We Recommend

Although the car that we have with us for today is the SE trim level, we would rather suggest you go for the Titanium trim level of the Ford Edge. For a few bucks extra, you get loads of premium features and equipment. For a more sporty driving experience go for the all-wheel-drive variant of the Titanium trim level.

Engine

8.0/10

"The Edge has a trio of personalities, each of which matches its sleek, spare body well. Powertrains make all the difference here, but with each, the Edge handles about as well as a road-friendly crossover can".- The Car Connection

Engine and Transmission

The Ford Edge comes with a 2 liter, 4 cylinder engine. The power plant churns out 245 horses and delivers 275 lb-ft of torque. The engine is coupled to a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission and you get an option of sending power either only to the front wheels or to all the four wheels. The, on the other hand, gets a 2.7-liter V6 engine that pumps out about 315 horses.

The power figures of the Ford Edge are not that really great and in fact, the Ford Edge is the least powerful car in the category. The Jeep Grand Cherokee, the Dodge Durango and the Chevrolet Traverse all use the same 3.6-liter V6 engine but the former two cars make 293 horses while the Chevy Traverse, on the other hand, makes 281 horses only.

Torque 275 lb-ft 260 lb-ft 266 lb-ft 260 lb-ft

Acceleration

In spite of having the least powerful engine and having the lowest power figures, the Ford Edge performs really well against its rivals in terms of acceleration timings. The Edge can go flat out from a standstill to 60 MPH in about 7.3 seconds. The Ford will also cover the quarter-mile distance in about 15.7 seconds.

Engine 2.0L 3.6L 3.6L 3.6L
Emission (Tons/yr of CO2 Emissions @ 15K mi/year) 7.4 8.4 8.4 8.4

The only car that betters the Edge in terms of 0-60 MPH acceleration timings is the Chevy Traverse. The Chevy does a 0-60 MPH in about 6.9 seconds. The only other that beats the Ford in terms of quarter-mile acceleration timings is the Dodge Durango that hits the quarter-mile mark in about 14.9 seconds.

Ride and Handling

The Edge is quite athletic for its size and does handle really well. In spite of the noticeable body roll that' s there on offer but the characteristics of the car are such that it always wants to dive into corners and wants to take on challenging corners. Handling is neither sports car-esque nor it is like a conventional SUV. It somewhat sits in between both of them. Steering is pretty responsive and does offer a decent amount of feedback.

Ride quality is plush. The Edge is in fact built to offer the passengers a plush and comfortable ride. The suspension set up is thoughtfully set up and it tries to absorb every bump and pothole. During high-speed cornering, there is a chance of you getting thrown around. Otherwise ride quality is pretty decent.

Braking

The Ford Edge comes with rather a large set of brakes. Up front, you get 13.6 inches diameter discs and at the rear, you get 12.4 inches diameter discs. The Ford Edge can come to a halt at a distance of 125 feet from 60 MPH at a distance of 125 feet.

Curb weight(lbs) 3927 4545 4713 4913
60-0 MPH (ft.) 125 116 126 115

The braking stats of the Ford are somewhat disappointing given the fact that this car has the largest set of brakes and the lowest curb weight in the competition. The Dodge Durango has the best braking stats in the category and comes to a halt from 60 MPH at a distance of 115 feet.

Fuel Economy

6.9/10

Using a smaller engine and producing the lowest power figures helps the Edge to achieve the best fuel economy figures in the competition. The Ford can go for 21 miles in the city on a single gallon of fuel while on the highway, this mid-sized SUV can go for 29 miles on a gallon of fuel. The Ford Edge gets a combined fuel economy rating of 24 MPG.

MPG (city) 21 19 15 19
MPG (highway) 29 26 18 26
MPG (combined) 24 21 22 21

The Jeep and the Dodge both use the same engine and thus get the same combined fuel economy rating of 21 MPG. On the flip side, the Chevy Traverse gets a combined fuel economy rating of 22 MPG.

Interior

7.8/10

"The 2017 Ford Edge's cabin is mostly covered in soft-touch materials. In fact, the dash, doors and center console are all soft to the touch from hip level and up".-Edmunds

Hop on to the inside and you' ll rather find yourself in a pretty spacious cabin. The dashboard is neatly laid out and the cabin feels quite premium. You' ll find some good quality materials and the levels of fit and finish are also great. Moreover, it actually does feel that you are inside in an entry-level luxury crossover even if you aren' t.

Seating and Comfort

Deletion of the third seat helps the Ford Edge to offer the 5 passengers with more leg, head and shoulder room. Up front, the Ford offers a total head/shoulder/leg room of 40.2/60.3/42.6 inches respectively while at the rear it offers a total head/shoulder/leg room of 40.3/60.5/40.6 inches respectively. The seats are nice and comfy and overall it just feels nice to be on the inside.

Competition

Ford Edge vs Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is the American rival of the Ford Edge. Jeep uses a larger 3.6-litre engine and thus makes more power than Ford. On the flip side, Ford has better acceleration and fuel economy figures. Moreover, the Jeep is $2000 costlier than the Ford.

Clearly, the Ford is the better car here that offers a balance of power and fuel economy.

Ford Edge vs Chevrolet Traverse LS

The Chevy Traverse is yet another American rival of Ford Edge. Traverse also uses a larger 3.6-litre V6 engine and also makes more power than Ford Edge. It also has got the better acceleration timings than Ford Edge. Chevy can also accommodate 8 people and offers more passenger volume.

For $6000 extra, you get a better package in the form of the Chevy Traverse. And so if you ever find yourself in a situation where you have to choose between the two, we would rather suggest you go for the Chevrolet Traverse.

Ford Edge vs Dodge Durango

Dodge Durango is only Jeep Grand Cherokee that can accommodate 6 people. In a nutshell, if you want to fit in an extra passenger into your car, you should buy the Dodge Durango. Otherwise, Ford Edge is any day a better option.

Final Verdict

A great urban companion and a good balance of power and fuel economy. That' s what the Ford Edge is. Packed with features and loaded with equipment, the Ford Edge happens to be a pretty attractive package. The Ford also offers a great driving experience, good comfort levels, and practicality. All-in-all a great value for your money and easily one of the best city commuters currently in the market.
