The first generation of Ford Escape was introduced way back in 2000 for the 2001 year model. It is a compact crossover that became an instant hit just after its release due to its agility and durability. Escape was jointly developed with Mazda’s Tribute and both the models were released simultaneously in the automobile market. It comes with an exceptional price tag and offers maximum comfort and space. Escape ranked 6th among 17 other cars in the list of Best compact SUVs.

Apart from the standard features you also get few package options to add more features. We expect Class II Trailer Tow Package for SEL and Titanium trims, Cold Weather Package and SE Sport Appearance Package for SE trim, SEL Stealth AWD Package and Technology Package for SEL trim, and Titanium Elite Package and Titanium Premium Package for Titanium trim to be available in the 2022 Escape.

We Recommend

We recommend going for the SE trim and adding either the Cold Weather Package or the Convenience Package as per your requirement to your Escape SE. The reason for recommending this trim is simple as you get all necessary features like push-button start, SYNC3 infotainment, and can be had with Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist system.

Price

The prices for the 2022 Ford Escape are expected to be in the range of $26,000-$38,000.

Release Date

Ford has not provided any information on the launch date for the 2022 Ford Escape. But, judging by its launch cycle we expect the 2022 Escape to arrive at the dealerships this fall 2021.

2022 Ford Escape Engine and Performance

The Ford Escape was fully updated in the 2020 model year with a hybrid and PHEV variant added to the lineup, so no under the hood we expect no big changes for the 2022 model. Thus the Escape will be powered by the same 1.5-L Turbo Inline-3 and a 2.0-L Turbo Inline-4 engine. The former churns out 181 hp and 190 lb-ft of torque while the latter puts out 250 horses and 280 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission and can be had in either FWD as standard or optional AWD. AWD will be offered as standard on the Titanium trim.

2022 Ford Escape SUV Engine Bay

Since the powertrain is the same as last year we expect the 2022 Escape to do 0-60 MPH in just 8.9 seconds and quarter-mile coming in 16.6 seconds. While the turbo inline-4 would be able to do 0-60 mph in 7.7 seconds. As for the rivals, the Mazda CX-5 with 0-60 mph time of 8.3 seconds is the fastest. Next comes Toyota RAV4 with 0-60 mph time of 9.1 seconds followed by Honda CR-V doing 0-60 mph in a lazy 9.3 seconds.

The Ford Escape not only looks European but also rides like one. The 2022 Ford Escape is expected to carry over the same characteristics of supple ride quality with pliant handling. It is just behind the Mazda CX-5 in terms of handling and Honda CR-V in terms of ride quality, both are the benchmark for the segment in terms of ride and handling respectively. The brakes of the Ford Escape were already good and the previous Escape managed to stop from 60-0 mph in just 128 feet so we see no reason for any change in the brakes of the 2022 Escape.

The rivals here have two different powertrains under their hood. The Escape and CR-V have a 1.5-liter engine with the former having turbo inline-3 and the latter being turbo inline-4. The RAV4 and CX-5 on the other hand have 2.5-liter inline-4 engines. That said, the RAV4 has the highest 203 hp[ and 184 lb-ft of power figures. Followed by Honda CR-V putting out 190 hp and 179 lb-ft and CX-5 putting out 187 hp and 186 lb-ft.

2022 Ford Escape Fuel Economy

7.0/10

With the same powertrain being carried over the fuel-economy figures are expected to more or less be in the same ballpark as the 2021 Escape’s figures. Thus we expect the 2022 Escape to return 28 mpg in the city, 34 mpg on the highway, and 30 mpg combined of fuel Combined that to a 14.8-gallon fuel tank and you could get around 444 miles of combined range from a tankful of gas.

The Ford Escape and the Honda CR-V have almost similar 28/34/30 mpg of fuel economy figures in city/highway/combined respectively. Toyota RAV4 comes next with 26/35/30 mpg of fuel economy in city/highway/combined respectively. While the Mazda CX-5 is the least efficient with 25/31/28 mpg of fuel economy figures.

2022 Ford Escape Interior

8.0/10

The 2021 Ford Escape had a budget quality interior but it was spacious and comfortable. We are expecting the same interior build quality to be carried forward for the 2022 model year as well. We will mostly get a dark-themed interior. Fabric upholstered seats will be standard in the base trim level while the top trim will come with either faux leather or full-leather upholstery. The overall dash design and control layout will be ergonomically done with a good view up front thanks to the good amount of adjustability possible for the seats.

2022 Ford Escape SUV Dashboard

The available leather-wrapped steering wheel will feature some simple controls for the infotainment system. Also, an optional sun/moon roof will be available. On the flip side, you will still find low-quality plastic panels on the doors and center console. Opting for the Cold Weather Package will add heated front row seats, side-view mirrors, and a steering wheel. Other than that a power liftgate, multi-zone climate control, keyless entry, rear center armrest, the remote engine start will be available in the Convenience Package.

Whether you talk about the headroom, shoulder room, or the legroom in the front seats or the rear seats the Ford Escape will be the most spacious among all. Honda CR-V is almost similar in terms of interior space but loses first place due to lesser legroom in the front seats compared to the Escape. Next comes Mazda CX-5 followed by Toyota RAV4 with the most cramped rear seats among all. As for the cargo space the Honda CR-V gets 39.2 cubic feet of highest cargo capacity. Next comes the Toyota RAV4 with 37.6 cubic feet of cargo capacity followed by the Ford Escape with 33.5 cubic feet of cargo space.

The Mazda CX-5 has the smallest boot space of 30.9 cubic feet. The base trim of the Ford Escape will continue to get a 4.2-inch radio screen with a six-speaker audio setup but the higher trims will feature a floating 8.0-inch touchscreen with the latest SYNC3 interface.

2022 Ford Escape SUV Infotainment

While the Titanium trim will get a much larger 12.3-inch touchscreen with a 10-speaker B&O sound system, and dashboard navigation. Other standard features include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, USB charging ports, etc. Highlights of the infotainment system include:

  • SYNC3
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • SiriusXM with a 3-month trial subscription
  • Smart USB charging port

2022 Ford Escape Exterior

7.0/10

The 2022 Ford Escape will see some minor changes in the exterior. You will see some new curves here and there. We are not sure if Ford would add more exterior color options. As compared to the 2020 version it is now 2.4-inches longer and 1.7-inch wider than before. It will boast the same sportier and fancy look with no boxy characteristics.

2022 Ford Escape SUV Left Side View

The front grille, LED Headlights, body aerodynamics will see some minor changes to make it look more sharp and bold. The rear end has been kept simple, with oval taillights, curvy edges, and dual exhaust outlets.

No doubt, the Escape is the heaviest of all. Moreover, it could have been better if the ground clearance was made higher. RAV4 has a good ground clearance of 8.4-inches which proves who is better at off-road capabilities. Mazda CX-5 stays quite low on the ground as compared to other rivals in the segment. But the Mazda and the Ford have the longest wheelbase of more than 106 inches which translates into better interior space. Some of the exterior features of the 2022 Ford Escape are given below:

  • Estimated various exterior color options
  • Exterior technological add-ons
  • Sensor enabled automatic boot opening
  • New shaped headlights and grille

2022 Ford Escape Safety

8.0/10

The Ford Escape has always been built upon a very strong and rigid chassis. The 2021 Escape has earned a five out of five-star rating from NHTSA. The SUV also received a ‘Good’ rating in almost every parameter tested by IIHS. Interestingly, the SUV was also awarded the ‘Top Safety Pick’ by IIHS. Thus this will be a fair assumption to say the 2022 Escape will follow the same path. The following are the unique safety features that will be present in the 2022 Ford Escape:

  • Electronic Stability Control
  • Dual Stage Driver and Passenger seat-mounted airbags
  • Lane Keeping Assist and Lane Departure Warning
  • Post and Pre-Collision Safety System
  • Auto High-Beam Headlights
  • Personal Safety System Airbag Occupancy Sensor
  • Rear Child Safety Locks
  • Tire-Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)
  • Back-up camera

2022 Ford Escape Competition

9.0/10

2022 Ford Escape vs. 2022 Honda CR-V

The Honda CR-V is a direct and strong competitor of the Ford Escape. This Honda would be the first choice of many because it offers more cargo room, decent acceleration, premium-quality interior, and impressive riding quality.

2022 Honda CR-V

Despite being heavier and bulkier, the Honda CR-V manages to offer a sharp turning radius making it easy to make turns and park in tight spaces. Thus we don’t see any merit in recommending Ford Escape over the Honda CR-V.

2022 Ford Escape vs. 2021 Toyota RAV4

The Toyota RAV4 holds its value and advantage of offering good quality interior and layout but the Escape is a little more comfortable and spacious. Escape offers a good ride and handling quality compared to the RAV4.

2021 Toyota RAV4

But the performance offered by the RAV4’s engine is much better than that of the Ford Escape. Thus Toyota RAV is a much superior product in almost all comparison except for the interior space where the Ford Escape happens to be the most spacious in the segment.

2022 Ford Escape vs. 2021 Mazda CX-5

The Mazda CX-5 gets a bigger and slightly more powerful naturally aspirated engine while the Ford Escape gets it done with a smaller turbocharged engine.

2021 Mazda CX-5

The CX-5 gets a six-speed automatic transmission while the Escape gets an eight-speed automatic transmission so the highway rides on the Escape are much more smooth and results in a better fuel economy. Speaking of which, Escape returns a far better fuel economy in all conditions compared to the CX-5. But the CX-5 does shine when it comes to riding and handling which the Escape can’t even come close to. That said if you enjoy driving go for the CX-5 else the Escape is an overall better package.

2022 Ford Escape Final Verdict

The Ford Escape changed the evolution of the ‘compact SUV’ segment. It comes with a ton of interior, exterior, technological, and safety features. With a starting price of $26,000 you almost get everything in the base trim itself except for the luxury features which can be added through the available package at a premium.

Rivals are also good but they have their own pros and cons like Mazda has the best handling but lacks in other sections, Toyota RAV4 is overall a good product but lacks interior space, and so on. Thus it won’t be wrong to say that the Ford Escape is a jack of all trades but master of none. If that description suits you then the Escape should be on your top list.
