The Ford Expedition has made the already capable SUV from Ford even more capable. It has an all-new twin-turbocharged V6 motor which produces superior power figures and is much more refined as well. The Ford Expedition offers a great package for its price and has always been a reliable option in the segment.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

Despite being the bulkiest structure in the class, it delivers better fuel economy than others and has better acceleration as well. The 2015 Ford Expedition is offered in a total of four trim options and two drivetrain options, which start from $45,700 and go up to $60,500. The 2015 Expedition competes against the likes of the Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon, and the Nissan Armada.

Features
8.0/10

The 2015 Ford Expedition is offered in four trim levels, namely XLT, Limited, King Ranch, and Platinum. All the trims are available in either rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive options and share the new 3.5L twin-turbocharged motor. The XLT being the entry-level trim starts at $45,780 and is equipped with features like cruise control, keyless entry, electrochromic rear-view mirror, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and much more. However, as you climb to higher trim levels, the features like leather seat upholstery, remote engine start, heated front seats, premium audio system, and blind-spot monitor are added.

We Recommend

Well, the Expedition is best known for its impressive capabilities like towing, off-roading, ruggedness, and superior power figures from its V6 motor, and these highlighted points are offered in all the trim levels. However, if you want to add some comfort and luxury to your ride, the King Ranch will better give a value-for-money package. Along with the tremendous capabilities you are getting, luxurious amenities like leather seats with heating function, premium audio system, remote engine start, and many more, which we think is fair.

Engine and Performance
7.9/10

The 2015 Ford Expedition is now powered by a 3.5L twin-turbocharged V6 motor which is capable enough to power this bulky giant. The motor produces 365 horsepower and 420 lb-ft. of torque, and mated with a standard 6-speed automatic gearbox. The SUV is offered in both rear-wheel drives as well as all-wheel drive options, which differ in price by almost $3000 in every trim level. This turbocharged motor is quite enthusiastic which can accelerate this massive structure from 0-60 mph in just 6.3 seconds, which is faster than many of its rivals and can complete a quarter-mile distance in less than 15 seconds.

The power figures of all the SUVs are quite impressive, but the Expedition benefited with turbochargers and churn out class-leading power figures. Not only does it have higher power figures, but it is also the fastest in the competition to accelerate from 0-60 mph or to complete a quarter-mile distance. The GMC Yukon is quite sluggish to accelerate. The top speed of Chevy Tahoe is limited to only 100 mph H while that of Nissan Armada can reach up to 120 mph.

Fuel Economy
5.0/10

The 2015 Ford Expedition might not impress you with its fuel economy, moreover, this range of SUVs is so inefficient. The Expedition’s 3.5L motor delivers an economy of 15 mpg in the city and almost 20 on highways, and with the fuel tank capacity of 28 gallons, you can expect a driving range of over 400 miles in the city and over 550 miles on the highways.

The Expedition has decent fuel economy while that of Tahoe and GMC Yukon leads the class with combined mpg figures of 18. The tanks of Expedition and the Armada are voluminous which helps them quite well to enhance their driving range. However, the Expedition has a superior driving range while that of Armada doesn’t last long with a full tank.

Interior
7.3/10

The cabin of the 2015 Ford Expedition has an ample amount of room inside, which provides three-row seating and can accommodate 8 passengers comfortably. The cabin aesthetics perfectly reflects the ruggedness of the SUV with a selection of high-quality materials and excellent fit and finish. The dashboard and the center console make the driving position very commanding, where they are finished in soft-touch materials from the top. The strips of brushed silver on the dashboard and some wooden treatment at the center give a premium look and feel. However, the center area is cluttered with lots of buttons and knobs which look somewhat outdated, but they are good in terms of practicality.

Coming to its seating capacity and comfort, you can comfortably fit 8 adults here with an ample amount of room for everyone. The seats are wrapped in brown leather upholstery except for the XLT trim, which gets fabric upholstery. The King Ranch and the Platinum trims get power adjustments along with heating function at the front, while the other two trims feature manual adjustments only. It provides pretty good trunk space even with all the rows up, however, by folding the third-row seats, the volume increases to 55 cu-ft. which is more than enough to carry luggage for 5.

All are massive SUVs in the competition that provides seating space for 8 passengers. The expedition has all three rows of almost equal space distribution, which doesn’t make you feel cramped even in the third row. The Armada also has quite a good cabin space along with the voluminous boot, while the Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon have pretty little space. Some of the standout interior features are as follows:

  • Leather seat upholstery
  • Heated front seats
  • Dual-zone automatic
  • Auto-dimming IRVM
  • Power adjustable pedals
  • Cruise control

How intuitive is the infotainment unit of the 2015 Ford Expedition?

The base XLT trim level of the 2015 Ford Expedition features a 4.2-inch panel that supports SiriusXM satellite radio, voice activation, rearview camera, and navigation. However, the higher trim levels feature an 8-inch touchscreen panel which is really intuitive and has cleaner graphics that make your experience much better.

It has all the basic amenities required and some additional features like a 12-speakers Sony premium sound system, USB, voice command. The sound system of the Expedition is the major highlight of its infotainment which is provided by Sony that gives a truly immersive sound experience. Some of the highlights of the infotainment system are as follows:

  • SiriusXM radio
  • Real-time traffic display
  • 12-speakers Sony sound system
  • Voice activation
  • Satellite radio
Exterior
7.0/10

The exterior design of the 2015 Ford Expedition looks very boxy and rugged with minimal design elements and bold looks. The SUV is designed more for practicality rather than attractive aesthetics from the outside. The front fascia of this SUV looks very bold and muscular. The headlamps feature a projector and halogen combination setup which perfectly aligns with the massive chrome grille. The lower part of the bumper also gets some silver treatments with the LED fog lamps.

From the side profile, it looks bulky and tall. With the massive wheel arches and the dark tinted glass, it looks like a perfect rugged off-roader SUV. The window liners and the mirror are treated with chrome which highlights its looks. It gets 20-inches aluminum-alloy wheels with a kind of low-profile tires, while the XLT trim gets 18-inch alloys. From the rear, it has a simplistic design with all dark tinted glass which absolutely enhances its looks and maintains a cooler cabin as well. The rear also gets Expedition badging on a thick chrome strip.

The Armada also offers the longest wheelbase in the competition followed by the Ford Expedition, which also happens to be the second-longest SUV after the Nissan Armada. The ground clearance of all the SUVs is much appreciable, where you don’t need to worry about any kind of terrain. Some of the standout exterior features are as follows:

  • 20-inch alloy wheels
  • Power adjustable and heated side-view mirrors
  • Deep tinted glass
  • Power running boards
  • Automatic projector headlamps
  • Functional roof rails
Safety
9.1/10

The 2015 Expedition is based on Ford’s T1 platform which is also being shared with Ford F-150, Lincoln Mark LT, and the Lincoln Navigator. The platform provides 10 percent more torsional rigidity and incorporates a four-wheel independent long-travel suspension system. The Expedition is well tested by the NHTSA for its crashworthiness and results in a 5-star rating which demonstrates its robustness and capabilities. It is equipped with a wide range of active and passive safety features, among which some of the features worth mentioning are as follows:

  • Brake assist
  • Blind-spot monitoring system
  • Tire pressure monitoring system
  • Advanced roll stability control
Final Verdict

The Ford Expedition is a highly durable and capable vehicle from Ford, which is superior to the competition in terms of practicality, performance, and comfort. The SUV can accommodate 8 adults comfortably, and you get various luxurious amenities here. Its 3.5L twin-turbocharged motor has impressive performance and it is refined as well. Despite being the bulkiest in the class, it completes a quarter-mile distance faster than others. If you really want a highly capable SUV along with better economy and comfort, the 2015 Ford Expedition will better meet your demand.
