2019 Ford Edge ST SUV Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

Being the first of its kind is always a daunting tag to have on oneself, as you have a lot of pressure on yourself because of the expectations that people have from you. The 2019 Ford Edge ST has a similar conundrum to go through, as this is the 1st Ford SUV that comes in with a "ST" badge.

Ford has done everything it possibly could, to make the Edge worthy of an "ST" tag. The 2019 Ford Edge "ST" comes powered by a 2.7L Ecoboost powered turbocharged V6 motor that belts out a massive 335hp and 380lbs.-ft. of Torque. The Suspension, although not adjustable, has been stiffened up when compared to the regular Ford Edge. The Drivetrain is an AWD unit that incorporates the AWD Disconnect feature as well. You get big 20" Wheels as standard while the Transmission duties are powered by an 8 speed unit that consists of an ST mode as well. Talking of features, all the premium features of the Titanium Trim of the Ford Edge have been carried over/ upgraded to the Edge ST.

We Recommend

The 2019 Ford Edge ST comes in only one trim and comes loaded with all the bells and whistles, that you would find in the standard Edge.

2019 Ford Edge ST SUV Engine

“The 2019 Ford Edge is pleasant to drive. Non-ST trims prioritize comfort over performance, and the ST ramps things up with its V6 engine. The Edge provides a composed, comfortable ride, and while there’s some body roll, the suspension absorbs most bumps and dips in the road.” – cars.usnews.com

Engine and Transmission

Underneath the Ford Performance badged engine cover hides a 2.7L V6 Turbocharged motor featuring Ford’s Ecoboost tech that pumps out a massive 335hp and 380ft-lbs. of torque. In terms of reference that’s more power than the base variant of the 2019 Ford Mustang.

The engine produces enough power to take the car get through city and highways. The Ecoboost engine is good, but at a certain time you’ll experience little lag while accelerating on highways but certainly not noticeable. The eight-speed transmission sends the engine power to all the wheels. AWD with AWD disconnect allows front wheels to prople vehicle hence reducing drag and overall energy demands.

The Ford Edge ST, lives up to its ST name with a 6.1 second timing for the 0-60 dash. The Ecoboost Motor works its magic in terms of the quarter mile performance as well as it takes just 14.7 seconds, to reach the quarter mile.

Speaking of the rivals, the Audi SQ5 is the fastest SUV of the entire lot, with its superb 5.1 second timing for the 60MPH dash. The other 2 SUV’s are nearly similar in the timings as are a second off from the Ford.

Towing Capacity

The Ford Edge is not like the big 3-row SUVs that are known for off-roading and great towing capacity. The Edge can tow up to 3500 pounds which again makes it a little hauler for your weekend travel.

Speaking of the competition, the Infiniti can tow the most weight, while the Audi comes ina close second. The Jeep and the Ford are equally matched in their towing capacities.

Braking and Handling

Ford has stiffened the suspension setup for the ST, while maintaining the same unit for the front suspension unit. The Rear Suspension however, gets an Independent multi-link suspension with trailing blade control arms that has been tuned to tackle corners more efficiently and reduce the body roll. The electric steering of the 2019 Edge is well-placed and offers good response while making turns. The car gets through the pavements with good road feedback from the front tires. The handling is completely remarkable for an SUV of this size. The brakes feel a bit touch at times, but provide strong power as we also get the emergency braking system installed throughout the trim levels. The braking distance is decent at 108 feet, which is one of the best performances from an SUV of this size.

2019 Ford Edge ST SUV Fuel Economy

The Ecoboost range of motors are famed for their performance and the fuel economy and the Engine in the Edge ST is no exception. Other than delivering impressive performance, the Ford Edge ST manages to dish out impressive MPG figures as well. The overall MPG figure for the 2019 Ford Edge ST comes out to be 21MPG, which is a segment standard. Others offer lower performance for similar mileage but the 18.5 gallon fuel tank somewhat robs the Edge of its range.

As we said, rivals of the Ford Edge ST offer similar MPG figures but if we were to tell you an exception, it had to be the Infiniti QX60. The Infiniti delivers the highest MPG figure of the lot and has the second best overall range, after the Jeep grand Cherokee.

2019 Ford Edge ST SUV Interior

“The Edge doesn't flaunt the latest interior design trends, and its tech interface is far from perfect. But its generous cabin and cargo space should count for a lot among crossover shoppers.” - Edmunds

Interior Seating and Comfort

This year, the Edge gets the same generous cabin space like always. The cabin looks clean from all corners and a handful of new features have been added for sure. A new rotary gear selector helps saving space across the center console and to make more storage areas. The 8-inch touch screen that cam optional till last year is now available as standard across all trim levels. Undoubtedly, the Edge has evolved with time. Whats special about the ST is the fact that it comes with factory fitted Recaro Bucket Sports seats with alcantara leather that adds to the sportiness and luxury quotient of the Edge ST.

“Its ersatz-X5 look intact, the 2019 Ford Edge wears the usual crossover-SUV uniform.” - carconnection

Dimension and Design

The Edge has restored its wide stance but has taken care of its size. It really lives up to its name. The new Edge gets a fresh front fascia uplift and houses new standard LED headlights. The Led taillamps are bigger and even the rear liftgate gets revised.

The ST also houses gloss black grille surrounded with matching fog lamps. The carmaker has tried their level best to provide a BMW touch to the Edge exterior styling through the front and rear-end treatment. The Edge ST looks glamorous with the red-and-black badge.

2019 Ford Edge ST SUV Competition

Ford Edge vs. Jeep Grand Cherokee

The Jeep Grand Cherokee manages to match the Ford in a lot of ways. The Grand Cherokee comes with the same MPG figures as the Ford, has similar dimensions as compared to the Ford as well. While the Jeep delivers decent performance, it simply can’t match the Ford in terms of the same. Practicality as well, the Ford manages to edge out the Jeep in terms of the Cargo capacity as well. With a price difference of $2,000 between the Ford and the Jeep, it’s sure that if a sporty SUV is what you want, the Ford will be your best bet between the two.

Ford Edge Vs Audi SQ5

The Audi SQ5 is probably the only performance SUV in our comparison that can truly match the ford in terms of the same. The Audi is faster than the Ford, delivers more power and has a superb Quattro AWD system. The Ford can’t also match the quality of the interiors of the Audi and the materials used. But once you bring in the price factor, things start to shift in the Ford’s favor. The Audi SQ5 is nearly $12,000 expensive than the Ford and for that, it’s difficult to suggest the Audi against the Ford.

2019 Ford Edge ST SUV Final Verdict

Being the 1st “ST” branded SUV in the Ford stable, the 2019 Ford Edge ST offers a lot of things that are characteristic of other “ST” branded cars in the Ford stable. You get stiffened suspension, high profile wheels, stiffened chassis and a powerful engine. But with the Legacy of Cars like the Fiesta ST and the Focus ST, the Ford Edge ST does seem to be a little short of doing justice to the ST brand. Sure the Edge ST offers a lot of racy and performance oriented stuf in it but we would still be waiting for the next iteration of the Edge ST, in hope of an even better Sports SUV. But for now, if you are in the modd to not burn a big hole on your pocket and get a performance SUV with practical demeanors, the Edge ST will definitely suit the role well.
