Ford Edge is expected to have a fuel tank capacity of 18.5 gallons that can help it to easily return more than 460 miles of combined range.

Without a doubt, the Ford Edge with a 24 mpg of combined fuel economy leads here, followed by Nissan Murano with 23 mpg of combined fuel economy, and the most powerful among all, i.e., Jeep Grand Cherokee is the least efficient with 21 mpg of combined fuel economy. That said, the Jeep Grand Cherokee has the biggest 24.6-gallons fuel tank that returns a combined range of 516 miles which is the highest among all.

2022 Ford Edge Interior

8.0/10

The interiors of 2022 Ford Edge are expected to do away with budget-grade material, and we can see a refreshed look with necessary upgrades. The comfort and cabin appeal have also been improved by Ford this time, and as per the speculation this time, Ford has focused on the comfort and overall experience inside the cabin while updating it. Also, you can see a much better fabric upholstery for the base trim and better quality leather upholstery for higher trims. For the 2022 Ford Edge, the company has given away hard-touch plastic and will replace it with better materials.

2022 Ford Edge SUV front seats

The Edge will have a redesigned dashboard along with an optional third-row since the CD6 architecture that underpins the Ford Explorer is a three-row SUV. Stay glued for more updates from the manufacturer in the coming days. But for the time being, the base variant of the Ford Edge will be a two-row crossover and have a larger trunk space of 39.2 cubic feet. The rivals of the Edge also have great cargo space, but compared to the Edge, they don’t have a spacious cabin.

The shortcoming of the Ford Edge has been its base infotainment system’s small screen and an individual USB port. It’s nowhere close to satisfactory and up to the current market standards. But the 2022 Ford Edge’s infotainment system will see a complete refresh and an all-new SYNC 4A infotainment system that will sport a bigger touchscreen unit. Going by the renders and spy shots, the infotainment system will lose a lot of buttons, and you will get a clutter-free and clean touchscreen with few physical knobs for climate control. Highlights of the infotainment system include:

  • SYNC4A infotainment system
  • 12-inch touchscreen infotainment system
  • Voice-activated navigation system
  • SiriusXM Radio
  • Wireless Charging Pad
  • Bluetooth Connectivity
  • USB ports

2022 Ford Edge Exterior

7.0/10

The 2022 Ford Edge will get a revamp in terms of its exterior styling. The front fascia, and especially the headlights, will be redone to make it look more like the present trend. The design language might be similar to how it has been in the previous models, but the Edge will see some tweaks around its body. The front fascia of the SUV will come with newly-shaped headlights. The taillights will get similar treatment. You’ll see more chrome accents on the front grille.

2022 Ford Edge SUV

The Edge’s shape would remain the same, more or less. But of course, the dimensions are going to change, though not quite much. The new Ford Edge will also get a new set of 18-inch alloy wheels and a sloping roof design. There’ll be sharp bodyliners on the side profile, and you’ll get more exterior colors to choose from. The rear will see no major changes and will continue with the same LED brake lights seen on the 2021 Ford Edge.

The dimensions of the 2022 Ford Edge are expected to change, and the new SUV will be much broader than the outgoing model. That said, the Edge would be 188.8-inches long, more than 76-inches wide, and 68.3-inches tall. The use of a new architect will also mean the wheelbase might increase from the present 112.2-inches. The 2022 Ford Edge will be much bigger and spacious than the rivals. Speaking of which, Mazda CX-9 is the longest SUV with 199.4-inches in length, widest with 77.5-inches in width, and has the highest ground clearance of 8.8-inches. Highlights of the 2022 Ford Edge’s exterior include:

  • 18-inch alloy wheels
  • Speed-sensitive variable intermittent wipers
  • LED Brakelights
  • Front Fog lamps
  • Powered and heated side mirrors

2022 Ford Edge Safety

7.0/10

It would be too early to confirm anything about the 2022 Ford Edge’s safety ratings. However, Ford as a brand does provide its vehicles with advanced and effective safety measures. Plus, the 2021 year model of the Edge has performed well under the NHTSA and IIHS safety evaluation. While the NHTSA has rated the SUV with an overall score of perfect 5-stars, the IIHS has also awarded the 2021 Edge with the ‘Top Safety Pick’ title. A major reason why the 2021 Ford Edge has been rated top-notch under the crash safety ratings is that it has quite a lot of advanced active as well as passive safety features. Some of these include:

  • Blind Spot Monitoring
  • Ford Co-Pilot 360
  • Automated Emergency Braking
  • Lane Keeping Assist
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Post Collision Braking
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Evasive Steering Assist

2022 Ford Edge Competition

9.0/10

2022 Ford Edge vs 2021 Mazda CX-9

The Ford Edge has better power, but CX-9 has a torquey engine. The Ford Edge returns better fuel economy, while the CX-9 compensates that with a bigger fuel tank. The two-row Ford Edge has lots of interior space, but the Mazda CX-9 can seat up to seven. However, the new redesign for the Ford Edge could offer third-row passenger seating. Until the official launch of that, we can not say which one would be leading with a better interior. That said, the Ford Edge is a better proposition even in the two-row configuration than the CX-9.

2021 Mazda CX-9

2022 Ford Edge vs 2021 Nissan Murano

One of the most potential rivals of the 2022 Ford Edge is the Nissan Murano. It fights hard in terms of handling, fuel efficiency, and performance and beats Ford Edge with its power-packed 3.5L V6 engine and a better fuel tank capacity. But the Murano is the more expensive of the two, still, we feel the premium is justified here as the Murano is a much better overall product compared to the Ford Edge.

2021 Nissan Murano

2022 Ford Edge vs 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee

The Grand Cherokee is the most powerful SUV and competes hard with the Ford Edge. It has better interiors and is a lot more capable than the Ford Edge. It won’t be wrong to say that the Jeep Grand Cherokee is a proper SUV, while the Ford Edge is just a crossover. But what doesn’t go in Jeep’s favor is its poor reliability record and high upkeep cost, whereas the Ford Edge shines with excellent reliability and low upkeep cost. That said, if you are looking for a proper SUV, go for Jeep, else Ford Edge could be a better option overall.

2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee

2022 Ford Edge Final Verdict

The Ford Edge is one of the decent compact SUVs of its particular segment, but the redesign is surely worth the hype as you’ll get some noteworthy upgrades. There’s a modified rear bumper. Plus, the grille is also redesigned, and the wheels are different from the previous version. There are some new lighting features at the back of the SUV as well as within the cabin. The Sport version might have discontinued, but with the new Edge ST, things are surely looking optimistic. And with the interior redesign and use of more premium materials inside, the Ford Edge has for sure covered its major con. That said, even though we can't be sure about its quality in length but one thing is sure that the 2022 Ford Edge is going to create a lot of buzz when it will launch in the last quarter of 2021.
